Brahms: Symphony No. 3

 aestro Louis Langrée introduced Wednesday’s program by pointing out that the pieces represent the beginnings of Romanticism.

In 1856, Brahms acquired a score of Don Giovanni, which he studied carefully.  Though his Third Symphony is sometimes compared to Beethoven, Mozart’s spirit has the greater impact on it.  

The blast of chords and dissonance convey to the audience the ominous world of the supernatural with the doom that awaits Don Giovanni.  

Such luminaries as Johannes Brahms and Clara Schumann had each performed Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 20.  This week, German pianist Martin Helmchen followed in a sterling  performance which included Clara Schumann’s cadenzas.  

Brahms considered Mozart’s concertos the height of artistic inspiration.  “Playing them,” he wrote to Clara, was “like scooping from a real Fountain of Youth.”

Brahms’ Symphony No. 3 is known for unity and coherence and its three-note motto, F—A flat –F which opens the first movement and which Maestro Langrée explained meant “frei aber froh” (“free but happy”).

Each movement held a special gift.  From the Allegro con brio with the heavenly flutes, to the Andante, always a favorite with music lovers for its familiar melody, to the dynamic Allegro.
