A Montreal resident who was captured in a viral video last fall showing him in handcuffs while trying to enter his own vehicle is suing the police for $125,000.

The online video showed part of the police intervention when the two arresting officers couldn't find the keys to the handcuffs so that they could release the innocent man, Brice Dossa.

Dossa, who is Black, filed a civil lawsuit in Superior Court on Tuesday, alleging the two arresting officers abused their authority, had no information to suggest Dossa's Honda CRV SUV was stolen or that he was not the owner, and that they "engaged in racial profiling."

"Based on Mr. Dossa's race and skin colour, they assumed that he was a thief, without doing any verification to confirm their intuition," reads part of the allegations in the document. [...]

In colonialist Canada, asking for a ceasefire and a halt to genocide is considered to be a hate crime, equal in severity to firing shots at an elementary school (happened earlier this week in Montréal). A ‘concerned populatce’/government apparatus that equates any criticism of federal foreign policy goals with real, violent threats to children obscures the reality of hatred and makes it more difficult to deal with appropriately. Not to mention the precedent now set that opposing government policy will be prosecuted on that flimsy of a pretense.

Investigating peace advocacy as hate crime is insane period full stop, it perpetuates the antisemitic conspiracy theories that Canadian Jewish residents are all inextricably and universally aligned with the government of Israel’s campaign of ethnic cleansing (which is far from universally supported within Israel), and it diverts resources away from—again—any actual hate crimes taking place.

3 aspects négatifs de la technologie sur la vie des jeunes

Dans les dernières années, l’environnement numérique a pris une place de plus en plus importante dans chacune de nos vies, notamment en raison des constantes innovations technologiques. Partout à travers le monde, ces technologies ont permis de faciliter notre travail ou encore de nous rapprocher malgré la distance. Toutefois, tout n’est pas rose pour autant. En effet, chez les jeunes, qui vivent constamment entourés par cette technologie, cette soi-disant bénédiction peut avoir de graves répercussions sur leurs vies. Ces répercussions comprennent, notamment la cyberintimidation, l’atteinte à la protection de la vie privée ainsi que la cyberdépendance.

La cyberintimidation : Le SPVM définit la cyberintimidation comme « le fait de harceler une personne ou de tenir à son endroit des propos menaçants, haineux, injurieux ou dégradants, qu’ils soient illustrés ou écrits. Elle concerne également le fait de harceler une personne » (SPVM, 2023). Elle peut se produire sur toutes les plateformes où il est possible de communiquer avec d’autres personnes. La cyberintimidation touche principalement les jeunes et elle peut gravement nuire à leur confiance en soi. Contrairement à l’intimidation, il est impossible pour la victime d’avoir droit à un répit puisque, même si elle reste à la maison, les menaces peuvent tout de même lui parvenir à toute heure du jour, et ce, de partout à travers la planète.

La protection de la vie privée : Les jeunes passent plus de temps que quiconque dans cet environnement virtuel. Ils utilisent les médias sociaux, les moteurs de recherche et les sites d’achat au quotidien. Ainsi, lorsque des géants du Web comme Facebook et Amazon vendent les informations de leurs utilisateurs, ce sont eux qui sont les plus touchés. En fonction de ces renseignements personnels, les entreprises utilisent des algorithmes afin d’afficher des publicités précises aux jeunes, ce qui permet d’influencer de manière néfaste leurs préférences, leurs habitudes et leurs comportements.

La cyberdépendance : Nous utilisons tous des outils numériques dans notre vie quotidienne. Toutefois, certaines personnes sont tout simplement incapables de limiter leur temps d’écran, allant même jusqu’à négliger leur vie dans le monde réel. Il s’agit d’un problème que l’on nomme « cyberdépendance ». Puisqu’Internet occupe une place centrale dans leur vie, la cyberdépendance touche principalement les jeunes, mais pas seulement. Cette dépendance peut causer des problèmes physiologiques, comme des maux de tête, des troubles du sommeil et des difficultés à s’alimenter correctement, mais également des problèmes psychologiques, comme des sauts d’humeur et de l’anxiété. De plus, le fait de privilégier cet environnement virtuel peut mener à des pertes d’emploi ou encore des difficultés à maintenir une bonne relation avec les autres, qu’il s’agisse de membres de la famille, d’amis ou de collègues de travail. En résumé, la cyberintimidation, la protection de la vie privée et la cyberdépendance sont des enjeux liés de près à l’environnement numérique qui peuvent avoir de graves répercussions chez les jeunes. Cependant, en outillant nos jeunes pour faire face à ces problèmes, il est possible de leur apprendre à bien naviguer dans cet univers numérique en constante évolution.

Two PhD students walking home after a night out in Montreal's west end decided to skirt around a police operation by stepping into the empty road.

Within minutes they found themselves slammed against a fence in what they say was a violent arrest — one with his arms twisted to the near breaking point and the other his legs spread so far apart that his pants tore and both his knees were injured.

"It was confusing because I didn't really understand what was going on," said Amaechi Okafor, a Black man from Nigeria who came to Montreal three years ago to pursue a doctorate in history at Concordia University.

Speaking during a Friday news conference organized by the Center for Research-Action on Race Relations (CRARR), Okafor's voice shook as he recounted what happened at around 3 a.m. on St-Jacques Street in Notre-Dame-de-Grâce (NDG) on July 22.

La couverture médiatique (notamment celle de La Presse) est mauvaise, elle ne dénonce ni ne mets en perspective les glissements et amalgames fallacieux qui font que cet affichage pourrait être qualifié de «crime haineux». Je cite l'article : « On considère que c'est un méfait, mais c'est la section des crimes haineux qui prend cette enquête en charge et qui déterminera si c'est de la haine ou non », explique Sabrina Gauthier, porte-parole du SPVM.» Rappelons au passage que la ville de Montréal comme l’Assemblée nationale du Québec ont adopté, il y a quelques années, une définition de l’anti-sémitisme comprenant toute critique envers l’Etat d’Israël.
