December 21, 2022 - Blue-throated Mountain-gem (Lampornis clemenciae)
These large hummingbirds are found in much of Mexico and parts of the southwestern United States, often near streams in canyon and mountain forests. They feed on nectar and small invertebrates, capturing prey in the air and picking it from trees and spiderwebs. Females build cup-shaped nests from spider webs and egg sacs, insect cocoons, plant fibers, feathers, hair, mosses, bark, and other plant materials, on tree branches, rock ledges, and houses, bridges, and other structures. They incubate clutches of one or two eggs and care for the chicks alone.
