I like an interpretation both where Mob is fond of Teru and a little cheesed that he is. A) fits with the 100% arc B) it’s fun. Mob does consider Teru a friend. More than that, he thinks of him as admirable. Impressive. Teru’s the smart, popular guy who can talk to people and get girls, he’s saved Mob’s beloved little bro a couple of times and he’s a reliable substitute if he needs time away from S&S. They’re not the besties of besties, but in day to day life Mob really looks up to him and does care about him.

In the depths of Mob’s subconscious though, he remembers what it was that Teru did to him. 100% doesn’t just go berserk, he intentionally hurts Teru in a way that parallels what he did to Mob. So Mob hates him then—does he? His truest self lashes out where it could never hurt Ritsu…except 100% isn’t his truest self. That’s what the anime cut that I hate the most, which is Mob and 100% negotiating. 100% is instinct and base emotion, Mob is the conscious regulation, and Mob really does care about Teru as a friend. Hurting him drives him to consciousness and then to tears. Teru awakens the kind, careful Mob even as a part of Mob just wants a rematch.

Neither part of Shigeo can be removed. The 100% can’t be denied and the Mob can’t be buried. I think his relationship with Teruki should express that duality and the way I like to see it played out is Mob being hopeful and happy that the cool guy on the block offers him unconditional support. He gets used to hanging out with Teru. He gets used to always having him somewhere in the back of his mind as the person who can be him when he can’t be him (cf previous post about Teru being the substitute when Mob is out for an arc). He just sometimes wishes that the person who is always so kind, lovely, witty, who makes him feel so comfortable—he wishes it was anybody else. But it’s not! The guy who did the worst things in the world to him is someone he can’t help but like, and that’s what’s interesting to me

spent all of work watching season 2 of mp100 and livetexting it to hartley and yeahhhh. season 2 is still my favorite season out of all three despite the back-to-back agony of the mogami and separation arcs

"oh huh, usually getting my official business and chores done for the day energizes me to work on my projects. i wonder why my brain is all scrambled up and i feel both unmotivated and anxious like should be doing something?"

turns out migraine prevention meds have been working so well that i managed to forget how auras for big nasty ones feel lol

wanted to transfer the stuff i worked on during my trip from docs to the working file and start neatening things up but oop

fingers crossed it'll fully clear out before bedtime so i can at least start looking into how i want my tenses to work in the flashback

#yea fic talk #i don't want the entire thing to be in past perfect (i think it's called!)#gotta figure out how to cleanly transition from telling about a past thing #into diving into the moment and then back to present #im also once again thinking about some stylistic choices #like how to refer to characters and what to translate or include as is #like japanese honorifics #prolly just going to go with what's most fun for me and comes naturally #like i don't get how others can do third person pov and use arataka instead of reigen #feels like you're calling your pov character babygirl as if it's a neutral term #then again i tend to have single name ocs and feel strongly about this mostly when im writing other ppl's characters #im not close enough to him to call him arataka when that's not what he's mostly called in the narrative nor what his spinoff is called #okay maybe i saw a post about needing to research cultures and how that affects name use #and like. it was weirdly aggressive but mostly seemed confused on its own points #what narrator calls characters and what characters call themselves and others. don't necessarily follow same rules #and yeah this tangent got too long #point is how the pov character is called is how i or the narrator construct of me calls them #other characters are loosely called what the pov character would call them #in my usual style of writing anyway

Do you ever think about how the show emphasizes Reigen and food constantly. All the time. He's constantly eating and it's how he shows affection to Mob, and it's how he apologizes to Mob for prioritizing clients over him, and it's how he desperately tries to win Mob back over when he crosses the line with him. He's practically begging him not to be mad despite the fact he dug his own grave. And when he's at his lowest it's very clearly emphasized that he's not eating. Hunger is used to constantly emphasize Reigen's need for connection and how he connects with people and it always makes me insane. The first time we see Reigen being an actually pretty good mentor to Mob is when he's eating, so many of the times we see Reigen do the right thing is related to trying to provide for people the only way he knows how to do without messing it up. I don't know where I'm going with this because I haven't analyzed it nearly enough, but god is it so interesting. One day I'm gonna sit down and study food symbolism in mp100 but for now I am just trying to get my Thoughts together. What is up there. I love this show

The Reigen Arataka Deranged NormalMan Review

Do you ever think about how Reigen has like. A really strange belief in The System and How Things Should Be. Like REALLY strange. Whatever he's got going on is so much weirder than "scammer with a heart of gold".

I think it all comes together if you read the 10th Season 3 omake like, seriously interrogate this:

This is normal, if comedically thoughtful and realistic for a shounen character. This guy talks like a mandatory reporter. What's strange is what immediately follows:

"AS A SPIRITUAL SPECIALIST" DOING A LOT OF HEAVY LIFTING HERE REIGEN

Not only did he hunt down the families of the children bullying his client (insane. where did he get that info), he also contacted the school as if he were representing his own son in order to get justice, and then hunted down a source of complaints when the school fell through.

This is like a genuinely bizarre level of commitment to the bit, and the bit is "the system works, and if it doesn't work, we will find a system that does work, and if we cannot, hell or high water it is my PERSONAL RESPONSIBILITY to make the system stop slouching so it works again".

Before I start. Reigen adopting Teru is more IC than you think but I don't think it is IC in the way people think it is. I think about this a lot and I think people who do it because they like Reigen aren't understanding how into his bit he is. Guy who talks to social services

So remember the arc that won people over to Reigen despite the fact he's an asshole who takes advantage of Mob and derides him constantly in order to keep him complacent?

He has Mob's phone on his GPS. This makes sense; he's been taking him out and about since he was 11. Very responsible!

Reigen dismisses the "Boss" mistake thinking well, it's a misunderstanding, but it got me in. Yet as soon as he heard they're committing crimes, he VISIBLY puts on his Boss Pants to chastise them. Again, normal so far. I think any scammer with a heart of gold would do this. (And foreshadowing for why he retried reprimanding the Claw Cadres a second time after getting power.)

Again. He's a scumbag. So he leaves Mob to beat their asses using his previous rhetoric. But then!

Reigen's shady morality is more like "people who can take care of things should take care of things". To him, Mob is the Authority on Espers, and can handle conflict like this. Immediately upon becoming aware he can't, Reigen thinks "oh, okay, so the only person who can take care of things is someone who can deescalate". (Pictured: Deescalation)

Okay. Besides the fact this is insufferable as a general concept - YOU just told him to handle it YOU are the source of his stress - his first step in deescalation is to force Mob to back down. Rather than asking him not to fight, he reestablishes "rules" in order to convince Mob he must back down - the same way he tried using what he said to worm his way out of dealing with this shit - and then sets himself up as the authority figure to which the others must obviously defer in matters of His Boy, like a parent accepting criticism at a PTA meeting. This isn't Reigen claiming Mob so much as "in order for them to not attack Mob, they must view me as a representative for Mob".

And like a good authority figure:

If you think about it, this is like...an objectively very strange and incredibly bold approach to this situation. They're homicidal. Reigen is a DERANGED level of Normal Man. He has this image in his head of normalcy, of the world at standard operating procedures, and reinforces it right through an entire conflict. Carceral beliefs don't even factor into this, simply expressing his principles and expecting them to fold.

And they do lol. I keep wondering how Shou must have felt listening to him talk like that

We see a little more of his good side in work; when he was getting so little work it was affecting his grocery bills, this moneygrubbing scammer still asked for like $200 to clear an entire city of hauntings. (His regular exorcisms are around $30). Fair prices are part of his principles of how the business should be. He operates basically at-cost. He mentions he wanted to come out here because he's bored. He's killing time as a career.

Aside:

Just realized he called Mob in last minute so Mob didn't know he accepted crops instead of money. Shigeo didn't like that

So consider that he never got caught here and there was a call on the news to hunt him down at the end of this bit: for the average viewer of the anime, it's just funny, but this is part of the Mogami pre-arc so we've gotten a hold of him by now; he probably holds an inherent belief that the police will intercept him and not Mob. Why wouldn't they? Why would an adult man want to dress up in a highschool girl's uniform? The System will understand.

Not relevant to my point but I like how he realizes what's wrong with Mob way before the final arc, just not why it's happening. Also he doesn't say anything.

With the way his principles are, you really get the feeling that Reigen does his best to avoid culpability specifically because if something happened that was his fault, he'd have to step up to the plate to compensate for that, which is troublesome to him who is a career time-killer. It does not occur to him that an actual bad person and scammer would not step up to the plate as a matter of course. This is his way

What I find really interesting is that this Militant Insane NormalMan does have a sense of wanting something "special", but rather than whip Mob up the way Dimple did Ritsu, he ended up projecting his own values onto Mob, as if he could recreate a special "self" within him. He's always deriding him and baiting him and lying to him in hopes of creating a superb person that a special individual like Mob finds admirable, as if Mob is the authority on his quality of character. Sad! lol

Anyway, it adds a lot more kick to this famous line. Reigen genuinely believes in Authority

Authority works!

And if Mob (the authority on espers) doesn't work, who's the person who MUST step up to the plate [common sense]? You guessed it.

There are other aspects of Reigen's character that everyone and their dog has already picked up on (his self-loathing is the entire reason the way he talked to Mob in Confession arc hit so hard), but this one's my favourite. He's insane

What I love about Mob Psycho 100 is how we have a kind-hearted protagonist but he is still very human and flawed. And it is meant to scare you and throw you of guard but never is it framed as a moral failing.

He is crushed when he is confronted with betraying his moral by killing in order to save those he loves and listening to his master and running away.

And Mob did hurt people with his powers, intentionally, even when we already knew that he was taught NOT to do that and he is very adamant about not to use his powers in order to hurt people! But instead of being angry or reprimanding, Reigen is pissed at the Claw members who cornered him so much that he felt like he HAD to, that there was no other way.

There are a few times where Mob is on the very edge of 'Murderous Intent' and it is other people who pull him out of it.

And they do it because they know how much it would hurt Mob in the end. Because Mob is a good person! Even when he has these moments!

Mogami's trap did take affect on him, he was pushed beyond the limits and he wanted to cause pain because these people have done nothing but hurt him even though he didn't do anything. And he doesn't understand why people are so cruel without any reason.

Mob was not above Mogami, Mogami's plan had succeeded. And Dimple just takes it in as casual as possible. He quickly realises that this is not the real world, that he isn't alone. But it still allowed him to gain a new view on life.

Mob felt ecstatic and fueled by his powers, how strong they made him feel for a hot second during his fight with Toichiro. Until he sees how scared Ritsu is and he gets thrown back to That Day™

Mob is allowed to not be perfect, this icon of purity how you should always be kind AND pacifistic. Not that he doesn't believe that, but he isn't unwilling to bend if the situation really calls for it. It makes him human and all the more relatable in return

Honestly?

Reigen looooves when you sit on his lap!

but only in private <3

it strokes his ego and makes him feel superior

not necessarily to you just in general

like he’s a somebody 😭

idk it just makes him feel proud

his mom loves him but…..she never thought he would settle down with someone

more like someone would settle down with him

so now that he has you here and now, sitting on his lap?

yeah he feels like some sort of sigma 🗿

brags to practically everyone he’s knows and shows you off

back to the part where he doesn’t like pda

He just doesn’t like it because he feels vulnerable

And it embarrasses him

especially in front of mob

that way you still get the affection you seek and your close but it’s not a big gesture for everyone to see

he cant be seen being open and affectionate!

the first time you sat on him he was very caught off guard and choked on his water

he was blushing but trying to be smooth about it

he quickly put on his cool persona and started flirting to counter his previous reaction

”I’m sure your grateful! Because your certainly lucky to be sitting on the World’s Greatest Psychic’s lap!” 😉

he also prefers it if you sit facing opposite of him oddly enough

i feel this because then we he sits up to his desk he can pull up to it more

but that’s mostly when he’s working

otherwise he lets you decide

he’s never really the one to offer either

not because he doesn’t want you to

he just doesn’t think about it

plus he just lets you come and go as you please :)

he figures when you want to—you will

although I will say if you stop doing it for a while he’ll freak out a bit and wonder if you guys are drifting apart 🤦‍♀️

First Kisses ft The Hamatos

A/N: Three fics in one day?...Why not four?

Raphael

Raph gave out affection almost as easily as he breathed. He heart was so full of love and adoration for every living thing around him. So, when he told you he liked you, you thought it was just him being Raph.

"No, I like like you," Raph said, after a few moments hesitation.

"Oh...Oooh!" You exclaimed, the few braincells bouncing around your skull finally meeting up to give you an actually clear thought for once.

"You don't, uh, have to get back to me right now. I can wait for you to figure out your emotions if you need to. I know this was really sudden," Raph said, rubbing the back of his neck with a small, nervous smile. Oh, this man was going to be the death of you if he didn't stop looking so adorable.

"Raph, I don't need to think on it," you said, placing a hand on his arm, "I like like you too." The phrase felt silly, you hadn't said it since you were in elementary school, but the grin that spread on Raph's face was worth it

Raph gave out affection as easily as he breathed, so was it really that surprising that he pulled you into a kiss no sooner after you told him the words he'd been hoping to hear for months?

Michelangelo

It's family game night, and you being Mikey's special someone (Leo's words, not yours) made you apart of the family. So, you were invited and somehow found yourself in a heated Just Dance battle with Donnie.

"Just give up, my overconfident fellow. You're no match for THE Bootyyyshaker9000!" Donnie exclaimed.

"Oh please. I can take you anyday, Donnie!" You snapped back, hitting all the moves with just as many Perfects and Radicals as he was. It was honestly surprising how good you were at this, or maybe it was just the adrenaline of being able to go against Donnie.

Somehow, by some miracle, you had won. By a singular point, like Sans had beaten Reigen, you had won. And while Donnie was processing the fact that he lost, Mikey was already up and cheering for you.

"You did it! You did it!" Mikey yelled, grabbing you by the waist and spinning you around. "That's my awesome boyfriend!" You giggled as Mikey put you back on the ground, but didn't give you a chance to breathe as you pulled into a hug tight enough to reshape your spinal cord.

"Mikey," you groaned, slapping him arm slightly to get him to let go. Which he did, if only enough to let you breathe.

"Oh, right! Almost forgot! Can't have a victor without a prize!" Mikey exclaimed. You had raised an eyebrow, about to ask what in the world he meant, before his lips came in contact with yours.

Yeah...yeah. You liked this prize.

Casey Jones Jr

Casey hasn't left the spare room since they got back to the Lair. He only left to get some food or use the bathroom, but he didn't stick around to talk. It's been weeks.

The brothers sent you. You were the only one who could get him to talk. So, you slowly openned the curtain to the spare room as to not spook him. Casey had his back turned to you, but he turned around the moment you set foot in the door. It was kinda creepy.

"Hey," you whispered, sitting down next to him.

"Hey," he whispered back.

"Wanna talk about it?" You asked.

"I'm just processing. It's finnaly hit me that...I'm not gonna see them anymore. Master Leonardo, Mystic Michelangelo, Commander O'Neil, any of them. I have them, they're waiting outside, but it's not them. The people who raised me, grew up with me, they're gone. Now, I'm just about if not the same age as the man who raised me. I'm actually meeting Raphael for the first time, instead of just fuzzy memories from when I was a little kid. I'm sitting next to someone who I had heard stories about and admired for years. It's just...so surreal," Casey rambled, holding his head in his hands.

"Well...I guess you'll just have the chance to make some new memories," You said. Casey lifted his head to look at you, skeptical. "It's an awful situation, I get it. But it's up to you to make it a good one."

Casey let out a weak chuckle, wiping the forming tears from his eyes. "Spoken like a true Corporal," he said. You raised an eyebrow, smirking.

"Corporal?" You asked, laughing under your breath as you leaned in a little closer to him. "I like the sound of that."

When your lips met his, it felt cosmically right.

Leonardo

Leo and you panted as Leo slammed the manhole cover shut.

"What was that?!" You exclaimed, throwing your hands in the air. Leo had taken you on a date to this 'cool city under New York,' but you guys got run out two hours in from this gaint crazy spider lady!

"Uh, Big Mama," Leo mumbled, sliding down the ladder to meet you on the sewer floor, "She sorta has the entire place under her boot."

"Seriously?! You thought bringing me there was a good idea?" You exclaimed. Leo sunk back, hugging himself.

"I just thought-" he startes, before you cut him off.

"Cause it absolutely WAS!" You exclaimed, throwing an arm around his shoulder, "Oh my god, that was so cool! Like, yeah, we almost died, but that was the most INSANE first date I've ever been on!"

Leo's previous frown turned into a tentative grin. "Really?" You nodded, kissing his cheek.

"Really," you replied.

Leo's grin widened. "That's great! Wow, was I scared. I thought you'd hate me or something," he said with a relived sigh. A moment passed, before a smirk grew on hif face. "Also, I think you missed earlier."

With a roll of your eyes, you pressed your lips to his for a split second. "Happy?"

Leo shrugged, "It'll do, babe."

Donatello

Today was a slow day. Donnie was working on something, and you were sat in a chair out of his way in his lap, spinning it around as you scrolled mindlessly through YouTube Shorts.

"Dad 2," SHELLDON said, flying over to you and pushing his metal face against your cheek, "Father 2. Papa-"

"What is it?" You asked calmly, putting your phone down.

"I want affection. Father 1 is busy," SHELLDON said. With a fond sigh and a smile, you held the robot helper by the sides of his face, peppering kisses along the top of his head. He let out a happy laugh. "Thank you," he said.

"No problem, son," you said, gently motioning for him to move along, which he did happily. You didn't mind the father-son dynamic you had, but as you glanced at Donnie's hunched over figure, you could tell he had a problem with it.

"What's up, Don?" You asked.

Donnie paused his work, like he had just been caught with his hand in the jar, before going back to his work. "Perhaps Father 1 wishes for some affection as well," he mumbled. You laughed under your breath, standing up and walking over to your boyfriend.

He left out a small, confused noise, sitting up as you put a hand on the back of his spinny chair and spun him around to face you. "Are you actually-" he was cut of by your lips falling in line with his. It was only for a few seconds, but when you pulled back, you were fairly sure you broke him.

Until he suddenly happy wiggled in his chair, hands flapping excitedly. You chuckled, nowing you made the right move that day.

What is your favorite reigen headcanon? (Can be anything- a joke, a serious one etc)

Reigen keeps a candy jar in the Spirits and Such office, a habit that started back when Mob was 10 and he was 24. It was supposed to help him quit smoking, whenever he’d get the urge he’d grab a lollipop or a mint instead, but it had the added affect of a good reward for Mob when going out to eat wasn’t an option.

See, it was initially to help the guilt of being a smoker around a young kid—Reigen didn’t want to be a bad influence of course. But it turned into such an integral part of the Spirits and Such office he keeps the candy jar on display right on his desk. Each of the frequently present kids (some of which are employed) have favorite flavors and brands and whatnot, while Reigen’s only preference is Anything But Lemon (funnily enough lemon is Mobs favorite flavor).

I just. Think it’s really sweet and it’s a headcanon I hold near and dear to my heart <3

No but it is literally canon that Reigen has some sort of natural resistance/tolerance for psychic powers, I will die on this hill.

Not only during the first season finale (which is an arc that still confuses the fuck outta me—I know it was a fake-out but what was with??? the cab driver then???) when Reigen holds and uses all of Mob's power without flinching or even realizing he's got them at first, when Mob pushed a liiiittle bit of power into the twins to help boost their powers and it was so difficult for them to handle they could only do it for a minute or so. Reigen held and used Mob's full power for several minutes, "fighting" with it, and did not break a sweat even though he should be the one least accustomed to having ESP energy yeeted into him.

And when the whole "Some espers can drain people's powers" thing came up I thought that Reigen might've ACTUALLY had powers at one point and it was going to be revealed later that he'd had them stolen—BUT THAT'S NOT THE CASE SO,,,,,WHY IS HE LIKE THAT

In the third season finale, Hanazawa got his clothes literally blown the hell off (again) by Mob's powers, and even the BIC members had their uniforms shredded and blown off when they approached him, but Reigen was. fine? Well not FINE but the sheer force from Mob's explosion seemed to affect him less than the others. The only injuries he really had were from the debris whipping around and hitting him, and he discarded his jacket and shoes on his own instead them being literally blown away or shredded like the others. Plus he's able to get far closer to Mob than literally anyone else, even other powerful espers like Serizawa. (Not counting Suzuki because Mob was literally holding himself back on purpose and he STILL ran away. Prick.)

Maybe it was because Reigen was only trying to talk to him, not fight him or restrain him like everyone else was trying to, and thus Shigeo let him get close 🤔 But that doesn't explain the other stuff!! Reigen Has A Natural Born Resistance & Tolerance For ESP Energy Confirmed!!!!

~ The main character used to be friends with him, but they fought before university and since they returned Roald has been "like silver-plated tin when you wished for, expected, *needed* silver", wandering around flirting with dairymaids "almost as big and blond as he was", stealing the main character's pen, and just generally making a nuisance of himself in every way that occurs to him

~ Roald is, in the narration of the main character Jemis, described as dark blond of hair (along with choice adjectives like strong, broad, and muscular), he is loud and friendly (very rude, Jemis is busy thinking everyone hates him), he flirts with the milkmaids and dresses in outrageously loud old-fashioned style (neither of which makes Jemis jealous nor envious, obviously), he catches Jemis falling off a ladder and then blows right through his careful attempts at distance by calling him by last name and ‘sir’, his thighs are SO muscular (Jemis will never achieve that kind of stature and it vexes him), Roald appears to not hold a grudge against Jemis for that big fight they had before parting ways for university, and now he goes about town drinking and gambling and all around pretending to be an air-head which Jemis KNOWS isn’t the case so WHAT GIVES, they’re childhood friends, why is he pretending to be both unintelligent and careless, and Roald CLEARLY has secrets but he won’t tell Jemis about them (so rude), instead he goes about not answering direct questions and making meandering conversation with Jemis in public (VEXING), pretending to be uninterested in the local mysteries despite always appearing front and centre, casually eating the eyes out of the mysterious fish pie Jemis found in the town square, STEALING his BEST PEN, getting inexplicably snappy when Jemis’ university roommate comes to visit, and going around calling Jemis a “good boy” out loud on several occasions. No one has ever suffered anyone’s company, as well as the inexplicably terrible lack of same person’s company, like Jemis has. Truly what is Roald making of his life. Not even referring to him by a silly nickname can calm Jemis’ annoyed (and nothing else) heart.

~ According to our EXTREMELY reliable narrator, Jemis Greenwing, Roald Ragnor is very simply the most annoying man in town. He’s a good-natured idiot jock, but he and Jemis used to be friends and Jemis knows he could be so much more than that if he just tried. Like, at all. But does he try? No. Instead, he spends all his time gambling (annoying) and drinking (annoying) and bothering Jemis Specifically (annoying) and bothering people who aren’t Jemis (annoying) and flirting with the local girls (annoying) and talking about hunting (annoying) and – well. You get the idea. He comes across as an airheaded twit of a noble, except for the part where he keeps showing up in places he isn’t supposed to be and being blatantly cagey about what he’s doing there. Both of these aspects are, independently, annoying. He’s also obnoxiously large and obnoxiously loud and obnoxiously blond and has obnoxiously muscular thighs. I swear to god I am not exaggerating this. Did I mention Jemis thinks he’s obnoxious?

yeah idk why y'all read this

i was originally going to just post this and have some tags with my reasonings, but i realized that opens me up to too much bullshit from people who may think i'm being unnecessarily mean or whatever. so i'm going to explain exactly why the screenshots above are something i hold issue with.

firstly, and i just want to get this out of the way, this post is not intended to be a hit piece against the creator. i've seen how she reacts to any mild-mannered or slightly joking criticism, so i know this post is probably going to not land well. but it isn't my intention to make her mad or anything--she's writing a piece of content for the internet, which means she is just as open to criticism as any other poster. and what i intend to go into in this post is criticism. i'm allowed to do this, as that is the nature of the internet. people are allowed to critique whatever they please, and if you don't want critique then you shouldn't post. simple as!

i am also making no attempts to posit myself as better than the creator. i'm not doing this for clout or moral superiority or any of that dumb shit. i simply want to discuss something that's been bothering me for a bit, while simultaneously warning people who haven't read this yet (who may be sensitive to the issues above) to steer clear. if things like casual racism or transphobia aren't properly tagged, then readers who are affected by such things run a risk reading this! same goes with people who are triggered by lewd content involving minors. i wanna make sure people are getting a more critical scope of this work than what has been hoisted up by others.

okay, now that i've gotten that out of the way, i'm going to get into my points.

firstly, the subtle and not-so-subtle racism throughout this fic, especially in relation to serizawa. i'm white, so there is only so much i can speak on without trampling over the words of other fans of color, but some of this feels so blatant it's odd it hasn't been noted earlier. it's important to note before i go into it that serizawa is specifically written as half-black half-japanese for this fic, in case the screenshots don't make it abundantly clear. but there are just too many moments of casual racism in this fic. i'm not talking about the plot point of serizawa being bullied as a kid for being mixed; i'm not mixed, so i can't speak on the accuracy there but it is well-known that black people face a lot of racism in japan. i'm talking about how it seems everyone else has these racist moments that aren't acknowledged by serizawa or the narration as being bad.

reigen hypothesizing over serizawa's exact ethnic background is just strange. yes he's a fairly observant guy (he has to be, with his job), but there is no canonical evidence to suggest he would immediately jump to theorizing whether serizawa is american or not. and the way it's posed in that first quote--"he has darker skin and the kind of hair texture that would likely indicate African ancestry"--is not great. that's an extremely inappropriate way to bring up someone's race. i don't think most people would stare at someone and be like "hmmm well your nose shape and hair texture would suggest you're of this race". it's racial essentialization that is only slightly covered up by the excuse of "oh he tweets in english". there are some other smaller moments of questionable wording, like calling serizawa's afro "sloppy" when it isnt (which btw there's another issue with the creator only referring to an afro as a "fro". it's a hairstyle; you're allowed to use the actual name of it). even if reigen cuts his hair in canon, he never states it's because serizawa's afro looks sloppy. (also there's something to be said about the casual racism baked into making your employee cut his natural hairstyle for a job, as that is a very real issue many black people face when wearing their natural hair or even protective styles in the workplace.)

i'm especially bothered by toichiro's very casual racist remarks. toichiro in this fic is a general bother of mine (most of which can be boiled down to "he would not fucking say that"), but the way she chooses to characterize him in relation to serizawa feels gross. calling a black man a slave should be a very obvious red flag, but also saying serizawa (again, as a black man) has a "brutal masculine appeal" is also extremely stereotypical and racist. and really there is just no need for it; toichiro's actions in canon prove how shitty of a guy he is without the need for him to be racist (along with other things i'll get to in a bit). as my girlfriend put it: he doesn't need to be a member of the fucking kkk to show he's a bad guy.

there's also, again, the very casual racist remark of calling serizawa a "dog". i don't care if that isn't the intent; when you are writing a character of color you need to be aware of your wording, even in insults (unless she intended to make tsuchiya racist, which i don't think she did).

secondly, the eugenics/child pregnancy bit. it is surreal to even have to write this, but i seriously do not understand the purpose of either of these bits in the story. they are so minor yet so jarring you can't help but wonder why they're there. once again, i do not think you need to have toichiro doing esper eugenics just to prove he is an evil guy. he has nuance, and by making him casually reference child pregnancy (like that isn't an INSANE thing to say) reduces that nuance to nothing. that's the only reason i could see why that bit was included: to make toichiro look worse. but, even still, the author is running the risk of potentially triggering victims of csa or people who don't want to see that by not properly tagging the mention of it (or, at the very least, warning readers in the intro notes). the only other explanation for it would maybe be shock factor??? but that's a pretty shitty thing to use for shock factor, if i'm honest. also the fact that the esper eugenics was referenced again in a more recent chapter just has me very disturbed and confused. there isn't a canonical explanation for why we see less espers who are women than espers who are men, but that doesn't mean we need to jump to fucking Eugenics. it's weird!

thirdly (and this is probably one of my biggest problems and the main reason i wanted to make this post), the weirdly lewd/sexual language shou uses constantly, along with referring to reigen as a pedo or a creep at several points. frankly, i think it's pretty fucking gross for someone in their near-40's to be writing a 12-year-old talking so casually about sex like that's normal. which, i'm sorry, but it's not. yes, teens know about sex and like to joke about lewd shit. but a 12-year-old is not about to make references to a grown man's virginity. 12-year-olds draw dicks on their desk bc they think it's funny. 12-year-olds say the word "buttfuck" because it has the words "butt" and "fuck" in it, and those are the two funniest words on earth to a kid that age. i literally do not understand the purpose of having shou be so lewd all the time. for one, it doesn't make sense for his character. shou is shown time and time again to be extremely mature for his age, but that maturity extends to shit like assembling a counter-terrorism unit and extending a hand to his father to allow him to try again. and even then he's still just as naive as any other kid his age! the omake where he's telling his guys to go to the "far right corner" based on ritsu’s advice proves that he still has plenty of blindspots that are indicative of his age. leaning into this raunchy, lewd version of shou is just weird. and, again, i think it is made a bit weirder given the author's age!!! not ageshaming or whatever--i'm 23 and i write fanfic, clearly i cannot judge there--but it is just extremely inappropriate in my opinion. also having shou be more versed in sextalk than serizawa is odd too and speaks to a larger issue of serizawa's infantilzation throughout this fic, but that's something i can get into in another post if people want an explanation.

also, the way she constantly calls reigen a creep and even has him being accused of being a pedophile during the twitter cancellation is extremely inappropriate when, again, there is NO CANONICAL BASIS FOR THIS! everyone just calls him a fraud and a scammer during separation arc; there is never a reference to reigen being seen as a pedophile in that arc. and, yes, while there are versions of mob psycho where reigen is very clearly written as a creep (looking very specifically at the netflix adaptation), that doesn't mean it's good. honestly, the creep mentions all just feel like really poor jokes that do not land in the slightest.

finally, the transphobia (aka WHY IS SHIMAZAKI A CHASER). i literally do not know what else to say other than: why? why is this a thing? why is he a chaser? what is the purpose of this? is it a joke? i feel like it's supposed to be, but seeing as the author is cis i don't think that's a joke she should really be making. it not only comes out of left field, but it's just kind of a weird thing to ascribe to a character for no reason. not to mention, it's uncomfortable! trans women deal with enough creepy antics from cis men in real life--why must they be accosted by this guy too? it's just weird and uncomfortable.

i wanna round out this post by saying, once again, that i'm not trying to attack anyone with this post. but i do hope people come away from this with a new perspective on this work, and maybe think twice before recommending it uncritically to someone. to the author specifically, i hope you can read my post without rage or indignance blinding you. i might be a little blunt or rude in parts, but it's only because i'm passionate and i don't mince my words when it comes to things i'm passionate about. to the readers, understand i am not judging you for reading this fic without noticing these things. your own life experiences will give you certain blindspots and there's nothing wrong with that. i have plenty of blindspots of my own! it's what makes us human.

there is more i could say, but this post is long enough. i ask that if you come to me in my inbox or in dms about this that you treat me with respect, as i will do that for you. writing something like this took a lot out of me, as i'm usually not so open about my opinion on shit like this.
