The scariest people are never the ones who immediately creep you out. They are the ones who are expert at seeming trustworthy. You may already know someone like this, and not realize it yet.
Be it on the Internet or in real life, it is important to be cautious around anyone who starts suggesting things you aren't comfortable with or asking for information that is none of their business.
Things no one taught you about the Internet!
Starting with minors (17 and under in the US)
DON'T POST YOUR AGE! Or age rage. Or birth year. Do not write 'minor' in your bio. This is probably the most common and most dangerous mistake! You will be actively targeted.
Don't pretend you're an adult!!! If a creep sees that you wrote 18 or older but act like a minor, they will do all the same tricks to become your friend, and know they have a legal loophole because they can always claim they didn't know! This is almost more dangerous than just saying "I'm a kid, come hurt me"
Instead just don't say anything! Don't post it anywhere, and don't add it to your bio. If someone asks you for your age, just block them.
Don't share your name or nickname! Even if you don't share your last name, they can pick up enough details about you over time that even a first name is enough to find you.
Instead, use a totally different name! Something like Eli_Bloodsucker is way more fun, just don't use it if your real name or even a real life nickname is Eli, Eliza, Ellie, or anything else even remotely similar!
Don't talk to anyone directly! Be it in comments or asks or in direct messages, they're all dangerous. It doesn't matter if they say they are a minor or an adult. If you can't see their face, don't talk to them. If you find a real life friend you didn't know had an account, don't talk to them. That might not be your friend. You can text your friend directly or talk to them in real life about it later.
Instead, just spread positivity purely form likes and reblogs. Pretend the comment and chat buttons are lava or acid or something. Don't touch them.
Don't share ANYTHING about where you live. Not even country. Don't tell someone about how it's always humid where you live or that there's a storm where you are.
Instead, you can share about weather vaguely later. For example, "a few months ago it snowed and I slipped on ice."
Don't, talk about an activity that would even hint that you are a minor. Don't talk about school, don't talk about piano lessons, don't talk about martial arts class, or football practice. Don't mention growing out of your clothes. Don't mention how your mom grounded you. Don't talk about your little brother barging into your room.
Instead, before posting any stories from your real life, ask yourself if this could also easily apply to someone in their 20s living with roommates instead of family members and working a full-time job. If the answer is yes, then post it, if not, don't. (Good example: I burnt my eggs but I didn't want to waste it so I still ate it. Bad example: My dad made me eggs this morning even though I hate them, and made me eat them.)
Don't post or share pictures or videos of yourself online. Someone can either use it to find you or steal them to lure your friends or other people your age into trusting them.
Instead, find a picture of a duck with a mustache online, and make that you're profile picture. Find a map of Australia and post that as your "outfit check". Way more fun.
Do not trust the person who reblogged this. Do not trust the original poster. Creeps will sometimes post about Internet safety as part of their plan to make you trust them.
So how can you tell who to trust, and who not to? You can't! That's the Internet. Better to play it safe than to risk your actual life over a post or a trend
Adult Internet safety:
Idk, it's your life. You know the consequences you might face. Make your own damn decisions. If your dad can't tell you what to do, then I sure can't.
Oh, and don't interact with people you know, or think, are kids. There is help available for those who are tempted to do this. Don't go down that path. There are resources, there are other ways. Having thoughts isn't a crime, acting on them is. PLEASE talk to a licensed professional.

There's an old joke that Australians are so laid back they're in constant danger of falling over. Known for its sun, surf and occasionally shark attacks, Australia has gone from being the easy-going land Down Under to experiencing a surge of antisemitism that most Jews thought was relegated to the dark annals of Jewish history.
In the line of fire are Australian-Jewish actors, musicians, writers, and others in the traditionally left-wing arts community. They are being pushed by fellow artists to denounce Israel as a modern-day Satan or be banished from the local arts scene.
The attacks and vitriol have shades of Mao's Cultural Revolution where people were publicly humiliated as subversives before being banished to work camps. In this modern-day Australian twist, Jews are simply fired or excommunicated from their artistic communities.
Under attack, these Jewish creatives formed a Whatsapp group where they shared their feelings of alienation with fellow Jewish artists. The group was breached, and chats were stolen and circulated online. Now pro-Hamas keyboard warriors are doxxing and threatening the creatives who used the chat to share their despair as work dried up and friends and colleagues abandoned them.
Saxophonist Joshua Moshe was doxxed and threatened by pro-Hamas supporters simply for being a member of the chat group. The harassment got so bad that his band mates fired him from their neo-soul jazz band via Instagram.
"We explicitly condemn any forms of Zionism, racism, bullying, and antisemitism," his bandmates said, without any irony, as they expelled their only Jewish member. Moshe's wife's gift shop has been boycotted and vandalized.
Actress Sarah-Jane Feiglin is not surprised that Moshe's bandmates turned on him. She's been taunted by actors expressing support of Hamas's Oct. 7 atrocities against Israelis during acting workshops. She's no longer in touch with many of her old friends from film school as well as other actor friends.
"People are being bullied into silence. They are afraid of being cancelled and losing work, so they are shunning their Jewish friends publicly and privately," Feiglin said.
Feiglin was removed from a prestigious clowning masterclass of the sort made famous by Sasha Baron-Cohen. She'd spent months preparing for the class with pre-workshop improv courses. Before the masterclass began, her instructor emailed her to say that she couldn't do the class. He said that she was too emotional because she'd been dismayed during a previous workshop by an actor telling Hitler jokes as well as mocking comments by other actors that alluded to the 230 Israelis taken hostage by Hamas on Oct. 7, including children and young women who released hostages say are being raped by their Hamas captors.
"All of my creative platforms and work opportunities have been taken away from me because I will not be ashamed or apologetic about being Jewish," she said.
Members of the Jewish creatives chat group were largely left-wing artists who disagreed with many policies of the Netanyahu government and were devastated by the loss of life among Palestinians from the Israeli military onslaught on Hamas in Gaza. They are also deeply wounded by the minimization, justification, and denial by fellow artists of the Oct. 7 murders and rapes by Hamas.
One of the turning points for many Jewish artists was a pro-Palestinian protest by several actors, including the son of Hugo Weaving, at the Sydney Theatre Company, in which they donned keffiyehs and made a pro-Palestine speech at the end of a production. Jews were offended not because the actors decried the deaths of Palestinian children but rather because the actors said not a word about the Israeli hostages, including a baby, held by Hamas as well as Hamas's mass murder of 1,200 Israelis on Oct. 7.
Based largely on an influx of Holocaust survivors after World War Two, there are just 100,000 Jews in Australia, or 0.4 percent of the population. The community is so small that 'Jewish' isn't listed as a religion on the national census. Jews have to write their religion next to the word "Other." Some leave it blank, remembering how such information was used by the Nazis for deportation lists to concentration camps.
Now there are new lists; lists of names stolen from Jewish chat groups circulating among pro-Hamas activists. They have become hit lists of Jews for doxxing, boycotts, and death threats. Meanwhile, police have done little to stem the hate, arson, vandalism and calls for violence paraded on Australian streets,
When screenshots of a Whatsapp group of Jewish lawyers were leaked to Australia's The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, the newspapers ran articles filled with antisemitic tropes that could have been pulled from the pages of the Nazi newspaper Der Sturmer during Hitler's rise to power in the 1930s. The articles claimed a "secret chat group" of Jewish lawyers had carried out a "coordinated back-channel campaign" to fire a social media personality and pro-Palestine activist hired as a radio presenter by the ABC public broadcaster, which has a statutory duty requiring impartiality. Chat group members received death threats after the articles were released.
The newspapers put a conspiratorial spin on what was in essence a few people on a Whatsapp group spontaneously deciding to write letters of complaint over an eyebrow-raising appointment of an activist at a taxpayer-funded public broadcaster. The activist, Antoinette Lattouf, had put up social media posts perceived as justifying the Oct. 7 massacre.
"Apparently everyone else can lobby on their own behalf except Jews," posted a Jewish former politician, Philip Dalidakis, on X when the articles came out.
Lattouf was subsequently stood down by the ABC for breaching its social media code. She claimed that she was fired over a Human Rights Watch post, and has sued for unfair dismissal. The matter is still pending. Lattouf's activism and pro-Palestine social media commentary raise important questions about why she was hired at all given the ABC's strict impartiality requirement. Her social media posts have included an Instagram comment hailing as "super important" a call for a "healthy cynicism" of witness testimony of the rape of Israeli women on Oct. 7.
Lattouf was also a signatory on a controversial journalists' letter—signed also by staff at the ABC and the newspapers that ran the Jewish chat group story—that demanded journalists be allowed to "apply as much professional skepticism when prioritizing or relying on uncorroborated Israeli government and military sources to shape coverage as applied to Hamas."
The demand goes against journalistic best practice as it requires reporters give the same credence to the information provided by a democracy with courts, oversight, a free press, and other checks and balances as to a terrorist group whose spokesmen hide in the tunnels of Gaza. A case in point being Hamas's now disproven claims that Israel bombed Gaza's al-Ahli Hospital on Oct. 17 when it was a misfired Islamic Jihad rocket that hit the hospital parking lot. There's no record of any media organization confronting Hamas about its falsehood, which sparked violent protests across the Middle East. Perhaps that's because the Hamas spokesman is incommunicado in a tunnel deep underground somewhere in the Gaza Strip.
The Age has provided little coverage of the rise in antisemitism in Melbourne. Instead, it's issued a series of articles positing whether Israel should exist or become a binational state as was Lebanon before the civil war ended that experiment for good, resulting in the exile of the bulk of the Maronite Christian community and Lebanon's takeover by the Iranian-proxy Hezbollah.
Home to the survivors whose stories featured in The Tattooist of Auschwitz and Schindler's List, the Australian city of Melbourne has the largest community of Holocaust survivors and their descendants in the world outside of Israel. The community thrived until Oct. 7. Since then, Melbourne's Jews, like the rest of Australia's Jewish community, have been hounded by calls to boycott Jewish businesses, vilification of Jewish philanthropists who donated wings to hospitals and collections to art galleries, as well as daily acts of vandalism and threats and occasional violence.
For many Australian Jews, post Oct. 7 Australia has shades of 1930s Germany in which Jewish artists and academics were shunned by their peers, newspapers treated Jews as "Other," and Jewish businesses were boycotted and attacked in what turned out to be a prelude to the Holocaust. While few think it will ever get that bad, Jews have never felt so unsafe and unwelcome in the land Down Under.

hello, i’m N of Final Frontier Publishing, a parody publishing house / bindery involved in fannish bookbinding. i’m an amateur fanbinder who picked up bookbinding in July 2022 and largely bind fanfiction. i’m also a member of Renegade Publishing, a collective of binders that bind fanworks! i am mostly active here on tumblr. If you’re interested to see what projects i’ve done, you can refer to the ‘my books’ tab or click here.
my interests are varied and as such, the fandoms i bind in are diverse depending on what is my jam at the moment. i also have an interest in binding queer fandoms and fics which may not be as frequently seen in the bookbinding fandom sphere. i handbind fanworks mostly for myself and the body of work’s author, and sometimes for fandom friends.
tumblr main: @charlietinpants, AO3: charlietinpants
Thoughts on commissions:
i’m very grateful that people like my bindings and it’s such a compliment for me that people would like to commission my work. however, I currently do not take fanbinding commissions, and am unlikely to do so in the future. This is as (i) i work a full time hectic job and my time to bind is limited and (ii) i’m very much an amateur at work, and wouldn’t want to attach a monetary value to my projects, and (iii) i firmly believe in Renegade Publishing’s ethos of gift economy. as such, i bind author copies as a way of giving back, as and when time permits.
Thoughts on author copies:
If i've bound your work and you'd like an author copy, and won't mind that it might take me many months to get it to you depending on how long my to-bind list is, feel free to reach out to me. I hand-bind all my books from scratch and  may not be able to make you an exact copy (depending on available supplies), but I will try my best to make you something I am proud of and hopefully something you will love. All author copies are gifts, and I do not expect any form of payment, inclusive of shipping, from the author.
Thoughts on learning to fanbind:
if you’re interested in learning how to fanbind - join us at @renegadepublishing. we’re a great community of fanbinders who hang out on discord with different experience levels and everyone is very nice and extremely helpful. there are also free guides and lots of useful resources! i will be the first to admit that as a self-professed bad-at-art-and-craft person, i was very daunted at first while learning to bind, but i can promise you it’s less difficult (and less expensive) than you think!
Thoughts on learning to fanbind in Asia:
Learning how to bookbind in Asia is hard and case in point, I learnt largely through online tutorials and a brief course before my bookbinding teacher immigrated to Australia :sob:. I’m one of the mods of the Renegade satellite server for Asia, so if you’re a fanbinder located in Asia, please feel free to hit me up and commiserate about the difficulty in sourcing for supplies/classes/bookbinding/postage and shipping woes in general.
UPDATES (as of May 2024)
i am currently in the process of a move and my housing situation with regards to bookbinding is tenuous at best. in view of this, my bookbinding pace for 2024 has slowed dramatically to an expected 2-3 books this year until the move is sorted in end 2024. I apologize very much for all the delayed books but as I still wish to preserve the quality of the books i make, i would thank you for your kind patience in waiting for the book to be completed.
my ask box is always open, i do reply PMs and i love to chat about bookbinding! :)

Hi, Kirri! I'm from South America and I'm trying to do a research about australian high school. I would like you to clarify some questions I have about school subjects, like: which ones are optional and which are mandatory? also, if you could send me some reliable websites than i can look up. every website i see says something different, can be very confusing so I decided to ask a australian person. Thank you!!!!
Hi, hey, i've been summoned! Okay, i'll admit to you upfront, it's been a hot minute since I was in high school so my knowledge is partly from personal experience but also what is published online. The school structures and curriculum differs from state to state, so it's no wonder you had trouble finding clear answers. I'll try to explain simply:
Australian high schools run from years 7 to 12. (We actually have 13 school years in total including Kindergarten, or preparatory, which is not numbered.) Students can finish in year 10 if they choose not to complete their senior years and test for university entry. If a student finishes in year 10, they get a Record of School Achievement; if they finish senior studies, they get a certificate of education depending on which state they're in:
NSW - Higher School Certificate (HSC)
VIC - Victorian Certificate of Education (VCE)/Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL)
QLD - Queensland Certificate of Education (QCE), Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement (QCIA)
SA - South Australian Certificate of Education (SACE)
WA - West Australian Certificate of Education (WACE)
TAS - Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE)
ACT - Australian Capital Territory Senior Secondary Certificate (ACT SSC)
NT - Northern Territory Certificate of Education (NTCE)
The national curriculum has eight compulsory learning areas, which can be categorized into subjects:
Tumblr media
Then there are a wide range of electives, which vary greatly depending on region, type of school (state-funded vs private/faith-based) etc. Students in years 9 and 10 typically choose three electives. Here is an example of electives available to a school in NSW.
In addition, many schools offer the opportunity to study a vocational (often trade-based) course in preparation for studies after high school, called TVET (TAFE-delivered Vocational Education and Training). Many of these course results in credits toward school outcomes. I guess you could say that TAFE to Australia is like community college to the US.
The school year is broken up into four 'terms', with dates varying between states (see links at end for a list). A typical school day goes from 8:45am to 3:00pm Monday to Friday, with breaks for recess and lunch between period. A 'period' = one class, which typically runs for 40 minutes.
Upon completing senior studies and final exams, students are given an ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank), which they can use to select and be admitted to university. In fact, senior exams have just begun so it's a good time to keep an eye on social media and see how current students are talking about the experience! 'ATAR Day' (when rankings are released) is on December 14, another time to take a look.
Australia also has specialist high schools, such as creative and performing arts schools, intensive English centres (for students with English as a second language), sports schools, and technology schools. All of these must teach the compulsory subjects, but offer the chance to specialize in these areas.

Gates McFadden Talk City Online Interview
Thursday 25th June 1998 at 9.00 pm E.S.T.
Copied and edited from here.
Tumblr media
Mysterygirl:
Gates, welcome to Talk City! What are your thoughts on the ever-popular Star Trek series and its impact on society?
Gates McFadden:
Dear MysteryGirl, many books have been written answering that question. I think, obviously, the series speaks to a lot of people about the possibilities of our future.
Aspects of the series interest me in particular, such as Prime Directive, the concept of people being very different, but yet finding ways to work together successfully and collaborate in non-dogmatic ways is intriguing.
imzadi-1 says:
I loved you on Mad About You. Do you plan to do other sit-coms?
Gates McFadden:
I have no specific plans about doing another sitcom in the future but if a good script crossed my path, I would certainly consider it!
ezguest3 says:
Hi Gates! Does your son's mouse and your two pet cats get along?
Gates McFadden:
LOL! Our two cats believe that they get along very well with the mouse. The mouse however, thinks they are liars! The way we solve this is to keep the doors to my sons room closed at all times! We however, sometimes allow them to observe each other while we are present.
ocampa says:
It is said that you play a larger role in this new movie that's coming up than the last one, in what way?
Gates McFadden:
Where did you get your information ;-) Certainly not from the writers, alas the role is not a full meal.
boncers says:
I have several friends that were lucky enough to see you in Voices in New Jersey... I wish I were any of them!
grin:
They all are still on cloud nine that you stopped your car to speak with them. I feel their joy by proxy... so thanks!
Gates McFadden:
You're welcome! They were a terrific group of women!! I really was very touched that they came to see me in the play. It was nice to know that they were out there in the audience.
nanite says:
Hi there! I saw "Voices in the Dark" with a group of friends on closing night in April (thank you for stopping to talk to us! You have guts!) and we must know when is it going to Broadway and how long will it be there? (Yes, it's going, I just have to know when- you're not allowed to say it isn't going to be there. Thanks :)
Gates McFadden:
It looks like there will be another production sometime in October, (rehearsals with rewrites). But the details have not been worked out so it may change. I will certainly put it on the Star Trek website when I have the information.
trexphile says:
Besides "Voices in the Dark," do you have any other projects/convention appearances scheduled?
Gates McFadden:
:-) Very likely I will be in Australia the end of September or beginning of October. Then I will be in Germany in January and perhaps early May. All of this could change depending on the schedule of the play.
For the next two months I'm concentrating on being a mother :-) Having just come off a play in New York and three months of the movie in LA.
lolalee32 says:
Jessica Lange recently said that she would not start acting today, that back when she was starting "the business attracted integrity, it attracted artists, and I don't think it does anymore". Do you think she's right?
Gates McFadden:
I don't know whether she's right or wrong, that's her opinion. Certainly the entertainment business has changed dramatically in the last 20 years. However, I find that there are still pockets of extraordinary work being done by actors in theater, film and television.
heartofgold says:
Are dramatic arts taught differently in France? Is that why you left to study in France?
Gates McFadden:
I left to study with Jacques LeCoq in Paris because his school offered a unique approach to acting. LeCoq believed artists had a responsibility to work Together to change society for the better. I had classes with musicians, architects, and dancers as well as actors.
He had emphasis on both the spoken word and silence. We studied movement in order to better comprehend immobility. He was the greatest influence in my development as an actress and director.
Now there are many people all over the world, who have incorporated his ideas and techniques into their teaching of acting. Geoffrey Rush, the actor in the movie "Shine" was a student of his. Emma Thompson studied with someone in England who had worked with LeCoq for years, and so on and so forth.
kit_angel says:
I've heard that you've done a lot of stage work but never had the opportunity to see you on stage. What kind of plays have you done and do you prefer stage to television?
Gates McFadden:
I most definitely prefer stage work to television! My roles have ranged from Helena, in "A Midsummer Nights Dream," by William Shakespeare, to Ruth in "The Homecoming" by Harold Pinter.
I've done many comedies such as "Cloud Nine" by Caryl Churchill. I've also done serious plays such as 'To Gillian, on her 37th Birthday" which later was developed into a movie.
mrswizz12 says:
My 13 year old son would like to tell you that you're a great Actress and you're very beautiful
Gates McFadden:
Thank you! One can never hear that too many times!
sarah says:
As you've probably realized by now, there is a large BonC contingent here - all dying to know is the Picard and Crusher romance totally dead - or is there a possibility it may be revived?
Gates McFadden:
In this movie it is definitely not revived. However I encourage you to write letters to Rick Berman the producer suggesting that it be resurrected.
boncers says:
Thank you for being here. Would you be willing to reconsider you stance on an official fan club if it were run professionally?
Gates McFadden:
Yes!
zippity says:
Love Star Trek, and your character is superb - a strong woman, but feminine - wish men could relate to women like that in today
Gates McFadden:
I have found that often they do!
pygmalion2 says:
The drama coach in our school says that acting is not about feeling the required emotions while acting on stage, it's about PROJECTING those emotions as you act on stage. She says if you feel the emotions you'll be distracted from acting. But if you don't feel like the character is feeling, then won't your portrayal look phony?
Gates McFadden:
Keep trying don't give up! This is a tough question to answer quickly. She is not incorrect, however, I often find that during a show the feeling and the technique all come together in moments of pure poetry. It is like an adrenaline rush where you are the character, the play is bigger than yourself and you are almost inside the character and outside it at the same time.
I don't feel that there is only one method to acting. Work with as many good teachers as you can and find what works best for you.
ocampa says:
William Frakes seems like a very nice guy, how is he in private?
Gates McFadden:
Terrific!
boncers says:
Thanks for being here... is there a specific directing project that you'd like to tackle?
Gates McFadden:
Yes, but the script is not finished and has been in development for a year and a half. It's a silent film in black and white.
mick_mouse says:
Why do so many actors want to direct? It seems to me that since power is money, then the real power is in producing since it's the producers that bring the money in. Ultimately, the producer can put financial pressure on a director to make him do what she wants him to do. Am I right?
Gates McFadden:
Sometimes, not always. I went into acting because I loved it. I loved the way it made me feel, the power of my voice, the power of my imagination, the power of a situation, the words of a playwright.
If you are interested in who has the power as in the big boss who makes the most money, then it's a different situation.
Directing is an art, acting is an art, and many fine producing an art. Personally I find acting and directing more creative, but everyone has their own passion.
temporalrift says:
- looking at short description of "guest" - Have you written anything recently?
Gates McFadden:
I haven't finished a script I've been working on for years but with time and courage I hope to finish it soon.
nan1 says:
This question if from my daughter, Rebecca (sorry!). She would like to thank you for your letters and wants to know how Jack's birthday was and how is Coc and Mary Alice. Thanks for giving her someone to admire who is worth admiring!
Gates McFadden:
My sons seventh birthday was probably as good as a seventh birthday could possibly be. We had a bowling party! The cats are fine and hope you're all doing well.
mericcc says:
In your eyes what has been the most significant contribution Dr. Crushers has made to STTNG?
Gates McFadden:
A hypo-spray in the neck .... no ..... just kidding. Probably her determination to rank compassion over the Prime Directive.
captbevpicard says:
Ms. McFadden, I want to thank you for giving us six years of great acting.
Gates McFadden:
Thanks for watching!
jneff says:
What do you think of the Voyager show?
Gates McFadden:
How can I say this without being rude. The truth is I have only watched a part of one episode. Not because I don't like it, but because I watch very little television.
tori says:
What inspired your interest in mythology and masks which Jeff Greenwald brought up in his book, Future Perfect?
Gates McFadden:
I loved Myths ever since I took a class in High School. The man I worked with in Paris, introduced me to the techniques of mask acting. I then researched masks in the major cultures of the world and found they were a significant part of most cultures, so I put together a plaque on the history of masks in theater when I was teaching at the University of Pittsburgh.
Masks can be beautiful in and of themselves, but they become magical when a performer makes them come alive by the way she moves.
hondo1 says:
who was the best male actor that you enjoyed working with over your career
Gates McFadden:
I don't have one favorite. I'd rather say there have been very few that I haven't enjoyed working with.
molakai says:
Hello Ms. McFadden My real name is Michael! I would like to know do you and Marina Sirtis get along like friends as your characters did on the next generation? Thank you for your time to view my question! You're the first star trek actor or actress I have met!
Gates McFadden:
Marina and I are friends, but unlike the characters that we play we don't talk about men together very much, but we laugh a lot and cover a range of subjects.
dixonhill says:
Do you have any plans to do projects with LA Theaterworks?
Gates McFadden:
I performed the Neil Simon play "Chapter Two" this year but have no other projects scheduled with them at this point.
ocampa says:
Could you think of yourself as an doctor in real life?
Gates McFadden:
Oh I think it would be wonderful to be a doctor in real life, especially when I feel awful or my son has the flu.
bsisko says:
where can we write to get autographs
Gates McFadden:
I am taking a short hiatus from signing autographs through the mail because of my need to spend more time with my child. Next year I will probably have more time and at that point I will again be available to sign autographs through the mail.
It is always the best idea to send the mail to Paramount Studios in Los Angeles, California. 5555 Melrose Avenue, Los Angeles, California.
I worry that people won't understand my reasons for not signing autographs, but the truth is when my son wants me to play with him and I have a stack of pictures to sign, I know I'm making the right choice, even though my fans will be disappointed.
kit_angel says:
If tribbles were real, would you actually want one running around your house as a pet? LOL
Gates McFadden:
Absolutely! I would continue to try to train it!
CCCMyst:
Gates, our time is nearly up for tonight. You've been a wonderful guest!! Do you have any final thoughts you'd like to leave us with?
Gates McFadden:
I literally drove home today from Mammoth Lake where we shot some of our final scenes in the new Star Trek movie. I had never been to the mountains in that area and was overwhelmed by the sheer beauty and power of the Sierra Nevada's.
The cast had a fabulous time and I just want you all to know when you watch the movie that even though we were pretending to be very scared, we were having the time of our lives!
Thanks to all of you for the years of support! I love you all!

FINAL IDEA - COLLABORATIVE ARTS PRECINCT
Sip and Paint & Collaborative Art Wall
There has been a common theme with restructuring urban waterfronts, where either the area is developed into a non-place, or it creates a social elite cultural area (Kostopoulou, 2013). Meaning either no one is using the space, or one social group is. Thus, there needs to be a combination of both sides, which includes the existing qualities of the area - infrastructure, nature, historical, and cultural - to be integrated with the innovation of social and economic change (Kostopoulou, 2013). The North Shore Sip and Paint classes have various genres and materials that are inviting for any social group. Additionally, the collaborative art wall constantly provides an area for artists to promote their art. There will always be artists who want to publicise their talent. Thus, the space is constantly being used, and can easily adapt to ever-changing trends.
Will be held here:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Randolph, E., A. (2016). Young People Painting at an Outdoor Art Class [Photograph]. Dreamstime. https://www.dreamstime.com/editorial-stock-photo-young-people-painting-outdoor-art-class-americana-park-avenue-rutherford-nj-usa-local-business-holds-park-image74212273)
There will be food trucks to purchase dinner, which will be on the dock:
Tumblr media
(Shorty’s Food Truck. (n.d.). Home. https://shortysfoodtruck.com.au/)
Tables and chairs set up in the hangar:
Tumblr media
There can be a collaboration with Brisbane’s local artists, and have a different artist each night. Every artist has their own style, so people would have the option to paint all genres and with all materials.
For example, looking at some of Brisbane’s most famous artists, Paul Franklin is known for his colour and texture predominately through abstract and pop-themed work (Wye, 2021):
Tumblr media
(Franklin, P. (n.d.). Ice Gold 120cm x 150cm White Blue Gold Textured Abstract Painting [Painting]. Franklin Art Studio, Brisbane, Qld, Australia. https://www.franklinartstudio.com.au/collections/brand-new-paintings-for-sale-online/products/ice-gold-120cm-x-150cm-white-blue-gold-textured-abstract-painting)
Another example is Erin Nicholls, who does oil paintings of landscapes primarily (Wye, 2021). Classes could be something simple as it would be a 2-3 hour session, and similar to:
Tumblr media
(Nicholls, E. (2023). Neon [Oil Painting]. Erin Nicholls, Brisbane, Qld, Australia. https://www.erinnicholls.com/other-artworks-2)
A good incorporation could be sidewalk chalk art, and the cement space by the hangar could be utilised in those sessions:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
(Roskopp, J. (2020). How one family’s sidewalk chalk art brings joy to neighbors during quarantine. Click on Detroit. https://www.clickondetroit.com/features/2020/07/03/how-one-familys-sidewalk-chalk-art-brings-joy-to-neighbors-during-quarantine/)
There would be and inclusion of 1 session a week on Aboriginal paintings, and have an Aboriginal take the class. It would also be a great opportunity for the class to learn about the culture and history. Additionally, this enhances the site and experience for visitors as it utilises the unique, historical, and cultural aspect of the space (Kostopoulou, 2013).
To book a session, you can do so online and the layout would be a month-view calendar with the images of the painting they would be doing in that session on that day with the artist and time:
Tumblr media
I considered adding the skill level - e.g. beginner - but I didn’t want that to deter people from participating. Such as, marking a session as ‘expert’ may discourage the beginners to come.
There will be a wall built where artists can rent the space and paint their art on their section. There will be a dedicated section for up and coming Aboriginal artists also. It would be built down the middle of this path:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
I thought to put it on the left side, but then that only showcases one side of the wall. So I thought to put down the middle so more artists can show their work.
There could also be a collaboration with art suppliers who sell their products at the end of the sessions, or at some sessions. Since the customers would be interested in art, it is a good way for these companies to be promoted. In return, they can supply materials for the sessions at discounted prices.
There can be sessions throughout the day, however in summer, late afternoon would be ideal as it is cooler and since this is outside, there is no air-conditioning. There will be shading, similar to this:
Tumblr media
(Project Shade, (n.d.). Our Products. https://www.projectshade.com.au/our-products/)
Sessions will start at 4pm Monday-Friday and will finish between 6pm-6:30pm. Then, there is the option to purchase dinner that is from Eat Street as there will be food trucks and everyone can eat in the hangar on the provided tables and chairs. This will be dependent on whether Eat Street owns any moveable food trucks that can easily be relocated. Looking through the images of Eat Street, there are a few places that look like they’re in vans. Any sessions that finish at 6pm on Fridays and Saturdays, there will be no food trucks but there will be encouragement to go to Eat Street for dinner. There can be different food for each session, so then all stores from Eat Street are promoted and it isn’t the same people working each week. There will be sessions held on Saturdays also, considering half of the targeted age group (20-30) are full-timers and may not have days off for the weekday sessions. However, there are companies that are open 7-days and the full-timers’ weekends aren’t Saturday and Sunday. For example, Amart Furniture’s full-time workers have a Friday and Saturday off, or a Sunday and Monday off. Hence, thinking from these workers’ perspectives, they could want and appreciate a relaxing, affordable activity to do on their days off, which may not otherwise be considered as they are a more niche group than the Monday-Friday workers (Dunn, McGuirk. Winchester, 1995). The time of the Saturday sessions will vary depending on the time of year, due to the weather. There could be morning sessions in Autumn and Winter, then they can be in the afternoon in Summer and Spring. There will be no sessions on Sundays as the employees are working on casual rates, but this could be an option in the future to expand when it gains popularity.
To reign in the excitement for the 2032 Olympics, as we get closer to that there can be classes based on the Olympics. Such as painting athletes, equipment used in sports (e.g. pool, hurdles), and green and gold themed art.
I considered having sessions start at 6pm during the week. Looking from an insider’s perspective, making the sessions start at 6pm seems to be more accessible for full-timers and provides more opportunities to come to classes. However, thinking from an outsider’s perspective, it is not appealing to be driving out to North Shore - which would be a distance for some - straight after work, where they will be tired, to come to a park in the dark to paint (Dunn, McGuirk. Winchester, 1995). So, I decided against that.
There will be a wind screen attached to the hangar, so if there is a lot of wind or rain, these can be used and keep the guests comfortable and enjoy their dinner. This can also be used for the sessions if needed.
It will cost $50pp. Other Sip and Paint’s cost between $60-$70 (Fridas, 2023; Paint Juicy, 2023; Pinot & Picasso, 2023). Thus, by dropping the price attracts the audience as it is cheaper than all other classes, as well as free, easy-access parking, and it being outdoors. Even though it is cheaper, it is not too cheap that would make people question the value of the classes. Once it grows in popularity, then there can be consideration of raising the price to meet the market.
What makes North Shore’s Sip and Paint different is that it is outdoors, consequently, the business climate is what puts this concept at a competitive advantage to the pre-existing Sip and Paints (McGuirck, Winchester, Dunn, 1996). Additionally, the creative placemaking for this concept has built on the park area by adding these sessions outdoors, on the grass, in nature, and utilising the open space. Rather than, introducing infrastructure that damages the land, instead, showing respect to the land, whilst enhancing the area, increasing visitation, and accommodating to societal changes (McGuirck, Winchester, Dunn, 1996; Dunn, McGuirk. Winchester, 1995). Moreover, the majority of the locations are in West End, CBD, and Fortitude Valley. These locations have paid parking as well as difficult parking. However, Sip and Paint at North Shore has heaps of free parking, and right by where the classes are held, there will be no worry on missing out on a park also because Eat Street doesn’t start till later on those overlapping days. There is also multiple public transport options if needed. Additionally, I could not find any Sip and Paint’s that offered the purchasing of dinner. Some offered snacks - like cheese and crackers - while others are BYO. The only things staying the same are the painting sessions, and BYO alcohol and cooler.
By adding the wall for artists to rent and display their art, enriches the art-focused environment, and contributes to the creative placemaking. Galleries and museums are similar to this wall, however, I could not find anything where the artists are painting on the wall from scratch. Thus, increasing the competitive advantage over the other Sip and Paint classes - also provides inspiration and something vastly different for the class-takers to view - and galleries/museums as this amplifies the business climate (McGuirck, Winchester, Dunn, 1996). Moreover, this wall will always associate with the shifts in the local economy as it is very easily maintainable and adjustable to societal changes (Dunn, McGuirk. Winchester, 1995), similar to the Sip and Paint classes.

I sometimes still imagine you holding me from behind. A warm hug that gets tighter and warmer till I can't resist and turn around and tell you how much I need you. How much you mean to me. I never said that enough to you in the last few years. The daydreaming still happens, though I don't dissociate anymore when it does. I feel it all now. The pain i've caused you, the pain you've caused me, the pain we went through together, and the pain you went through alone. I also feel all that love. The immense need that you fulfilled in me, and I hope that it was the same for you. You probably don't know this, but i've been trying to live.. a little bit more for myself, and not just pretending for the boys. I've started learning BJJ, together with Ibrahim. You remember one of our first few dates? On fort canning hill, when you admitted you had tried to learn BJJ online to have something interesting to teach me on our date, though it was mostly an opportunity for us to be in such close contact. I had never heard of that sport till that point, and thought wow you know martial arts is that why you're so hunky.. Oh sayang. BJJ is good fun, though i'm sure I would be a much better learner back then, 10 yrs ago. My 34 year old body can barely get a hang of where to put which limb and my usual overthinking and poor memory has gotten much worse since you last courted me. One thing hasn't changed though. I am well aware that I'm past my prime and you have nothing to worry about, nor will I even have any space in my life to with the kids and trying to support them. But with that said.. I miss being touched by you. By a living, breathing man who loves me, and desires me. I miss being held - feeling so safe and yet so vulnerable in that desire for you. Each time I go for a class and there aren't any ladies to pair up with, my heart goes into overdrive and I can barely contain myself. I'm all suited up and obviously have no skin contact, or barely, but those visual thoughts of us enter at the most inconvenient and embarrassing moments. Sometimes I feel like I need to isolate myself because I don't trust the emotions that hit and at times pour out of me. What I would do to have one more of those moments with you. I know we'll be together again someday, but seeing as how I'm the bigger sinner amongst us two, you'd have to wait quite awhile. I've got a lot of atoning to do. I hope you've been hearing our doas, especially Ibrahim's. Idris is getting there, slowly, but steadily. For now, i'm so.. so.. tired sayang. The hole in their young hearts is still raw and bleeding, more obviously so for Ibrahim. I keep trying to find a way to plug it, but there is no use.. it is the price we pay for loving you. and the three of us have gone through so much in a bubble that only us 3 can understand.
Also to catch you up on what you missed out on...
Nyayi passed away.. it was the final week of my iddah period for you. I got the news over a text after I sent the kids to school, and I broke down in waterway point. A security guard tried consoling me, but I could not breathe because I needed you there. You weren't there. I know you had a say in sending a stranger, a nice lady, my way. She made sure I was alright before I headed off to break the news to the kids. Nyayi looked peaceful, and I was happy for her for she got the death she wanted in her room, on the bed that you and I used to sleep on too. Ibrahim insisted on watching her burial, but I hadn't anticipated how much it would have affected him. That was the start of him experiencing some severe anxieties. We're working through that now, with every conversation, hug, therapy and lots of sun and exercise.
We took Idris on his first trip overseas.. it was Australia. The place Ibrahim had doa for us to go to once you got better from your last surgery, which you didn't. You should have seen the look on his face right before he boarded the plane. He never hides any emotions and it would have warmed your heart to see how excited he was.
I went back to work. I guess this is no surprise, and you'd probably have expected me to, but it was hard. I left after 6 months, right before I was confirmed. Im back to square one now, or worse, because I can't figure this part out with the kids still needing quite a bit of attention. Send me a sign if you can somehow, because oh i am lost and frankly don't know who to talk to about it other than a paid therapist, and I know how much you'd hate that.
Ibrahim has done his sunnat, and yes he screamed afterwards and was terrified, but he soldiered on and i'm so proud of him on your behalf too.
Ibrahim is now in primary 1, and he's a class monitor! haha. Yes I had my reservations, but his teacher said he's doing so well, and not surprisingly she's astonished by the "rare level of maturity" she saw in him.
Your brother got married. Ibrahim went, but I must apologize that I just could not go. I tried, but the thought of looking your mother in the eye, and not knowing what I can or cannot say with your relatives after the drama on the day you passed is just too much. I wish I could say that Ibrahim had a good reunion with your mum too, but I guess im still glad he doesn't know what went on behind the scenes and that he still felt your brothers' love for him.
Honestly, the last few nights, or weeks, have been strangely hard. I find myself at this crossroad again to figure out what's my next step, and the only person that I can think of who can talk me through it is you. Was you.
and I finally did it. I cleaned out your closet, took out that bag of clothes from the hospital, inhaled thinking it would still smell like you. It didnt.. it smelled like moth balls. and I let it all come out of me.. the anger that you're not here anymore, the guilt that I could have done or said more to save you, the desperation of wanting nothing more than to you see you walking through that door and hold me as I cried into your superman jacket. I never wanted anything so badly as I did in that moment.
Well, that's it from me for now. Just please do me a favour..
"If you get there before I do, Don't give up on me. I'll meet you when my chores are through, I don't know how long i'll be.. But i'm not gonna let you down. Darling wait and see.. and between now and then till I see you again i'll be loving you... Love me."
Ya, u can laugh if u want. But I know you appreciate that, you closet romantic.
