21 - Quest

‘And then,’ Barda said simply, ‘we will go on.’

Lief slowly clipped the Belt around his waist once more. His heart was very full. He felt wonder and a kind of triumph when he thought of what had just passed. He felt excitement, eagerness and a thrill of fear at the thought of what was ahead.

But most of all he felt relief, and a deep, deep happiness.

The first gem had been found.

The quest to save Deltora had truly begun.

So, you finally found all seven magical gems and completed the belt, what now- or: Return to Del and the Breaking of Narrative Structure

I love Deltora Quest- this much should be clear by now. The twists and turns, the adventure and intrigue, the carefully crafted world that breathes life through its pages with each new block of world building added to the tower. The books are the perfect length to pack an entire thrilling story in without ever feeling like you got too much from it, or not enough.

Something interesting about Deltora Quest is the formulas it falls into- formulas author Emily Rodda has expertly designed to work in tandem with the story.

Let me give an example.

Deltora Quest- or at the least the original- is a series that deals in the number seven, primarily because of the driving factor that forces our characters into action- the seven gems that form the belt of Deltora. The rest of the sevens come naturally after that- each gem needs to come from a tribe and each tribe needs a territory, and then each gem needs an Ak-Baba to take it to its own dangerous location with its own dangerous guardian. Seven gems for seven guardians, if you will. So, it seems almost odd that the series itself is not seven books long.

(By now seven is ceasing to sound like a real word)

No, Deltora Quest the original is composed of eight books- the last being Return to Del. The eighth book in a series devoted to the number seven- it’s almost a little odd. Return to Del is an outlier among its predecessors, and not just because it feels like it shouldn’t fit in the maths- it should. The equation does work. It has to be here. There needs to be a book for what to do after you find all the gems. Otherwise you have to bloat out Valley of the Lost and these are meant to be short kids books. You have a structure- you have a pace. You shouldn’t detour from it.

But Return to Del stands out mainly because it is a breaking of the expected Deltora Quest narrative structure.

Let me lay it out. Here’s how each book goes. A gem needs to be found. The trio heads into a new dangerous territory to seek it out in its deadly location. They face many perils along the way but none more dangerous (arguably) than the guardian who waits for them at the end of their journey. They face them on- near death experiences ensure and then the gem is found. Nothing should come easy to the trio- this is a quest of life and death. And so they need to face a series of challenges before they reach the final one- and the final challenge should be the most deadly of them all. The differences come from the actual story told- what territory they’re in and what guardian they’re facing. The audience comes to know this format with each new book read. They expect it. And it’s good that it’s like this. The somewhat repetition works in the story.

And then Return to Del comes along, whacks them on the head and says ‘hey guys we’re doing something new now’ and by god does it also work.

Return to Del is a wild race of an adventure that guarantees you only one thing upon opening it- and that’s that Del will be returned to. Apart from that, everything is wholly unknown to a new reader. The expected narrative formula is broken and now readers have no way of knowing where the story is going to go. There’s no gem to find. No new dangerous location to explore. No horrifying guardian to either face head on or avoid entirely (Looking at you Glus). What are the trio going to do? Who are they going to meet? Will the Shadow Lord actually show up?

It is a fitting end to a series that wants to keep you on your toes. The formula must be broken in a new and exciting way so that each new twist in Return to Del will take you completely by surprise. You cannot, and you should not, get to know what is coming next. Rodda wants to take an audience who, by now, thinks they are familiar with how her stories work and show them that all they should expect is the unexpected. She is doing nothing by accident. This is all part of her perfectly crafted world, and part of that world means you don’t get to know how it’s going to end.

In other words, you finally found all seven magical gems and completed the belt, what now?

DQ Drinks!

I've been bartending professionally for a bit over a year (putting that Classical Civs degree to good use), and so I thought it would be fun to make up a cocktail as my annual single contribution to Roddacember. I ended up making two drinks--a cocktail and a mocktail. All of the ingredients should be easy to find, and the simple syrups are easy to make, although you may not be able to order them at a bar due to the flavours (which in a pinch could be replaced with regular simple syrup, which every bar should have). If you make/order the alcoholic cocktail, I must do my bartender duty and ask that you are the legal age to drink where you live, and that you consume it responsibly! Alright, let's go!

I went with whiskey as the base liquor for the cocktail because it is Canadian winter right now and whiskey on a cold day is delicious.

Simple syrup, if you want to make it at home, is as easy to make as it sounds. 1 part water and 1 part sugar, stir on low heat until the sugar dissolves, and then let it chill. For the cinnamon syrup used below, just put a few sticks into your pot. I'm calling the cocktail The Withick Mire because that's my DQ blog url and because I tried to think of a strong, fantasy-type drink that you could see Resistance members drinking.

The Withick Mire

2 1/2 ounces Irish whiskey (I used Tullamore Dew)

0.75 ounce cinnamon simple syrup.

0.5 ounce of lemon juice

5 dashes of bitters

Stir in a rocks glass with ice and serve. For best results, drink in a garbage dump.

For those who don't drink alcohol I have also made a mocktail. I wanted to make something pretty that you could order at whatever fancy bars Tora surely has. I didn't actually make the cherry simple syrup, my boss makes it at home, but I believe his recipe is a simple syrup base that he blends maraschino cherries into. I personally don't love super sweet drinks, but the cranberry juice cuts the sweetness of the syrup and ginger ale really nicely!

Toran Fizz

4 ounces cranberry juice

1.5 ounces cherry simple syrup

Shake hard with a few ice cubes and strain into a chilled coupe glass

Float with ginger ale until the glass is full.

Best sipped in a marble city.

Roddacember Day1:Awe

I talk about Deltora in this text,bot Deltora, Dorne or Shadowlands - it could be anywhere. There I will find things that are not around me. There is a powerful nature, full of magic and wonder.

In my current mood, I'd like to go somewhere wide open and refreshing.

I would like to spend some time in a daze, feeling the breeze blowing across the fresh plains.

I might smell a soft sniff out of nowhere and catch sight of a strange three-legged creature grazing close by.But when I look up and see the jagged grey mountains blocking the northern horizon, I might get a little nervous.

Painted Plains is also good. I might fall asleep whilst poking around a bonfire, lying on my back, gazing at the night sky and sucking on the bones of a Pig Rat.

It is all an illusion, a fantasy.

But when I smell it, when I see someone's back, when I look around, I can feel what is not there.

When I drink the sweet, cold water, I am sure that this evening I will be able to become a soul and go to see the people I want to see.

Touching the cold amethyst, I gently calm my heart.

I see people busily working in the harbour, with the smell of the tide in the air, and I wonder where on earth they are going from our city.

You and I have been to that world. It is the home of our hearts.

I saw a sailing ship this year for the first time in my life! Seeing this, I began to imagine what a sailing ship in Deltora might look like.

日本語版「デルトラ・クエスト」20周年記念イベントアンケート

　12月の風物詩ともなりつつあるRoddacemberも始まり、いよいよ年の瀬が近づいてきていますが……来年2022年は、「デルトラ・クエスト」日本上陸から20周年です！！

　このアニバーサリーを機会に、デルトラファン同士で集って作品を楽しみ、節目の年をより盛り上げていくためのイベントを現在計画しています📢

 　そこで少し気が早いですが来年に向け、イベントの内容についてのアンケートをお願いすることにしました。 

　ここでは、アンケートについてもう少し詳しくご説明したり、今の時点で思っていることを書いたりしていこうと思います。

イベント内容

　イベントとして何をやるのか？はまだまだ曖昧な段階なのですが、私が今考えているのはこのような内容です。

TwitterやTumblrなどでタグをつけるor特設サイトを設け、メッセージやデルトラ・クエストにまつわる思い出などを投稿してもらう

↑に加え、メッセージよりも長い文章やイラスト、創作小説などを書いてくださる人がいれば、特設サイト等に掲示

本を一緒に読み返し、感想や好きなくだり、気になる点、考察などを話す。やり方は未定。

　 この3つは今のところこんな感じかな？というもので、まだ何も決まっていません。 ほかに思いついたり、意見をもらったりして増やす可能性もありますし、この中からはやらないかもしれません。いずれにしても、 何をどうしようかはまだ白紙に近いことと、私もこういったことをやった経験があるわけではないので、より楽しめるようなものにするためにもいろんなアイデアが頂けると良いなあと思っています。

日程について

　日程については、9月上旬が第一候補です。

　1巻『沈黙の森』&2巻『嘆きの湖』が発売された9月17日からが、本当の20年目に入ることになるので、複数の人と予定を合わせてお祝いをやるなら、この日は外せないのではないかと思っています。

　カレンダーを見てみると、2022年はちょうど9月17日が土曜日で、18日の日曜日を挟んで19日月曜日が祝日と三連休になっているので、予定を空けやすい人も多いのではないかと思います！

　しかし、ちょっと先のことなのでまだ予定がはっきりしない人も多いと思いますし、土日や祝日にはまとまった時間をとれない人もいると思います。第二候補のゴールデンウィークやお盆、年末年始などほかの連休の方が良いという方もいるかもしれません。

　6月下旬に関しては、日本語版『最後の歌姫』の発売日が6月20日なので、『竜の夜』として行うのも面白いかなと思って挙げてみましたが、特にイベントがやりやすそうな日程ではないのと、日本上陸20周年とはあまり関係ないので、いつかやりたいこととして温めておくのがいいかなという気がしています。

　とにかく、9月にやるとしても参加できる、またはほかの日程の方が良いということがあれば、遠慮なく希望を教えてください。

期間について

　 イベント内容をどうするかによって全く変わってくると思うので、 今回は設問に加えていないのですが、イベントをやる期間についてもお話ししておこうと思います。

　一応、イベント内容の案として私が考えてみたことをやるとすると、1つ目のメッセージの投稿は短くても1日あればできますが、2つ目、3つ目についてはある程度のまとまった期間が必要になってくるかと思います。

　 今のところは、最短1日から最大1か月までと考えていますが、イラスト等の作品には事前準備の時間もかかりますし、あまりにも長く時間をかけすぎると、せっかくのお楽しみであっても疲れてきてしまうかもしれません。

　一方で、イベント期間が長い方が、より多くの人が参加しやすくなったり、やりたい企画を選んで自由に参加できるようになったりするかも……。

　この辺りはいつ何をやるか次第ではありますが、みなさんがイベントのために割ける時間との兼ね合いもあります。イベント内容や時期などの形ができたら、都度このTumblrやサイト上などでお知らせしてまいりますので、だいたい何日くらい参加できそうか予定を考えていてくださると嬉しいです。

任意項目と必須項目

　これらのほかにも、年代、利用しているSNSの有無、「デルトラ」を読んだ範囲についても質問を設けさせて頂きましたが、これらは任意項目で、回答しなくてもアンケートは送信できます。回答必須なのは、一番上の、イベントでやってみたいことの質問だけです。

　個人情報も含まれますので、答えるのにあまり気が進まないことは空欄にしてもらって全く構いません。もしお答え頂いたときは、イベントの形式を決���ていく上での参考のひとつにしたいなと思っております。

　今回のバナーは、本の表紙に書いてある題字の「デルトラ・クエスト」をまねて作ってみたんですが、どうでしょう？　クオリティがあれで伝わらない気がするけど、なんとなく2002年の香りがする見た目なので良いかな…。

　20年前にタイムスリップした気分で楽しめるものも良いですし、20年もの時間を経た今だからできることを楽しむのも良さそうですね。本当に開催できそうかもまだ分からないので、参加してくれる人、一緒にやりたいと思ってくれる人がいるといいな、と思いながら案を練っているところです。20年間愛され続けてきた「デルトラ・クエスト」の節目の年に立ち会えたら嬉しいですし、何よりそれをたくさんの同じ思いの人と共有出来たらもっと嬉しいです。どうぞよろしくお願いします😊

13. Judgement

“A king must judge, and must be judged.”

The King was dead, Lief’s friends said. And a good thing, too, Lief thought savagely, as again he hurried for home. The king deserved to die for the suffering he had brought to his people.

“You are a trickster and deceiver!” he cried, slipping his hands under his shirt, feeling the Belt’s fastenings. “No wonder you are doomed to guard this bridge until truth and lies are one!”

- The Lake of Tears

“Perhaps we do,” said Lief bitterly. “But at least our crime is only foolishness. You, however, are a liar. You pretend to be on the side of those who would resist the Shadow Lord, and all the time you help to feed his servants. You deal with Grey Guards as friends.”

“Beg?” Lief exclaimed, horrified.

Barda glanced at him, a grim smile tweaking the corner of his mouth. “There are times when pride must be put aside in a good cause,” he said.

“Do not speak to me of duty!” Lief shouted. “They are my parents!”

“They are my friends,” Barda said, still in that same expressionless voice. “My dear and only friends, Lief, since before you were born. I know what they would say to you if they could. They would tell you that our quest is their quest too. They would beg you not to abandon it.”

Lief stared at the scrawlings with hatred. Nak, Finn, and Milne, he thought, I will remember your names. You are not Ols or Grey Guards, Shadow Lord’s servants, bred for evil. You are free to choose how you act. And you have chosen to prey upon your own people. You have chosen to steal, destroy, and murder. I hope that, one day, I meet you. Then I will make you pay.

Even long afterwards, Lief did not know why he said what he did then. It was the impulse of the moment. Perhaps he felt the urge to give Doom some information, as a sign of trust. Or perhaps it was simply that he was tired of lies.

“We are going to the Valley of the Lost,” he said clearly.

“You did,” Lief said. “You should not have entered Tora. That was your vanity — and it was nearly your death, was it not?”

Or perhaps he did. Lief had changed. The old Lief, the Lief Jasmine knew, was brave, and eager for action. She was not sure that she liked the new Lief — the secretive, prudent, kingly one — at all.

Lief shuddered as a vision of Auris’s terrible death rose before his eyes. He glanced at the Piper with dislike, then looked away, repelled by his coldness.

And yet, he thought…for all his seemingly uncaring words, the Piper had entered the dome. Had put his own life at risk.

Duty? Lief’s fists clenched.

What had his life been over the past months, but a rigid devotion to duty? Had he not worked til his eyes were burning, hidden himself away from everything and everyone he loved? Had he not kept secrets, suffered being criticised, misunderstood — even hated — because the safety of his kingdom was his first responsibility, and enemies were everywhere?
