The use of English shorthand and typewriters expanded towards the end of the 19th century in clerical work in the major cities of the subcontinent. The use of shorthand in Indian languages, however, developed not in the context of office work but to meet the requirements of the new public sphere, particularly the quick notation of public speeches for reporting in newspapers. This led to the invention of new speed scripts, atitvarene lihiṇyāchī paddhatī (very speedy writing) or laghulekhan (shorthand) in Marathi, which relied heavily on Pitman and Munson’s English shorthand. Arguably the first use was in 1874 by RB Gunjikar [...]. Gajananbhau Vaijya, an English shorthand writer and reporter with the Indian Statesman, invented another speed script expressly for the quick notation of speeches [...]. Notably, Indian-language shorthand remained in the sphere of handwriting, as typewriters for non-Latin scripts did not become widespread in the subcontinent until the mid 20th century. [...]
[I]t is actually Bhujangrao Mankar, inventor of a third shorthand script with the book Laghulekhankalā (1897), who announced himself on the title page as the creator of Marathi and Gujarati shorthand. Mankar was a well-known English shorthand reporter for the press and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) in Bombay for all manner of political meetings in the early 20th century. [...]
---
As Bernard Bate noted, Tamil shorthand came into its own when the colonial government attempted to acquire written transcripts of possibly seditious speeches during the Swadeshi movement.
In Bombay, too, shorthand found widespread application in CID surveillance with the growth in nationalist meetings and activity in the 1920s. Sub-inspectors could learn Marathi shorthand as an optional subject in the Central Police Training School; the usual practice was to pass a test in the office and regularly test for speed.
In the trial of the Ali brothers in Karachi following the Khilafat movement, speeches by Mohamed Ali and Shaukat Ali were entered as evidence of their seditious activity.
Similarly, charges against Communist leaders SA Dange, RS Nimbkar, and others in the Meerut conspiracy case (1929–33) were also based on their public speeches.
The cross-examination of witnesses turned on the accuracy of the transcripts and the methods used to obtain them and provides a rich window into the work of memory, notation, and translation involved in producing a speedy verbatim transcript of a public speech, and the issues of legibility, authenticity, and transparency that linked scribe, script, and language to state surveillance.
---
Police reporters usually translated the shorthand transcripts of speeches in various languages into English longhand as soon as possible. In Karachi the Ali brothers’ Urdu speeches were recorded in Urdu shorthand. In Belgaum in June 1921, however, sub-inspectors of the Pune CID took down their Urdu and English speeches in Marathi shorthand. During a meeting in Bagalkot, also in northern Karnataka, Shaukat Ali’s speech in Urdu was orally translated sentence by sentence into Kannada as he spoke [...]. There was thus much processing of sound, meaning, and sign across languages, scripts, memories, and individuals, all at high speed. [...] The inspector [...] Deshpande mentioned a critical aspect of Pitman-based shorthand writing: since the signs matched specific sounds, he did not pay much attention to the content of the speech; he just noted down the sounds as best he could, even if he didn’t know the meanings of words. Gaps between sounds and meaning, it would appear, were filled in either during transcription through memory recall or by the CID itself. [...] These practices of notation, translation, and judicial discourse grappled with a spectrum of textual reproduction of oral utterances, from gist to verbatim.

Transgender Flag Day: 6 Inspiring Transgender Figures in India
Tumblr media
Ever since ancient times, the presence of transgenders has been recorded in India. The record of transgenders can even be seen in Puranas. They gained further recognition during the medieval era when they held positions such as political advisors, administrators, generals as well as guardians of the harems.
Tumblr media
The transgender flag, designed by Monica Helms in 1999, was donated by her to the Smithsonian National Museum of American History on 19th August 2014. The day has since been observed as ‘Transgender Flag Day’ all over the world, to celebrate the legacy of transgender people and raise awareness about their plight.
To celebrate transgender flag day, we would like to talk about six people from the transgender community who have made notable strides in their lives and served as an example to everyone in India.
Akkai Padmashali
Tumblr media
Akkai Padmashali’s life is one of turmoil and hardship. At the age of twelve, she tried to take her own life, but she eventually didn’t. Her parents used to berate her for dressing up as a girl, they tried to take her to the doctors to get her ‘fixed’. She later joined Sangama, an LGBT rights group based in Bengaluru, Karnataka. She later founded Ondede, a human rights organization to advocate the rights of children, women, and sexual minorities. She was invited to the International Bar Association in Tokyo in 2014 to speak about transgender issues. Akkai has also famously said, “Why should I die? Let me fight for my community members. I have a huge responsibility on my shoulders”.
Tumblr media
It was during the ninth grade when K. Prithika Yashini first recorded feelings of being trapped in the wrong body. Her conservative parents weren’t exactly vocal about trans rights, leading Prithika to run away from her hometown in Salem, Tamil Nadu to Chennai, where she found solace in the city’s transgender community.’ She later applied for Tamil Nadu’s sub-inspector of police. However, the Tamil Nadu Uniformed Services Recruitment Board (TNUSRB) rejected her application as she did not belong to any specified gender. Eventually, The High Court of Madras ruled in her favor and she cleared the test, becoming the first transgender police officer in India.
Tumblr media
Gauri Sawant became a mainstream icon in India when she was featured in the beautiful and heartwarming ad campaign of Vicks. The advertisement showed the relationship between her and her adopted daughter, Gayatri (the biological daughter of a sex worker who died of AIDS). In 2000, Gauri founded Sakhi Char Chowghi, which helps transgender people and people affected by AIDS. Her life was immortalized in JioCinema’s series called Taali, where her role was played by Sushmita Sen.
Tumblr media
Manabi Bandyopadhyay earned the title of ‘doctor’ when she completed her Ph.D. in 2006, becoming the first transgender person to complete a PhD in West Bengal. She later went on to become a professor of Bengali Literature at Vivekananda Centenary College and even penned a novel titled Endless Bondage. She made headlines in 2015 when she became the principal of Krishnagar Women’s College.
Tumblr media
Rose Venkatesan became aware of her identity crisis when she was five years old. Her family was unsupportive of her, and used violent methods to ‘set her straight’, she was later thrown out of her house. Undergoing gender reassignment surgery in 2010, Rose Venkatesan works in many fields like television and radio.
Tumblr media
Zoya always had a passion for photography. However, she was forced to drop out at an early age, making it difficult to pursue her goals. However, a chance stumbling at a used camera shop rekindled her fire for photography. She became a part of the industry after being a part of Hijada Shap Ki Vardan Part 2, at which’s success party she met the editor of a publication. Today, Zoya Lobo is India’s first transgender photojournalist.
Filaantro has worked to uplift the transgender community in the past. We have conducted a ration kit distribution, along with our partner, Child Help Foundation. The distribution drive also shed light on their plight.

Tickexams : Making job exam preparation affordable for tier 2 and 3 city aspirants in vernacular medium
Access to affordable resources for test preparations has become increasingly difficult in a country where entrance examinations are the stepping stones into reputable jobs and university seats. Several studies show that close to 65 percent of government job aspirants in India hail from Tier-2 and Tier-3 cities. But aspirants from small towns and rural areas struggle to find adequate & quality coaching and learning resources that cater to their needs. Despite the serviceable available market of USD 300 million, very limited quality intervention exists addressing the requirements of such aspirants. Tickexams, an educational startup launched in 2021, has stepped in to mitigate this very supply crisis and has created a name for itself in the growing test preparation industry.
An engineer by educational background, Syed Shaed Hashmi, was passionate about public policy and governance related matters and was a civil service aspirant who failed to clear the UPSC examination. Drawing from his own experience of preparing for government exams and more than 8 years of teaching, he founded Tickexams to make test preparation accessible and affordable for Tier-2 and Tier-3 aspirants. Apart from providing well-curated learning materials, the organisation also provides teachers who are well versed in English and vernacular languages. This is what sets Tickexams apart from the big players such as Byju’s, Testbook and Unacademy, where centralised teaching resources and staff provide services only in English. “Preparing for competitive exams can be stressful. For students coming from small towns, teaching instructions in English can be intimidating and may inhibit their learning progress. I wanted to make sure that the aspirants are learning and preparing in a language they are comfortable in while building their English language skills” says Shahed. Along with this it has developed a reinforced learning methodology for competitive exams preparation and the exam preparation mechanism is continuously improving with aid from AI & ML based backend tools.
Today, Tickexams has grown into a large network, with more than 5000 students under their subscription plan (B2C) and catering to 400 learners through coaching institutions/ other partner institutions (B2B2C) across states like Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Tamilnadu etc. Tickexams currently provides preparation support for 8 government examinations and some of successes involve 1 final selection & 4 interview calls in UPSC — CSE, 1 final selection in KPSC-KAS, 2 final selections in PSI (Police Sub Inspector), 5 final selections in KPSC-Group-C Exam. Recently 26 students successfully cleared NMMS exam from remote place Tiptur(Karnataka). They were trained by Tickexams in collaboration with local NGO RYT. “We are planning to expand our services to support more examinations and demography of aspirants” says Shahed who also travels widely to spread awareness about test preparation. So far, he has conducted more than 100 workshops in 30 districts across 6 states. It is the grit and determination of Shahed that has helped Tickexams carve a name out for itself in a short span of time.

Congress brought the country to a sorry state: CM Bommai
Tumblr media
Jul 08, 2022 09:55 IST Bengaluru (Karnataka) , July 8 (AF): Karnataka Chief Minister Basavaraj Bommai on Thursday said that the Congress leaders have "misused" Mahatma Gandhi's name and brought the country to a sorry state. Speaking to media persons Bommai said, "A DIG was found involved in a PSI recruitment scam during the Congress regime, but the Congress government failed to take action. They did not even bother to question him or suspend him. But we have taken legal action. We have arrested high-ranking officers. They should realise their mistakes. Congress is in the position of a convict. They bowed to lobbies and covered up the scams. They do not have the moral right to preach to others." "There are more such scams which Congress has buried. They would be exposed in the coming days," he added. Bommai further said that they did not suspend even a single person in the KPSC scam related to the recruitment of Public Prosecutors. The PSI scam case is related to the irregularities in the appointment of police sub-inspectors in the state. MLA and former Minister Priyank Kharge had earlier alleged a huge scam in the PSI recruitment of more than 545 candidates and pointed at the involvement of the government and officials in the matter. Notably, on May 12, Karnataka Minister for Higher Education CN Ashwath Narayan announced that the state government was investigating the PSI scam and had assured that the people involved with it would be exposed. On April 29, the Karnataka government decided to cancel the results of the police sub-inspector (PSI) recruitment exam following allegations of corruption. The government had stated that a fresh exam will be re-conducted and the dates for which will be announced soon. (AF) Read the full article
