365 Day Movie Challenge (2019) - #63: Eastern Promises (2007) - dir. David Cronenberg
David Cronenberg’s crime thriller Eastern Promises runs like clockwork, fueled by excellent performances and striking all its narrative targets like the hitman at the center of its story. Penned by Steven Knight, who has also written and/or directed such films as Dirty Pretty Things, Locke and Serenity, as well as creating the British TV shows “Peaky Blinders” and “Taboo,” his collaboration with Cronenberg is proof that even a gritty tale filled with disturbing violence can also contain moments of warmth and tenderness.
The action opens with a gory murder in a London barbershop, leading right into the seemingly disconnected scene of a pregnant girl’s (Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse) collapse in a pharmacy after her water has broken. The baby is saved by a hospital’s midwife, Anna Ivanovna (Naomi Watts), although the young mother dies during childbirth. Anna learns that the girl’s name was Tatiana, thanks to the diary that was on her person when she was brought to the maternity ward, and although Anna is not fluent in Russian, she is able to bring the book to her ornery, ex-KGB uncle, Stepan (award-winning Polish director Jerzy Skolimowski), to provide translations.
Intent on solving the question of Tatiana’s identity in order to give her baby, Christine, a home, Anna uses her first clue from the diary - a card bearing the name of a Russian restaurant - to investigate further. This amateur detective work results in Anna meeting the restaurant’s gracious owner, Semyon (Armin Mueller-Stahl), whom she does not realize is one of London’s most powerful figures in the Russian mob. Semyon’s impetuous son, Kirill (Vincent Cassel), tries to scare Anna off, but she finds a sympathetic ear in Kirill’s “chauffeur,” Nikolai Luzhin (Viggo Mortensen).
As Stepan interprets Tatiana’s diary - recounted throughout the film with voiceovers by Tatiana Maslany - with help from Anna’s mother, Helen (Sinéad Cusack), Anna becomes aware of the horrifying truth behind Tatiana’s connection to the mob syndicate, as well as the extent of the dangers that Semyon and Kirill pose for her, her family and infant Christine. Soon, Nikolai faces the challenge of deciding who has his allegiance: an innocent woman with good intentions or the crime family to whom he has sworn his loyalty.
Viggo Mortensen deservedly received a Best Actor Oscar nomination for his complex portrayal of Nikolai, balancing the brutality of gangster life with his concern for those who are victimized by Semyon, Kirill and their associates, occasionally injecting his kindness with some much-appreciated levity. Eastern Promises is a film in which many characters have deadly secrets from both the past and the present, so half the viewing pleasure (sick as it may be - but hey, this is David Cronenberg we’re talking about) is in seeing how and why those clandestine histories unravel.

The Mammoth Evening | For a TV that speaks to teenagers
The Mammoth Evening | For a TV that speaks to teenagers
The Mammoth Eveningwhich will be broadcast on December 9 by Télé-Québec, is the Bye Bye teenagers for six years. As hosts, a dozen young artists enthusiastically took over from Pier-Luc Funk and Sarah-Jeanne Labrosse, who had been the faces of the show from the start. Four of them talk to us about diversity, youth and TV which can still bring people together.
