My first encounter with Terry Pratchett was The Colour of Magic, as read on BBC Radio 4's Woman's Hour. I was a young journalist and I reached out to his publisher for an interview, and thus became the first journalist to interview Terry Pratchett, in Bertorelli's Italian restaurant, in Gower Street. (We remembered it as a Chinese Restaurant in Goodge Street, demonstrating either the fallibility of memory or our fondness for Chinese food.) We became friends.

I was lucky enough to read Terry's books as he wrote them, to become one of his beta readers, and then to collaborate with him. Terry had a brilliant eye for the places where reality and narrative tradition intersect: he had a science fiction writer's mind, let loose on a fantasy world, and he loved to explain and show how things came to be. The last time we saw each other he told me I had to read a book about feeding Nelson's navy – and I still wonder, had he lived, about the Discworld novel he would have written, about ships, and naval battles and all, and the lessons he would have taught us. Because at his best, Terry was a teacher. The kind who makes you laugh while simultaneously realising that everything you have taken for granted so far is utterly wrong. I miss him.

I have to say, I myself don't have many peers in gmmtv, it's always been just KSOGTN. So when we separated, I was quite lonely, because everyone else could still work as a unit, while I was going solo on my own. P'Sing, too, for that matter. So for us to reunite... In our personal lives we still see each other from time to time, but in terms of work I think both of us don't want to be lonely anymore. I feel like now the timing is right. I finally came to the conclusion that I'll need to halt my plan of further studies for now. And if I'm not going abroad to study just yet, working the same old way still makes me happy. I like working where it feels comfortable, and being here makes me comfortable. I don't need to go anywhere else. ❶ ❷ ❸

You're inseparable, for many people, from your Daryl Dixon character in The Walking Dead. Does that stop you from getting certain roles?

I was in Budapest last week to shoot in John Wick's spin-off, Ballerina. I was only able to play small scenes in movies because I wasn't available because of the show. But I think when The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon will be finished, I'm going to cut my hair. I have to do it because everyone knows what I look like. But if I do it now, I couldn't do it later. It's something to spend 15 years on television. You're really identified as this character. I was afraid to get stuck in that role. But I'm doing other things during this series, so maybe it won't be a problem. I don't know. I didn't want to look like Daryl Dixon in The Bikeriders because I've been on TV for so long. So I wore a very different look. When the president of the AMC channel saw the trailer, he didn't recognize me in it. Afterwards, I may take a year off and learn to cook or something. Or learn to surf better.
