so with this weekend being the canadian gp, i'd like to take a moment and bring attention to the indigenous peoples who have suffered immensely at the hands of settler-colonizers on this land. (note that i'm only an ally, so if there are indigenous folks living in what's now considered montreal and/or quebec on f1blr, by all means please take the floor!)
canada is known for its cultural mosaic and for being the friendly country full of nice people who say aboot and use maple syrup with everything. our "origin story" is boring--conferences instead of a civil war? talk about a snoozefest in high school history. anyway, universal health care, moose, hockey, french, et cetera (/sarcasm). so it's understandable that people buy into the propaganda! even most canadians are proud of this image.
but beneath the surface, i think our propaganda is just as, if not more, insidious than that of the united states (our closest and most comparable neighbour). the truth is, canada is complicit in attempted genocide. around this time last year, the bodies of 215 indigenous children were unearthed from a residential school in BC. there are thousands of unmarked graves where residential schools were.
but this isn't history; this is now. the last residential school closed in 1997. the indian act of 1876 was last amended in 2002. and still, indigenous peoples in saskatoon are given "starlight tours" where police take them to the middle of nowhere to freeze to their deaths; our laws are such that indigenous peoples and their families cannot claim indian status and gain any benefits if they marry a non-indigenous person; reserves are without basic resources like access to potable water and nigh on unlivable; the rcmp have killed inuit sled dogs; funding to indigenous initiatives has repeatedly been denied by the government; and so, so much more that would take more than a text post on tumblr to convey the horrors of.
montreal, originally tiohtià:ke, is on unceded kanien’kehá:ka territory, which is part of the haudenosaunee nation. it's land under the hiawatha wampum belt and the dish with one spoon agreement, which together promote peace, unity, and responsibility to the land. the dish with one spoon in particular speaks to how we only have one dish--that's earth--and we should only take what we need, leaving resources for others while keeping the earth clean.
as far as being actionable, i can't give a definitive, be-all end-all list of things you can do. but if you're going to the grand prix, i at least recommend trying out the following:
PICK UP AFTER YOURSELF. honour the agreement! we're usually pretty good at about recycling and sorting garbage, and though i've never been to the circuit, i would honestly be surprised if there weren't green bins and paper and plastic recycling along with regular garbage bins. (nb if ur gonna try canadian things: tim hortons coffee cups are NOT recyclable, but their ice capp/frozen drink cups are!)
educate yourself! i'll link a couple sites below where you can get started, but for an introduction, i cannot recommend chelsea vowel's indigenous writes enough. it's a fantastically written guide to first nations, métis, and inuit issues in canada, and it's fairly recent too!
start following indigenous activism!!! for starters and to learn a little bit of the history, you can read up on the idle no more movement.
if you have questions or want to know more, i've got some pdfs and other recommended reading, but really you can learn a lot by going down rabbit holes. again, if someone who is actually indigenous wants to speak on this, i will gladly step aside!

Erik Lankin Shares Second Single + Video from Upcoming Debut Album, Tragic and Melodic Neoclassical Piece, “Feathers and Wax”
Tumblr media
Erik Lankin of Montreal (Tiohtià:ke) is revealing the second classical composition taken from his forthcoming debut album, The Icarus Album, a reinterpretation of the myth of Daedalus which Lankin has used to grapple with the death of his father, who he lost to suicide.
In both the original myth and Lankin’s reinterpretation, Daedalus constructs the wings used in his failed lift off out of feathers and wax.
youtube
The composition “Feathers and Wax” unfurls with rich anagrammatic piano melodies and guiding strings, growing into tormented sound design which flows into the beginning of previously released first single, “Daedalus Requiem.”
“We had to choose between recording the track on a half million dollar Fazioli piano or my dad’s baby grand Yamaha which he left me when he died. In the end we made the sentimental choice,” Lankin explains.

Caminata sonora nocturna
Resiliencia, pasos a la media noche, tomando a la luna como guía de la A a la Z
Amanda Gutiérrez, in collaboration with Brujas and Colectiva Tribu
She’ s late/ A circus show
She's late - A Circus Show is a theatrical adventure with Nien Tzu Weng and Camille Lacelle-Wilsey also known as the Double Fantasy collective. The public is welcome to walk in and out the room of La Chapelle from 18.30 on wards until the pause at 20.00. It is a wonderful invitation  to visit the universe of Double Fantasy.
Tumblr media
Nien Tzu and Camille exhibit their performative structures, a colorful and imaginative world where they perform random actions in an exciting installation on the stage of La Chapelle. We, the audience witness their actions, we are having the freedom to have a chat with each other and we can even enjoy a drink, the atmosphere is chatty and intimate while the installation on stage is in a constant transformation. At 20.00 the ’official’  performance begins, we are invited to watch an experimental circus, in which the performers are linking the ideas of physical performance, exploring impossible tasks, leading us through a circus parcours that often leaves us in laughter! Nien Tzu Weng and Camille Lacelle-Wilsey become soft clowns: they are very welcoming and highly amusing, on top of that they guide us into the joy of experiencing moments of complete absurdity. A giant orange balloon is one of the circus acts that stands out. The performances are often vulnerable and at the same time hilarious. Another highlight is Nien Tzu climbing up while Camille has a duet with a water filled red balloon. If you like absurdity and surprise, you will love this experience!
Tumblr media
Camille Lacelle-Wilsey is a contemporary dance artist originally from Tiohtià:ke/Montreal and newly based in the Eastern Townships. After graduating from Concordia University with a BFA in contemporary dance, she continued her choreographic research, focusing on interference, transformation and sudden change of state. Nien Tzu Weng is a Taiwanese-Canadian interdisciplinary dance artist and lighting designer based in Tio'tia:ke-Montreal. She aims to build bridges between disciplines, pursuing an experimental approach to contemporary performance, and a laboratory based approach to lighting design. As both choreographer and lighting designer, Weng is curious about the relationship between movement and new media practices, and plays with the balance between reality and fantasy.

Organizing for Just Urbanism in Montreal
Hello world! I've been living in Montreal for three years now and am hoping to get properly engaged in encouraging urbanism in the city that is also just and accessible. I'd like to make space for similarly interested Montrealers to join in on urbanist advocacy that is rooted in disability justice and other social justice movements.
About me: I'm disabled and have found it basically impossible to use my manual wheelchair in my neighbourhood (the Plateau) because of the poor state of the sidewalks and bike lanes (so many cracks and potholes, etc) and the lack of accessible transit (especially the Metro stations!). As a result, mostly I bike places with my recumbent bicycle, or use different mobility aids (cane, crutches) to walk around my neighbourhood.
I'm an anglophone with decent French comprehension but have found it really hard to figure out the world of municipal activism in the city. So I'd like to document my experiences and the things I'm learning so that other anglophones can join in.
Another disconnect I've felt in Montreal is how Facebook-centric the activism is. There are some lovely and thriving groups on Facebook, like Transport mésadapté and Montreal Mutual Aid, but I for one can't stand Facebook. Hence: trying to make alternatives!
What about you: what do you want to see in Montreal's urban landscape? What do you want for community activism?
