Papa Possum

A Visit

Anthony dreamed of his father. The two of them were sitting together in the car with a bag of take-out between them. It was strangely quiet without the rest of the family around. Dad reached into the bag and helped himself to a fry.

"Mom's not going to be happy if she finds out we're eating in the car," Anthony said.

"I think she'll understand just this once," Dad answered with a little smile.

He didn't look the way Anthony last remembered him: face pale and waxy, hands folded, looking strange in a suit Dad rarely wore. He wasn't as he looked in his last few moments of life, either: struggling for breath, crawling on the ground just before the ceiling came crashing down on him. No, this was Dad as Anthony saw him for years. Color in his cheeks, body unbroken, wearing a casual outfit.

"I finished that book you got me," Anthony mentioned.

"Yeah?" Dad popped a fry in his mouth. "What'd you think of it?"

"Interesting. I didn't know there were so many different ways a person would execute witches."

"Just don't go repeating that in front of Megan," Dad warned. "We don't want her getting nightmares."

"Don't worry, Dad. I always watch out for Megan."

"You have to watch out for yourself too, you know," Dad counseled him gently. "You're going to grow gray hair early with all that stress. Or you might start losing some of it, like me." Dad put on a self-deprecating smile as he ran fingers through his receding hairline. Anthony smiled with him.

"You look great, Dad." And he meant it. Dad looked as good as Anthony had seen him in a long time. Anthony's smile faded a little as he felt his body started to wake up. He wasn't ready yet; he wanted more time.

Dad took another fry and smiled at him. "This car's going to smell great later, that's for sure."

"Yeah." Anthony breathed it in. "I'm really glad we did this."

"Me, too," Dad agreed. And the dream faded away.

The Clarke Family Adopting a Pet

It was Megan's idea, let's get that straight right off the bat

Like any kid, she'd go to her friends' houses and see their adorable pets and want one of her own

Much to her dismay, however, her parents always said no

To her favor, though, her persistent asking and negotiating wore down her siblings

Mostly Anthony and Tanya

Dennis took a bit of convincing - not really, he just wanted to appear unbothered - but they got to him in time

Just in time for Megan's birthday when the three of them went behind their parents' backs and came back to the house with a puppy in their arms

Megan's joyful squeals and cheers could be heard for miles

It's safe to say Anne and James weren't happy

The matriarch of the family was a lot quicker to warm up to the adorable creature

She even helped brainstorm some names for the cutie

The Clarke family rarely finds common ground and the name picking process was no different

Until they did eventually agree on the name Leo

James was a lot less accepting toward the new member of the family

He even gave his older children the silent treatment for a good week

He tried to keep up the ruse longer but it wasn't effective

Especially not after they found him sitting on the living room floor, playing with the puppy with upmost joy lighting up his face

In the end, Dennis, Tanya and Anthony took silent credit for bringing this new light into their home

Megan got the pet she'd been begging for for years

And James and Anne found great enjoyment in spending hours with the pup, ultimately bringing them closer

Seems like getting a pet really does solve plenty of problems

We're gonna ignore the carpet they had to throw away because of Leo's 'accident'

And all the chewed up shoes

It's all a small price to pay for all the smiles and laughter he's brought into the Clarke home

Anne and James and sibling OCs in 1948

1948 being the year Anne and James married. Penelope is Anne's sister, and everybody else is James's family.

Cropped sections are further down. There's some connections from @108garys 's Super Massive Family Tree that play into everything (here's their portrait of older Penelope), and I'll leave it to them if they want to refresh everybody on the details. (Edit: 108garys gave lore in the notes). Some of the OCs have more lore than others, but I'm not getting into it here or doing deep dives about personalities and all that, so I just stuck together very non-deep little likes/dislikes/favorite activities lists for everyone. But first some notes on the art:

I went for a balance between dressy and casual, so most of these wouldn't be everyday outfits but none of them are formal either.

Nobody has naturally curly hair. Shirley has a perm, and Anne and Penelope use only curlers. (Unlike the other two, Penelope doesn't curl it every day).

If Anne's dress looks piecemeal that's because it is. Around 1948 was when women's fashion was transitioning from shorter wartime styles (minimum fabric) to longer hemlines, but ofc most women didn't just toss out all their old clothes, so the new things they bought were in the new style, while they also continued wearing what they had and sometimes altered their shorter things in various ways. The white border on Anne's dress is a recent addition, and so is the embroidered pocket because big pockets were also fashionable and it was intended to make the border look more like it belongs.

Shirley uses a brace, a built up shoe, and sometimes a cane due to effects from having polio when she was very young.

Bob has been in the U.S. Army for four or so years and he's currently a corporal. If part of his uniform is inaccurate then oh well because there were some details I just wasn't finding clear answers on (do point it out if you know something that's wrong tho). Also that's his hat he's holding in case it's hard to tell.

Ok now for the other stuff:

Anne, age 17 -

Likes: Dancing; recycling; Frank Sinatra music (don't spread it around); telephone party lines; the scratchy sound of crossing things off her to-do list.

Dislikes: Noisy children; poetry; men's cologne; bleached blonde hair; house pets; wrinkled clothes; rain on her hairdo; complainers; people with bad posture; anonymous love letters; being late; people who are late; unraked leaves; these peasants (most of the boys at school); being told she's too opinionated.

Favorite activities: Growing plants, mostly flowers; taking the mick out of James ❤

Penelope, age 8 -

Likes: Bicycling; puppies; reading, mostly fairytales; sticky sweets; movie stars.

Dislikes: Mud; talking to strangers; not having had her first kiss yet; never getting the lowdown after Anne's dates.

Favorite activity: Eavesdropping on the phone party line with Anne.

Shirley, age 24 -

Likes: Card games; chickens; picnics; reading; red on just about anything.

Dislikes: Snow; frogs; Bob; the sound of her own voice.

Favorite activity: Canoe rides to read on the open water. Her preferred victims to accompany her are James (she'll use her oldest-sibling authority for as long as she can) and whoever she happens to be dating (is that a weird date? idk but she calls it a no-go with a guy if he can't handle the quiet time).

Bob (Robert), age 22 -

Likes: Arm candy; being outside; cheating at card games; beer; animals, especially wildlife; pulling practical jokes on April 2.

Dislikes: Peas; serious conversations.

Favorite activities: Hunting; chasing women. (These things are not connected).

James, age 19 -

Likes: Holidays; history; picking dumb arguments; playing hockey when the pond freezes over; reading; PDA with Anne ❤

Dislikes: Waiting; hand-me-down clothes; being called Jimbo; having glasses.

Favorite activity: Finding money on the ground.

Clarence, age 11 -

Likes: Pocket knives; pirates; model train sets and dollhouses type stuff.

Dislikes: Surprises; hugs; getting up early; "old" people; getting his picture taken (that one's partly a joke, because I accidentally drew him looking a little moody for no reason).

Favorite activity: Fixing appliances and things around the house (under supervision because "fixing" is a bit of an overstatement. He can take things apart but has yet to learn how to properly put them back together).

Kathy (Katherine), age 7 -

Likes: Parties; collecting things; Brothers Grimm-style fairytales; terrible creature horror B movies.

Dislikes: Bugs, especially bees; nightmares from the terrible creature horror B movies.

Favorite activity: Poking dead animals. Trips to the butcher and dead mice found in the attic are her lifeline for now until she starts doing dissections in school. She definitely doesn't store said mice under her bed in jars she stole from the kitchen.

Cool so now that everyone is sufficiently grossed out I'll leave it here for now 😊 Stay tuned I guess because sooner or later I'm going to follow this up with the three youngest when they're older, around 1959 because that was a happening point in time for them. And lastly, 108garys is free to hate anything I wrote because we share the OCs but I consulted them on very little of this lol.

I'm trying to make a list of hobbies and info about The Clarkes (Plus Vince) and need a bit help.

If I missed anything let me know in the comments down below.

Here's what I got so far.

James:

Born on April 8, 1929.

Died on January 17, 1972.

Factory Worker at Ravenden Textiles Factory.

Worked with Vince.

Married Anne at 19.

He adopted all 4 of the kids.

He likes sports and darts.

May have had a bit of a drinking problem.

His middle name started with T.

42 when he died.

Has a temper.

Didn't approve of Tanya and Vince dating.

Worried about the factory closing alot and thought the kids would be fine, though he did tell Anthony to look out for Megan due to Anne's worrying.

Anne:

Born on February 12, 1931

Died on January 17, 1972.

Married James at 17.

40 when she died.

Was unable to have biological children.

Worried about the kids alot. Megan especially.

Didn't approve of Tanya and Vince dating.

Had a book on parenting.

Was frustrated with James.

Looked to the reverend for help after reaching her wit’s end with Megan. 

Tanya:

Born on August 22, 1949.

Died on January 17, 1972.

22  when she died.

Middle name started with A.

Hated Little Hope and wanted to get away.

Practiced Paganism. 

Dated Vince Barnes.

Yelled at Megan for playing with matches once.

Poured coffee on a handsy guy at work.

Was a waitress. 

Had coworkers named Murray and Jeannie.

Painted stars on a tire swing with her dad when she was ten. 

Liked Jewelry. 

Gets frustrated easily.

Owned a diary.

Was miserable at home.

Calls Megan M and a living hell.

Drunk whiskey before.

Likes bowling and burgers.

Might have shared a room with Megan.

Dennis:

Born on April 29th,1951.

Died on  January 17, 1972.

Was 20 when he died.

His middle name started with F. 

Didn’t trust Vince.

Was a band guitarist.

Had tons of records and was a big fan of music.

He might have been adopted first.

Also may have been a thief based on a one off joke but maybe not.

Calls Megan bigfoot.

His band had posters.

He participated in a concert. 

His band was a rock band.

Played rugby and maybe football.

He won several awards. 

Anthony:

Was born on either 1953 or 1954. Exact date is unknown.

18 at the time of the fire.

Became a bus driver after his family died.

Is depressed and suicidal. 

Tanya calls him ‘Mr. Knight in Shining Armor’.

Was annoyed with his parents’ fighting and his dad’s drinking as well as with how everyone treated Megan.

He resents Megan after their family’s deaths. 

Built a doll in jail to remember Megan by.

Got burnt in the fire.

Was the second youngest of the family.

May have a fear of being left behind and might feel left out by his family.

Is traumatized after the fire.

Was fond of the witch trials.

Has mental health issues.

Was blamed for the fire.

Was helpful to the family.

Got along great with Vince before the fire.

Shared a room with Dennis.

His middle name was not revealed.

Played darts and may have played baseball or basketball.



Megan:

Born on June 16th,1960.

Died on January 27th, 1972.

Was 11, almost 12, when she died.

Her middle name started with R.

She was a problem child.

She had a history of playing with matches.

Was called M and the little princess by Tanya,

She was resented by a lot of people in the family.

Was mentored by the reverend for months.

Was the youngest.

Had a doll.

Became rebellious and felt like her family didn’t care about her.

May have read Tanya’s diary.

Watches tv.

Is called Big foot by Dennis. 

Has mental health issues or may be able to talk to ghosts.

Was scared of the reverend.

Art was her best subject.

Had a C average and had an F in history, writing, science, and physical education.

Was resentful towards her parents.

Vince:

Factory Worker at Ravenden Textiles Factory.

Worked with James.

Has a temper.

Tanya’s boyfriend.

Has a nice car everyone is jealous of.

Likes whiskey, western movies, burgers, and bowling. 

Plays dumb but is actually really smart.

Practiced Paganism. 

Never got over Tanya and drank a lot after her death. 

Got in trouble at work because of it.

Visits little hope after it closed down in 1979.

Wasn’t that much older than Tanya based on his looks.

Became depressed after Tanya died.

Abandoned his car after carving a sun into it and rides a creaky bike.

Took care of Tanya’s grave.

Got along with Anthony before the fire.

He drinks the brand of beer ‘singing nickel’. 

Played pool/darts with Anthony before.

If you can think of any hobbies I missed let me know please. I'm trying to write some fics and want a better feel on the characters and would hate to miss something. Please and thank you. Even if it's just one off things the characters have said when Anthony was hallucinating them.
