alright so ive been genuinely thinking about tails' safety while doing his machines in his workshop because as far as i remember is not something very touched upon??

considering that he started since he was 1) a little kid 2) being raised by sonic and all the recklessness that it implies 3) thinking about an immediate threat aka eggman. i think it's safe to say that as much of a little genius he is. he probably had a lot of accidents because that's just how experimentation and science work, you need to fail a thousand times to get half a thing right and maybe that half right thing might even be up to change in the future

so i just really think about how many times there could've been an explosion, a fire, something falling off or even as little as a very pointy thing scratching him. like he can get hurt badly at any given time

yea i know that's kinda the point sometimes, that is so impressive that such a young kid can make so many great things, but i still feel that it wouldn't be as neat if he hadn't failed so many times and he still was clever enough to pull it off in a faster and more efficient way than anyone could think of

so it might seem weird but the sonic boom show actually does this really well (im about to ramble about my favorite episode alright i swear im going somewhere with this and that eventually my long analysis of it as well as my least fav one will be separate posts nothing to do w this but i need to talk about it)

the episode is "everything you do i can do it worse-er" and is Very good since it's basically tails and sonic having a bet on if sonic is actually impossible to catch since eggman is constantly failing and tails says that there has to be a way so might as well have a competition about it because that's really the most siblings thing to do

im not gonna get as excited as i want but. in order to make a good payoff, tails has to slowly try over and over to catch sonic (also duh because if not the episode would be over), learning from every mistake in what works and what doesn't, this also becomes really interesting because he knows sonic very well and can easily think of clever bases for ideas that can be a decent trap

so #1 is the chili dog one,where is a really obvious one at first glance, with the cage in plain sight and an obvious bait, but sonic takes it, falls into the secret pit and tails celebrates before sonic just gets out in a spindash and turns the tables on tails to make him end up in the cage. there he learns sonic is strong and needs to be caught off guard

where sonic finds one in his house and catches it and gets thrown into a succession of traps that lead him to a bamboo cage. but sadly, the process is too slow compared to sonics time perception so he realizes midway through the trap what's happening and gets out. there he realizes he should be caught off guard, but that should stay, he doesn't need a time to breathe or he would lose the bet

im not gonna write any every trap but in the one with knuckles he realizes he has some extent of easiness to be manipulated into helping or comforting tails. with Amy he realizes, even in the middle of his frustration, that he can actually use natural environment to his advantage. and with sticks, even if brief, it shows the audience that ultimately, any trap that involves sonic being on the ground is bound to fail.

(go watch the silly episode if you HAVEN'T because is really entertaining and the animation is dope bc is season 2 and i don't wanna spoil it more it's literally just 10 minutes im sure u can watch it because is really just a well written episode imo)

so what does he do with all this information? he puts it in use in a logic way in the final act where he eventually catches sonic! sure, tails learns a lesson in the story and all but the amount of satisfaction the last trap gives away, after seeing him fail so much and yet being able to find the most clever way of solving situations, it really shows how much he deserves the title of kid genius. because even if he can make machines his intelligence doesn't end there-unlike arguably eggman's does most of the time- so it even works as a way to characterize his intelligence, as well as perseverance and commitment to projects and also how much of a threat he could've been if he was in the wrong side.

and even if in some not-as-good chapters he's just there to do the "joke" of smart people needing to say nonsensical "smart" words that not even the writers care to understand just to sound smart to little kids. i do not like that. if boom tails of all shows can be used for that good characterization im pretty sure the more main storylines should acknowledge it at least Once

so back to his safety measures ignoring that the boom series (oh god minipisi shut up about boom we get it you like the show) made a joke about how lacking they are with the CHAINSAW IN THE CEILING (im never getting over that btw). we really need to think about how much tails could have himself hurt in his workshop. nevermind getting hurt fighting badniks and such that could be an entire separate thing btw.

like mainly i think about how his hands are. like yeah my boy uses gloves 24/7 as much as the next guy but considering how much hurt he could be those are most definitely not even close to his first pair

just picture how it would be that tails constantly has to replace his gloves because something happens while working. even more because those gloves are more likely made out of fabric, not in any way proper for crafting anything safely.

like my boy must get himself scars all the time or have his hands all wrecked by small things that he has accumulated over time but doesn't want anyone to know so he hides them and cures them himself until they heal but the scars are always there. he doesn't want to be a burden to anyone, specially sonic, so he just pretends he can do the impossible with no repercussions

also i believe it made him act purposely with an elevated ego for a while to cover his mistakes and insecurities YES I AM TALKING ABOUT THE PAPERCLIP LINE IN LOST WORLD OH MAN I HATE THAT LINE AND JUST WANT SOME EXCUSE FOR IT TO BE IN CHARACTER

but of course sonic himself is not stupid and even if tails is competent at hiding it you can't tell me he wouldn't find out and get all wrecked up by the entire concept of his little bro getting hurt and then he confront him and get some cool angst about it.

you know ive been thinking about this all day it is destroying me slowly because literally anything even remotely close to hurt - confort regarding these two is free real state for me

i got a few couple little ideas and mental images that i am too lazy to describe but they mainly need me to actually sit and draw them and that would take time

unless i actually drew them before even writing all of this checkmate procrastination

tbh this is Mainly something that first came to mind because i myself constantly get hurt for no particular reason im just that much of a dummy who fails to properly take precautions for stuff so for any silly or not reason i get scars. so i really wanted an excuse to give tails scars and i was about to write this as a haha funny joke headcanon but then i realized while writing that there was actual material and ideas that can contribute to it and ended up making several headcanons and I'm considering to do a fic so, good for me getting my hands all hurt ig?

obviously none of the places have any real lore grounded place i just gave him the scars and burns n such that i got and one or two more that make a bit of sense if i follow the scar logic

Oho 👀 alright get ready for a LOT of rambling >:]

This au originally started out as an idea for a continuation of the Sonic Storybook games, where the story in this case is Lord of the Rings. The other games just kinda throw characters into their roles without a lot of thought, like how the Lady of the Lake, Lancelot and Galahad are all related whereas Amy, Shadow and Silver decidedly are not (canonically. I know ppl have headcanons but this isn't about that lol) so I basically did that too. For some of the characters I do have legitimate reasonings for, but a lot of them are a combination of "hey wouldn't this be really funny" or "what the hell can I do with this character" lmao

So without further ado, here is the list I have so far!

Sonic - Sam Tails - Frodo Chuck - Bilbo Big - Gandalf Mighty - Merry Ray - Pippin Knuckles - Boromir Amy - Gimli Blaze - Legolas Shadow - Aragorn Silver - Éowyn Rouge - Galadriel Eggman - Saruman Mephiles - Sauron Metal - Gollum

Putting all my reasonings below the cut bc uhh it's kinda long

Sonic and Tails as Sam and Frodo: This one was obvious to me and was what started this au in the first place. It's a sort of "both are both" situation, they both share the burden of the ring and some of the scenes in the movie that exclusively happen to Frodo happen to either Sonic or Tails (e.g. Tails is the one in boat yelling to Sonic that he's going to Mordor alone, but Sonic is the one to put on the ring and see Mephiles [Sauron]). This is also where I need to put the disclaimer that the relationships in this au are not the same as in lotr. I'm NOT shipping these two for the love of god. They're brothers.

Uncle Chuck as Bilbo: This just felt natural to me as Bilbo is Frodo's uncle. I honestly don't know a lot about Chuck canonically but here he raised Sonic and Tails and of course had some wild adventures when he was younger.

Big as Gandalf: Ok honestly! I thought of this before the "big naturals" joke hit me skjfhkdg. Big always turns up in games where you don't expect him, he's super chill and he would definitely be the type of character to turn out to actually be a sort of god. Instead of going around smoking his pipe, he goes around fishing. He definitely tried to fish in the lake below the walls of Moria lol

Mighty and Ray as Merry and Pippin: These two I had a bit of trouble with. I was originally going to make them Knuckles and Amy as I wanted the hobbits to be classic characters but eventually settled on Mighty and Ray instead, as they have a stronger sibling dynamic. It also fits will with the scene where the orcs take Merry and Pippin under the impression they're the hobbits with the ring, but in this case they're like "it's the small yellow one with the ring" and mistake Ray for Tails.

Knuckles as Boromir: This fell into place after I figured out Mighty and Ray - they're friends!! They spar together!! I also like the idea of Knuckles being the one to fall prey to the ring, as he really wants to use it for good, to save his people (but it doesn't work like that). Unfortunately this means he dies :') sorry Knux. I'm also thrown for who could be Faramir and Denethor. I'm sure there's some characters from the comics that could fit but I've never read archie so fhfkjghgfk

Amy as Gimli: Axe? No, big hammer. That was the extent of my thought process for her lmfao. I just think it would be cool for her to hit things

Blaze as Legolas: I originally had Legolas as Silver but figured no wait, I can get blazamy into this au! Legolas is also a prince, so Blaze being a princess fits perfectly with that. Instead of walking on top of the snow, she simply burns it out of her way

Shadow as Aragorn: This was just because they're both kinda edgy kgjhkdgjdf you know Shadow would brood in the corner with his drink. There are some difficulties raised with this - who is Isildur? (Doom???) Who raises him? Where does Maria fit into his story? I haven't sorted those out so if anyone else has ideas please lmk :'D

Silver as Éowyn: Originally Blaze, but I swapped them out. Again with the relatives, idk who Éomer and Théoden would be. Definitely a case of "where the fuck can I fit this character" aghkghkf up for changing if anyone has better ideas, but I do think it would be funny for him to slay the Witch-King (could he be Zavok perhaps. Lol.) Instead of the "I am no man!" "Oh noo the prophecy was about gender and not the race aughh *dies*" scene, it can be "oh noo the prophecy was about race and not the gender aughh *dies*". And also Silver is nonbinary so it was the gender too. Idk man

Rouge as Galadriel: Another one I had trouble with. Originally Elise, I decided to make her Rouge just bc I want to redraw the scene where she's tempted by the ring for a hot second lmao. Also I think it would be funny for Amy [Gimli] to be like damn she's kinda hot

Eggman as Saruman: This gives me the hysterics. Please think of the scene where Saruman keeps closing the doors on Gandalf, but it's Eggman and Big. Anyway it DOES fit though, he creates badniks instead of orcs and wants to be more powerful. Getting in way over his head trying to get on Mephiles [Sauron]'s side and ending up dying for it. Also might make Gríma be Orbot and Cubot lol

Mephiles as Sauron: It just fits. He's evil, he's a god etc. Not sure where this would place Iblis or Elise (or Solaris) though.

Metal as Gollum: This also gives me the hysterics but again... it works!!! I figure here that the ring sort of has a metal virus effect - you keep it on you for too long and you become more robotic. So he would have started out as a normal hedgehog but then got fucked up. (Also means that Chuck might be partially roboticised). It also fits in with Gollum kinda looking like a tiny orc, and the orcs in this are badniks so. Yea. I also want the Sam, Frodo and Gollum dynamic where Sonic is like I hate this guy. Awful. Let him die. And Tails is like noo he's ok... he could get better...

So YEAH there we go!!! A lot of things still need working and characters to sort out. I mentioned Zavok being the Witch-King, but maybe he could be the balrog. Fuck knows. I DO wanna draw stuff for this au but it would be... a lot of work. I'll get to it though!! It's a fun thing to have on the back burner.

sonia. So hunger for fan content about her, especially revolving around her status other than she likes the finer things in life and thinking highly of herself to a t, which is fine and dandy, but would like to seeing another angle and would like to hear your take on her.

ALRIGHT YOU GOT ME 👏👏

First of, I’m using my own Sonia redesign as reference to these headcannons.

-They’re not triplets. Sonia and Manic are twins while Sonic is younger for five years.

-Sonia was raised with her mother, Queen Aleena. She was incredibly strict with her, making her practice to late hours her ballet and literature classes, this to being the future Queen of their realm (which name I still have not decided hehe). Aleena was very disappointed in Manic for very stupid reasons, they got easily punished but it wasn’t better for her bc she had to be the perfect sister all the time.

With time, she started being a little bitter towards her mother, to the point she and Manic left the castle to go look for Sonic (who was w Uncle Chuck (that’s another story)). However the more they saw of the world,the more they were interested in having adventures, they never stopped looking for Sonic but it wasn’t their priority.

-They started a band, a little one but they enjoyed every moment of it.

-Sonia did get into fights from time to time and her fighting style was based of her ballet(inspired movements by Spider Gwen in spider verse).

-She can play the electrical piano but also guitar.

-She has a few tattoos hehe.

-She is hyper romantic and asexual.

-She has encounter various of Sonic’s friends through her travels; Mighty and Ray, for example. She never asked about him so she never knew.

-She and Manic live in the van, sometimes they fight each other. Manic has a few scars of Sonia’s scratches, Sonia too.

-She is not opposed to crime pfft

Her relationship with Sonic:

Once they do find Sonic, she isn’t instantly fond of him. She is glad they found him, sure. But she just doesn’t know how to be his sister. Sonic follows her from behind like a baby duck but VERY VERY subtly, is confused about it too bc he had grown used to calling both Knuckles and Tails his siblings.

Sonia and Knuckles have a confrontation about that actually.

uh i mean like sonic and tails (the prev tags) call each other brother, one of them raised the other in most things, its clearly their intended relationship by writers even if theyre not related by blood vs phoenix and maya who act like siblings by teasing eachother a lot while simultaneously caring for eachothers well-being, an easily read as siblings relationship but the writers probably didnt intend it vs ibuki and gundham dont talk at all in game its purely an aesthetic and funny hc to have bc theyre polar opposites yet exactly the same in many ways lol

how convenient, i was just daydreaming about them! okay, here:

JET:

he met Silver, his internet boyfriend best friend through an undertale instagram group chat and they make music together! it started as undertale fan music but they do original stuff too

he plays violin and loves it, but only a few people know since he's self conscious about playing (storm taught him bc he plays piano and cello, and jet gets in shit for not practicing dkskskdkdk)

he sings like vic fuentes... on purpose. but he makes fun of wave for her emo phase like a hypocrite xD

him and amy run a community theatre troupe because they're fucking nerds and also besties! his best role was probably connor murphy in their dear evan hansen performance, but he'd love to be in rocky horror as literally anyone

him and wave have a shared dream to start a rush cover band! storm doesn't play bass though, so they need a geddy (jet can sing for him though and is great at it! in my mind they have espio join and silver can cover the synth because espio can't play that lol)

STORM:

wants to be a nutritionist/personal coach full-time, but doesnt want to leave his siblings so even if jet tells him to, he won't go do it. instead, he just does all the babylon rogue culinary work, upkeeps their gym and sets goals for everyone, and promotes wellness :")

he wasn't raised with wave or jet initially! while their parents were more traditional to the babylonian upbringing and culture, his dad was super chill/casual with it and didn't bother with traditions, but they ultimately took wave and jet in after... events... and that's when they became siblingy!

he grew up in the prison island area (think new jersey i guess? same east coast vibes, idk i'm canadian but whatever the hell they have going on in the bronx with a splash of jersey shore)

he's REALLY into conducting (orchestra and concert band) and his muses are Hazo, Whitacre, and probably Holst and Mackey too. he's super serious about it, and if you mess with his scores he'll actually kill you! the one time he'll yell at wave or jet to shut the fuck up is if they whisper during performances

he likes wearing his feathers in a bun!!!

WAVE:

she had a strong emo phase (asking alexandria was her fave but also mcr, ptv, bmth, paramore msi, ghost town, y'know the drill) but is also a hugeeee rush fan because she's a percussionist who idolizes neil peart

she was a really good figure skater and could kill it in the olympics, but she stopped when she was younger for a lot of reasons (no one wanted to be her partner, the rogues travel a lot and she couldn't train all the time, body issues since she likes the weighroom but figure skaters have more lean muscle, etc...)

she's lonely, honestly. not really a headcanon ig but it's easy to be her friend, just listen attentively! and then she'll literally die for you

she basically adopted sonic as a younger brother, they're super close. she's like an older tails for him but also his own rouge i guess if you compare shadow and rouge's dynamic, but he also sets her free. for her birthday he got her a special wrench from soleanna and it completed her set (their tools are hard to come by but are of the best quality) and it's her most prized possesion!

she's a really good singer. REALLY good. but she doesn't sing much because ironically, she hates the attention!

This little fic idea wouldnt leave me alone and i cant write so here just........ picture this:

shadow going over to sonics house after a mission. hes feeling really tired and just wants to take his mind off of work related things so sonics house it is. when he walks in (sonic gave him a key which still makes him feel warm bc sonic trusts him enough to have access to his house) its to raised voices of bickering siblings. mildly concerned shadow makes his way to the kitchen where the (now yelling) voices are coming from and the sight that greets him stops him in his tracks. tails is standing on a chair, slightly above eye level to his brother who is leaning against the table wheezing with laughter, clearly trying to not fall over.

"Am i......interrupting something?"

Both boys turn to shadow, one face full of genuine frustration, the other scrunched up and snorting with amusement. Tails immediately tries to gain an ally.

"Shadow! Please please for the love of chaos talk some sense into sonic!!!!"

Shadow snorts and says "i hardly think thats possible. But whats going on?"

"He," tails says this and points at sonic which just causes the hedgehog to wheeze, "insists that water is not wet!!!!"

And shadow......does not know how to respond.

"Im sorry, what is happening here?"

The fox proceeds to tell shadow that somehow while doing dishes the two brothers got into an argument of whether or not water itself was wet.

"Which it clearly is," tails turns back to sonic, "because water is water you absolute dumb a-!!!"

"But its not though!!!" Sonic manages to cut him off with a frantic smile. "Something isnt wet until it gets water on it! And how can water be wet when it doesnt have water on it!!!"

Tails, who looked like he was about burst a blood vessel at this point, let out a choked angry noise and turned to shadow. "Shadow would you please??"

And shadow had to take a moment to step back and take inventory on his life because how in the world did he end up here?? How did he end up with an idiot for a boyfriend who liked to rile up his genius kid brother (who clearly considered shadow to be family or at least a friend if tails was turning to him for help)??? And what was his life really that they wanted his opinion on whether or not water was wet???

I was 12 when I first got into the series, so yes unfortunately I am riddled with shipping tendencies

My One Big One from when I was a child was Rouge/Shadow, and now that I am older, wiser and queerer, I’ve added Omega for the ultimate "young adult queer punks leaning on each other in an attempt to not die” OT3. I love Team Dark a heckton and I just feel like all their most heroic + sympathetic moments are brought out when they’re with each other, it’s way cute and the way their idiocy-mellowed-out-by-being-with-loved-ones-in-the-same-situation plays out is Peak Relatable

The secondary Big One from my lost youth is Knuckles/Shade, just because it’s so painfully wholesome and they’re so nice to each other. I like to think that even though Shade can’t legally be used in new games, she’s still around - she guards the Master Emerald when Knuckles is away. They don’t see each other that often because they trade off on guardian duty and being away on adventures of their own, but they’re still basically married and the time they do spend together is just, so much emotional support and deep talks and being there for each other until death do us part. They act like they’ve been married forever and it’s beautiful

A new one that I honestly love is Amy/Sticks?? Fighty girls who are very good friends despite their differences? Yes please??? Also I just like the idea of Amy continuing to grow out of all her previous toxic heteronormativity as she gets older, and one of the steps just happens to involve getting a girlfriend. Sticks seems to exist in the game-verse, based on her appearance in Sonic Runners, so clearly this is the ideal progression of things

Other ships I like also include Espio/Silver (honorable lawful boyfriends!!), Tikal/Blaze (selfless princess girlfriends who can’t make up their minds about how dead they are!!), Tails/Cream (wholesome pastel baby sidekicks should get married in the future bc? cute???? there’s no justification for this one, I just like imagining the local babies being 40 and happily married) and Sally/NiCOLE (CANON LESBIANS, DUDE)

Special mention also goes to Vector/Vanilla, which is? very cute? But tbh my prime motivation is to use it as a plot device to make Cream and Charmy adoptive siblings bc can you imagine how much havoc they could cause if they lived under the same roof

Vanilla: I raised my child to be good and kind and always consider the consequences of her actions

Vector: neat, I taught mine to steal from the government

Already answered this one, but another one I love is Battle’s sprite art!! it’s SO pretty and fluid and it just has a nice oomph to it

it makes the battles feel kinda really brutal, but aside from the fact that I dooooon’t want to hurt the favs, it does feel v empowering to finish a combo or smack someone out of the air or jump off a wall
