First Impression: Summer Time Rendering
Tumblr media
As Shinpei nods off, he dreams of his childhood friend Ushio. But this Ushio isn’t quite right. She’s glitchy, and tells Shinpei that she won’t be able to go with him before asking him to take care of her sister, Mio. Alas, it’s just a dream. Ushio is dead, having drowned while saving a young girl, and Shinpei is on his way to his island home for the funeral. But the melancholy and pain of loss aren’t all that await Shinpei on the island of Hitogashima after two years away. Other things are awry. And concerning. Strangers have come to the island. Ushio was found with ligature marks around her neck, indicating strangling. Mio is sighted outside of her home, looking upward at the house with a dazed look. The girl whom Ushio tried to save goes missing the day after the funeral, along with the rest of her family. And Mio explains that Ushio was being followed. Nezu, an old man, explains that the threat is not human but a shadow, a curse that may have returned after many years of absence.

Nearly nine months after it premiered in Japan, Summer Time Rendering finally hits our shores! And boy oh, does it land with a splash! In the 22-minute run time, the series goes from dreamy and ecchi to violent and terrifying, setting the stage for a big adaptation of one of the most popular horror series of recent years. I’ve read the first two volumes of the manga, and based on them, I’d been highly anticipating the anime: it is full of surprises. Episode one captures the opening of the original work well. In fact, I appreciate how concerned the animators seem to be to capture a certain tone. This series feels very much like a throwback. The animation is excellent but not in a 2023 way; it looks like it’s from 2010 or so based on the character designs, line work, and muted colors. Other facets establishing the atmosphere go back even further, evoking the feel of a horror anime work from the early 2000s. Like the original Higurashi, there’s lots of quiet and focus on intentional, stilted dialogue. It all adds up to an uneasiness that lasts the entire episode. This is purposeful but admittedly takes some getting used to. It’s also not quite as uneasy as it should be, though I can’t pinpoint quite why. Nevertheless, I was able to get into the appropriate frame of mind by connecting this series immediately to a beloved classic, Evangelion, which also makes use of silence but also sometimes fills it in with loud horror music or the constant chirping of cicadas. Summer, regret, nostalgia, curses, fright: all these ideas are established not only by the actual plot, but by the animation and sound. The care demonstrated in this adaptation through episode one has me optimistic for the series as a whole. I’ll continue forward with it. In fact, I can continue immediately right through to the end—the entire run is now available on Hulu. - @animepopheart

Summer Anime 2022
I don’t have too many this upcoming season :/
None of those are absolute for me. I’ll try them all and then decide if I want to continue or not. Hopefully I will.
Tensei Kenja no Isekai Life: Chiaki as MC in an isekai anime. I’ll try because of him. Not a huge fan of isekai (and as you know, I tend not to watch anime with too many female voices/characters, and in this one there are a lot, hence why I also wasn’t really able to sit down and watch videos of him with the other female cast members, promoting this anime... But, I’ll still try watching this. We’ll see how it goes...
Shoot! Goal to the Future: another MC Chiaki. Talked about it a bit here.
Fuuto Tantei: detectives, Hosoyan, Ucchi, OnoD, Makonyan. I believe I’ll like this.
Kami Kuzu☆Idol: looks funny from the PV, and the male cast is nice. Hopefully that will be enjoyable.
Kumichou Musume to Sewagakari: I just stumbled upon this one. Yakuza and babysitting?? Looks pretty cute from the PV, and the cast is great too! (Hosoyan, Junjun, Waccha, Maenu, Ishikai, Kamiyan...)
At least I still have Ao Ashi and Love All Play that continue into Summer.
Fall 22 is gonna be way better.

First Impressions: Shadows House season 2
I mean--it's still good. Here's my first impressions of Shadows House season 2!
Hello and welcome back to Otaku Thursday! You know, this season had a surprising amount of second seasons for shows. There were some seconds seasons from new stuff, there was some second seasons from really old stuff. Today, I’mma be talking about the former–a second season from an anime that came out only last year. The show that we’re talking about today is none other than Shadows House. So,…

First Impression: Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World
Tumblr media
Michio Kaga finds himself in a videogame-like world where he gets some powerful equipment, kills some bandits, and gathers the spoils. When a villager tries to steal some of said spoils for himself, he is caught and turned into a slave, and Michio watches as the village leader personally sells off said slave to a trader in a nearby town. Said slave trader then gives Michio a tantalizing offer: buy a female slave from her, who is willing to… do things with him at night. Sure, she costs a lot, but Michio has five days and zero moral qualms about this so…
Tumblr media
There’s plenty of bleeping and **** throughout the script as if the anime knows how socially inappropriate it is.
Okay, readers, there is something you have to know about this world. In this world, there are people who like some pretty perverse stuff. In normal everyday life, they mostly know better than to indulge in those desires, especially when said desires involve some socially problematic things like slavery. But in secret, they want to fantasize about that kind of stuff. And web novel authors, light novel publishers, and anime companies know the demand for that kind of stuff is out there, and so they make stuff like Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World for those people. This is important to know, because when seeing that garbage like this exists, which is so objectifying of women that it makes Shield Hero look progressive, it’s all too easy to think “why do companies allow trash like this to be made?” And the answer is that, like it or not, there is demand for it. And thus, the point of going through these first impressions is not to evaluate whether this is worth watching or not, because it’s pretty obvious this is absolutely not worth watching for any of this blog’s main readership. The point is to remind everyone that there is an audience for these kinds of shows, and that someone we might be trying to reach out to may be part of that audience. Oh, and the first two-thirds of the episode, before the slave talk starts, was painfully boring, so that doesn’t help.

For the record, Harem in the Labyrinth of Another World is streaming on Crunchyroll.

Anim...aybe?
It's been a while since I have taken even a passing interest in any new anime, only a random title here and there that I have enjoyed. This should be heir apparent by my activity on Tumblr alone - I've never posted a ton in any month's time to this url but it's also never been so long in between posts since I started back up here. Which means I am either bored with Tumblr, which is not at all true, I still thumb through my feed several times a day, or I am bored with modern anime.
BUT, in the strangest twist of fate I can remember in recent years, here we are at cruising altitude already into the summer season - that time of year where normally all the junk gets thrown out to fill up the airwaves to get a season of anything at all until fall when the good stuff happens. And yet here we are, and there are multiple anime I am really digging. They're mostly new seasons of older shows, but we just had a new season of Date a Live that I couldn't watch at all past the fourth episode, so I guess I am kind of shocked at how much fun I'm having. Cannot say I could have ever expected this for a summer season.
Utawarumono: Futari no Hakuro (Mask of Truth)
Tumblr media
I've never played any of the games, but I have really enjoyed this series from the start - it has a great balance of fun characters and exciting plot (although everything I have read says they really went away from the source material in False Faces/False Mask). I would love to know what the hell happened to Kuon's voice at the end of Ep4, where she basically turns into Ranmari Rindo out of nowhere. But even with that quandary fresh on the fingertips, I am really enjoying the new episodes so far and waiting to see when/if it comes out that Haku... well, no spoilers for those who haven't seen it at all, I guess.
2. Lycoris Recoil
Tumblr media
The crisp art and bubbly of this show somehow reminds me a ton of Takt Op Destiny, except that I was not bored out of my mind halfway through the second episode like I was with Takt Op Destiny. Kurumi is 100% stolen from somewhere that I can't place just yet, and if you didn't say 'that's totally Homura' the second that Takina picks up the m60 then you really owe it to yourself to go back and watch some better older anime. Still, neither has stopped this from being a boatload of fun. I think my favorite thing about Lyco Reco is how Chisato is both Yui Hirasawa and Golgo 13 at the same time. Feel good fun, and after this 3rd episode there is the potential there for a crazy good overall story arc if they take it in that direction. Guess we will have to see!
3. Classroom of the Elite II
Tumblr media
The days of the psychological anime are long past, and I will be the first to say that it's a freaking tragedy. I'm not going to put Classroom of the Elite next to Paprika or anything, but I did really like the first season because every one of these characters is a deviously manipulative, scheming a-hole. There really are no good guys, and I never did get a pulse on where a few of them landed morally at all. After Mahoutsukai no Yome, it was the closest thing to my kind of thing that 2017 had to offer. I was surprised to hear that 5yrs later there was a second season coming, but my interest definitely pulled me in. Am very interested to see where this season goes.
4. Overlord 4
Tumblr media
And, of course, the no-brainer. If I was only allowed to watch one show in 2022, I could have told you in December which it would be - I have been amped for this since it was announced at the end of last year. Overlord has been one of my favorite titles since it came out in 2015, back when everyone was busy calling it a SAO-knockoff, and back when I never expected Madhouse to make another season at all, let alone four. So excited for these new episodes!
