Saijaku Muhai no Bahamut 8
Author: Senri Akatsuki
Illustrator: Ayumu Kasuga
Label: GA Bunko
Release Date: 14 January 2016
My Score: 3/5
It’s time for the Culture Festival in this volume as Seles becomes conscious of her feelings towards Lux after hearing about Krulcifer’s confession last volume. Also, she finds herself in a conflict with Rose, a member of the Seven Holy Dragon Knights. Meanwhile, it’s revealed that the world is approaching an catastrophe and will soon be destroyed if nothing is done to stop it.
This is very much a typical Bahamut volume in that the best thing about it was how exciting the fight scenes were. Seles was also charming and I think fans of her will be happy with this volume. I was particularly fond of that one moment in the epilogue. The reasons why I won’t rate this higher than a 3 is partially because the villains were bad. This is a recurring problem with the series where the villains tend to be just repulsive without any memorable or interesting qualities to them. Also, the ecchi scenes this time around were ridiculous to the point of taking away from the story. Like, there’s a part where Lux and Seles are being held captive and it goes ecchi fast when they try to escape so there’s absolutely no tension in the scene. There were a couple of other times where I really noticed that male gaze more than I usually would when Lux would take notice of the girls’ bodies in a way that felt gross. I’m pretty desensitized to this sort of thing so I’m not sure why it bothered me here. Plus, and this is a nitpick, there’s a scene where the girls + Lux get dressed up for a popularity contest and we’re given descriptions of what they all wear but for some reason we only get an illustration of Lux in a maid outfit. I’m sure that Kasuga was busy and probably wasn’t paid enough but I just feel like I was robbed of seeing Krulcifer cross-dressing.
Next time should be Phi’s turn so I’ll be reading it soon.
