A historic production of Shakespeare’s popular comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, will be presented at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, directed by Tara Notcutt and featuring an all-female cast and creative team. Award-winning director Notcutt is making history with something never before seen on a South African stage: an all-female version of a Shakespeare play. She leads some of South Africa’s most celebrated actresses in a version of The Taming of the Shrew like it has never been seen before: a meeting of classic text with modern twists, including lip-synching, 90s fashion, and an all-female cast playing men and playing women, supported by an all-female creative team. This production also makes history as Notcutt becomes the 5th women in 61 years to direct a Shakespearian production at Maynardville. We were invited to attend the cast’s first day of rehearsals and get a sneak peak at this groundbreaking production.

Slick’s Nit-Picks: Chronicle
Hi, may I have two tickets for Akira? …..Oops, I meant Chronicle, of course. If you thought the Americanized version of Akira had been shelved for the time being then you would be correct, but Chronicle still fits that bill. Before I continue, I have to assume that the reader has either seen or at least heard of the 1988 anime production, Akira. If you have not, please click this link before…

ONLY you: Alice B Toklas (Lynita Crofford) and Gertrude Stein (Shirley Johnston). Photograph by Philip Kuhn.
OCCASIONALLY, IN THIS country and this industry, one is privy to a work that absolutely shines with all the values that good theatre promises to deliver. Amid all the political correctness, the paralysing self-censorship and other contemporary humourless ghoulies that beset our already…

Holiday in the Wild (2019)
The most original thing about this Netflix Original is the elephants, which in my personal opinion, is a great addition to any movie regardless. Our story opens on Kate Conrad (Kristin Davis), her son Luke (John Owen Lowe), and husband Drew (Colin Moss). Luke heads off to college, Kate complains to the “Ladies who Lunch” Trish (Thandi Puren) and Mrs. Burns (Lynita Crofford) about how she doesn't know what to do with herself, so Kate plans a second honeymoon to Zambia. Much to her surprise, Drew tells her he wants a divorce. So Kate decides to go to Zambia by herself. Shortly after, she meets Derek (Rob Lowe), and they immediately get off on the wrong foot. As Derek is flying Kate to her resort, they stop to help an injured elephant. Kate, a former veterinarian, decides to go with the elephant instead of going to the resort. At the elephant sanctuary, she meets Jonathon (Fezile Mpela) who runs the facility. She builds a relationship with everyone there, human and elephant. Once she and Derek start “warming up” to each other, in comes Leslie (Hayley Owen), the representative of the foundation who funds the sanctuary and who bones Derek. I’m not gonna give away any more spoilers, but Leslie is our primary antagonist.
The music and setting was unique and very cool because it was Zambia, but other than that it was a pretty standard sappy Christmas movie.
Overall, I give it 3 stars.

Dear Reader,
And just like that we’ve reached another milestone! On September 1st 2018, Sarafina Magazine officially turned two. Year Two saw us continuing the same work as before. We continued to post weekly interviews and introduced Sarafina Magazine: Live! A bi-monthly panel discussion. Our second one, The Doyennes, was recorded in collaboration with Theatre Talk and Bounceboard Productions. It can be viewed here. The purpose of the live discussions was to encourage engagement between our readers and some of the wonderful women we’ve previously featured on our site as they examine complex and compelling career related issues. The funds raised from these discussions went towards ensuring the longevity and expansion of this platform.
Two years later and we are still going strong. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the women who have agreed to be featured on this platform, and the women who are still to come. Thank you for the battles you fight, the trails you blaze, the ceilings you shatter and the work that you make. I hope you know that you are seen, you are heard, you are appreciated, you are celebrated, you are championed and above all, you are valid.
These last two years have been the privilege of a lifetime and this is just the beginning. I can’t wait to share with you what else is in store for Sarafina Magazine as we continue on this journey together.
As is tradition, I asked some of our photographers to share some of their favourite images from the past year.
Best,
Candice Bernstein, Sarafina Magazine Founder
Jesse Kramer
This was something quite different for Sarafina Magazine, the first read-through of a script, rather than an interview.
Photographing a table read is challenging as everyone is sitting still with their heads down, but also a very exciting part of the process of making theatre; it is the first day that the cast meets up; the first time that everyone gets to hear an inkling of what this production might sound like and it happened to be the anniversary of the director’s 50th production. It was also momentous as the first all-female Shakespeare to be performed in South Africa.
I chose these three photos as I think they capture the excitement and nervous energy of a first day and I just love any opportunity to get into a rehearsal room to watch & listen to the process of making new work.

Antoinette Kellermann and Dorothy Gould – How lucky can you be to get to photograph these two actresses and spend an hour in their company! Such funny, charming women, totally without ego and totally open to sharing. And of course both immensely talented. Every photo I took at these two shoots is a favourite, but I think these two in particular capture just a little bit more of the warmth they both exude.

Carmen Pretorius was one of my first friends and colleagues who trusted me enough to stick a camera in her face and let me take her new headshots when I first started learning about photography. She is also one of the most professional, dedicated and kindest souls I have ever known, so getting to photograph her again was and will always be a pleasure and an honour. – Photographed at Artscape on 15/5/18

All of incredible women who have produced work I admire with politics that challenge me. Oh, and of course, good light!

When I met these incredible woman I was drawn to their contagious energy and smiles.
Listening to their interviews, I believed they had incredible stories to share and knew what a difference they could make to their readers.
I left both interviews feeling inspired and excited for what the future holds for woman in our industry as well as my personal journey. I thought these two pictures captured their personalities beautifully.

When I look at these two photos, and think about the vast majority of women who envelope each post on this site, a quote from Tina Fey keeps looping in my mind like a bad (but good) pop song:
“Know what? B*tches get stuff done.”
Perhaps a bit crass to some, but albeit true when it comes to these audacious ladies. Each and every one of you get(s) stuff done. And what a privilege it is to have met you, and shared in your respective stories.
This photo feels particularly special to me because it was the first time I photographed a super talent for Sarafina in my very own home. Dara Beth is some other kind of magic. For such a dainty human, she carries an admirable weight of knowledge and depth of intellect. I watched in sheer admiration as every sentence uttered was stringed together with immaculate precision; a beautifully articulate and passionate theatre practitioner. This photo captured Dara surrounded by a radiant light, which is exactly how I view her. It was delightful having you in my home, Dara! -Photographed on 8/1/18
Walking into Sketchbook Studios, and meeting Julia upon arrival, was surreal. From being a longstanding Suzelle DIY fan, and eagerly awaiting the release of Tali’s Wedding Diary, we were seated in the home of a super talent. Julia has such a sincere, authentic and gracious ease about her and being in her company was comparable to sitting down with an old friend. We laughed, we listened, we admired and we prayed we’d be invited back to the studio! This photo captures what it could feel like to sit down with Julia, over a drink, with some hearty banter. Photographed on 10/1/18

Special thanks to Jesse Kramer, Lucy Brittany Woolley, Sophie Kirsch, Chris de Beer and Candice van Litsenborgh for their contributions this year.
We recently celebrated our 2nd birthday and, as is tradition, asked our photographers to share their favourite photos from this year. Dear Reader, And just like that we've reached another milestone! On September 1st 2018, Sarafina Magazine officially turned two.

Cast announced for The Taming of the Shrew
A historic production of Shakespeare’s popular comedy, The Taming of the Shrew, will be presented at the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre next year.
Alicia McCormick as Kate and Daneel van der Walt as Petruchio in The Taming of the Shrew – photo by Jesse Kramer.
It will be directed by Tara Notcutt and feature an all-female cast and creative team.
Presented by Siv Ngesi and The Pink Couch, in association with Artscape, the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre Trust, and Liquidmatch Productions, The Taming of the Shrew will be performed from 7 February until 3 March 2018. The production forms part of the inaugural Maynardville Open-Air Festival, featuring an exciting programme of music, dance, comedy and more, under the stars at Maynardville.
Award-winning director Notcutt is making history with something never seen on a South African stage: an all-female version of a Shakespeare play. She leads some of South Africa’s most celebrated actresses in a version of The Taming of the Shrew never been seen before: a meeting of classic text with modern twists, including lip-synching, 90s fashion, and an all-female cast playing men and playing women, supported by an all-female creative team. Dara Beth (Nasty Womxn, Just a Song and a Dance) is Assistant Director.
The Taming of the Shrew is Shakespeare’s wonderful battle of the sexes. Matters of gender, marriage, and family come together in this dark comedy of Kate, a headstrong woman, and her tempestuous relationship with Petruchio, the man who is set on wooing and winning her.
In the lead role of Kate is Alicia McCormick (Angels on Horseback: Reloaded, Dirty Words), Daneel van der Walt (Dani and the Lion, The Rocky Horror Show) as Petruchio and Buhle Ngaba (…Missing, The Swan Song) as Kate’s sister Bianca. Lynita Crofford (An Audience with Miss Hobhouse, Violet Online) plays Baptista; Dianne Simpson (Rose Red, The Sisters Ugly) is Gremio and Ann Juries (Krotoa Van Vandag, Hectic Nine 9) plays Grumio. Kathleen Stephens (I Love You Sally Field and Other Stories, Nasty Womxn) is Lucentio, Naledi Majola (The Dangerous Misadventures of Order and Chaos, All of it, Everything, Now, Together) is Tranio, Kate Pinchuck (My Children! My Africa!, Down to A Sunless Sea) is Hortensio and Masali Baduza (Nasty Womxn, The Circle of Life: An Adaptation of The Lion King) is Biondello.
Costume Design is by Mariechen Vosloo, Set Design and Decor by Jo Glanville and Lighting Design by Ronel Jordaan. Choreography is by Cleo Notcutt.
In the 62-year history of Maynardville Open-Air Theatre, The Taming of the Shrew has been performed five times – the first production at Maynardville in 1956, then 1965, 1984, 1996, and 2011.
“I am honoured to be directing my first Shakespearean play at Cape Town’s iconic Shakespearean venue,” says Notcutt. “This historic production is a first, featuring an all-female cast and team, while at the same time honouring the vision of Maynardville’s founders – to present world-class productions of Shakespeare’s plays in the magic of an open-air venue. It is fitting that The Taming of the Shrew was the first play presented at Maynardville, and now it is taking us into the next era.”
Notcutt is a celebrated and prolific director. The Taming of the Shrew will be the fiftieth show that she directs. At 31, Notcutt is also the youngest person to direct a play at Maynardville and the fifth woman to do so. Notcutt has worked in many styles, from intimate drama and physical theatre, to illusion and opera, and now makes her Shakespearean debut. Her directing credits include the international touring hit play …miskien (2009-2014 in cities around South Africa, Amsterdam 2011, Perth 2012, Baxter Theatre 2014), comic book storytelling such as Mafeking Road (2010-2012 at every major national arts festival), Undermined (2014-2017 National Arts Festival, Perth 2015), and the cult political satirical thriller The Three Little Pigs (2012-2014 at every major national arts festival, Baxter Theatre 2013, Perth 2013, Amsterdam, 2013, and Edinburgh Fringe Festival 2013).
The Maynardville Open-Air Festival 2018 is a brand-new festival of music, dance and more – with a classical spin and some contemporary spice. Catch performances by the Cape Town Philharmonic Orchestra, the Cape Town City Ballet, a comedy season run by the Cape Town Comedy Club and a variety of Cape Town’s top performing artists in the beautiful outdoor setting of the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre.
The Maynardville Open-Air Festival 2018 is produced by LiquidMatch Productions and the Maynardville Open-Air Theatre Trust and supported by Diemersfontein Wines and Artscape Theatre Centre.
The Taming of the Shrew will run from 7 February until 3 March 2018 at 20:15 Monday to Saturdays. Tickets cost from R150 to R220.
Spoil someone you love on the extra special Valentine’s Night on Wednesday 14 February, including prizes to be won on the evening.
