spent all of work watching season 2 of mp100 and livetexting it to hartley and yeahhhh. season 2 is still my favorite season out of all three despite the back-to-back agony of the mogami and separation arcs
#ignorance cloud on#i just love seeing mob develop his own identity and like. genuinely make change! and everyone around him is doing it too#and w the world domination arc its just so fucking cool to see everyone band together and u can literally see With Your Eyes how mob#has impacted all of these people's lives by how they fight and strategize and defend mob#ALSO REIGEN!!!!!!! MY GOD HIS CHARACTER ARC IS SO GOOD IN SEASON 2#end of separation arc literally makes me cry every time#ive watched it twice now and even tho i KNOW whats happening i still cant help but cry#as reigen says 'youve really grown up' FOLLOWED SHORTLY AFTER W MOB CALLING REIGEN A GOOD PERSON#ITS LIKE. UGH. UGHHHHH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!#i texted this to hartley in my teary haze but i love that part especially#because for a while i think reigen believed the only way he could securely become Somebody was through fame or infamy#which is why he didnt mind being a shady guy if it meant climbing the socio-economic ladder faster#but even he was getting bored w his own tricks until MOB SHOWED UP#and from that moment forward reigen BECAME somebody. he was somebody to MOB#AND HE WAS MAKING A DIFFERENCE TO MOB#and during the press conference reigen finally realizes like. hes been doing all of this for mob. bc he cares abt mob#and he values mob's opinion above all else bc even under all his tricks he just wanted mob to think he was cool and important#bc he had never felt that before. and then when mob tells reigen hes a good person despite the lies and bullshit reigen REALIZES#THAT HES ALWAYS BEEN SOMEBODY. HE NEVER NEEDED FAME OR MONEY OR INFAMY OR ANYTHING#BC AS MUCH AS HE'S BEEN AFFECTED BY MOB. MOB HAS BEEN AFFECTED BY HIM#WHICH MEANS HE HAS IMPORTANCE AND HE'S MADE GREAT CHANGE AND IT DOESNT HAVE TO BE GLOBAL#IT CAN JUST BE THE CHANGE HE MAKES IN HIMSELF. AND TO SOMEONE ELSE.#AND THATS TRULY THE MOMENT I THINK LIKE. EVERYTHIGN CONNECTS#AND REIGEN REALIZES HE CANT LIVE HIS LIFE WITHOUT HIS LITTLE SIDEKICK AND HES SO PROUD AND#AUGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH REIGEN ARATAKA FATHER OF THE YEAR....#anyway. ahem. if i had to rank seasons from favorite to least favorite itd be: 2 1 3

did you guys know that i really, REALLY love both of the pilot episodes for mp100 seasons 1 and 2 because theyre fucking perfect. i'm gonna talk about them. shut up
S1E1:
literally the first thing you see is a distorted mob fighting evil spirits in a wasteland while his bgm plays. no dialogue, no context, no explanations; just batshit visuals and music to make sure you're awake for what's to come
introduces reigen in the funniest ways possible and immediately gets you familiar with his Vibe, yet leaves you with even more questions like "is this the main character? am i supposed to root for this asshole????"
whoops here comes a little boy! whoops he's extremely powerful! and doesn't that music sound familiar??
"THIS IS SHIGEO KAGEYAMA, ALSO KNOWN AS MOB- ... THE PROTAGONIST OF THIS STORY" incredible.
in contrast to All That we then see mob and reigen's ridiculous dynamic, followed by mob's daily life at school. whatever expectations you had about either of these characters 9 minutes ago were wrong (OR WERE THEY????)
now that you know the duo and their main characteristics a little better it's time to really watch them in action. the haunted tunnel does such a good job of showing what mob and reigen actually do at work, how they play off on each other's quirks, setting the tone for the overall supernatural plot, and of course the animation is just gorgeous too
ESTABLISHES THAT REIGEN ACTUALLY DOES LOOK OUT FOR MOB, AND WORRIES FOR HIS SAFETY, EVEN WHEN HE (REALISTICALLY) DOESN'T NEED TO. i can't stress how important this is to show from the beginning, i've seen so many people gloss over that detail and continue to act like he doesn't care about him?? wtf
ALSO ESTABLISHES MOB'S UNCONDITIONAL KINDNESS AND FORGIVENESS. very good
that final scene of mob just.. staring at a group of teens hanging out and talking together while he waits for reigen at the station, who then takes him out for ramen. it adds even more to the genuinity of their friendship, but also hints at mob's struggle to connect with others and figure out what to do in his spare time. all of that, that single episode is just like, the whole show. this is all you need to know
S2E1:
same old reigen with his same old schemes, but it's a nice detail that he didn't wamt to take money from the poor farmer guy and instead asked for a cut of his harvest (who said he doesn't even do fieldwork for a living anyway). reigen's refusal to accept unfair payment comes up a lot in this show and i think that's neat
same(?) old(?) mob goes "shishou for the love of god i have a life outside of this job yknow"
when the wriggle spirit captures reigen first and threatens to kill him if mob persists, mob actually lets his guard down. 1) he learned from last time 2) possibly foreshadowing how mob will be the one to save reigen in more ways than one this season
mob realizes that the spirit isn't directly possessing the plants, but rather sending out a signal that forces them to obey it, which is technically still a form of "control". COUGH minegishi COUGH COUGH toichiro
also mob basically learns plant magic! ~this action will have consequences~
🅱️ROCCOLI
lots of arcs that started in s1 are immediately continued! ichi and the psycho helmet cult, shinji stepping down from the student council, ritsu supporting his brother, etc. and just seeing how many friends mob has now that want him to succeed is amazing
the fact that mob even agrees to ichi's plan about the election and takes it so seriously is proof of how much more determined/confident he's become
mob gets asked out for the first time in his life, and even though it turns out he rejected emi, he's so cool about everything and still wants to hang out and get to know her - early s1 mob probably couldn't have handled it this well
"do you even have feelings, or your own opinions?" "i decided to consider my feelings more" THOSE ARE THE MAGIC WORDS FOR SEASON 2'S OVERALL THEMES AND PLOT BABEY!!!!
the floating paper scene. i don't even need to say anything just take it in
OHO? TSUBOMI? SCHEMING? LURKING? could this be the beginning of the rumored "character depth" i've heard so much about???
n e way. season 3 soon. explodes

I apologize in advance for the ask, but I want to know what you think of Mob Psycho characters as sync pairs units in Pokemon Masters.
Would you make Mob super support or a unit that can solo everything like SST Red? And what would be their partner Pokemon? You can use Paldea Pokemon if you want to.
What about Reigen, Ritsu, Teru, Dimple, Serizawa, and Shou? I like to think Teru has speed-oriented multipliers like Ramming Speed or Inertia, and Power Play on the grid because it suits him, he also can have Endurance+Unyielding. Shou has 4 bar attacks because his combat style is more of recharging and attacking with a huge blow.
I like to think Telepathy Club members all have Ultra Beasts as their partner Pokemon, because of their alien-related activities. Takenaka in particular I think might have Blacephalon, with Mind Blown and some Standfast on passive and grids (or make him something like Hugh just for fun).
What are your ideas? I would like to know what you think!
No need to apologize. I'll be honest, I've never really thought about this before so I'm going to try my best to wing it here.
Mob As much as support initially makes sense given his focus, I'm more inclined to say Tech with good support capabilities, terrible DPS, but explosive nuke. His emphasis is on helping others and avoiding using his powers to fight, but his whole thing is that he's also like...unquestionably the strongest. So I think that style of Tech nuke makes the most sense.
As for what he'd be partnered with, I'd say something Psychic-type makes the most sense. While I am obviously somewhat biased, I think Mesprit makes a ton of sense for him. Emotions are a huge component of his powers, and understanding them a major part of his arc. I think it'd be a really cute partnership, especially for like...after the series, you know?
Ritsu Ritsu's a bit tougher. I think as much as he wanted to be strong like Mob, Ritsu's much more support-aligned overall, given his ultimate role as the little brother Mob can tell anything to. I'd say maybe emphasize support, in a way that complements what Mob needs and make them kind of a set. I'm almost thinking he, Mob, and Teru would get all the Lake Trio, with Ritsu having Uxie as the super smart kid, and Teru having willpower. But that's (1) super biased, and (2) cheating. So as a backup...okay, I was scrolling the list of Psychic-types, saw Indeedee, and was like "that one because of the maid outfit," but I'll be serious about it. At first I wanted to say Bastiodon because of the protectiveness thing, but maybe Hisuian Arcanine because of the loyalty thing.
Reigen Reigen's decisively support, and I'm gonna say Kecleon. His playstyle would focus on broad defensive support, since that's like...a big thing with him. Kecleon works thematically because of the whole type change thing, which I think connects with Reigen's general tendency to blend in with the psychic crowd, and adaptability. Also, Mystery Dungeon nod.
Teru I consulted the wife about this one, and she said Ceruledge. It fits, I think. He's a little shit, but not a bad person, and Ceruledge is still a knight-themed Pokemon so there's at least an angle of protection there. I do like your ideas for playstyle, so definitely Tech with some debuffing focus and Power Play. Maybe emphasize offense debuffing? He does try to stop Ritsu going down the path he does in Season 1, and is focused on trying to stop Mob during the final arc. Endure with healing on Bitter Blade would be pretty great too.
Dimple So my first impulse was Rotom, as the only Ghost-type that actively possesses things, but that's objects not people. So then I was like Gholdengo because of God Dimple, but that's fairly superficial, if funny. But then I thought...maybe Banette. Curse doll that becomes your friend when you treat it well? That seems more character thematic. In any event, I think Tech, in the style of strong DPS and team-related buffs. Like how you have Masked Royal buffing speed for the team. That kinda thing. I think given his ability to kinda store up power, that he'd be able to do stacks of moves up next or supereffective up next. Also maybe a Hugh-like passive where he recovers HP after his first death. For reasons.
Serizawa Another I had to consult the wife on. She said something like Audino that's focused on healing, and that seems good. Though I'd like to push for Striker. I know that's a little bizarre but hear me out. Serizawa is the one in need of support, not necessarily providing it, and mega evolution that changes typing to Fairy feels like a thematically appropriate transition. Though I would also like to contribute, he gets an alt that has a pre-evolution that doesn't evolve, and it's Sobble. It is his baby and he loves his precious anxiety lizard.
Shou We agreed immediately that he'd be a Fire-type. I'm going to throw out Infernape, because I feel like it has the highest "I'm the main character" vibe. That was apparently a thing? His design was supposed to look like a standard shonen protagonist? Blast Burn is a thing. Pure striker. Probably has one of those trainer moves that caps offenses instantly.
Tome Okay, love the idea of Ultra Beasts, but also: Beheeyem. It's a literal alien. Designed off all the alien stereotypes. It feels perfect. 100% striker. I want it to Dynamax.
Body Improvement Club I can't remember all their names but they all get the super muscle Fighting types. Onigawara gets Pangoro 100%. Goda's support because he's such a bro, and my wife says Machamp which is fine. The blue-haired guy whose name I can't remember is Tech, because apparently he's #2 on tests in the school and is secretly super smart.

top 5 favorite anime?
ANON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THIS ASK IS EVERYTHING THANK YOU!!!! i am going to take this so seriously you will come to regret asking this. i can fit so much infodumping into this ask
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Tumblr media
Ok. This anime literally invented women. I cannot emphasize enough how superior the female characters in FMA:B are to any other female character ever. The worldbuilding is so cool (science magic is so dope ngl) and I love the parallels with real-world history! The character development is on another level and the buildup to the climax in the last arc of the series is so ingenious. I'd say it's the Game of Thrones of anime, but it puts Game of Thrones to shame any day of the week. It's one of the first anime I ever watched and I've been obsessed with it for 8 years straight. Absolutely changed my life.
2. Mob Psycho 100
Tumblr media
This show looks so fucking weird. It took me ages to watch it because every time I saw it trending on social media, I thought to myself, "what the fuck? Why does it look like that?" But it's good because of that. Literally everything about this anime is "why does it look like this?" Why doesn't Reigen have any powers when he’s the main character’s sage, wise life coach? Why does Mob want to be normal when he has psychic powers? Why isn't it like other anime? That's exactly the point and it's GREAT. There are so many important themes and messages in this series and it teaches a lot of life lessons. It's also one of those shows where everyone is your blorbo and you will be fed for years by the fandom. God bless.
3. Major
Tumblr media
Guys. Guys, guys, guys. This is, in my humble opinion, the greatest anime ever made. It would be #1 on my list if not for the fact that it's obscure as fuck and also a sports anime. Now I am not a sports anime fan by any stretch of the imagination (Haikyuu who? Kuroko no Basuke what?) but it is so much more than a simple sports anime, I just want to emphasize that right now. It's about baseball, yes, and all the characters do in fact play baseball, but there is so much drama and character development in this show it puts Your Lie in April to shame. You see, there's something very special about this show, and that is that it spans through the entire main character's childhood and adolescence from kindergarten age to adulthood. Progressing through each season was like watching my children grow up. The writing is superb, and I should add that the first five episodes are the best of the entire series and will guarantee that you binge all six seasons in record time. It sounds so corny, but I don't lie when I say that every single episode made me laugh and cry and scream and cheer. Additionally, I have never watched a single baseball game in my life--I picked this series up purely by chance because I saw the cover art of the sequel and decided to give it a try--but I have so many regrets about not playing softball in school now. Every episode is so exciting and thrilling and I'm on the edge of my seat the entire time with anticipation of the end result. Lastly, this is another one of those shows where every single character is my blorbo and I simply do not have a favorite because I love them all more than I can ever express. The sheer depth of emotional attachment I have to this series is truly unhealthy, 10/10 would recommend. Anyway, thank you for listening to my TED Talk and please watch Major. Your skin will be clear and your crops will flourish.
4. Death Note
Tumblr media
I don't even know where to begin here. This show is something else entirely. It's earned a reputation as that show that everyone and their mom is watching, and true enough, it is that show. The suspense in every episode was almost enough to kill me. The psychological warfare is real. It's so refreshing that, for once, I can watch a show where the main character is undeniably, irredeemably corrupt and evil. Give him a book of death and he says "fuck it," goes off-the-walls unhinged, and immediately throws his morals away to begin a career in serial killing and ascend to godhood. Don't even TRY to excuse what he does because it ruins the experience. Even better is the fact that the guy who's trying to enact justice on him is Even Worse. There's also a good helping of gay subtext thrown in if you're into that.
5. Shadows House
Tumblr media
Like Major, this anime is criminally underrated but it's relatively new, so I hope it will get more traction in the future. It has one of the most fresh and intriguing premises I've seen for a long time, with some really unique worldbuilding and lore that blew my mind. I'm not really a slice-of-life person, though I do enjoy mysteries, but this one drew me in from the very first episode and exceeded all my expectations for another average series. I love the character development and writing in this show, the character designs and animation are top-notch, and, again, there is a healthy dose of queer subtext for ALL of the characters (not even just the main characters). Another must-watch for anyone who wants to find that special media that they will become obsessed with on a toxic level and never recover from.

this summer, me and my brother watched four whole shows. at long last, here is my comprehensive review of all of them!
in the order we watched them, these shows were:
avatar the last airbender (ATLA)
mob psycho 100 (MP100)
demon slayer / kimetsu no yaiba (KNY)
fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood (FMAB)
they were all very very good!
i’m not going to try to rank them, but, as is probably obvious by the state of my blog, my favorite was FMAB :) if i had to pick a least favorite, then, it would probably be KNY—not by any fault of its own, but just because it didn’t appeal to me quite as much as the others. still a very good show!
i will review each show by:
giving a quick plot-based pitch discussing the show’s hook or appeal
discussing one element that i believe it does better than any other show on this list—in other words, a quality that i think it stands out for
discussing one element that didn’t appeal to me or that i had issues with—a criticism
putting forth my favorite character and favorite episode or arc, just for funsies
including various other commentary. mostly positive, as, again, i did really like all of these!
(i’ve tried to make this whole thing free of specific spoilers, but if you’re planning on watching any of these shows and want to go in more-or-less blind, it might be best not to read this.)
first of all, i’d just like to discuss all four of these shows as a whole! it was definitely interesting watching one after another and noting similarities between them.
all of them have siblings in them! which is, perhaps, fitting, as i watched them with my brother
two include a pair of siblings in which one has powers and one doesn’t (at least at first), and part of the narrative involves getting better at using those powers (ATLA, MP100)
two include a narrative centered around a pair of siblings and something tragic that happens to them, resulting in the older one being traumatized and forced to train to become a soldier, and the younger one turning into something (arguably) inhuman. the protagonist’s major goal is to return his younger sibling to the way they were before (KNY, FMAB)
ATLA and FMAB are both fantasy political dramas, which is rapidly becoming a favorite genre of mine
most of these are historical, or historically inspired in some way, which is interesting!
all of these shows are really really good at character building. all the main characters are interesting and complex, and the relationships between those characters are similarly nuanced and very well written. they make you really care about both the protagonists and the side characters!
Tumblr media
avatar: the last airbender
pitch: as the ever-growing imperial force of the fire nation threatens the earth and water nations, a kid from the long-lost air nation turns up and it turns out he can control all four elements and he has to save the world and all that. sorry i tried to write this pitch like five times and realized that well at this point i think everyone reading this will know the plot of avatar
stands out for: avatar has possibly the best worldbuilding i have ever seen in a show—it takes the time to introduce us to so many places and aspects of its world, both explicitly and subtly. the main highlight of this is the magic system. by creating a magic system based in body movement, the process of using magic and learning to use/control it better becomes immediately obvious to the viewer. combine that with the philosophy behind each type of bending and the way that characters take bending inspiration from types different than their own, and you’ve got a system that is complex, flexible, believable, internally consistent, and just plain fun! it makes action sequences a blast. i especially liked the moments when bending was stretched to its limits in totally logical ways (metalbending, bloodbending). not to mention the way that bending is seamlessly integrated into the world of avatar! the example that comes to mind is the earthbending-powered transport system of omashu. a whole essay could be written on that topic alone!
criticism: i know this is a sentiment shared by many people, but the first season was kind of boring to me. some of the humor and the plots felt hit-or-miss. of course, it needed to take that time to establish the world, and it does a great job of doing that. it just didn’t hook me until the second season.
favorite character: i love toph she’s so much fun :) iroh is a close second! and zuko is great, too, of course
favorite arc: i loved ba sing se a ton, especially the episode when they get there and everything feels off. it felt so resonant with real life, in a very fun way. there’s a reason “there is no war in ba sing se” is a meme…
other commentary: what can i say? it’s a classic for a damn good reason. the plot is tight, and it does a great job raising tension and introducing new elements and twists. i also love the care put into the antagonists, especially azula, who has a fascinating arc.
Tumblr media
mob psycho 100
pitch: a middle schooler and a charismatic con artist team up to smite ghosts using extrasensory powers. thing is, only the middle schooler actually has ESP, and it happens to be really, really powerful. can he navigate the difficult world of middle school while also getting a better grip on his powers—and his bottled-up emotions?
stands out for: the way that MP100 uses animation is excellent. it takes a little getting used to but it’s just so fun, combining all sorts of different techniques to create an experience rich with drama and emotion. it’s playfully exaggerated and self-parodying, adding to the show’s fantastic sense of humor as well as its truly emotional moments.
criticism: the way that ESP works makes suspension of disbelief tricky. it’s a great feat to introduce a character who is essentially all-powerful and still make them interesting (even in fight scenes), but at times (especially the second season finale) it felt like a magic system with too much breadth and too few limitations. this might just be my bias for hard magic systems talking, though.
favorite character: other than mob and reigen? probably teru. he’s loads of fun AND all the season 1 episodes he’s in slap hard
favorite episode: the one where the girl asks mob out on a date as a dare.. it’s super cute
other commentary: thank you mp100 for being the leftist propaganda we all deserve <3
in all seriousness though, this show is a blast!! it does a great job switching between silly and serious in the blink of an eye. i also really appreciate the way that it balances comically huge stakes with much smaller, more personal stories. for example, the conflict between mob and reigen in season 2 is especially well-done. in general the emotions just feel so real? characters whose emotions tie into their powers are an excellent trope, and mob is a wonderful protagonist who exemplifies this really well.
finally, on a more critical note—there are so many characters in this show! and it feels like only a handful are fleshed out? however, this may be due to the fact that it’s not an adaptation of the entire manga (which i haven’t read). there’s a lot more to go! more characters to dive into! so i probably shouldn’t try to critique it in the same way as a finished work.
Tumblr media
demon slayer / kimetsu no yaiba
pitch: demons kill a boy’s family and turn his sister into a demon, so he decides to try and figure out a way to turn his sister back into a human. what follows is a demon-killing adventure that’s in equal parts harrowing, poignant, and hilarious.
stands out for: there’s not much i can say about this other than “please just take a look” but the art and design is phenomenal. it does a much better job of integrating 2D and 3D than a lot of other animated series, and overall it is just so so pretty! all the character designs are complex, memorable, and fit the characters perfectly. the color choices are interesting and satisfying. i also really like the sound design? not often that i notice that in a show. i’ve watched so many KNY amvs by now lol it’s just amazing animation
criticism: the narration style leans too heavily towards tell instead of show. this is mostly an issue with the first few episodes, but i got super annoyed by how much the show would narrate every single one of tanjirou’s thoughts instead of letting us infer those thoughts through his actions and reactions—the latter, i think, would have been more emotionally impactful. sometimes silence speaks louder than words! tanjirou was also not the world’s most compelling protagonist in my opinion, though i think that mostly has to do with my own tastes.
favorite character: *holds up zenitsu* I Just Think He’s Neat. i actually kind of lost it when he first used his powers, like… damn i love characters with weird relationships with their magic like that. i also think the narrative about how having a solid foundation is sometimes more important than knowing a ton of different moves was really powerful. and he’s just funny! pathetic boy i love him
favorite arc: really just the whole spider arc. fucked up man… i love it. they pulled off that last twist so well, and all the family stuff was so weird and complex and emotional…
other commentary: it’s just a really solid and very well-written show! the team of tanjirou, zenitsu, and inosuke is so much fun… bro bonding :) i also quite like the horror elements; it’s fucked up but in a good way. finally, this is very specific, but the demon that can alter buildings/rooms through drumbeats? appealed to me very much. it’s a cool and unique power!
Tumblr media
fullmetal alchemist: brotherhood
pitch: two kids do some fucked up alchemy and end up getting parts of their body stolen by god. now they’re on a quest to get their bodies back, but find themselves wrapped up in crazy government conspiracies and alchemy more powerful than they ever could’ve imagined…
stands out for: plot. by this i mean less overall concept (though the overall concept is pretty great too), and more that the pacing and progression of the story is extraordinarily tight. for the most part (the first few episodes are a little weak but i’ll let it slide), it does an excellent job establishing its premise and building on it logically, adding layers and layers that extend naturally from what we already know. everything has a reason for happening; everything is revealed in good time and all the twists are super satisfying. there’s great balance between exciting moments and quiet moments. it’s just very good at being a story!
(fun fact: i’m reading the manga right now and so far it’s even better paced than the show, which is super interesting! it’s especially good at how it lays out pieces of the backstory and then fills everything in later in a really satisfying way.)
criticism: this is incredibly specific but it’s what comes to mind as something that bothered me: winry’s character arc was really disappointing. for most of the series she’s a pretty strong character, but in the end it feels like she gets pushed aside, defined only by her relationship with ed. what happened to her wanting to take action more? that was a specific desire she expressed—wanting to be less passive! since she’s such an important character, i wish she could have had more presence in the last season other than as a sounding board for the elric bros’ emotions. (even though her one scene in the last episode was really good and emotional…)
favorite character: other than the elric bros, absolutely ling. he fits into multiple of my favorite character archetypes (fun, silly, bastard, gets possessed…) and he’s just overall a delight. plus his relationship with greed is really really good. bro bonding at its peak!! (my other favorite is pride. i will not say why because spoilers. but if you know me.. you know)
favorite episode: this is really really hard to choose but i’m gonna go with envy’s death because. holy shit.
other commentary: i’m a really big fan of the complex and nuanced way in which FMAB breaks down militaristic, imperial regimes from the inside. many of the characters have done awful things, and the story forces them to grapple with that and accept that all they can do now is be better in the future. the moral complexity is just really good! characters with flaws—we love to see it!
finally, parts of this story seem so so catered to Me Specifically that it’s no wonder i got so into it. like just the entire premise? the way that so much of the conflict is built out of identity crisis and exploring the nature of consciousness and human vs inhuman? beautiful. i love ed and al so much
*
if you made it all the way to the end, thank you so much for reading!! glad to have finally gotten this done (3 months late…) and put all my thoughts down. i hope this inspires someone to try watching one of the shows i discussed!

ok last tag game, @kandraswithhats tagged me to talk about my 10 favorite characters so let’s get into it, in no particular order:
1) Zuko from Avatar: The Last Airbender (tv show and comics). are you kidding me like look at him. he is the original. the Standard. No one has ever come close to him before or since. the only man i will ever respect. the angst? the redemption arc? the awkward friendship? all he needed to say was “that’s rough buddy” and the whole world fell to its knees.
2) Mabel and Dipper from Gravity Falls (tv show). they’re a pair, do not separate... this isn’t just because it’s a running joke between my best friend and i that we’re literally them, but that does have a big part in it, haha. they’re just great kids from a great show, they feel like actual twelve year olds and have a lot of heart. through that whole show, absolutely nothing came between them — even at the end, when Bill was trying to separate them, they always found each other.
3) Mitsuko Souma from Battle Royale (book). GOD. I’m going to ignore lasplock for a minute, because — this book is probably the best thing I’ve ever read. It’s fun and entertaining while still giving an important message; not for the faint of heart, but full of heart despite it. Souma is one of the antagonists and does such a good job of instilling fear and dread into every page. She’s ruthless but not like Kiriyama is ruthless — while he just roams the island and slaughters everything in sight, she gets close to her victims and uses them against each other... she’s confident and smart and I think she would have won in the end if Takami didn’t decide that the novel should end on a hopeful note and that the guy villain should be the primary antagonist.
4) Mob from Mob Psycho 100 (manga). i also like reigen, and most of the rest of the cast, but Mob takes the cake for absolute best boy. he’s so firm in his convictions, and i admire him a lot for that, but he’s also dumb as shit bless his soul. he cares for the people close to him and shows it in his own way. precious. it’s honestly inspiring that he puts aside his natural abilities and decides to work hard to get what he cares about.
5) Buttercup from The Princess Bride (book and movie). i love how she never gives up on love and hope, even when it seems like it should be lost. she’s very strong — even when other people define her by just her beauty, she gives negative shits about what anyone else in the world thinks and continues to know her self-worth. she’s not just the maiden the heroes have to save from the wicked king.
6) Bilbo Baggins from The Hobbit (book). i recently read the hobbit for school, and absolutely fell in love with it. bilbo is so sneaky and sly and clever, and under that his character development into realizing that he is all of those things really hits home. i wrote a whole paper on it, yanno.
7) Basira from The Magnus Archives (podcast). no one tell me if anything bad happens, i’m still like mid-season 3. she’s so great, i love how she’s quietly firm with her ideals and takes absolutely no nonsense from anyone. she knows exactly what she wants to do, even if it might take some time for her to figure out what that is (relatable!!!!!!), and does it.
8) Calvin from Calvin & Hobbes (comic strip). the quintessential kid. a classic and a legend. his imagination is the stuff of legend. the snow monsters? kazam? the philosophical talks as they rocket around the woods in their wagon? aliens? dinosaurs? spaceman spiff? tracer bullet? stupendous man? no one else has even come close to the accuracy of childhood.
9) Hermione from Harry Potter (book). again — the original. the Standard. everyone wants the bookworm girl depth she has and no one gets even close. she kept that friend group together and we all know it. ron and harry were the drama llamas and she kept a level head for (mostly) the entire series. in the more domestic segments, her emotional depth and clarity balanced out her social awkwardness and gave her depth that carried through in the action scenes.
10) Keith from Voltron (tv show). yes the show was bad (rolls eyes) but my lad did nothing wrong and deserves way more than what he got. the same goes for all of the voltron characters actually, they got poorly treated by the screenwriters and they 👏 deserve 👏 better 👏
ok i’m done and i’m tagging just @bluecherryfanta (this is a revenge, and at the end you’re supposed to tag 10 ppl but i know zero people)

new mp100:
oh my god I can’t believe I’ve been craving......... slice of life. IT WAS SO GOOD THOUGH I feel like the establishment eps in s1 can’t really compare because double load of introducing concepts/working overtime to make the gags land, or I’ve just watched them too often, but here they can sit back and let the stupid, stupid character collisions roll.
I love every Mezato choice!! esp of course her bored dejection in the audience of psycho helmet cult ted talk, but also all her poorly- or not-disguised jitters throughout the episode---I thought it was a nice call forward to Tome’s behavior at the start of telepathy arc, actually. Teenage Girls Confront The Relentless March Of Time, Do Not Do Well
also the rooftop scene is really fucking cute, it was my favorite discovery from rereading this arc recently and on screen the 1-2 of Mob: (realistic and levelheaded) “she just wants to talk” to Mob: (VISIBLY DEFLATED B/C SHE JUST WANTS TO TALK) is. Ideal in every regard. Sorry, Dimple, your boy is getting brighter solely so he can be dumber in new, more average ways. we are all proud.
I love that the way Tome chooses to be a supportive friend is ruthlessly critiquing everyone else’s slightly less COMMITTED supportive friendship. Also for some reason body improvement club squats gave me the strongest Ace Attorney deja vu, which I only now realize is because the transparent divider made me think of the... detention center... and now I’m. stuck on it. “The toughest case Mob’s ever taken---legally, and emotionally. Body Improvement Club accused of murder”
The visual gag of Mob........ running in place at his desk .... through that entire scene... the different, problematic visual gag of Reigen loosening his tie and jUST holding eye contact with the camera for an extended beat. Anyway, I also love: Reigen: “Oh. He’s not fidgeting. Because I am a reformed mentor and now accept my student’s characterizations of his actions point-blank, even if those actions are ‘tap-dancing while seated’”
CONSULTATION OMAKE(!): Uh, I actually felt a little let down the first time I watched this (shut up), because I love the original omake with my whole heart but I think some of the jokes worked a bit better on the page, but on the other hand we got -- Teru’s solicitous “Hey, man” and -- Ritsu fucking eeling out from behind the desk to stare, so on review I feel I was a bit ungrateful, considering that this time last week I didn’t even think they would adapt it. Teru and I share an outfit coordination approach of “if you can’t make the whole thing hideously clashy, just adding on colorful sneakers is fine.” I reserve the right to miss “Reigen! Don’t say unnecessary things!” as a translation.
Also have slightly complicated feelings on Tsubomi’s heightened enigmatic intensity in this ep in general---I overall like it and think it’s smart in terms of leveraging her scattered manga flashes to give her a visible + consistent personality from day 1 (not day 1), even if thats just, “pretty weird and awkward, possibly the only child in the series with basic observational skills,” but it’s definitely replacing some of the charm of the manga ambiguity with a different, fun charm. Her shouting and then swallowing encouragement to Mob super jarred me, but it’s SUCH a bizarre “got caught up in the cogs of my own overthinking” moment that I’m hard-pressed to begrudge it. Tsubomi-Ritsu venn diagram: still good.
Ritsu checking on Mob before continuing with the race was really sweet... not the checking so much as the him realizing Mob was fine........ god I missed Ritsu’s insane compunctions about every part of life. Ritsu announcing “This makes me uneasy” to a beautiful sunset, alone, thinking back to a traumatic game of hide-and-seek: like an injection of vitamins to a dying man (I am the dying man)
Lukewarm on ???% choices here but I’m lukewarm about them in the manga too. I did love the wide-angle on Mob’s face when he sees the fire, and also his sad invulnerable trudge through the house, creepy just because so normal. First I thought it was a dumb place to cut off the episode, then I remembered what this season’s ED is. How does this measure up against Satoru running around in a burning building in Erased? They’re both fine.
HMM. FORGOT TO ADD. MOB AT SHOU AND RITSU’S WEDDING. HE’S THE BEST MAN. HE GOES UP TO MAKE A SPEECH. HE BREATHES ON THE MIKE AND STANDS IN SILENCE FOR TEN MINUTES
shou: you know what? i do feel sorry.

Meme: Reigen from Mob Psycho
sexuality headcanon: For now I’m in the Ace boat~
otp: N/A for now
brotp: Him and Moooooobbbbbbb god I love their relationship so much, it’s so good for both of them but as of season 2 ESPECIALLY for Reigen gaahhhh
notp: with mob so help me god
first headcanon that pops into my head: He would make a killing if he wrote a self-help book. Unfortunately, as we’ve seen before, his writing skills are not quite up to par
one way in which i relate to this character: I too am an adult with no idea what comes next but also a ridiculous need to protect children in my purview
thing that gives me secondhand embarrassment about this character: THE ENTIRE “REVEAL” ARC I WAS DYING OH MY GOD IT WAS SO REAL
cinnamon roll or problematic fave? PROBLEMATIC for sure
