1) Stroll from Ueno Park or Nezu to Yanaka and Sendagi. See if you can find Snake Street and follow its curves. Yanaka is as Kyoto as Tokyo gets. Yanaka and Kagurazaka.

2) Shibamata for more old Edo vibes. Cross the river on the ferry. Only ferry in Tokyo.

3) Sunamachi Ginza Shopping District in Koto-ku: another old area that's being transformed by gentrification.

6) Okutama. Walk along the Mitake Valley Riverside Trail, from Ikusabata to Sawai, stop for sake at the Sawanoi Sake Brewery, visit the Gyokudo Museum. You can continue past Mitake to the Okutama Fishing Centre. If you are here in autumn, you'll see breathtaking autumn colours.

7) Yokohama! Not exactly Tokyo, but a nice day trip. Minato-Mirai, Yokohama Foreign General Cemetery (no, seriously, Google it), Sankeien Gardens.

I'm not a food expert, but there are really nice restaurants in all these areas. Add Yakitori Alley in Yurakucho to your list: great atmosphere. (There's a maze under the tracks between Yurakucho and Shimbashi. Well worth a visit, but it gets a bit dystopian.) Museums? Fukagawa Edo Museum in Kiyosumi, all the art museums in Ueno Park. Plants 'n stuff? Yumenoshima Tropical Greenhouse Dome. Shinjuku Gyoen remains my favourite Tokyo park/garden.

It's very touristy, but so iconic that it's really worth it: New York Bar and Grill in the Park Hyatt Tokyo. Expensive though. Cocktail Works is a craft gin bar in Kanda (close to Jimbocho), and a very good alternative (but without the glorious view) (which is the whole point) (actually).

Oh, by the way, Piss Alley in Shinjuku? So yesterday. Try Sankaku Chitai in Sangenjaya or Nogecho in Yokohama instead. Shh, don't tell anyone.

Remission has made it so I pretty much live life completely normal, except I don't eat corn and inject myself with medication once a week. I have an appointment with my GI doc at the end of the month and it's just a phone call. Given how absolutely terrible I was doing (my doctor has said that he was very worried about me when he took me on as a patient cause of how sick I was), I often want my doctor to remark on just how great I am doing. Like, "Oh wow, you responded to medication so quickly and are doing so incredibly well, you are my best and favourite patient, here is a gold star."

Similarly, I want this from my therapist. "Oh wow, you always come to our sessions prepared with a list of updates and feelings, you are my best and favourite patient."

Neither of said anything close to that, but I'm still hoping.

My GI doc did write, "Healed!!!" on my last scope (the nurse remarked, "oh, you got exclamation point!) and my therapist did one day laughingly say she loved me, but that is NOT ENOUGH.

I'm in the middle of writing a ridiculous smutty Satoshoko fic that involves fake dating and is located in Paris and also takes place at a Hermes and Celine store at one point. I hope I finish it. I think it's what I need. I think it's what the world needs.

I think that's it. 33. Kind of a nothing age? Just the age Taylor Swift was last year.

Floorplans of the rooms from "Lost un translation" by Sofía Coppola (2003), twenty years ago...

For the filming of this movie they used the Diplomat Suite of the Park Hyatt Tokyo hotel (See the last drawing) as the main set.

The sleeping area of this suite it became Charlotte and John's standard room and was barely altered for the filming.

The living area of the suite It was converted into Bob Harris' suite by removing the dining zoom and piano and placing a bed next to the large window.

The Diplomat Suite's bathroom doesn' have a shower by the window so the scene of Bill Murray showering was filmed by sticking a fake shower in the bathtub or perhaps in another room.

What you see is an interpretation of those spaces as I think they should be, following the style and decorative line of that hotel.

Pro tip: if you have the financial means and situation*, look into collecting miles and points for travel through credit card sign ups. It will take an investment of time and energy to learn all the rules, collect the miles/points, and research the best redemption options, but you can go on some amazing trips for mind blowing prices.

I started collecting miles and points in 2011 and I’m still doing it now. It’s allowed me to see more of the world than I ever thought possible.

*Disclaimer: collecting miles and points is not for everyone and assumes a certain level of financial means, such as having a good credit score, the ability to pay off your credit card bill in full each month, the ability to meet minimum spending requirements to earn sign up bonuses, and no plans for taking out a major loan within the next 6-12 months (i.e. applying for a mortgage). It’s also easier for those in certain countries such as the US where credit card signup bonuses are more common. And it’s easier if you work with a partner to pool/double your miles and points.
