View from a Folding Chair

Mónica de la Torre

Never decorative, it embodies a chair’s provisional character.

Utilitarian, never just there, called upon to serve.

Communal, egalitarian, levelling its occupants, gathered for  an occasion.

Rarely will it hold the sitters captive. Its precariousness invites  walkouts, even when secured by an admittance fee.

Repositionable, it favors assorted geometries of attention: the frontal  and single-focussed, the shifting and radial.

Irreverent, whether in an institutional setting or not, signalling  reversible orders.

Possibly carnivalesque, displaying an upside-down world, as in:

    a projection of the high-desert landscape and transit      surrounding an old ice plant in Marfa     requiring no other technology but a lens and a dark room;     ironically inverted in this picture of a tiny fraction of the      planet—     with no Google logo and copyright date camouflaged to      appear like a wisp of a stratus cloud—     is the electrical plant across the street     grids reversed, as is the soundtrack extemporaneously      produced     by the cars and pickup trucks seen fleeting by from east to      west     though by the sound we know they’re going west to east,     and vice versa;

a projection within a projection

these are moving images to experience, but not keep.

Unsung, stacked, piled against a wall, or hidden in closets, folding  chairs will be counted on again since, plastic palace people, they’re  both transience and ritual.

Welcome into the fold. Who cares what the future brings.

"Flip Side" - Mónica de la Torre

In October, transmissions paused temporarily in certain regions of the planet. No marks made it to the page then, hence the retroactive declaratives. If you looked up at the yellow dwarf star at the right time in the right place, you’d see the culprits, sunspots, sitting there available to the naked eye and readily confused with muscae volitantes, a.k.a. floaters, where loops of magnetic field in the sun’s photosphere find their footpoints and launch themselves out to its atmosphere—its corona—tracing arcs of light so beauteous their optimization as screen savers is likely a fait accompli. Set them to Vangelis and they make for even better ambience. The sun's on its twenty-fifth eleven-year cycle, manifesting as alternating bouts of languor and hyperactivity visible in the number of blemishes. News has it that late in the month the sun had an outburst, hurling plasma and highly energetic particles our way. Its mass ejection supercharged the northern lights I've never seen and caused a brief radio blackout across Earth's daylit side, centered somewhere in the South American vastness. Whether is all connects or this is another instance of word magic falls beyond this account's purview, this side of paranormal. Face the sun.                                                           Close your eyes. What do you see.

This translation is inspired by Charles Bernstein’s contribution to Chain 10, which used a source text culled from an email from his Chinese translator, and translated that into multiple languages. It is also of course inspired by the final procedure in Mónica de la Torre’s Repetition Nineteen which translates a conversation by group of translators collectively translating de la Torre’s Equivalencies/Equivalencias into Russian. Outranspo is also currently preparing a transcsritranslation of their translation of the Chinese poem “Lion-Eating Poet in the Stone Den” (pp.)

Materials.

• A text for translation, ideally something that will inspire conversation.

• A transcription surface (pen and paper or computer); alternatively the conversation can be recorded and transcribed later, but there is also something interesting about what the transcriber hears and is able to translate. 

Players.

• Translators, at least two.

• A transcriber, at least one. 

Steps

• Translators translate, talking through their choices, doubts, hesitations etc. as they go.

• The transcriber transcribes what they hear

• The group collectively rereads the transcription, potentially editing.

La Academia Metropolitana de Teatro (AMdT) anuncia a los invitados de su alfombra roja con con motivo de la 4ta. edición de Los Premios Metropolitanos de Teatro - Los Metro, 

Ludwika Paleta, Margarita Gralia, Ariel Miramontes, Dalilah Polanco, Michelle Rodríguez, Regina Blandón, Karol Sevilla, Arcelia Ramírez, Alma Cero, Alejandro de la Madrid, Germán Ortega, Leticia Huijara, Mabel Cadena, Maya Zapata, Mónica Huarte, Chumel Torres, Faisy, Nailea Norvid, Natalia Tellez, Plutarco Haza, Rossana Najera, serán algunos de los invitados especiales que engalanarán el evento.

La ceremonia se llevará a cabo el próximo martes 18 de octubre en el Teatro del Bosque Julio Castillo del Centro Cultural del Bosque.

La antesala de la ceremonia de Los Premios Metropolitanos de Teatro se prepara con una deslumbrante alfombra roja en la que desfilarán relevantes personalidades del teatro en México bajo la premisa "Ser es ser vistx", la temática de este año. El próximo martes 18 de octubre se celebrará lo mejor del teatro nacional en Los Metro, festejo que se llevará a cabo en el Teatro del Bosque Julio Castillo en la Ciudad de México.    Está alfombra roja está diseñada como un “fashion show” que comenzará en punto de las 17:30 hrs, cabe mencionar que habrá ocho personalidades que portarán impresionantes vestuarios que se transformarán durante su paso por esta alfombra roja, además se trata de un espacio que el resto de los asistentes fueron invitados a participar, vestir y realizar el recorrido rumbo a la entrada del recinto bajo la consigna temática de "Ser es ser vistx” que se  basa en las reflexiones que el filósofo francés Jean Paul Sartre planteó en su primera obra filosófica publicada, llamada El ser y la nada de 1943.   En ese texto existencialista Sartre propone que el ser y la esencia no se encuentran en el objeto (en este caso, en el yo), sino en su sentido. Para él, el sentido del ser es ser conocido, “yo soy siempre para Otro”. El acto de la mirada no solo nos da sentido, sino que nos revela la existencia del Otro para el cual somos. Existimos porque el Otro nos mira. Si hay Otro que nos mira, yo soy aquel que no es el Otro: al negar ser el Otro, yo me hago ser y el Otro se establece como Otro. Así, existir no es simplemente estar, sino relacionarse con los demás. No basta con estar entre los objetos del mundo, hay que dirigirse a ellxs, atreverse a ser vistx.   Los Metro recuperan este razonamiento en el que los invitados a la alfombra deberán repensar cómo presentarse ante el ojo del Otro con plena libertad de ser ellos mismos y al mismo tiempo buscar la trascendencia de ser determinado como uno mismo, ser una otredad que captura las miradas de los Otros. Salomé, de Oscar Wilde, en el Teatro Británico

Salomé es una de las últimas obras del escritor y crítico irlandés Oscar Wilde, es una tragedia que narra hechos sangrientos y llenos de una pasión desenfrenada con un lenguaje poético y dramático, que por momentos parece que busca reeditar el estilo del autor del Cantar de los Cantares, pues utiliza similares comparaciones para describir al ser amado, con palabras sencillas pero muchas veces fulminantes. La obra nos habla de Salomé, una jovencita idumea de una belleza extraordinaria, que es hija de una mujer astuta y retorcida como Herodías e hijastra de un rey cruel y caprichoso, como era Herodes el Tetrarca, rey de Judea. Salomé, en mitad de una fiesta, donde Herodes recibe a invitados romanos, descubre en un rincón del palacio al profeta Jokanaán (Juan el Bautista), el cual había sido apresado por despotricar contra el matrimonio del rey con Herodías, la esposa de su hermano. Salomé, a quien los hombres le resultaban odiosos porque siempre la acosaban, se enamora enseguida de Jokanaán, en quien ve un ser casto, bello, frío e inalcanzable, justo como lo es ella para los demás hombres. Jokanaán no quiere ni mirarla y responde con desplantes a sus requerimientos, lo cual obnubila la mente de la princesa, ya que nunca nadie le ha negado nada que ella haya deseado.

Herodes, que está perdidamente enamorado de Salomé, se interesa por lo que está haciendo su hijastra. El rey se encuentra ebrio y embrutecido por el alcohol y por la pasión desmedida que siente por la bellísima joven. Aquí en la obra, tal como nos lo narran los Evangelios, Salomé baila para Herodes, quien se encuentra tan embelesado con la princesa que le promete darle lo que ella quiera. Y Salomé pide la cabeza del profeta Jokanaán en una bandeja. Pero en la obra de Oscar Wilde lo hace por despecho y porque quiere tener, al menos muerto, a un hombre que no le ha pertenecido a nadie.

La obra −con una escenografía, vestuario e iluminación magníficos− se presenta en el Teatro Británico de Miraflores y va hasta el 6 de agosto, los viernes y sábados a las 8:00 p. m. y domingos a las 7:00 p. m. Cuenta, además, con las destacadas actuaciones de Amaranta Kun, Leonardo Torres, Mónica Sánchez, Fernando Luque y Alonso Cano. CIUDAD DE MÉXICO * 5 de marzo, 2024. ) Apro Diputadas y diputados que participarán en la elección consecutiva manifestaron su renuncia voluntaria a apoyos económicos, informó la Cámara Baja en un comunicado. La Mesa Directiva informó que 141 legisladores federales que participarán en la elección consecutiva en el proceso electoral 2023-2024 manifestaron su renuncia voluntaria a los apoyos económicos a que tienen derecho.
