Volkswagen Golf Rallye A59, 1993. I have posted about it before but one of VW's more interesting concepts at this year's SEMA is also the oldest. The Mk 3 Golf Rallye (code named A59) was a prototype for a proposed WRC entry that rules at the time required 2,500 homologation specials of the participating rallycar. Two prototypes were built (only one is drivable) by Cadolzburg-based Schmidt Motorsport (SMS) but VW decided not to go forward with the WRC entry and the project was shelved. It was powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre 4-cylinder all-aluminium engine producing 271hp and driving all 4 wheels through a 6-speed manual gearbox and a motorsport-grade AWD system

i don’t want to be mean but there is a certain subsection of f1 fans on here that act eerily similar to the ‘not all men’ and ‘all lives matter’ intersection

hi, if you don't mind me asking, who was the 'certain driver' who had their ableism defended by their fans? sorry if there was a reason why you didn't name them before
Hi, it was Max Verstappen he used ableist language against Lance in 2020/2021? And also in 2017 against a US steward and then didn't apologise for it - said it wasn't his problem people were upset and then later on said he didn't mean to hurt anyone.
Tumblr media
The 'M' word is a derogatory word used against children with down syndrome in the Netherlands.
A lot of his fans defend him by saying he was young at the time and he said it in the heat of the moment (no other driver in f1 has ever used a slur in the heat of the moment - that suggests it's a part of his day to day life). Also, he said it twice he knew what he was saying and didn't stop himself from saying it multiple times.

While technically no longer a driver, James Hinchcliffe, known as Hinch, is still an integral part of the field. He remains friends with most of the drivers and serves as an informal liaison between them and the series, emailing drivers after each race asking for their concerns and forwarding them on to those in charge. Now in a broadcast role at NBC for Indycar and select IMSA races, Hinch does not rule out racing again, should the right opportunity arise. As of 2023, he has become a 'big F1 guy' commentating on select F1 races for F1TV
2019 ESPN Body Issue Controversy? Rumor has it that Arrow disapproved of James baring it all and this contributed to him being 'relieved of his duties.' James remained under contract for 2020, under which he was required to be with the team on race weekends and make sponsor appearances, but was free to pursue other opportunities. In 2020, Hinchcliffe joined NBC Sports as analyst for IndyCar races and select IMSA races when he did not enter as a driver. Read the ESPN article and view the pictures.
Hinch often referred to himself as the class clown of Indycar while he was a driver, bringing his slightly irreverent sense of humor out as often as he could. He’s a natural in front of a camera, entertaining fans throughout his whole career. He’s very intelligent and capable of explaining complex concepts in an easy to understand way. He’s got a sunny personality, is very personable and is almost always full of good humor and enthusiasm.

Ericsson to leave Ganassi for Andretti in new multi-year IndyCar deal | IndyCar
Indianapolis 500 winner Marcus Ericsson will leave Chip Ganassi Racing at the end of this year after four seasons in their IndyCar line-up and move to Andretti Autosport for 2024. Ericsson raced in Formula 1 from 2014 to ‘18, with a best finish of eighth, and in 2019 he moved to IndyCar with Schmidt Peterson Motorsports. He claimed one podium finish in his rookie season, then moved to Ganassi. During his 61-race spell with them Ericsson has won four races – including the 2022 Indy 500 – and taken five other podiums. At present he lies sixth in the standings, where he finished the previous two years. “I’m very happy and proud to be joining Andretti Autosport next season,” said Ericsson. “Andretti is one of the most legendary names in motorsports, so it is definitely a dream come true for me to join this team “It’s a very exciting new chapter in my career and I’m really looking forward to getting to work achieving our goals together. Exciting times are ahead and I’m thankful for this opportunity.” Andretti currently have four full-time cars competing in IndyCar, with two of those being co-entered by other teams. They will retain the four-car model for next year. Colton Herta’s car is entered under the Andretti Autosport with Curb-Agajanian banner and he is contracted to Andretti through to 2027. Kyle Kirkwood joined the team this year and has already been confirmed as staying there for 2024. Romain Grosjean is in the team’s third car and has indicated he will stay in IndyCar next year, although he is also down to race Lamborghini’s new hypercar as one of their factory drivers. Devlin DeFrancesco pilots the Andretti Steinbrenner Autosport entry and his contract expires at the end of this season. Andretti are looking to put a paid driver in that car, which for many years has been filled by drivers bringing money to the team. The announcement of Ericsson does not specify which of those two drivers he may be replacing, but does confirm he is on a multi-year deal. “Like everyone else, we have paid close attention to Marcus’ success in the IndyCar series and have been impressed with how quickly he proved that he belonged with the frontrunners in what is arguably the most competitive IndyCar field ever,” said team boss Michael Andretti. “It’s no secret that we want to win races and championships and to do that we need drivers like Marcus who have that natural talent and determined drive. We are excited for the winning mindset that Marcus brings to the table and I’m eager to see what next season has in store for us.” Advert | Become a RaceFans supporter and go ad-free IndyCar Browse all IndyCar articles via RaceFans - Independent Motorsport Coverage https://racefans.net/

Walter Röhrl & the Porsche 924 Carrera GTS Rally
On the 40th anniversary of the 1981 rally season, the Porsche Heritage and Museum department surprised the two-time World Champion Walter Röhrl with the newly restored 924 Carrera GTS from back then. Together with his co-driver Christian Geistdörfer, Röhrl achieved four overall victories in the gold-and-black 924 "Monnet" in the 1981 German Rally Championship. It was the first and only rally season that Walter Röhrl competed for Porsche.
Vehicle faults caused problems for the Porsche team in the first of 7 races, the Metz Rally in May 1981, but the performance was still good enough to finish in 2nd place in the overall standings. Röhrl & Geistdörfer were then victorious in the Hessen Rally, & 3 more wins followed in the Serengeti Safari Rally, Anterior Palatinate Rally & Baltic Rally. In 1982, the “test 924 GTS” was handed over to the Porsche museum. Recommissioning of the museum piece took place in the same location where the car was built 40 years ago: in the historic racing department in Weissach. The goal was to preserve the traces of time and the special stages on asphalt & gravel.
Most expensive production Porsche of all time
The basis of the rally car, the 924 Carrera GTS, was the most expensive car in the model range in 1981 with a price of 110,000 marks, a price tag that also made it the most expensive production Porsche of all time up to that point. With the Carrera models from the 924 series, Porsche proved that the transaxle concept could also be successful in motorsport. The 924 Turbo (Type 931) provided the basis for further development. The enhanced 924 Carrera GT (Type 937) with 210 PS was presented in June 1980 and was homologated for Group 4. Its more powerful development version was the 924 Carrera GTS (Type 939). The standard GTS delivered 240 PS and the Clubsport variant 275 PS, while the GTR designed exclusively for race track use achieved an output of 375 PS. The production runs remained small: between February and April, 50 left-hand-drive 924 Carrera GTS were built, all painted in the color Guards Red. Including all prototypes, a total of 59 cars were produced.
Test car No. 5
The 924 Carrera GTS Rally built on 12 December 1980 was also one of the pre-series vehicles, and was the fifth of nine prototypes built. The installed two-liter four-cylinder turbo engine was also a test unit: it was an engine without serial number that survived a complete rally season without damage in 1981, and still propels the black-and-gold 924 to outstanding performances in 2021. It has 10,371 kilometers on the clock today. The focus of recommissioning was ensuring complete originality down to the very last detail and also preserving the car’s patina. Even the slightly sun-faded red seat belt harnesses under the large glass dome are still the originals. A large R is embroidered on the harness on the driver side, and the combination CG on the passenger side: Röhrl and Christian Geistdörfer.
The patina must be preserved
Apart from wearing parts, a number of chassis components and the fuel supply system, the existing components were overhauled, rebuilt and installed again without exception during the recommissioning process – from the original 911 Turbo brake calipers through to the charge-air cooler with hand-welded housing. An endoscopic examination of the engine and connected KKK 26 turbocharger did not produce any findings, while the gearbox was dismantled and checked for safety reasons, but showed hardly any signs of wear. What is more, the Porsche Museum workshop had a race clutch in stock to complete the drivetrain, and the supplier Pirelli also had a set of tires in the size 255/55 R15 with the tread from the time.
The car still bears the handwriting of those who built it. When carrying out the work, the Weissach specialists were able to call on the experience, know-how and complete vehicle documentation of a former colleague: Roland Kussmaul, test driver, engineer and a rally driver himself, had built the car within two months for the German Rally Championship in 1981, while Schmidt Motorsport from Nuremberg was responsible for service work during the race outings. The special features of the 924 in rally trim included the rear-axle links laminated in glass-fiber plastic as protection against stone damage, thick metal plates on the underbody as protection for the oil pan and gearbox, as well as the fuel distributor from the V8 engine in its big Type 928 relation, which ensured the fuel supply to the engine at high engine speeds. The dry sump for the oil supply was located at the rear and was filled through an opening next to the luggage compartment lock.
Maximum secrecy
“The biggest problem in recommissioning the car,” says Kuno Werner, head of the museum workshop, “was not the technology, but keeping it secret.” The plan was that the 924 Carrera GTS should turn up at the front door of the two-time World Rally Champion on his 74th birthday. “But Walter Röhrl knows so many people here that it was difficult to keep the project secret.” But the rally revival was completed successfully: Together with Roland Kussmaul, the team from the Porsche Heritage and Museum department surprised Walter Röhrl with the roadworthy “Monnet” Porsche. “It was a huge surprise for me. I stepped out of the car 40 years ago and haven’t sat in it again since. So I was astonished when Roland showed up all of a sudden in this car,” said a delighted Walter Röhrl. “This car opened the door to Porsche for me. That is why I feel a particularly close bond to it. For me, it’s a journey back in time. I immediately feel 40 years younger.”
Turbocharging was new 40 years ago. And also unaccustomed, as Röhrl remembers when driving on the roads of his usual route through the Bavarian Forest. “As a driver of cars with naturally aspirated engines, the characteristics of turbocharged engines drove you mad. The turbo lag was enormous. In order to drive out of bends quickly, you already had to accelerate again shortly before the bend and keep the engine speed high.” The newly formed Porsche team did not expect that they would really have any chance against the established competition in 1981. Just finishing was the primary objective. “But the car was fast right from the start. At the beginning we had around 250 PS, later also more – but the strengths of the 924 were its handling and traction, not the power. And everything kept working. That is typical for Porsche.” The surprise was a great success.

One Last #IndyCar Race for 2017 - Show notes
( head on over to FastCarsFastGirls to download our latest episode!)
Welcome to the Hotel California! You know, if they really wanted to test the drivers' ability to handle curves, make them drive Highway 1 up in Leggett - so many switch backs! Sonoma (1) has been the season ender for #IndyCar since 2015, and as it’s the season ender, it’s a double points race. For the 2017 season, those points mean everything. Currently the standing is so close; there are just three points between Josef Newgarden and Scott Dixon - that's basically two bad laps from Josef. In fact there is 68 points between first place and fifth place.
It's close - like really close. As always we placed our bets for this race, and the championship:
Abby picked Newgarden to win Sonoma (obviously), Pagenaud Top 5, and Dixon in Top 10, and finally Pigot will be first out. In the Championship she also has Newgarden to win, but second and third will either be Dixon/Pagenuad or Pagenaud/Dixon, fourth will be Power and fifth will be Castroneves.
Molly picked Will to win Sonoma. Newgarden in Top 5. Rossi Top 10. Hildebrand Out. As far as championship, it will be either Dixon or Newgarden, but cannot begin to choose between the two. Then Power will take 3rd, Pagenaud will take fourth and fifth will be Rossi.
This year the race also has an IndyLights driver stepping into an IndyCar for the first time (on the last race. . . okay I guess it’s a try-out). Even more surprising is that Zachary Claman DeMelo is stepping into a Rahal Letterman Lanigan racing (2) car, wasn’t Takuma Sato driving for RLL next season (3), what does this mean? He said it was hopefully a way to secure a seat with RLL for 2018, even Bobby Rahal said they thought it was a stepping stone for 2018...
Speaking of the Silly Season (because until everything shakes out when are we not), dear Alonso please come to IndyCar! People may think he’ll be like the second coming of Jesus and take all the good drivers to heaven (we’re practicing Catholics and Episcopalians we can make these jokes) – but he’ll bring a lot of F1 fans over to the series and that can only be good. More fans = more money = more sponsors = more teams and seats. It really goes without saying that the more teams and seats there are the more full time rides the series will have. It would be really exciting to see someone get bumped from the starting grid of the Indy 500, or it would at least add to our Qualification/Pole Day drinking games.
And I guess Schmidt Peterson Motosport has said that Wickens is on the "short list" of twenty-eight drivers to drive the Number 7...they keep using that word. I do not think it means what they think it means. Also – can they make the announcement that Hinch is staying. (A) the more we wait the more anxiety and (b) we went from vegetarians to vegan over the past few weeks and you cannot stress eat carrots.
It would also be really great for more women to get into racing, a continually theme from us. If you haven’t read Pippa Mann’s blog post about the scholarship she’s part of – you should (4). Also check on Fox Sports 20 awesome female racer list if you have a minute, bad ass ladies (5).
Thank you to Pippa Mann and Shea Holbrook for taking the #Driven2SaveLives campaign out to California. It’s amazing and Molly nearly ugly cried when she read about it. Support them, and if you want Molly’s family is participating in the Indiana Donor Network, you can support them too! Team Hilliker's Page

INDYCAR 101: Teams
In this part of INDYCAR 101 we’ll discuss the teams, from the powerhouses to the just barely starting out. Every driver has to have a team behind their back and a seat to race in.
A.J. FOYT ENTERPRISES
Founded by four-time Indy 500 winner A.J. Foyt, this team began racing in 1965. As a team, they have three Indy 500 wins, five series championships, and 43 race wins, 35 of those wins from A.J. Foyt himself. The current team president is Larry Foyt, A.J.’s son, who took over in 2015. Recently the team has suffered from lack of success and lack of funding. Their drivers this season are Charlie Kimball (full-time), Sebastian Bourdais, Tony Kanaan, and Dalton Kellett (all part-time).
ANDRETTI AUTOSPORT
One of the powerhouse teams, Andretti Autosport has been racing for 16 years under team owner Michael Andretti. They have four series championships, and five Indy 500 wins, with three of those coming in the last five years. The team has two ongoing partnerships, one with Harding Steinbrenner Autosport and the other with Marco Andretti and Curb-Agajanian. Their drivers this season are Ryan Hunter-Reay, Alexander Rossi, Zach Veach (all full-time), James Hinchcliffe (part-time), Conor Daly (Indy 500 only), Colton Herta (Harding Steinbrenner, full time), and Marco Andretti (Marco Andretti, full-time).
ARROW MCLAREN SP
This new team is a combined effort between Arrow Schmidt Peterson Motorsports and McLaren Racing. Schmidt Peterson Motorsports has seven wins and 28 podiums. The team was founded by Sam Schmidt after a testing accident that left him paralyzed and ended his racing career. McLaren Racing has fielded a car partnered with Andretti in the 2017 Indy 500 and failed to qualify for the 500 on their own in 2019. Their drivers are Oliver Askew (rookie, full-time) and Pato O’Ward (rookie, full-time). They have an honorary seat reserved for Robert Wickens.
CARLIN
The team has yet to win or score podiums in INDYCAR, but they have a legacy in racing series across the world. Half of the current INDYCAR field has at some point raced for Carlin. They began racing in INDYCAR in 2018 after success in Indy Lights. They have been plagued with technical issues in their INDYCAR career, but the improvements they made in the off-season seemed to pay off in testing at Sebring. Their drivers are Max Chilton (part-time), Conor Daly (part-time), and Felipe Nasr (part-time).
CHIP GANASSI RACING
The team was founded in 1990 by Chip Ganassi as a one-car team. They have 12 series championships (five of those by Scott Dixon) and over 100 wins. One of the powerhouse teams, they’ve at times fielded four or five cars full time. Their drivers are Scott Dixon, Marcus Ericsson, and Felix Rosenqvist (all full-time).
DALE COYNE RACING
Dale Coyne founded the team in 1984 and participated as an owner/driver in the INDYCAR series for seven seasons. His team focuses on coaching and teaching young drivers how to be successful in racing. The team has five wins in its long history. They have two partnerships this season, one with Vasser-Sullivan and the other with Team Goh. Their drivers are Santino Ferrucci (Vasser-Sullivan, full-time) and Alex Palou (Team Goh, full-time).
DRAGONSPEED
This team made their debut in 2019, with race starts at St. Petersburg, Barber, and the Indy 500. Prior to the revised INDYCAR schedule, the team planned to make six starts this season. Their driver is Ben Hanley (part-time).
DREYER & REINBOLD RACING
The team was founded in 1999 as a collaboration between Dennis Reinbold and Eric DeBord. For the last few seasons, the team has focused their efforts on building a successful Indy 500 entry. For 2020, the team plans to compete in more races. Their driver is Sage Karam (part-time).
ED CARPENTER RACING
Ed Carpenter founded the team in 2012 as an owner/driver and very quickly found success. After the 2013 season, Ed shifted his focus to oval races and hired Mike Conway to compete on the road and street courses. Since then, there has always been a second part-time driver at ECR to run road and street courses. The team has seven wins in its career. Their drivers this year are Ed Carpenter (ovals), Conor Daly (road/street courses), and Rinus VeeKay (full-time).
MEYER SHANK RACING
This is a new team that is competing in its first full INDYCAR season. Meyer Shank Racing first competed in INDYCAR in 2018, and they will complete full seasons in 2020 and 2021 as part of a technical alliance with Andretti Autosport. Their driver is Jack Harvey (full-time).
RAHAL LETTERMAN LANIGAN RACING
The team was founded in 1992 under a partnership between Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal and Carl Hogan. Since then, David Letterman and Michael Lanigan have been added as co-owners of the team. Their drivers this season are Graham Rahal, Takuma Sato (both full-time), and Spencer Pigot (part-time).
TEAM PENSKE
The dominant team, they are the most successful team in INDYCAR history. The team has 18 Indy 500 wins, 16 series championships, and 212 race wins. It was founded by Roger Penske, and started racing in the INDYCAR series in 1968. Roger Penske has stepped back from a leadership role in the team, instead choosing to focus on effectively running and making improvements to the INDYCAR series and the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. Their drivers are Josef Newgarden, Will Power, and Simon Pagenaud (all full-time).

Indy 500 Car Racing Fight
Hampson anticipates working with one of the world's most eminent drivers in Alonso as they plan for the 104th Indianapolis 500. We had truly moved toward 2020 being a structure year, a coordination year, yet obviously bringing someone of the height of Fernando Alonso in with the general mish-mash changes the dynamic of that, Hampson told NBCSports.com. Presently, The Indy 500 Live Stream desires will be higher. The consideration will unquestionably be more brilliant. Plainly, Fernando is a remarkable driver, so it is dependent upon us to convey a vehicle that is deserving of him. Hampson and Alonso never have cooperated as of recently, they never had spoken yet the two of them have great notorieties.
Indeed, that was probably the greatest piece of my choice, Alonso told NBCSports.com, alluding to Hampson. Everybody was disclosing to me that Craig Hampson was the man to work with, with so much experience, and having the effect in a considerable lot of the races and titles the most recent few decades in IndyCar. Clearly, that is appealing, to work with this sort of individual that have any kind of effect. You can gain so much from a driver perspective, also, from the group and the architects.
To work with Sam Schmidt, with Craig, with Gil de Ferran, there are characters there that they have all the involvement with the vehicle, and they have won many, numerous things there. I think all together and all pushing a similar way, we ought to be a significant decent group, a decent exertion. I'm sure that things will work.
As indicated by Hampson, the Bolt McLaren SP group is in a condition of touchy development. The group is now bigger than Bolt Schmidt Peterson was a year ago right now. There are more individuals from the McLaren Indy exertion from the group's command post in Woking, Surrey, Britain, being coordinated into the full-time NTT IndyCar Arrangement group in Indianapolis. Hampson works in a joint effort with Scratch Snyder, the group's chief of execution.
He has been in this group a long, long time and is path more brilliant than I am, Hampson joked. What I am really is the most seasoned designer on the staff. When there is an inquiry regarding, 'What did you complete 18 years prior?', I'm the person to inquire. I am here to race engineer the third vehicle and to help with Research and development. They as of now do extraordinary with Research and development, however I'm here to look long and hard at another eye on it and toll in with thoughts on the off chance that I have them.
Hampson is the essential channel between the group's Indianapolis staff and McLaren's activity in Woking (where he periodically will drive and conceivably showing up at a F1 race this mid year. Numerous on the McLaren IndyCar staff are coming legitimately from chipping away at the Recipe One group are as yet wrapping up the advancement of a 2020 vehicle that will make its presentation in about fourteen days.
They have an enormous measure of assets over yonder and a colossal measure of information working at an a lot more elevated level of hustling than a regular US IndyCar group would, Hampson said. Yet, then again, they truly don't have the foggiest idea about a mess about IndyCar hustling. At this moment, a great deal of it has been addressing questions and pointing the firehose at them with data clarifying why we get things done and how we get things done. He likewise is assuming a crucial job in adjusting his building skill between Bolt McLaren SP's young pair of full-time drivers. AUTO MOTOR SPORT INTERVIEW WITH CHARLES LECLERC: "DOING EVERYTHING TO CHANGE HIERARCHY AT FERRARI!"
Charles Leclerc, a Ferrari driver. How does that sound? Leclerc: "I like it. A dream has come true and I live it like I did in the first day." How big was the step from Sauber to Ferrari? Leclerc: "Not as big as from Formula 2 to Formula 1. But at Ferrari there are a lot more people, so a lot more resources.  Everything goes much faster. If you want to have something changed in the car, you get it done in a much shorter time. But you spend more time talking or working with the people in the team. When you are at the track and sit in the briefing, a lot of people at home in Maranello listen and want to talk to you, so that they can develop the car further." Is it sometimes too much information? Leclerc: "Not really. You just have to get used to it. Then you don't spend more time with it. It takes time until you know everyone and can separate important from less important. The depth and amount of analysis that takes place in the background is simply incredible. They try to understand everything, no matter in which area. The team helps me to set priorities. With more experience it will come by itself." Are they asking you more questions? Leclerc: "More detailed questions." Can the experience make you even faster, or is this determined solely by your talent? Leclerc: "To be fast, you need the talent first. But then work and experience determine your speed. Experience doesn't directly make you faster, but it opens your eyes to what you have to do to become faster. I'm still in the learning process in using the tools that make the car faster. Differential settings and things like that. At the highest level, little things make all the difference." Why does the Ferrari show such differences in performance? Leclerc: "We understood the problem in Australia. We made a mistake with the setup and just didn't put the car in the right window. The car was badly balanced. In Bahrain the balance was right, in China it was a bit less. We lost everywhere on Mercedes, but not much.  Baku was good again, we were better in qualifying than in the race. It's going in the right direction." Which is harder to understand:  The new car or the tyres? Leclerc: "You can't separate one from the other. That goes hand in hand. We have to understand the whole package." In the first three races the Ferrari was extremely strong on the straights and weak in the slow corners. Why? Leclerc: "That's something we need to understand. But I think we'll be strong everywhere if we just put the car in the right window. The upgrades we used in Baku has brought us one step closer to our target." Sebastian Vettel and you have different driving styles. How do you like your car best? Leclerc: "I can live with a little more oversteer. But generally these cars have a tendency to understeer. When I entered Formula 1 I was shocked at how much understeer you had on these cars. You could never drive them with the balance I preferred in Formula 2. Impossible. That's why last year it took me until the fourth race in Baku to understand that. Because the walls are so close on the city circuit, Sauber gave me a car that is stable in the rear.  That's when I realized that I had to adapt. That brought the change." Why does a Formula 1 car have to understeer? Does it have too much power? Leclerc: "I don't think the engine power makes the difference. It's the downforce. These cars have so much more downforce than in Formula 2, so that you also lose more downforce when you lose the car. That makes it difficult to capture the car. As a driver, you quickly lose confidence." Don't different driving styles make it difficult to develop the car? Leclerc: "No. We just demand a different balance from the car. It's a question of setup. We both still feel the same general problems of the car. That's why the development of the car doesn't suffer with our different driving styles." Three team orders in three races. Is the policy in the team clearly defined? Leclerc: "I don't think anything has changed. I have to show what I can do on the race track and then hopefully the situation will change at some point. Like every driver here, I want to be the fastest. So far I have understood every decision, even if it is sometimes difficult for a driver to accept it. I have a 4-time world champion next to me who is driving for Ferrari in his fifth year. I understand that there is a hierarchy at the moment, but I will do everything I can to change that." Wouldn't it be better to say: okay, the faster one can overtake, but if he can't drive away, he has to return to the original position? Leclerc: "I don't know. I haven't thought about that yet. The guys at the pit wall have a better overview of the race. That's why up to a certain point I'll do what is being asked of me." Last year you didn't have a chance to win in Sauber, now you do in Ferrari. Are you going for victories or do you always have the title in mind? Leclerc: "Both. If I see the chance to win, then I'll try to use it. Victory is what it's all about. But you have to be smart enough to get the maximum points if you can't win. It's a great art to get the maximum out of the hardest moments." How difficult was it for you not to win 2018? Leclerc: "At first I thought it would be hard.  But you quickly set yourself new goals.  You simply seek for the maximum possible result. And that's your personal victory." Do the young drivers like you, Norris, Russell or Albon already race in the same world as Vettel and Hamilton? Leclerc: "I have a hard time comparing ourselves to Lewis or Seb. We are another generation. I didn't drive against them as much as I did against the other colleagues you just mentioned. We grew up together and pushed each other forward."
How much has your life changed at Ferrari? Leclerc: "A little bit. Especially after the first podium. Formula 1 is a weird sport. As long as you don't stand on the podium, people don't know your face. They usually only see us with a helmet. Since Bahrain they can associate my name with a face.  Nevertheless, I am not completely surrounded by fans yet. When I'm in Monaco, I stay at home in my simulator most of the time."
Since the Bahrain GP you are a superstar.  Are you prepared for this role? Leclerc: "I don't see myself as a superstar. And when it comes to that, you can't be prepared. I don't know what to expect. It's nice when people see me like this already. If not, I will give everything on the track to be one someday." You swallowed the lost victory in Bahrain almost emotionless.  What really went on in your mind? Leclerc: "Just as calm. I know such things happen in motorsport. Sometimes a technical problem costs you victory, sometimes your own mistake. I get much more annoyed when I make the mistake. Just like in Baku. That was just stupid. I threw a possible pole position in the bin. That also cost me a chance to win on Sunday. The car had the potential to win. It was my fault that it didn't work."
