Greenland
Wow, Greenland! This is one place I never thought I would have a chance to glimpse. Admittedly we only had one day ashore in Qaqortoq and another day cruising through the Prince Christian Sound, but what a neat experience. We were tendered ashore in the village of Qaqortoq. This community of about 3000 is rather what I had expected from images I had seen previously. What you can’t absorb from…

Danish Beer Flagon, before 1801
On the front side there is a prominent decorated brass plaque engraved:
THE HOLSTEIN FLAGON, Taken by the grace of God and the courage of Admiral Nelson from the Danish Fleet at the Great Battle of Copenhagen, April 2nd. 1801.
Then above this plaque there is a second smaller silver plaque engraved:
Presented to Lt. William Field on his leaving command of the NASSAU November 1814.
This Flagon was taken from the Danish 64 gun Man-o-War Holsteeen or Holstein (launched 1772) after capture during this great Naval engagement, Nelson's second huge victory, known as the Battle of Copenhagen in 1801. The Danish ship HOLSTEIN after capture was commissioned into the British Navy as H.M.S. NASSAU. It was the fifth Ship in the British Navy, at the time, to be named NASSAU. In 1806 she was part of a flotilla that captured the Prussian Ship "Jonge Bartels","Vissary", "Nicholi" and "Martha".
In 1808 together with H.M.S. Stately they captured the Danish Ships "Prins Christian Frederic", "Industrie" and "Haabet Anker" and in 1809 she captured the French Privateer "Jean Bart". In 1810 the NASSAU was converted to a Prison Ship under the command of Lieutenant William Field. She was sold out of service in 1814.

Claudy Jongstra - Dutch fibre artist (from Stylepark).
Born in the Netherlands in 1963, Claudy Jongstra was trained as a fashion designer. She first came under the spell of felt in 1994 when she saw a Mongolian yurt on display in Nederlands Textielmuseum. The tent had a pattern of laid-in colors. She recognized the technique from pictures, but was overwhelmed by the material itself and the colors.
Jongstra quickly mastered the process of felting and started to make fabrics in which wool was felted with silk fibers or was combined with transparent silk organza. In the mid-nineties this was unheard of, but the process yielded a remarkable combination of transparency and density, of elegance and rawness, of craft and art. Her tireless experimentation with felting techniques is motivated in part by her fascination for the traditional felt production as well as the durable and technical possibilities of wool. The result is an extraordinary range of textiles that are as rugged as they are refined. She works in an autonomous and sustainable manner while controlling the entire process from raw materials to end product including the use of natural dyes.
Jongstra controls the entire process, from raw materials to end product, so that she can operate independently and work in a sustainable manner. Jongstra tends her own flock of rare Drenthe Heath sheep, contributing to the survival of this age-old breed in the Netherlands and to the preservation of the natural landscape. Establishing her own dyeworks has made it possible for her to color her own products with natural dyestuffs rather than synthetic ones starting with madder, St. John's Wort, and African marigold.
Since 2009 Jongstra also keeps her own hortus botanicus where national historic varieties of dye-plants grow. This garden operates as laboratory for the dyes, but at the same time it is a source of inspiration. By breeding plants that have often become obsolete, she contributes to preservation of heritage in this way too. This year she will start with the growth of innovative plants in large fields in Friesland. The first plants of this experiment will be madder, woad and larkspur. Since the mid-nineties, Jongstra's textiles have been used in collections by leading fashion designers such as John Galliano, Donna Karen, and Christian Lacroix. In the late 1990s, the Jedi warriors in Star Wars Episode 1: The Phantom Menace wore coats of Jongstra's felt.
At present, her most important projects involve the embellishment of the interiors of buildings with wall coverings and rugs. She has designed wall hangings and installations for the Dutch government building, the Catshuis, the Dutch Embassy in Berlin, and the entrance to the Public Library in Amsterdam. She closely cooperates in this work with architects such as Jo Coenen, Claus en Kaan, and Rem Koolhaas.
She recently was awarded the prestigious Dutch prize for applied arts and architecture: The Prins Bernhard Cultuurfondsprijs.

Just for fun, inspired by my making my sideblog for my latest work with the Romanian title
Imaginea prin sticla groasă- The image through the thick glass
The English title being a translation (hopefully a coherent sounding one, because I'm not sure if the word image is accurate here??). The intention behind the title: Main character is a dude with severe myopia who lives a generally extremely depressing life. The point I was trying to drive home was that he saw the world in a blurry way literally and metaphorically. Given I was literally 12 when I wrote it, it's impressive for how long I've been obsessed with themes such as mental illness and neurodivergence. Totally not projection.
Cele 5 cărți ale nemuritorilor - the 5 books of the immortals
The title I kind of thought in English first? It was a reference to the video game series me and my cousins were working on, The Immortals, which was meant to be a Final Fantasy type of series. I took installment 13 (of 20) and named it this because there was a group of 5 main characters, each having their own section. I recontextualised the "Immortals" part after deciding this was no longer fantasy by making it about the permanence of legacy or whatever...
Train of Thought - Trenul amintirilor
This one I thought directly in English although the actual thing I wrote only in Romanian. The pun just goes perfectly I think: the characters have a dream sequence and then end up in a hospital after a train accident. The Romanian version literally says "the train of memories" which is also accurate to the story but doesn't go as hard as the English one.
The Land of Eternal Winter (@the-land-of-eternal-winter-novel) - Țara iernii eterne/ Țara iernii veșnice
I have written this story directly in English from draft 0, so I thought the title directly in English, which is why it's hard for me to decide on the proper Romanian title. In Romanian, "etern" is the standard word for eternal, but "veşnic" is the religious coded word, which would kind of fit. My only problem is that it would sound too much like "Țara vieții veșnice" = land of eternal life, aka Heaven, which... besties, the country these characters live in is very very much not Heaven. Neither is it hell btw. No winter-coded hell in this household. If it's not Heaven or hell it means it's Earth, which is kind of the whole point of having such a title. But then using a very religious coded word would ruin in. But the religious word is Slavic!! And my story takes place in a Slavic inspired winterland environment. And my story is very much Christian and has many religious themes and connotations (even eschatological ones if I commit to the bit harder in draft 2). So I'm still torn. Open to opinions
Artificii în ceață (@artificii-in-ceata) - Fireworks in the Fog
I'm patting myself on the back real hard for this one tbh. Fireworks because New Year's Eve is a leitmotif in this story. Also Fireworks are like beautiful (romance) but also made of fire (passion, romantic or otherwise). Fog because it implies something is blurry and hard to see (unclear thinking) or maybe intentionally hidden (see fog machines for example in concerts, where they also have fireworks; the main characters are very much the type of people to go to rock concerts and stuff; the main symbol is secrecy tho). But here comes the best part. In Romanian, "artificii" can mean either fireworks (from singular form artificie) or artifices (from singular form artificiu). And that just fits perfectly. Yes, these characters have a lot of artifice about them.

Christian V of Denmark visits the 'Christianus Quintus', by Christian Mølsted dated 1896
The ship was originally called Prins Christian after the Danish Crown Prince Christian. But after he in 1670 became King Christian V the name was changed to Christianus Quintus.
She was the flagship of Danish admiral Niels Juel in Battle of Køge Bay in 1677 in which the Danes obtained a crushing victory over the Swedes.
In 1684 the ship changed name again to Elephanten because the Danes had built a new and bigger ship that took the name Christianus Quintus.
