John Darnielle really had something all those times he wrote about the sorrow of beong a strange and monstrous creature simultaneously in love with and terrified of the beauty of the world beyond them.

PIXLRIFFS
I am going to go with esmp1 pix for this because he's the one I'm most familiar with. joke answer:
haha get it because candles. but also honestly this could probably genuinely work in some ways!
more serious answers, because I have two and I can't decide between them:
"I let the sky fall / this is an empty country and I am the king / and I should not be allowed to touch anything" - I feel like this one is . pretty self explanatory lmao
"it will be too late by the time we learn / what these cryptic symbols mean" - themes of knowing what's coming and being unable to change it. also I just have a particular fondness for this song

ok take 2 I've calmed down
what I really love about early to mid mountain goats is johns consistent observance of nature, so many of his songs are rooted in the environment around him, calling out plant and animal species by name and they're central to the story
I've been thinking about maize stalk drinking blood and in Corolla the last couple days specifically but all of full force Galesburg and get lonely kind of have that same vibe where its just as much about the narrator's relationship to environment as it is his relationship to himself. Thoughts.
