Sea Lion Pup Vessel
Moche culture, Peru, 200–850 CE
Ceramic & slip, 19.7 x 15.5 x 16 cm (7 3/4 x 6 1/8 x 6 5/16 in.)
The Cleveland Museum of Art 2014.375
“Sea lions commonly appear in Moche art as effigy vessels, like this appealing pup, or in complex scenes that often show them as the targets of human hunters. They may have been prized in part for the beach pebbles found in their stomachs; modern Peruvian folk healers consider such pebbles to have powerful medicinal qualities. Also, colonial-period natives believed that sea lions carried the dead to off-shore islands, an idea that could date to Moche times.”

Where do you get all the inspiration for ur cultist art? It's so unique and human unlike basically all official 40k artwork which is obsessed with being as stereotypically evil as possible
thank you for noticing this! although i am not a native siberian, i am really invested in culture of the selkups, evenks, sakha and other people who inhabit these lands. i get inspired by traditional clothing, ornaments and myths told by the people. i don't stop here though, i research other cultures through the internet and get inspired from them as well. i am fascinated with cultures that resisted the rot of abrahamic religions, and i feel like the society that opposes the god-emperor should be shaped like that. it works especially well with nurgle, since his ways are most relatable for common folk. for the benevolent hand cult, i used buddhist decorations, some vaguely peruvian clothing and many things that i just saw somewhere and added unconsciously.

A anthropomorphic cat from ancient Peru. There is archeological evidence that ancient Peruvians independently domesticated cats and kept them as treasured companions. Cats featured prominently in ancient Peruvian art, such as this textile from the northern coast of Peru dated to 900 - 1100 CE.
There is not much cultural context for this fragment of a long vanished civilisation, but I hypothesise that it could be a cat shape shifting into a human or a human becoming cat like. In Indigenous American cultures, the theme of blurring the line between human and animal in spiritual life and ritual is a reoccurring theme. What happened to the ancient domestic cats of Peru? It's unknown whether modern day pet cats in Peru are their descendants or if the ancient moggies died out. Perhaps this art tells us that those clever cats learned to take on human forms and they still exist as werecats among the indigenous Peruvian population.... This is the exact premise of one of my folk horror fiction story ideas!

Fetiche Sonoro's Best Albums of 2023
Guys! these are the best collection of recordings issued as a single piece of 2023, and we are very excited that you can enjoy these delightful albums.
Madres by Sofia Kourtesis
At first glance, The Peruvian's first album appears to effortlessly combine European house music with Latin American influences, exuding a predominantly joyful atmosphere. However, beneath the surface, it reveals itself as a profound, emotionally intricate, and contemplative work that invites the listener to dance. While addressing weighty themes, the album remains fundamentally grateful, joy-infused, and celebratory in its essence.
Corsé by Clara Peya
The Catalan artist has assembled a talented group of thirteen diverse performers known for their exceptional interpretation skills, combining profound lyrics with dynamic shifts in emotion. Every track on the album exudes the same level of passion and elegance, each in its unique style. The impressive production –driven by a subtle form of electronica that doesn’t overpower the rest, and featuring a piano with graceful touches– is truly remarkable.
Habita by Pahua
The Mexican musician has continuously released songs since 2020 but this time she finally releases her debut album, which is jam-packed with international collaborators. While not overly ambitious the production aims to experiment with different genres gracefully encased in dazzling electronic folk.
Lucha by Y La Bamba
It's unusual for a project to realize its complete potential after so many years, but that appears to be precisely the case with Y La Bamba from Portland. Luz Elena Mendoza's music has taken on an unprecedentedly smooth, immersive, and surreal quality, as familiar sounds continuously transform into unfamiliar forms. The unique dimensions, layers, and shadows within this music are genuinely perceptible in this production.
Vidrio by Titanic
Exploring innovative pathways in contemporary composition, jazz, and art song, Guatemala-native cellist and vocalist Mabe Fratti collaborates with Mexico City multi-instrumentalist Hector Tosta. Their artistic direction defies genre constraints, with each composition centered around the distinct clarity of Fratti's prominent voice. The musical journey traverses a spectrum of styles, ranging from jazz and chamber pop to intricate guitar polyrhythms.

Hi! Younger artist here, I just saw your post with all those super cool monster designs and I took a quick stroll through your blog, and I was wondering if you had any specific inspirations for those designs or where you get inspo for character designs in general? Or perhaps some tidbits on how you learned how to make wild designs like that?
Sorry if this is a bit of a big ask, I just think it's really cool and I was curious!
Hello! Thank you for your question and apologies for taking so long to answer, I just got really excited and wanted to be thorough!
My biggest piece of advice is research and develop a visual library of reference material! Your visual library is like a mental database of everything you’ve ever seen in your life, and this is what you can pull from to design concepts.
There are a couple ways to start this as a practice:
Notice what you see! It can be a chair, a sunset, a shoe, the light on a tree, but if you see something you think is beautiful or interesting, mentally make a note of it!
Document what you like! With computers and cameras this is a lot easier to do nowadays, but if you see something interesting to you, document it. You can draw it, or take/save a photo to folder.
Organize it! I highly recommend coming up with a system for referencing back to find things, either through image tags or folders or even a manual filing system.
Pay attention to your personal preferences and experiences. Try to think about what draws you to certain visual elements, identifying them can lead you to more things you like. Also pay attention to what you don’t like and why, it doesn’t necessarily need to be bad or amoral, we all have personal tastes.
Get out of your comfort zone! I recommend trying to see something you’ve never seen before often. Find a new artist, a new genre, research a new type of design movement, go to a new place, etc.
Try to find context for your research! For example, If you really love a specific era of fashion, research that time period and the way historical context informs it. Context can be really important, especially if you are working with references new to you!
Important Note 01: You don’t want to copy or rip-off these things. In my experience the best way to avoid that is to have a lot of reference points for any project and embrace your authentic personal interests, experiences, and identity.
Important Note 02: Like any research, be conscious of primary person vs secondary sources! One is not better than another necessarily, but I find I work my best with a  mix of both. I like to start with primary sources and then move to secondary sources, Ie: looking at authentic suits of armor before moving to contemporary armor concept art. You don’t have to do this, it’s just something I find helpful.
Important Note 03: While mostly I’m referring to visual references, audio, music, and writing are also super helpful!
Ok now, how do you curate all that for a project. For those monster illustrations I wanted to explore how color can be horrific. Keywords: Color & Horror. So I start looking through references for things that have the effect I want color wise, vivid and maximalist, and things that I find scary or horrifying. Here are some of the things I knew about or discovered during the research process that had the vibe I wanted.
Notable Influences
Color and Design
Peruvian & Guatemalan Textiles and Traditional Clothing
Spanish Traditional/Folk Clothing
Sammezzano Castle, Italy
Nasir al-Mulk Mosque, Iran
Russian Traditional/Folk Costumes
Fonthill Castle, Pennsylvania
Zhangye National Geopark
Nick Cave - sculpture artist
Lousie Zhang
Magnhild Kennedy - “Damselfrau”
Horror
Catacomb Saints
Capuchin Catacombs of Palermo
Japanese Yokai
Greek & Roman Mythology
Mandrills & Monkeys
Charles Fréger’s Photographs of  European Pagan Costuming
Avant Garde Fashion
Alexander McQueen
Vedas by  Nicolas Alan Cope and Dustin Edward Arnold
Stephen Jones - Hats
Mummies
Reliquaries
Marina González Eme
Lorenzo Nanni
H.R Giger
Intersections of Color & Horror
Microscopic Imagery
Moths, Beetles & Shrimp
Suspiria (1977)
AJ Fosik
Hungry | Johannes J. Jaruraak
Once you’ve gathered these references in one place (like a moodboard, folder,  or Pinterest board) It’s time to pay attention to wear aesthetics intersect, what patterns are coming up, what proportions of color, what textures reoccur, what elements of clothing reoccur, etc.. What relationship do different images have with each other, what emotional effect do they create.
Now that you’ve studied up, it’s time to sketch, try and create things that feel similar to the work you are looking at but not copy it, instead try mixing things together. Experiment! Let your personal style and preferences sink in! Interpret what you’ve learned!
From there, it’s more of a design process, how to use proportion, light, anatomy, perspective, form, repetition, etc, to create the desired effect. Then you refine and refine.
For new or different projects you repeat the process, maybe you use similar points of reference, maybe you go a completely different direction.
Anyway that was long, but I hope it was helpful!

Peru Part 1: Lima to Cusco
Tumblr media
NYC to Lima, Peru
I convinced my parents to take a day trip to NYC, maybe see a broadway show, wander around, oh and drive me to JFK so I didn’t have to deal with the train to subway to subway to AirTrain or the overpriced Uber/Lyft/Cab. That afternoon I saw my first real Broadway show (Aladdin), and that evening I was at JFK waiting to board my first solo international flight for my first ever trip away from North America.
My flight was delayed. By six hours. Only after we boarded on time, I got through most of Top Gun: Maverick, we deplaned, sat, and wandered around a basically empty airport before boarding again around 5:30 am. I then watched the last twenty minutes of the movie and promptly fell asleep.
Getting to and from airports is always more stressful than it needs to be. No matter if you’re getting picked up by a friend, dropped off by an Uber, renting a car, or taking public transit. It’s never easy. I opted to coordinate an airport pickup with the hostel I was staying at my first night to avoid attempting to figure out a taxi or bus in a foreign country, with a different native language, after an overnight flight. He had a sign with my name on it and everything, just like the movies.
After checking-in I do what I always do on my first day in a new city - I walk. I wandered about 15 minutes to historic Lima, grabbed a quick bite of food on the way, and ended up heading towards theConvent of San Franciscoand the catacombs underneath. Tours for non-Peruvians cost s/15 (about $3.75 USD) and are offered in English and Spanish. No photography is allowed inside, but I don’t think you need photos to understand that piles of bones buried underground are a bit creepy. In addition to the Catacombs, the architecture and the art of the monastery itself is impressive.
Peru Hop to Cusco
‍Peru Hop is a hop-on, hop-off bus tour that travels from Lima to Cusco, continues into Bolivia, and is filled with plenty of stops in between. The company has recommended itineraries but you can create your own flexible trip however you want.  I needed to be in Cusco by a certain date for my pre-trek meeting for the Inca Trail, so I opted to stick to their recommendations. Logistically, it’s probably one of the best ways to get to Cusco while still seeing a decent amount of the country on the way. Bilingual, very knowledgeable guides (shoutout to Christian and Mari), lots of included activities, and the ability to meet travelers from all over. Our stops included:
Paracas
Included:Paracas National Reserve Tour. Took the bus through the preserve with narration by a guide and plenty of stops at overlooks, viewpoints, and photo ops.   We had enough time to go wander and grab coffee before the tour. Since we were switching buses we were able to store all of our stuff at the hotel that served as the meeting point.
Tumblr media
Huacachina
Extra: 2-hour sandboarding and dune buggy tour in thedesert oasis
Cost: $20 USD
Our driver took us over the steepest dunes and that itself was worth the cost. Sandboarding is a blast. It’s been almost a month and I think there is still sand in my Sunglasses.
Our HopGuide told us if we made it back in one piece his buddy who owned a bar would give us all free drinks. And he did. We headed to the hostel bar to keep the fun going until the wee hours. I’m not usually a huge partier but apparently, I am when I’m abroad. Stayed the night in town. PeruHop can help book accommodations and offers discounts.
Ica
Included: Tasting atNetto Pisco Vineyard. Pisco is the national drink of Peru. Nothing says fun like shoving a bunch of hungover people on a bus to go taste more booze.
Nazca
Included:Nazca linesviewing tour. You can see a few of the famous Nazca lines from the tower. PeruHop can coordinate a Nazca Lines flight, starting around $80 USD, you just might miss out on the pisco tasting depending on your schedule.
After Nazca, it’s the overnight bus to Cusco - a late stop to pick up and drop off some folks, and an early morning stop for the same. The buses are pretty darn comfy, the seats recline nicely, and they provide cozy blankets. Grabbing a travel pillow (or at least a balled-up sweatshirt) is recommended. The bus arrives in Cusco around 6:30 pm, and the guides have already coordinated taxis/vans (cost included) to take us to our hotels/hostels/airbnbs.
While meals weren’t included, the Guides often passed around menus for lunch/dinner allowing us to select our order so they could call ahead to the restaurant. Not only was this useful for the language barrier (much easier to ask the Guides a food question than the restaurant staff who may or may not speak English, especially if you have any dietary restrictions), it helped save time. Most places accepted credit or debit cards, especially Visa, but ATMs are pretty easy to find. A full meal - meat, carbs, and veggies could cost around $10 at a nice restaurant, and our buffet lunch on the way to Cusco was $9.
And I was just getting started. Cusco, the Inca Trail, and the journey home are still to come.
