In the previous edition of Arte-Factual, I looked at Mexican sugar skulls, a folk art tradition that combines Christian religious practices with ancient Mesoamerican beliefs. This time around, I thought I’d turn my attention to the burial doll replica Lara Croft comes across in the remote town of Kuwaq Yaku in the jungles of Peru.

lara croft would never abandon her quest, never deviate. her obsession is palpable in everything she does. except if a child is in danger. and that is so obvious after etzli gets taken and lara proposes to set aside finding the box to rescue him first and unuratu sets her back on the path.
also lara’s interactions with little pablo in the first kuwaq yaku sidemission. the way she kneels down to his level, brushes the dirt and muds from his clothes and gently sets him on his feet to find his father?
finally, and most painfully, lara’s survival instinct taking second place as it is replace by the sheer terror and panic when she sees the little kid hanging above the lethal tsunami wave in cozumel? how she desperately tries to get to him? the anguish in her voice when he loses his grip and falls, the way she just stops, just freezes, until remembering she needs to get herself to safety?
it’s very easy to see that lara has very strong protective and maternal instincts when dealing with children.  enamored by their curiosity and wonder, she would lay down her life, her mission, her beliefs, to protect a kid.

I’m up to Kuwaq Yaku now, and I am really enjoying the game. I loved the flashback level at Croft Manor. Young Lara was adorable and it was really fun to play as her for a bit. Fighting the jaguars was great, and it’s been so fun getting through the jungle with Jonah. I am also enjoying the challenge tombs and crypts, those are always fun to solve.

Summary: Lara saves Reader from being attacked by a jaguar
Lara and Y/N had just been reunited after the plane crash and were making their way over to the city, Kuwaq Yaku.
“Y/N, help me with this,” Lara bent down to lift up the fallen pillar.
“On three, two, one,” Y/N helped her lift it up before quickly crawling underneath it, grabbing a hold of the pillar again as soon as she got to the other side. Before she could actually lift it up, a loud growl was heard from behind her and she was yanked backwards by a big claw.
She screamed in agony and pain as she immediately knew what it was. Jaguars.
“Y/N! Y/N!“
She tried to crawl back but the mud underneath her made it almost impossible. The girl felt the jaguar let go and she tried to get away as soon as possible but the jaguar had already grabbed her again. Immense pain shot through her tiny body but she still managed to elbow the beast in the face.
"Y/N! Come on,” She heard Lara mutter in frustration. “Hold on, I'm coming. Use the flare gun,” She screamed at the struggling girl on the other side of the pillar and threw it to the other side.
Y/N’s head shot up as she reached to grab the gun. The jaguar launched at her as soon as she turned around and she pulled the trigger. She shot right in its face but the jaguar snarled and jumped away- not very affected by it.
“Y/N, hold on!” The girl heard Lara’s distant yells.
Y/N got up as quick as her injured body let her and she looked around. Her eyes flickered with fear. Where did he go?
She could hear his breathing but where was it?
Her eyes looked up to see if there was anything she could climb on but her attention quickly darted to one of the bushes.
“Behind you!” Lara yelled out. She had just climbed over and was looking down.
Y/N turned around, letting out a painful scream before grabbing the dagger out of its sheath. She grabbed onto it for dear life, looking left-right-left, but nothing seemed to move now.
Her breathing was all over the place.
She saw something move in her peripheral but before she could act on it, two arrows whizzed past her, hitting the jaguar right in the head. It reared back, then took two steps forward before falling onto the ground and letting out one last sigh.
Y/N slumped down onto her knees and dropped her dagger into the mud. She was covered in mud from head to toe and her back was pretty messed up- but she was alive.
She felt two arms wrap around her shoulders. “Thank god, you made it,” Lara sighed out. Y/N let herself rest in the other girl’s embrace.
“Thank you,” Y/N whispered, a smile on her face.
Once again, Lara Croft had saved her life.
