My hyper fixation on Mermaid Melody flamed up again this week and I discovered there's apparently a new manga

If it was the pearl thing then how old is Rukia actually? Because at least according to the wiki Siera seemed to be born around 10 years old??

Day 1- Appearance

Once again, this is Moxan (she/her)

Her clothes are made of a spare Organization XIII coat that she cut because it felt too restricting to her.

Her skin has been actually heavily darkened by uh *checks notes* actual darkness as a way to heal her after she got terribly sunburned by being forgotten in the Keyblade Graveyard for a bout a month.

Her hair stripes also come from the darkness she gets exposed to while traveling through Corridors Of Darkness, and they have gotten a little bit thicker over time.

Her golden eyes are, somewhat predictably, a result of holding a small piece of Xehanorts heart in her own.

Amusingly enough, Moxan suffers from body dysmorphia and basically refuses to look at herself in mirrors and such, as a result she practically is not aware of the changes that happened to her body since leaving her home-world and also because no one else her told her either.

I had fun making this, I feel like I'm a rare case that doesn't have a keykid as an oc and also Moxans story has a very intentionally limited scope, so I'm definitely going to struggle with some of these promps lol

Things I’ve not 100% decided what to do about in my rewrite. Spoilers for both the actual Mermaid Melody series and vague ones for my rewrite below. 

1. Sara and Gaito

In the manga/anime, they die. I don’t want to do that, especially since I plan on expanding Sara and Gaito’s stories, especially Gaito. I plan on stripping Sara of the “Mermaid Princess” title so Seira can exist, but idk exactly how. I feel like she and Baya should have a reconciliation moment. Maybe they and Gaito can help rebuild the Orange Kingdom?

2. Sheshe and Mimi

In the manga/anime, they have an ambiguous sister/lover relationship and they die. I’m making sure that they are clearly not sisters in the rewrite. I don’t want them to die because they canonically fit into the “Bury Your Gays” troupe so so bad. I haven’t really figured out what to do exactly because I’m writing them as very self-serving, so I don’t feel like the traditional redemption arc fits quite right at the moment.

I also kinda like the Lucia x Mimi ship, but plan on ending with Sheshe x Mimi and Lucia x Kaito. Idk if I’m going to do anything with any Lucia x Mimi.

3. Michal Amagi and Kaito’s Forgotten Memories

I do not care for the memory wipe for drama, so that is out. I’m not a huge fan of Michal’s possessiveness of Kaito. The easiest thing to do would be just not to write her in. However, Michal and Rihito’s existence pose interesting questions about the world the story takes place in and Panthalassa’s place in it, so I need to figure out what to do with them because it interests me enough to make me want the Amagis in. 

4. Post Pure

In the manga, Lucia becomes the next Aqua Regina. In the anime, this is a plot point that is ignored. The way that I am writing Aqua Regina, idk if there can be a next Aqua Regina. 

In light of MM Aqua’s Ch 1 and 2, I am sorely tempted to rewrite that too...help

if you want: 90′s magical girl anime / fighting by singing / lots of filler about love problems and love drama / really great plot focused episodes (although few)

I usually write seperate reviews of each season but seeing how the 1st season ended with a preview for the next season’s 1st episode, I thought they’d be connected enough to write everything in this review. That said, I don’t quite remember what was considered a spoiler in the 1st season so my bad in advance.

There was another reason I decided to postpone my review of the first season of Mermaid Melody. I simply didn’t have much to say. The set-up is obviously inspired by “The Little Mermaid” where tiny mermaid Lucia, our main character, saves a little boy from a ship and hands him her pearl. Fastforward to the future and human Lucia goes on land to look for her pearl as it contains a special power. Weirdly, finding it doesn’t take long as the boy Lucia saved back then lives there and has kept the pearl all this time. But instead of our Prince Charming, Kaito is a cocky, oblivious and a bit rude but that obviously doesn’t stop Lucia from still being in love with him.

The actual story of Mermaid Melody centers around a calamity in the Seas. The seven Kingdoms have been attacked and some of the Mermaid Princesses have been kidnapped. Lucia meets Hanon and Lina and the 3 of them use their Mermaid Princess powers to sing songs so bad it makes the enemy teleport to an other dimension. Okay, I kid, obviously they have Special Memaid Powers to their singing which the enemies can’t stand. 

The enemies at first are 4 water demons (looking like pretty girls obviously) who are chasing after the mermaids for their leader called Gaito. They are a bit annoying I might say but in the middle of season 1, a more powerful duo takes over the “seriously trying to capture the mermaids” role and the 4 of them are relegated to a more comical characters where they become much more likable. The season goes as you’d expect from a Magical Girl anime from the 90′s. Love, drama, comedy with LOTS of filler. Filler is obviously not a problem for me as it’s a core part of longrunning MG series’ but every filler episode felt the same here. Love this, love that yadiyadiyada, the constant whining and misunderstandings really pissed me off after a while. There are only a few episodes that really focus on the plot and those are great! The ending was especially surprising with the whole tone of the show for the most part.

Now, season 2... is probably one of the most depressing MG anime I’ve ever seen. Obviously, I can’t talk much about it because of spoilers but hooooly molly. As I think is obvious, I am not the biggest fan of love drama and whatever but the way this worked out... the first 10 episodes literally made my heart hurt. What a painful premise. Almost everything is improved upon in S02, from the VA’s (some of whom were obviously beginners in S01) to the songs and the content of the fillers. The reason my rating is lower is simply because the plot around the enemy was so convoluted and nonsensical that compared to S01, that I felt nothing when the story came to a close.

Mermaid Melody isn’t the best magical girl anime I’ve ever seen but it does have its moments and those are absolutely amazing and something you can rarely find in other anime of the genre.
