I checked out my local record store a few days ago, they had some fun stuff. Even some prog, multiple Jethro Tull records and some Frank Zappa.
Then I managed to find something Yes-related, two Jon and Vangelis records. I went back today to pick up The Friends of Mr Cairo.
I also bought a Paul Simon record I really like, I'll share it in another post.
The disc ended up in a Dire Straits sleeve...
Here's what the actual sleeve should look like
I'm really happy I found it, such a great collaboration. Beautiful composition and a beautiful voice. Have you guys seen the clip of Jon talking about how he met Vangelis? I'll reblog it after this lol

The scene where Barbie looks at the old woman Jonny. They look at each other and smile. Barbie is surprised because she's not used to that. The old woman to her is so unbelievably real, you get what I mean? Barbie comes from a world where everything is perfect. Real life is not. Though it is hard (also because of record companies I'm telling you) it is still worth living. People show their emotions. They look happy and sad, angry and calm. Their life is hard but they still have reasons to smile. That scene was cathartic Jonny. You know what im saying? Veeery very touching

Jon & Vangelis - The Friends Of Mr. Cairo
One of those early 80s songs that is simultaneously awesome and dumb as hell.

Back
in the day a couple of true hotheads made a song called state of independence. And a while after that Donna Summer did a cover, that is Pretty Damn Good I think.
That was the new version. The original was by Jon and Vangelis
In my mind the Jon & Vangelis version is the better, because it is after all the original and weirder one. And damn it, when the line “his truth will devour the lies” (or whatever it is, it seems to differ in different recordings) comes on, you feel like punching the sky. But Donnas version is smoother, less weird and more attuned to normal people. And I think it is a serious step from her “disco diva” days.
