“I've seen the light, it’s in my daughter's eyes.” (In My Daughter’s Eyes - Martina McBride)
After the experience with the former queen Callia, Heaven became fascinated with the terrible 1937/8 war and the 1999 terrorist attack on Hyocheon. Our parents thought of it as strange, it was an unusual interest for a little girl especially when the topic had so much horror and death. And especially when the latter involved our king grandfather’s murder. My sister Heaven was actually not fascinated by the horror and deaths but rather the resilience and positivity that came from it. She marvelled at the Aeworans of long ago refusing to give up, thinking of them as her heroes. Every evening my sister Heaven, our brothers, and our father sang pro-Aeworan songs, one being “Arirang”, a favourite song of resistance against the Japanese during the war. Koreans in “the origin land” also sang Arirang. One day she drew the skyline of Hyocheon with the iconic now-gone tower. “I drew the Taebaek Tower, too!” she beamed. “Ah yes, good drawing. That tower is gone now..” our father let out a sigh.
This fascination even led to the cousin trio (Heaven, Hope, and Milo) playing and acting as their favourite  war heroes and heroines. Heaven played as her favourite spy, Choi Eunmi. Hope played as her favourite female sniper, Kim Mi Sun. Milo played as his favourite General–General Jung Min-kyu. Sometimes they would play with the children of the Castle’s workers. If Heaven heard one of the children insulting the Japanese during their playtime, she would cross her arms and make a face until they apologized.
One day Heaven and our mother went on a tour. They both loved the rich, historic aura that surrounds the city. But there was something that captured little Heaven’s attention and kept her captivated. The 1937/8 war memorial. There are several reasons this particular memorial held her attention. When Heaven walked toward it, she saw these statuesque men lined up. She got an eerie, sinking feeling. But as Heaven got closer, she had a feeling of being watched over, sheltered, and protected. It was all very odd, she thought. Heaven walked slowly along the sidewalk, peering at the faces on each statue. The little Aeworan wondered whose brave son, brother, father, uncle, grandfather or husband she was gazing at. She watched our mother wipe tears away, “They all fought for you, my little princess.” Our mother whispered to her, she didn’t dare talk loudly. Heaven nodded but said nothing. She listened to the reverent silence that surrounded the site, as it was at all the other memorials.
Our dowager queen grandmother Juli had a doll sitting in the Castle for many years. It sits in her personal room. After being crowned Queen, she received loads and loads of all kinds of gifts from all over the kingdom. This included the doll. It is a China doll. Porcelain with red cheeks and brown hair. Heaven even talked about this incredible memory. She said she remembered admiring the doll on the gold-painted shelf. The eyes of the doll seemed to stare into her very soul and at the same time seemed so far away. The doll was perfect. Our grandmother walked in and noticed Heaven and the doll but didn’t say anything. One day, grandmother took the doll down and placed her into Heaven’s arms. “Upon closer inspection, I noticed many flaws and imperfections. Somehow this made the doll more of a treasure. Touchable. Reachable. Not quite so forbidden.” As my sister recalled, she sprinkled truth, “There is a bit of that China Doll in all of us. We strive for perfection but find we can not live up to such a mighty task.” and then acknowledged,  “I am not just Princess of Aewora. I am also the China Doll, seemingly perfect from afar. But you will find, upon closer inspection, all the flaws and imperfections that life can hand anyone–royal and non-royal. Though cracked, I am uniquely me. A treasure waiting to be discovered through the eyes of those who love me for who and what I am. I ask nothing more, nothing less.”
When Heaven was eight, she went on a trip with our cousin Hope, our uncle Matthew and his second wife to Washington, D.C. Our parents stayed behind in Aewora. School was done for the summer, and the twin princes thought it’d be nice for their little girls to go and see the wonders of the American capital before school resumed. The night before traveling, Hope and her father and her stepmother slept in our mansion. It was the four of them, the girls and their mothers, that took turns reading a story book before planning for rest. Their voices were soft and animated. After the reading was done, the girls insisted they weren’t sleepy yet. Heaven started the round of joking and giggling and Hope joined in. “Come on girls, it’s time for rest,” the mommas said. “A big day is coming.” The girls, however, began to pass notes and drawings to each other from their beds. On the notes were written, “you’re a good sister!”. They were cousins, not sisters, but they considered themselves to be. Hearts and smiley faces were drawn. Sparkly stickers in all shapes were also added. All in good fun. Caught up in the giddiness, Hope’s stepmother wrote a note and passed it on to momma. “You’re an awesome mother and friend!”. Momma felt the slumber party atmosphere, and responded back to the note with a hug and a moving “thank you!”
Heaven and Hope and the two adults flew out to Washington. They stayed at fancy hotels, ate at expensive restaurants, swam at the beaches, spent their afternoons at museums, and even did some shopping. Heaven bought toys for her brothers, a necklace for momma and a new silver watch for father. Uncle Matthew helped her pick out a watch. And more souvenirs to add to their collection.
The day before leaving Washington, the three of them went to a theatre to watch a play. And that is when eight-year-old Heaven first laid her eyes on her future husband–the lead actor. She was intrigued by his performance and talent. And she thought he was handsome. She instantly became one of his many admirers and was so glad to have come to that theatre. Heaven wanted so bad to talk to the handsome actor. And what the princess wants, her Royal Highness will get. Hope, on the other hand, was not so intrigued. Maybe Hope couldn’t wait to get back to their hotel’s pool, she seemed to be bored out of her mind. Hope was the kind of girl who preferred movies at the cinema and not some old dumb on-stage performance. “I wish that guy would look at me.” Heaven whispered to Hope, who was barely paying attention. “He makes me feel butterflies!” After the play, Heaven wandered off and found the actor in his dressing room backstage. Their conversation was pleasant. The actor introduced himself as John Wilkes Boyd. He was a brilliant, skilled, good-looking man who had many female admirers coming after him. He was also gentle, polite, and old-school. He preferred the stage than the screen.
