Short Concept

Alicorns in Gen 5 Equestria are much rarer than they were in the Era of Princess Twilight.

Back then, there were princesses who were all alicorns.

They were strong yet rare ponies who looked over their subjects with care.

Usually that was the cases, but even alicorns can be greedy like Opal.

Nowadays, alicorns were even rarer.

Even Sunny isn't entirely a full traditional alicorn.

Hitch has only ever met one alicorn and that was Sunny.

Hitch is still trying to learn the essence of magic like every other pony in this new Equestria.

To meet you, it would have to be through some big quest with him and the others.

That, or you visit Maretime Bay to see what brought the magic back to Equestria.

It's been so long since you could properly use your powers....

You couldn't fly or use your horn.

It isn't until Maretime Bay became a magic hub that you were able to show yourself again.

Hitch is still trying to understand why Sunny can swap between earth pony and alicorn form.

Which is why when he meets you with the others, he's surprised.

Despite being who knows how old, you still looked young.

You had a mature look to you and your horn and wings didn't look like Sunny's.

You were a true alicorn.

Understandably so, everyone was surprised and excited to see you.

Sunny was, too!

The new alicorn was hoping to have a mentor some day....

Hitch is interested in you and your origin.

He's also a bit suspicious that another alicorn has decided to show up back in Equestria.

He gets to know you when you decide to spend time in Maretime Bay.

You act a lot like a teacher to the ponies in this new age.

Much like the royals of the past.

You help Pipp and Zipp with flying and getting used to flying magic when they ask for it.

You give into Izzy's easily excited behavior and try her unicycling out.

You even help Sunny understand her alicorn magic that she struggles to control.

Hitch is happy to know as of now, you are no threat.

You're a friend... someone he can trust.

He's even happy when you try to understand the new earth pony magic that's been created with him along with parenting Sparky.

Hitch is scared of using this new magic, although you reassure him it isn't a bad thing.

With you, Hitch feels like he can connect with his surroundings in a way.

You're also just so nice and kind.

Although it makes sense as you came from an era of friendship.

You make him feel weak in the knees sometimes.

To be in the presence of a mature alicorn such as you... it's exciting yet intimidating.

He doesn't understand how Sunny can be so laidback and happy about this.

She's around you all the time and says you're the sweetest to her.

Admittedly, he is kind of jealous that you're mostly around Sunny.

Which has lead to him following you around with the hopes of being able to talk with you-

Hitch is popular in Maretime Bay, which causes rumors about you and him.

Said rumors make him quite flustered.

H-He's not that involved in you!

Although he wants to be... he doesn't want you to know yet-

Unlike Sprout, Hitch isn't destructively jealous.

He doesn't feel he's entitled to your care, but he does enjoy it and is saddened when he isn't the center of your attention sometimes.

He's more of the type to silently deal with his jealousy, letting it brew while he rants to the critters around him who will listen.

The most it manifests around other ponies is maybe him having an attitude.

He quickly tries to fix it, however.

He tries to tell himself this little fixation is just a phase.

He's already pretty good friends with you, he hopes that won't change.

It just makes him freak out so much when the critters that follow him always seem to find you, too.

Luckily you don't know why they do it.

Hitch certainly struggles with his obsession due to his morals.

He tries to ignore the urge to stick around you all the time.

Although it's only encouraged by Izzy and Sunny urging him to talk to you more.

Izzy teases him playfully, saying how you two bond over similar things despite your differences.

Sunny even dragged him along for one of the talks between you and her.

The entire time Hitch was rigid or nervous about being around you.

Hitch's bond towards you is that of a close friend, but it's on the edge of being something more.

He's just nervous to say anything dumb in front of you.

Hitch in no way wishes to push others away from you.

He just wants to be included around you.

He cares for all of his friends and you.

He shouldn't let jealousy ruin something so precious.

So most of his thoughts are hidden away.

He doesn't dream of kidnapping you or harming anyone.

He just... hopes you'll include him in everything you do even when you're so important to Equestria's fate.

You cherish the bond between you that much, right?

               “OH MY HOOFNESS!  i missed starlight ridge, this place is too pretty.  so many sparkles!  and someone neeeeew!  at least i don’t remember you from when i was last here… i’m PIPP.  so lovely to meet you.”  bright grin, wings fluttering in excitement, clip clopping her hooves about to crunch the snow.  energy was b u r s t i n g to see the lovely town again, though she was surprised to run into someone new rather than violet.

Thoughts and Spoilers for MYM #8

Episode summary:  Oh no, Sparky has gone missing!! 

Hitch is frantic and the ponies are searching everywhere . . . but unbeknownst to them Misty is hiding Sparky right under their noses, in a supply closet in the Crystal Brighthouse.  Opaline has promised her a cutie mark if she brings Sparky to the dark castle, but wrangling the baby dragon is harder than it seems!  In the end Misty doesn’t succeed in bringing Sparky to the castle, but she does capture some of his dragonfire in a jar for Opaline.

General Thoughts:  Hitch’s connection with Sparky and his worries about whether he’s being a good “dragon dad” were very heartfelt.  I like that we see a male character in a nurturing, child-care role, which is still pretty uncommon. The B-plot with his friends getting in each other’s way was a little too simple for me (it seems like they should be past that) but it didn’t take up too much time so it’s fine.

Misty was the standout of this episode.  You can really see how being raised by Opaline has influenced her.  She will do ANYTHING to get her cutie mark, but she’s also naive and blind Opaline’s true nature . . . Misty promises Sparky that she will return him to Maretime Bay later, as though Opaline would ever let him out of her sight again.

Her return to Opaline, empty-handed (except some dragonfire caught in a jar) is heartrending as she crawls across the floor, practically hyperventilating.  The dragonfire super-charges Opaline’s magic, but not to the extent she wants, and she unleashes on Misty like we’ve never seen before, screaming at her and calling her useless.  This feels like a pivotal moment, where the scales start to fall from Misty’s eyes.  Up to this point she has always been solidly in Opaline’s corner--believing that she is the rightful ruler of Equestria, trying to bond with her, trying to make her proud.  But here she ends up crying in her room.  “For somepony made of fire, I’ve never met a heart so cold.”

Other random thoughts:

- I liked Hitch’s Batman impression.  And he even got Zoom and Thunder in on it!

- Misty managing an incredible acrobatic feat (dodging Sparky’s Home Alone traps), only to berate herself for her one mistake (tripping afterwards) was apropos

- awwww!

- I do feel Sparky is cuter in 2D (like the Tell Your Tale shorts) and 3D.  Like, I don’t find him repellent or anything, but I dunno, his face could be better.  I like his horns a lot, though.

- I really like how strong light shines through the ponies’ ears, just like an actual animal with a thin ear

- Zipp’s stressing me out by leaving the nail polish hanging over the edge like that

- Pipp: “Ooo, that is a good point”

Zipp, instantly: “Is it though?”

- Pearl, the dog!  I assume she’ll be a pet in a future playset

- Hitch tells the seagulls to search “the old defense factory”, which implies that CanterLogic did shut down.  I hope we get an update on what Phyllis is doing at some point.

- the dramatic lighting in Hitch’s Batman scenes are *chef’s kiss*

- Her body language . . . Awww Misty :(

- Opaline says it’s been “hundreds of moons” since she last saw dragonfire; I’m going to assume a moon equals a year because it would be odd for someone to say they saw something “hundreds of months ago”

- The texturing on this tar is just really nice.  Like it has that oil-slick patterning on the top and everything.  Also, both tar and feathers are being stored in the basement.  Oh animators, you so sly!

- Not only does Opaline’s horn and wings fare up, but parts of her body become opalescent 

- Opaline’s speech is incredible.  “Alicorns ruling like they were meant to.”  “No more of this equality stuff.”  “The citizens of Equestria should fear and love their immortal rulers!”  

- This is basically a deconstruction of G4, where that was the role of alicorns.  I remember there was a lot of fan speculation about Sunny becoming the new ruler of Equestria after the G5 movie came out, before there was other media.

- Poor Misty, Opaline was terrifying when she lashed out.  What a great villain though!

- I liked Opaline’s simple, impatient toss of her head to activate her magic scrying pool

- Oh noooo, is that a childhood drawing of Opaline?  Oh nooooo.

Starscout: The Next Generation

Hey there, undeployed flotation devices. Well, I think we're finally out of Friendship is Magic comics! Been quite a long go of it, eh? But... we may be out of FiM comics, but not pony comics altogether. We may have done a crossover between the first and fourth generations last time, but this time we have an all-new generation~

Here's the cover:

Your basic cast cover, but it gets the job done. It's very cute, and if you liked the new movie, your eye might be drawn to this one. Maybe Pipp took the cover picture herself. Really, not much to say on it. It's a nice cover. Instead, how 'bout I give you a brief summary, in case you haven't seen the New Generation movie yet?

So, many years after our Friendship is Magic adventures, long enough that Twilight and friends have slipped into legendary status. The pony races have segregated again, and much of what once was is lost, for now none live who remember it. One who does remember it is Sunny Starscout, whose father taught her all about the magic of friendship. This helps her when Izzy, a unicorn, wanders into town. Soon Sunny, Izzy, and Sunny's childhood friend Hitch end up heading across Equestria to re-unite the races. They soon add pegasus princesses, Zipp and Pipp, to the party and discover a set of three crystals that bring magic back after being installed in Sunny's lighthouse. That's pretty much all you need to know!

We start with a brief flashback of Sunny's beloved but unnamed father. This is to establish that is been long enough that Canterlot is entirely a lost city now. Sunny leaves her flashback to go outside and visit her friends. I really like this bit because it shows off Sunny's alicorn powers really subtly, and better than the movies have. No word of explanation spoken, just you see her exchange a hug with Pipp, and then her energy wings appear. A couple panels later, Izzy pushes her aside and Sunny grows a glowing horn. In short, contact with other races triggers her magic. It's really well done for a show-don't-tell explanation~

Anyways, Zipp and Pipp are introducing Sunny to a game that they fly off to play on a cloud. This leaves poor Izzy alone, at least until she notices Hitch and some other ponies out on a wildlife exploration. Izzy's excitable temperment is a bit much for the animals, though, and she's alone again. She wanders off again, gets a shake, and soon finds herself in the middle of town, where a construction worker's magic suddenly fails him. He's very nearly squashed by the statue he's levitating, with Izzy catching it just in time to push him aside.

But no time for that, as he's not the only one whose magic is failing. Pipp's wings fail and she drops out of the sky. Zipp does as well, but Sunny manages to catch Zipp. Thankfully, her friend Izzy is still on the ground. She grabs the cart she bought her milkshake and spills its contents over on the ground. This builds up enough of a pile of frozen contents that it breaks Pipp's fall. That definitely shouldn't work, but it's a cartoon so I'll forgive it. More than I would in, say, a Batman comic or something, at least~

While the sisters recover, Hitch notices that everypony in Maretime Bay lost their magic in the same way. Even if it's coming back now, the fact that it happened at all is concerning. Zipp replies that this shouldn't be happening--the unity between races is strong right now. So none of this should be happening. Sunny gets a bad feeling and runs for home. Her friends follow, and the feeling she searched--she knows it to be true. One of the Unity Crystals has been stolen (the pegasus crystal, if you're curious).

Of course, all the friends vow to find the thief and recover the missing crystal. While Pipp updates her followers, Zipp seizes control of the narrative and asserts herself as lead detective in this case. Having had no previous cases, she therefore has never lost a case! Can't argue with those results! She's not just flapping her gums in addition to her wings, either. She points out in one of Pipp's selfies, the rainbow is still there, so it's pre-theft. And a vase in the background has moved since it was taken. Zipp finds a curious long white hair entwined around the vase.

With this clue, they turn to Hitch, who has many little animal friends, including Cloudpuff, who is a highly marketable dog-like thing. They offer the strand of hair to Cloudpuff so he can catch its scent. He takes off immediately, and the five friends follow him into the woods. Hours later, though, they're still following and now beginning to doubt Cloudpuff's tracking abilities. And Pipp's run out of battery, so she's going to start getting irritable without her phone. I'd love to see the history of smartphone technology in this world.

With their lead dried up, Zipp, Pipp, and Sunny take to the air to see if they spot anything, while Hitch talks with the animals, walks with the animals, and once again Izzy is left alone. More time passes, and Izzy begins exploring a cave she's just discovered. Moving several rocks aside, she finds a curious wooden gate inside the cave. She pushes the gate open, and on the other side... It's the ruins of Canterlot. A full city, abandoned and left in disrepair. What could've happened here? You'll just have to find out next issue...

Definitely a good setup for an ongoing series. It does require you to have watched at least the first film on Netflix (Make Your Mark came out right about the same time as this first issue, so it’s probably not necessary viewing, and may contradict things here or there), but given it’s a licensed property, that’s fair. Again, that opening couple pages where it introduces Sunny’s alicorn powers all without a word is fantastic. We’ll have to see where this goes in the future! Alas, though, it’s the last thing in my backlog currently, so we’ll have to pick this up another time. Next week... something else~!

🌟 My Little Pony: A New Generation Shining Adventures Collection 🌟

Thoughts on this release under the cut!

I debated forever on whether or not I should get these, but I'm so glad I did! They're absolutely beautiful and of a quality I didn't know I could except from Hasbro any longer! They're a lot bigger than i expected them to be, and their hair is gorgeous! I'm even a fan of the sculpted hair Hitch has. They're very vivid and pretty, and the pegasus have such shiny wings. They don't move though! Probably obvious but I didn't realize until I got it aha.

If you're debating on whether or not to get this set I say go for it!

There are, of course, some downsides. My Izzy has some not so noticeable scratches on her body, and Sunny has a slight defect in one eyes paint. They're all really pretty other than that, I think!

Hitch has to be one of my favorite toy releases so far, definitely my favorite of this pack ( not including Izzy since she's the same as the other release. ). Pipp, as pretty as she is, is my least favorite though since it doesn't really say Pipp to me... if only she came with her crown!

Mlp G5 doodles and thoughts

I just watched the mlp G5 movie and here are some doodles i made of it, sorry they’re kinda bad I haven’t drawn ponies in a long time and here are some of my thoughts:

- Izzy is still best girl, and my highest kin now, my dad says izzy reminds him so much of me it’s uncanny

- I WANT MOOOOORE!! I cant believe we’re gonna have to wait half a year for a 40 minute special and a FULL YEAR FOR THE SERIES

- sprout was straight-up pulling a onceler and I love it

- are sunny’s wings and horn gonna stay with her or she’s gonna get rid of them in the series? I cant believe we don’t know yet!!!

- they didn’t explain the one-sided cutie mark thing too, pretty sure it’s just a design choice like I thought

- I kinda wonder what theyr gonna do in the series since they basically achieved all theyr goals in the movie… MAYBE WE WILL GET AN ALMOST FULLY FILLAR SERIES LIKE I WANTED?? I still want plot tho… MAYBE WE HAVENT SEEN ANYTHING THATS GOING ON YET!! MAYBE MORE LORE TO REVEAL!!

- I don’t like pipp like I thought I would… idk she’s was kinda anoyying sometimes…. I have nothing against girly girls I mean I am one myself and rarity was one of my fav characters in G4 but pipp was just anoyying….. idk but that commercial scene they made for her HAD ME ON THE FLOOR IT WAS HILARIOUS

- these bunny creatures that were following hitch were ADORABLE!!! Also I love hitch more now, he’s pretty neat

- the animation is GREAT and I LOVED the backgrounds

- the songs are bangers too!! My favs were fit right in and danger danger, are they gonna release a soundtrack for the movie too? I hope so cuz I want some of these songs in my playlist

Conclusion: I WANT MOOORE!! I WANT MORE OF THESE DORKS!! WHY WE HAVE TO WAIT A WHOLE YEAR FOR THE SERIES?? WHY!!! I’ll read a lot of fanfics during that time won’t I? Also we Stan izzy in this house

G5 SPOILERS AHEAD!!!

My thoughts! (cute pic added so it wont be just boring text)

So I just saw the movie.

I been waiting for this ever since it was announced. I gotta say I was skeptical about it first but now Im like 'huh I see"

General : lighthearted movie with good music.

Plot : mediogre, I wanted to know more what happend!?

Questions :like SUNNYS DAD??? he died HOW??? HOW.. WHY WERE THE placements in his house..? Why did everyone start hating each other? What happend to Twilight and her friends?

Im sure everyones ASKING these question and I feel like movie should had covered this but maybe its a work for the show.

Thoughts : I really loved the animation! outstaniding and so many refernces and little clues every where that Im not sure I picked these up. So much to notice! The FREAKING pinup calender of Hitch.. GAY... and yeH This leads me to thibk that they are adults like in their 20s? like why else would there be that kind of joke or idk. After all Sunny lives alone too and Izzy? Also Sprout literally has the man child vibes so I doubt they are really young. Late teens at max I think! THE GUARDS were so cute and funny.Dont mind if i SHIP em lol. Also Sprout lowkey gay we all know that. Their worlds were really pretty and I liked how funny sterotypes they all had of each other. The music was so good. Sprouts song is the best!! The ending makes me think SUNNYS wings and horn arent permanent. They were see threw so yeah that wont be a thing in the show so I dont think non of us need to scream about that. Really have so much questions and movie answered so little that it makes me think what did the movie told us? I did really enjoy it but did it explain enough about their current world to us? No absolutely not!

Unicorn/Pegasi/Earth pony:

Another intresting thing to note is how unicorns who use to be higher class ones in g4 are now primitive nations. They live in woods and didnt seem to have any tehnology ? They seem to be like this "hipster" society that lives in woods and collect crysthals and read poems. Anything to just get their time off. Earth ponies have a powerful propaganda going on. A very dictatorship kind of way of thinking. They all work as a little town society like all the tribes but earth ponies propaganda to hate and be scared of unicorns and Pegasi seems much stronger. Their society seems to me like a little town community kind of. They have some technology- doesnt seem to have smartphones but they have movies and other things. Pegasi seems to be most obssed with tehnology and celerbtiy and gossip media. Much like canterlot use to be with lots celebrities and higher class ponies. I guess they just needed soemtjing cuz they lost their abilty to fly so they all came obssed with royal family and celebrities and gossip culture. What im saying each tribe had their own way of coping with things. To unicorns this seemed to be the most hurtful because they had no "fake" hope like the Pegasi had who thought royal family only could fly.

Characthers: Im gonna get hate for this but I really liked Sprout? like I know he is man baby but I thought the dictator ship kind ruling was pretty funny and well he just wanted to make his mom proud. I liked that his mom wasnt insane either? like she saw that the power was getting to his head. Speaking of moms Queen Haven is icon. I like her. She just likes glamour and camera. Nothing wrong with that. I LAUGHED WHEN I SAW THAT THEY HAD GOLDEN JAIL. Pegasi are clearly very wealthy. Zipp to me in this movie was the weakest characther? she barely had any moments of her own. Pipp had more mean energry than i thought like I thought she was gonna be literally like OMG SLAAAY QUEEN YASSS all the time but she gladly wasnt. Im looking forward more to see both of the sisters and their differnces. Kinda reminds me of me and my sister tbh one is all about fashion and expensive things in life and I am well.. I like more earthy things. So im lookin forward seeing those two interact the most.Hitch was pretty cool. He is like mix of applejack and fluttershy. I like him, not bad at all but very charming and clearly adored in town. Ok now the best SUNNY AND IZZY!! they are kinda... fruity hehzhejdjej I MEAN NOT STRAIGHT but also I love how I could see them as literally soulmates in friend way.. the latern thing.. that was so sniff.. I CRIED OK.. SHRED SINGLE TEAR. anywayd Im glad Izzy isnt RANDOM XD RAWR kinda pony I thought shed be. Will see how they are treated later. SUNNY is just precious also SOCIALIST AF.. bruh zjejs idk how I feel about that like she has that vibe love and tolerance to all but it could go so wrong. But Im glad she didnt loose optimism fully in end! She is previous.

The plot is how it is so ILL give this movie solid 8/10. Enjoyable!

Anyways in general I think the movie was good! Go watch it. if not for anything else then the visuals and songs are really good!

   “Wow, wow, wowwwww, I’ve never heard of a Pony having a Unicorn horn and Pegasus wings before.” Izzy joyfully pestered Sunny whilst the “glow-up” glowed down.

   Sunny was bittersweet to see the aetherius wings and horns disappear but it did feel good to be herself. For all her hard work trying to unite all Pony kind, she had never actually envied either the Pegasi or the Unicorns for their bombastic displays of magic. Flight, levitation, all that sounds pretty cool but nothing sounded cooler to Sunny than just being herself. Still, her smile was half let down once the transformation faded.

   “My Father told me that a Pony who possesses all types of magic is called an Alicorn and traditionally, they were Princesses.”

   “Princesses?!” Izzy gasped, eyes going wide. “Like Zipp and Pipp?”

   Sunny nodded her head, “Yep, exactly like Zipp and Pipp.”

   “I think I have an idea!” Izzy squealed. She bounced up and down on all her hooves, her mane and tail flouncing about in her excitement.

   Enchanted, Sunny kept nodding along with Izzy’s bubbling excitement, her head bobbing up and down herself and even her tail flicked.

   “I want to see you tomorrow at my cottage in Bridlewood Forest, by noon sharp, promise.” Izzy said, she was speaking really, really fast, Sunny could barely understand her. “I need to get to work.”

   “O-Oh, okay.” Sunny said and she wished her friend goodbye but Izzy had already taken off like a bottle rocket.

   Sunny was left in the pixie dust and was sort of bittersweet about that as well. She had been half hoping that Izzy - as well as Zipp - could stay over for the night. Then again, it's not like she had anywhere for them to stay since Sprout had destroyed her house. Hitch had, fortunately, pitched in and was going to let Sunny stay with him until repairs to the Lighthouse were finished, or at least up to code for living but still. It would have been nice for Earth Pony, Unicorn, and Pegasus to all spend one night together under a roof for the first time in many, many moons.

   Sure enough, Zipp and Pipp had to regrettably leave as well. There were conferences to have and good graces to earn again in Zephyr Heights so Sunny said goodbye to the sisters and soon enough, Maritime Bay was populated only by Earth Ponies again. It wouldn’t be like that forever, Sunny was sure, but with the sun set and it was getting late, so such sureness would have to wait for tomorrow.

   At least tomorrow was exciting. Sunny could hardly sleep in Hitch’s guest room because she was looking forward to going back and meeting Izzy at her cottage in Bridlewood Forest. Although Sunny could also hardly sleep because her precious childhood home had been partially destroyed was quite depressing but Sunny was determined to look on the bright side. So, she snuggled in under the blanket and reminded herself, it was only temporary and Phyllis had been kind enough to loan out her workers to Sunny since it had been her son who had spearheaded the destruction.

   In the morning, Sunny was surprised by how much rest she did get. She had even slept in; Hitch had gone off to work but had been kind enough to leave some breakfast out for her. So, she ate the fruit salad and yogurt that Hitch had been kind enough to prepare for her and started to plot the trek ahead of her. Once her belly was full, she locked the door behind her and what a beautiful, brand new day it was.

   She could feel the wings that she didn’t have twitch with excitement as she soaked in the morning sunlight. It felt good on her back as she raced through the fields on the outskirts of town, bolting towards her friend’s place. She was giddy. Her friend, the Unicorn, lived out this way and was expecting her for something today. She absolutely couldn’t let herself be late for something so important and precious.

   Arriving at Bridlewood Forest, Sunny could already see the changes that the return of magic and friendship and magic of friendship had brought. The signs disparaging the other tribes of Ponies had been brought down and in their place, welcome posts had been made. Sunny was ecstatic as there was no longer a bar to duck under or jump over but merely a path into the vibrant woods of Bridlewood Forest.

   And they were vibrant. They weren’t dark and foreboding like before, littered with wilted flowers and dull crystals. This was now a place of vivacity, befitting the Unicorn population which had perked up some literally overnight. The crystal spires that jutted out of the soft earth glowed gently; the flowers bloomed brightly. There was a hop and a step in the hooves of the foals and even the adults who had been so long used to the moroseness, carried more of a smile than before. Walking past a few, Sunny overheard a few upbeat couplets of slam poetry here and there.

   Her heart pounded the closer and closer she got to Izzy’s cottage and before she could knock on the door, it burst open. Izzy was grinning in the doorway, the door itself banging and clanging as it recoiled with her enthusiasm. She was trotting on the spot, unable to contain her excitement as she shuffled Sunny inside.

   Sunny was all but dragged by her mane inside Izzy’s cottage as she was just so happy that Sunny was here. Once more, Sunny was enraptured by the utter treasure trove which was the interior of Izzy’s cottage. The outside, like many exteriors to many cottages around, was rather unassuming in mossy, forestry colours but the inside was a cacophony that truly made Izzy, well, Izzy. Her macaroni art and her glass bottles that made music. It was all so vivacious and quirky, there was something new and intriguing in every nook.

   “Here you go, sit down, have a spot of tea.” Izzy said to be a good hostess but by the gleam of glee in her eye, it was clear that she hadn’t just invited Sunny over for a drink.

   But to be a good guest, Sunny parked herself in front of the unfurling rose table and had poured herself some tea. Izzy watched eagerly but before Sunny could bring the rim of her teacup to her lips, Izzy spoke.

   “I have a present for you!” she announced.

   Sunny smiled gently, “I would love to open it.”

   “Oh, you don’t have to, I didn’t gift wrap it becauuuuse,” Izzy’s voice trailed off and her horn glowed with a silver aura and Sunny gasped, watching Izzy do magic was just as much a present to Sunny as any material good but even so, she was delighted by the gift, “I wanted to give you a little show.”

   Izzy laced a circlet over Sunny’s head. Her ears flicked as she tried to be helpful as Izzy’s magic graced her all the same as the precious little circlet that she had made for Sunny. She grinned as she looked up, trying to catch hints of the way light bounced off the various crystals that she was now adorned with. The circlet was the same sort of accessory that Izzy wore at the back of her head, dangling crystals on a thin, woven braid.

   “Look, I made it from amethysts and topaz. Amethysts since they’re lavender-coloured, just like your sparkle, and topazes because I think yellow complements purple quite nicely.” Izzy explained with a smile. “The amethysts will enhance your natural intuition and the topazes will attract good fortune.”

   “Thank you, Izzy, I will cherish this very kind gift forever.” Sunny replied with an earnest smile and even more gracious voice.

   “Your welcome, it's only fitting that a princess has something of a tiara.” Izzy replied and she trotted closer to Sunny, initiating a warm and fuzzy nuzzle between them. “You may not have your horn and wings forever but trust me, you have all the qualities of an Alicorn Princess regardless.”

   “You are too kind, Izzy.” Sunny murmured as she enjoyed the weight of the crystal accessory upon her brow.

ohh thank you!!!!

hm, tips. if this is just about drawing a ponysona, drawing other ponies is very helpful!! as an avid fluttershy fan, i've drawn her a lot since i was young, so at this point in my life i know how to draw ponies pretty well.

but for design? there are a lot of things to consider! for instance, what species do you want them to be? unicorn, pegasus, earth pony, even alicorn? something a bit more out there, like a flutter pony, sea pony, kirin, or breezie? or maybe something that isn't a pony at all, like a zebra, donkey, dragon, or griffin? there are the aesthetics of the species to keep in mind, as well as other things like abilities. for example, over the years my ponysonas have always had wings, because i've always wanted to fly! in the past my ponysona has been a pegasus, but now she is a flutter pony because 1. that adds a butterfly theme to the character and 2. i loved the flutter pony characters in the mlp g3 movies a lot!! try to find something that fits you and what you'd want to be able to do if you lived in equestria.

aside from that, the most important things are the cutie mark (if applicable) and colors! if your ponysona isn't a pony, you don't have to worry about a cutie mark; if they are one, you can use the cutie mark to say a lot about them - heck, you can say a lot with a lack of a cutie mark too! rosy cheeks has a blushing smiley face cutie mark, which not only represents their bashfulness and their desire to make people happy, but also incorporates a major part of my personal iconography (if you've been on my blog for any length of time, you should know i love smiley faces and representing myself with them)! cutie marks can contain a lot of information: the character's talents, goals, personality, aesthetic, colors... experiment! try to find something to represent you - or don't!

if you have a handful of favorite colors that work well together, it's nice to have them on the same sona! it's also a fun idea to try and incorporate some of your colors onto your ponysona: i have golden hair and green eyes, so i gave them to rosy cheeks! this isn't necessary of course, and you should always feel free to make your ponysona look however you want, but i find it nice to incorporate some real aspects of me in the sonas i make. you can also use colors to reflect your ponysona's personality in a similar way to how their cutie mark can: for example, fluttershy has pastel colors to represent her shy demeanor, while pinkie pie is bright and saturated, to reflect her energetic personality. rosy cheeks' colors work in a similar way to fluttershy's, but with the colors inverted, such that she almost looks like stereotypical depictions of cherubs (with pale pink skin and curly golden hair)! this was on purpose, and also ties into inspiration from other characters. rosy cheeks' design was inspired by fluttershy's, as i've just mentioned, but also pipp petals' concept art design, rosy maple moths, and to a very small extent cherubs and cozy glow. i personally have connections to all of these things, so incorporating them all into my ponysona is a nice way to represent that!

Observations about some of the new ponies from the advent calendar because I’m very intrigued by it.

You are a gem, I quite like your outfit and mane, maybe one of Pipps mates?

I’m kinda convinced this might be Sunny’s dad in the movie? Or at least some parental figure to her because he looks exactly like the stallion we saw in the animatic

There is so much fluff I love her, is this like a homage to fluffle puff

These two have pretty interesting designs as well, but I’m particularly a fan of the mates wings

Definitely the guard we saw from the promos. He looks the exact same!

I love them so much. This Minty looking character is so sweet and I love the lanky little unicorn in the back.

All in all, loving the variety!

MLP Movie

So, I just finished watching that new My Little Pony movie on Netflix, and I have thoughts and opinions.

To start, I’m not a ‘brony’, or whatever they’re calling it now. Never really liked G4, but I did pick up a few things about it through osmosis.

The fan-songs do slap though.

So, my review. Spoilers ahead, be warned.

The animation was fantastic. Honestly, it’s beautiful, they did a great job on it. I doubt we’ll have that quality in the series, but who’s to tell? They might pull it off.

The characters were mostly great too. In most to least favorite, we got... Hitch is probably my favorite, honestly. Sunny was okay, though I felt she was a little quick to give up maybe? Idk, it felt kinda rushed to me. Izzy was kind of obnoxious. She was a good character, don’t get me wrong, but I’ve never been a huge fan of the ‘so cheerful they’re stupid’ types. Pipp and Zipp I feel could’ve used a bit more screen time. They feel very one note; they’re twins, one’s a tomboy and the other’s a girly-girl. Seen that a million times over. Sprout, god I wanted to like him so much. But seriously, another momma’s boy who gone mad with power? I feel he would’ve been better if instead of ‘going mad with power’ and ‘trying to take Hitch’s spot’, is if his actions were fueled by paranoia and fear. It would’ve fit better, and it makes more sense about why he’s not locked up for trying to start a world war.

The plot. Oh boy, the plot. It started out so strong, and then felt so rushed in the end. It takes less then three days to get from Maretime Bay to Zephyr Heights to Bridlewood, and then back again. How the hell did Sprout make a fully functional death machine in that time?

And it feels like there are things missing too. What happened to magic to begin with? Did it leave before or after they all separated? Why did they separate? How did they come up with these stereotypes about each other? Was there a war? Did Discord have something to do with it? Why don’t the alicorns lead anymore? Will any of this be answered in the show next year?

Honestly, I don’t think it even needed a villain. The ‘antagonist’ easily could’ve been the hatred they felt towards each other. Like I said above, they could’ve used Sprout to show where hatred and fear like that leads; paranoia and very dangerous ideas. That’s more likely to happen to a person then power-hungry war attempts.

I’m not going to go into the whole ‘Sunny the Alicorn’ thing. Because it looked like magic, so I’m pretty sure her wings and horn dissipated after a while.

But maybe that’s too much thinking for a kids movie about neon horses?

I don’t know, I guess I just expected more. I saw the reactions, right here on Tumblr, to the season openings, and endings, for G4. It always seemed like something big was going down over there. This just almost felt disappointing.

Final thoughts are it’s a good movie. While I didn’t like the plot, I know other’s probably will. None of the characters were all that annoying, even Izzy.

All in all, I give it a solid 7.5/10. It’s pretty good for what it is.

And remember, these are only my thoughts and opinions. They have no barring on what you do, or do not, enjoy about this film.

Thoughts on MYM #1 (”Izzy Does It”)

Like I said before, I decided to watch one MLP Make Your Mark episode per week, to make them last.  So far I’ve only watched “Izzy Does It”.  No spoilers for later episodes please.

I’m just going to yammer about my thoughts on the episode and speculate on what might be coming next. :)

First of all, the animation is VASTLY improved from the 44 minute Make Your Mark special.  The seagulls look cute instead of possessed, the character movement doesn’t have any janky sped up moments, and Sunny’s lips don’t look weird anymore, which I think is due to them changing the lighting.

My guess is the special was rushed because of corporate demands or something.

Plot summary:  It’s Sunny’s birthday and Izzy (sort of by accident) makes her a hair ornament.  Pipp shows it off on her social media, leading to all the other ponies wanting one.  But Izzy doesn’t know how to replicate it.  

Pipp tells Izzy to make the same thing “but better”; Sunny encourages Izzy and tells her to return to her roots.  Roots . . . trees . . . Bridlewood! Izzy heads off to her old home and discovers an abandoned scooter along the way.  Meanwhile at home Pipp has run into a creative block on her new song.  

Just as she’s feeling guilty about giving Izzy “bad advice”, Izzy triumphantly returns. She basically misinterpreted Sunny’s and Pipp’s advice to create her own moral about being herself.  She also fixed / refurbished the old scooter to become her new playset unicycling cart.  Izzy then reveals that she did a remix of one of Pipp’s old songs, to Pipp’s delight.  

While all this is happening, a unicorn without a cutie mark, Misty, is sneaking around town at the behest of a villainous alicorn named Opaline.  Misty leaves Sunny a magic hand mirror that allows Opaline to spy on the ponies, though not when they’re inside the lighthouse.

Thoughts on the plot:  This was a pretty good episode, but it had some parts that could have been made clearer.  Like it was kind of odd that Izzy was fretting about other ponies wanting the hairband when she wasn’t shown being mobbed by them or anything.  I think it would’ve worked better if she had a stall at the craft fair and initially she’s happy fulfilling unique requests for crafts, but after Pipp’s video the other ponies ONLY want replicas of the hair ornament and Izzy feels pressured /  uncreative / stops having fun.

I would’ve cut the stuff with Pipp having creative block and instead Pipp’s subplot could have been, idk, she’s well-meaning but she gives advice thoughtlessly. Like for HER pleasing her fans is extremely important but maybe for Izzy fulfilling her creative spark is more important. She gives Izzy advice, Izzy runs off to Bridlewood, Pipp worries that her advice caused Izzy to run away, she realizes she should think her advice through.

And then obviously the scooter has to be in there, it’s a toy tie-in, so the finale could be Izzy returning to her booth at the craft fair with all her new supplies and this time when the townsfolk want the replica hair ornament she’s like “Let’s try this OTHER craft first, okay?”  (Pipp would be helping with this since she’s the confident friend.) And obviously the ponies love their unique craft, which combines Izzy’s creativity and their own.

Random thoughts:

Misty is soooo cute! I love her and I hope with all my heart that she eventually becomes a main cast member.  (They don’t have a blue pony yet!)  ALSO that would mean they would have two unicorns, two pegasi, and two earth ponies, which I always love.

Opaline is a wonderful villain, she’s so extra. She’s SO MEAN to poor Misty yet I love every line that comes out of her mouth.  “Don’t think, you sound foolish.”

Opaline claims she found Misty as a lost foal and took her in; I kind of think she’s lying and, like, murdered her parents.  Maybe that’s too dark for MLP though.  Unlike Sunny, Opaline’s alicorn horn and wings are real (not translucent) and she is taller than the average pony.  About Princess Cadence’s size.

Tidbits from Opaline and Misty:

- there used to be a cloaking enchantment around Equestria

- Opaline gloats that she’ll be “even more powerful than I was before”

- Misty’s observations about cutie marks are the first time they’ve been mentioned directly in the G5 shows

- Misty doesn’t have a cutie mark but Opaline does

- Opaline talks about getting an ally to help her infiltrate Equestria (not Misty)

Other Random Thoughts

It feels like they don’t know what to do with Sunny.  It’s too bad because I felt like she was well-developed in the movie.  Adventurous, impulsive, a little sarcastic at times . . . Okay, her main life-goal has been accomplished but she should still have a personality!

The humor in this episode was also a big improvement over the 44 minute special.  (With the exception of Izzy building a tower of junk for Sunny’s birthday which was just ???. But yeah, overall much improved.) 

Izzy felt closer to Movie Izzy in this than to Tell Your Tale Izzy, who has mostly felt like Pinkie Pie 2.0.  I’m a big fan of Movie Izzy, so yay! Also the rainbow picture looks a lot like the original MLP logo.  They also played the jingle right at the beginning of the episode!

At one point Opaline says, “So these are the weak little ponies that brought back magic?” and Misty says, “Almost like any pony could do it.”  Which I like.  I don’t think Sunny Starscout was the only pony who could have brought back magic; I think she was simply one of the few ponies willing to try.

Finally, here’s a screenshot of Toots, Sweets, and Windy hanging out. I just thought it was cute.  Also Sweets has a scrunchie in her tail, which I love.

Okay, I see what lessons they were trying to teach here. HOWEVER, you cannot make this in the same universe as the Mane 6 and NOT tell us how this world went to shit. This just undermines everything that crew worked to achieve over their nine seasons. Like, hi, we're going to throw all this progress down the fucking drain. This just hurts so much to see everything broken with absolutely no context. How many tiny fans are going to come into this and go "Mommy/Daddy, I thought Twilight and AJ and Dashie, etc, had everyone getting along. What happened?" And guess what? NO ONE FUCKING KNOWS!!! This would have been so much better had it not been connected to Gen4 at all. Thanks for taking nine seasons of goodwill and ripping their good things to shreds. I fucking hate it. They even had their own story of the three ponies coming together, and this knocks things back BEYOND square one. Like yes, good lessons on racism and fearmongering propaganda, but like, why Hasbro, why couldn't you make this a stand alone without bringing the last gen into it????
