Misadventures - Part Two
Tumblr media
do you remember the knife I kept · the sharper it got, the more you wanted me to use it · I was lying to you, but you were lying too
Warnings: mentions of scars, injuries, alcoholism.
Word Count: 1,810
“Okay, I don’t know about you, but I need a break.” She stretched, arms above her head as he turned to look at her, eyes almost bleary. “Were you sleeping?”
Her brows knitted together as she took off the black nitrile gloves and removed her glasses, setting them down and shutting off the light.
“No,” Tommy hesitated, wondering if it mattered, “Almost.”
As he sat up he watched as she dug through her bag, tapping the new pack of cigarettes between her hands as she looked for a lighter, and quickly ripped off the cellophane.
“Hey,” Hannah poked her head in the room, her shock of dark hair entering the room almost before she did, “no one has been in all day, do you care if I go?”
Quinn shrugged, giving a small nod, the gold filigree earrings that hung threaded through stretched lobes flinging around as she moved, “That’s fine. I didn’t figure anyone would walk in with everyone else being out of town. Just shut the open sign off. I have my keys, I’ll lock up later.”
He watched the exchange, trying to figure out who in the situation was in charge as the other girl departed.
“So, I’m nosy,” Quinn began, flicking the lighter twice to make sure it worked, “what’s the scar on your collar bone from?”
He chuckled, a nod of his head gesturing at the pack of cigarettes, “I’ve been trying to quit but share one of those and I’ll indulge you with the story.”
She relinquished the them, passing off the lighter as well, “I have to grab a sweater I’m freezing, the door is just through the hall to go outside.”
As the metal door clicked closed, he was surprised to see her standing there in the teal sweater he thought long gone over the last few years, but Tommy lit the cigarette, saying nothing as she waited in silence.
“When I was younger, I was rather, hotheaded, for lack of a better way to put it,” she nodded, unbothered by the statement as smoke rolled from between her lips, “discovered it made me a rather good rugby player though. Broke me collar bone playing professionally, recovery time was up to a year, and by the time I could’ve went back, I had bought and flipped enough property that I didn’t need to.”
She shifted, stretching and trying to shake the thought of bone crunching and breaking.
“Timing was good,” he ashed the cigarette, taking a drag from it again before speaking, the way he let his head fall back she found rather attractive, “I would’ve been offered an opportunity for the Olympic 7s team and they ended up getting demolished by Fiji after doing well in the quarterfinals,” he shrugged, “and I’m a sore loser.”
She shrugged, taking a drag on the cigarette, “Well, there’s always a silver lining.”
“Yeah?” He took in the words, nodding as he weighed the words next before he said them, “Well, I think I’ve found the one for all the pain you’re putting me in today.”
She chuckled, a grin forming as he mirrored her position, leaning on his unadorned shoulder against the brick wall. Quinn’s curiosity was truly piqued. “Oh? Do tell.”
“We’ve met. Before.” he nodded once as he spoke, trying to find a way to carefully continue without things being awkward, “And it seems my suspicion was correct that you stole me sweater.”
Quinn took a deep breath, sucking in her bottom lip to clamp it between her teeth as she hung her head. Warmth crept up her neck, trying to think of anything she could remember from being in New Orleans and coming up blank, other than the tattoos she had done, and departing the state hungover and motion sick, nothing rang a bell. “How do you know it isn’t my sweater?”
She almost gasped as she looked back at him, that fucking swan! She knew she recognized it from somewhere.
Her smile and the way she quirked an eyebrow told him the comment was in jest.
Tommy could tell, as her tongue traced the inside of her top lip, fiddling with the backing of the opal that sat perched above the swell of her lips that it was a nervous habit.
“Chelsea’s standings are usually terrible, no one would support them for any good reason.” He cleared his throat before continuing, “You have a tattoo between your shoulder blades of an Egyptian vase, you got it done the week you were in New Orleans, it has black and grey peonies in it. It was new. I only know because it still had the protective film on it and you told me not to fuck with it.”
“It’s called Saniderm.” The words told her all she needed to know, and Quinn’s ears went red as she took a deep breath, trying to hide the smile that threatened to come to her lips, “Well, if they’re so terrible, why do you support them then?”
“I have my reasons.”
She hummed, blowing smoke between her lips.
“Just like I’m sure you have your reasons for not telling me your real name.”
“What did I say my name was?”
“Avery.”
“Well, I didn’t lie. It’s my middle name.” He nodded slowly, not interjecting before she continued, “Listen, I don’t remember any of it, getting blackout drunk on a regular basis has a way of doing that to people, functioning alcoholism is a fuck of a thing. Good news is I haven’t drank since I snuck out of your hotel room that morning.”
“Always a silver lining,” he conceded, keeping to himself the thoughts that bubbled to the surface of hair pulling and her screaming his name.
“Okay,” she clapped her hands together once, the spent cigarette butts discarded in a coffee can filled with sand, “go get comfortable, I’ve just got to wash my hands.”
Q: Oh Jesus Christ Hannah, I’m getting painfully stoned later.
Quinn discarded the sweater back in the closet, taking a moment to regain her composure in the bathroom. Her phone beeped at Hannah’s response.
H: Why, what happened?
Q: Well, I still have a few more hours to spend with the guy I fucked in New Orleans 😬
H: That’s where I recognize him from!
She took a steadying breath, shaking her head at the response, and returning to her portion of the studio.
“It’s actually not Egyptian, although, I suppose that probably wasn’t the focal point of what you were concerned with,” Quinn smirked as she came back, now once again in the grey wrap shirt she had wore before departing, and returned her glasses to her face, “it’s actually a Greek Amphora vase.”
His brow furrowed, “Amphoras were used for the transportation and storage of grain and liquid, were they not?”
Quinn opened her mouth to continue, but closed it once again out of surprise at not having to explain what it was for once.
“My sister deals in antiques.” Tommy offered the clarification without prompting as he situated himself once again face down on the table.
“Amphora vases were also used for grave markers,” she grasped the machine comfortably in gloved hands, perching on the chair once more, “let’s get started again before I bore you with the details of the whole thing.”
He remained relaxed as she applied the power to the foot pedal of the machine once again to make it come to life.
“I have no choice other than to be a captive audience,” he turned his head so she could hear the words better over the sound of the machine, “I am rather stuck here, so you may as well enlighten me, eh?”
She didn’t look up but could feel him watching her as best he could, not that there was much he could see out of the corner of his eye.
“Okay,” she sighed, “the particular depiction of this one, is Achilles slaying Penthesilea, Queen of the Amazons. It depends on which variation you read, but I prefer the version where the Amazons were revered for their fighting spirit, rather than being used as a tool to show the disparity of independent women. It was…just a symbol of something I wanted to put death to, to close a chapter, I suppose.”
“That sounds like something my sister would say,” he chuckled, “so you like art?”
“I went to school for art history, actually,” she felt her shoulder tense as she moved her arm to continue the line she was working on. No matter how many times she pulled a long line, Quinn always felt like she had to fight some incoming intrusion of messing it up, “I was supposed to keep working at the MoMA, that was my job when I moved here and back home I worked as a Exhibition Assistant after I graduated, but the MoMA is where I met Hannah and I ended up here not long after pursuing an apprenticeship.”
“You purchased the shop from Gianna?”
Quinn sat straight as she wiped some of the excess ink so she could see the purple stencil once again.
“Yes. You know her?”
“She was who I expected when I emailed about an appointment with the owner. She did the one with the swan. Not that I’m complaining about the outcome.”
“I bought the shop from her a few years ago. She’s in Pennsylvania now, but she was my mentor for my apprenticeship.”
“I guess I’m in good hands then, eh?”
Quinn smiled, ducking her head to continue working. There was silence between them for awhile, only her music playing over the speakers, before he spoke again, almost startling her.
“So where is home?”
“What?”
“You said ‘back home’, where do you consider that to be?” He had turned his head once again so she could hear him clearly.
“Oh,” she sat straight once again, letting the machine go quiet so that he would have a break also, “Michigan. The west side of the state. Technically, New York is my home now though, that’s just where I grew up.”
She heard his contented hum before the buzz of the machine came to life once more.
“And for you?” Quinn figured it was the polite question to ask, regardless of if she had seen where he was from on his passport or not.
“England, Birmingham. My family is there, but I live here now, for business.” He didn’t sound sad about it, although something resigned to the fact in his voice made her sense that it wasn’t the right way to direct the conversation.
The silence took over once again, and Quinn realized, as she worked her way through the familiar lines, that it wasn’t uncomfortable. She didn’t feel awkward or embarrassed. So, he had seen her fully naked as she couldn’t remember it, of her own accord. It, somehow, wasn’t the worst thing.
She took a deep breath, letting out a quiet sigh as she tried to not let her mind wander that train of thought as she continued working.

Library Wrapped: in 2023, I
Traveled the country with John Waters, twice.
Saw New Orleans thrice (and once through my own eyes)
Saw London and Pembrokeshire “that’s in wales” with a ragtag team of defective detectives.
Went two rounds with some good witches (and had several rounds with good witches along the way)
Had my mind blown with a book turned tv series that was entirely different (& one that was entirely the same)
Found the most healing in a story that wasn’t a self-help.
And cheered like a rugby lad for my new favorite rugby lad… and his mentor… and his mother… and his author.

💙 My top Recs. 💚 Good times ahead.
💛 It was a book. 🧡 Not for me.

Wye Downs - Tuesday 19th September
These travel days are very much means to an end, and certainly the English motorways are the busiest and most stressful I have encountered when driving. Not a lot of fun therefore, so it is necessary to insert small moments of amusement, to look forward to amidst the usual drudge of the journey, worsened these two days by heavy rain.
Lancashire County Cricket was washed out today, but the Rugby World Cup podcasts and a couple of others I follow (Classic Ghost Stories, Dylan Album by Album) just about made up for that.
Tumblr media
But yesterday morning, after an early drenching walking Roja to Shap Sewage Treatment Works, I was off for lunch with my niece and nephew, Cameron and Annabelle, over from Texas at the moment. They are my brother Nigel’s children, but 22 and 18 years old respectively now, and here with Nigel’s first wife, Angela, who I know well of course, and her husband Ben. We had a good lunch in Wetherall reminiscing on so much fun in Texas, and our various Christmas visits, San Antonio, New Orleans, Austin, in Christmases past.
Then it was a quick pop in to one of my favourite bookshops, Bookends in Carlisle, which has an excellent second hand shop adjoined, to pick up a copy of my good freinds’ book, Extraordinary Places By Bike, hot off the shelves. Hugh and Pauline Simmons have been anticipating the book’s publishing for a while now, and having ‘tested’ a chapter for them I am looking forward to it almost as much as they are.
Tumblr media
With my appointment at Hexham Hospital tomorrow morning, I had planned to stay at the Roman Fort of Vindaland, hoping for a good walk in the early evening, and early morning. As great a place to stay as it was, they allow vans for a £5 donation to the National Park, it was hammering down, both in the evening, and the morning, and the night as well, so our hikes were quite brief.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
To say the appointment didn’t go as well as I hoped is an understatement. Penrith hadn’t sent the MRI or X Ray through, so the X Ray had to be retaken, and apparently the guy said, no need for an MRI (so what a waste of time and money in the first place). I was then seeing the person equivalent to the same one I had seen in Penrith in January, and went through exactly the same stuff. In January I was told to expect a wait of about 8 months, today, the guy had no record of that meeting, so the wait begins again, this time he estimates, 12 months.
I’ve written to both Cumbria and Northumbria Healthcare, and will see what they say. They do both seem to be in something of a mess though at the moment.
It does however, mean I can get on with travelling, just with a limp, and sticks.. I only really need to home 15th February for the MOT on the van, so it will be an exciting winter. I have some ideas, and will think them over in the next days, but initially, I’m heading to the Dinaric Alps.
The journey was then a 7 hour one down the A1(M) which went as well as could be hoped, except for the M25 at the Dartford Crossing. I knew there was a hold up there, but rather than deviate through London, I opted to sit it out, and in the end I think that was best. Originally it showed as a 2 hour delay, as I joined the M11, but in the end it was only about half an hour.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I’m parked up at a great place also, just 20 minutes from Folkestone, Wye Downs Nature Reserve Car Park. Again it seems, England is catching on to campervan hospitality, the car park offers the night for a £3 donation, either in the cash box, or by telephone magic. There is good walking to, quiet, good paths, and the claim of the ‘best view in Kent’.

The Spirit Of The Warrior Signature Is Found In The Men Who Bleed Crimson And Cream Shirt
As Rugby Union starts to gather a bit of The Spirit Of The Warrior Signature Is Found In The Men Who Bleed Crimson And Cream Shirt in the US, some professional players from the rest of the world are beginning to come into it. One of the highest profile signings so far is probably Ben Foden, who has 34 appearances for England to his name. Ben has signed for Rugby United New York for the 2019 season. If club rugby gains a foothold in the USA, it may start to see American Football players, particularly those who play for their college but aren’t drafted to the NFL switching sports, as there is no real opportunity to play to a high standard and be paid after college outside the NFL that I’m aware of.

Hoonigan Ken Block Big Ghost 43 Shirt
In terms of skills it depends what position they are moving from and to, but I think a season of training with a pro side and some regional amateur rugby games in the lower leagues followed by 1-2 seasons playing below the top flight would be required, if they had the right attributes to reach the top flight. It could be 2 years in total for a winger, or 4 for a more involved position with higher technical and tactical requirements. A player with exceptional physical attributes like being able to run a sub-11 second 100m at 275lbs and a lethal side-step or being fit at 300lbs and immensely strong and Hoonigan Ken Block Big Ghost 43 Shirt explosive might make it earlier as their attacking threat with the ball in hand would do more to cancel out their shortcomings than a more physcially average player.

She and her teammates had been part-time employees at the plant, but were away at a training camp when the earthquake struck, said DiCicco, who coaches the Breakers.2017 6 Nations Rugby World Cup 2015 Rugby World Cup 2015 Rugby World Cup 2015 Rugby World Cup 2015 2015 World Cup!!!XD!?# The team scrapped its season after the disaster, and Sameshima has relocated to the United States. Her former team, TEPCO Mareeze, was sponsored by the Tokyo Electric Power Company, which operated the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant that experienced multiple meltdowns and a substantial radiation leak in the aftermath of the earthquake and tsunami. We have to shut her down.”įive American players have recently become teammates with Japanese defender Aya Sameshima on the Boston Breakers of Women’s Professional Soccer. “Their team gets their pulse through her. “She’s a great leader,” Christie Rampone, the American captain, said of Sawa. Now it is converting its chances into exquisite and bountiful goals. Since the United States played Japan in a pair of exhibitions in May, Japan has matured. It has discipline, savvy and skill - not unlike France, which created havoc in the American midfield during Wednesday’s other semifinal. With her guidance, Japan possessed the ball 60 percent of the time against Sweden. Sawa’s recent form suggests that is unlikely. Wambach teased Sawa in a television interview with a Japanese reporter in Düsseldorf on Thursday, saying, “I know you’re making your country proud and hopefully you play terrible on Sunday.” “She has put the entire team on her shoulders.” “They call her Princess and Queen back home,” said Abby Wambach, the star American forward and a former club teammate of Sawa’s. In this World Cup, Sawa, 32, scored a hat trick against Mexico and delivered the go-ahead goal in Wednesday’s victory over Sweden. American players are particularly fond of the pioneering Japanese midfielder Homare Sawa - her country’s Mia Hamm - who has played professionally in the United States. The rivalry with the United States has been as friendly as it has been lopsided. While Japan is ranked fourth in the world and reached the bronze-medal match at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, women’s soccer has not often created front-page headlines at home or diverted attention from baseball and sumo wrestling. Even little things like a win can give people courage and hope.” There were so many victims in the area which was devastated.
Tumblr media
“We are still recovering from the disaster. “What we have been doing so far is very good for Japan,” Sasaki said after his team defeated Sweden, 3-1, in the semifinals Wednesday. It is the same type of buoyancy that New Orleans experienced as the Saints reached the Super Bowl in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Just as Japan’s team has drawn inspiration from the perseverance of those displaced by the earthquake and tsunami, so has the country united behind the women’s stirring soccer achievement. “That’s almost never been the case before.” “They feel they can win,” DiCicco, an analyst for ESPN, said of Japan. Until now, the rivalry has been big-sister, little-sister, DiCicco said.
Tumblr media
The Americans have won three times against the Japanese this year and are 22-0-3 over all. On Sunday, Japan will face the United States here in the World Cup final. “Four yellow cards in one match? That’s usually two World Cups’ worth for Japan.” “They’re playing with more fire and bite,” said Tony DiCicco, who coached the United States to the 1999 World Cup title. Japan was given four yellow-card warnings during the match, rare for a team that is known for technical sophistication more than muscle. Stirred in part by the photographs, Japan stunned Germany, 1-0, displaying not only the graceful and crafty passing that is its trademark but also newfound grit against the taller, bigger German team. “They touched us deep in our souls,” midfielder Aya Miyama told reporters. He showed them slide-show images of the earthquake and tsunami that struck Japan’s northeastern coast on March 11, killing more than 15,000 people and forcing one of the country’s professional women’s soccer teams to abandon its season. FRANKFURT, Germany - Shortly before Japan faced the two-time defending champion Germany in the quarterfinals of the Women’s World Cup, Coach Norio Sasaki gave his players solemn, even grim inspiration.
