THERE WAS ONLY ONE CHAIR because presumably, the queen doesn't understand Eric's fascination & servants keep away out of respect for him. So, there's no use having chairs around since nobody hangs out with him here. The implication that he must've felt alone for years until, well, her. They're twin souls. I'm gonna sob in the corner real quick.

This should not be applauded, but that mofo knelt on the floor afternoon 'till evening so she can sit (or not, she might be sitting on a box here) on the only comfortable seat in his library. like a fucking gentleman.
A prince on his knees, literally and figuratively. gddamn it, disney.

🧜🏾‍♀️🌊❤️ something I love about after the lagoon scene is when Ariel and Eric are sneaking back into the castle late at night. She wears his hat (ADORABLE!! but she puts it on jaunted because she's not used to human hats which is the cutest) which is basically a gf wearing her boy's hoodie 💙 but their sneaking back home late at night and not getting caught is SUCH A YOUNG LOVE MOMENT THAT THEY EXPERIENCE TOGETHER. They've no doubt snuck out and back late when their parents told them not to separately, but this time it's with someone they like like ❤️ and their own shared little secret (with Grimsby haha) It's such a sort of high schooler, puppy love right of passage that was also so cute to see outside a modern day setting (late century people - they're just like us!). Being soaking wet was an extra point of hilarity because neither of them cared; falling in the lagoon was another shared, funny moment for them. AND they got to feel like non-royal, regular youths doing what others do which they both so desperately crave (again, they do it TOGETHER💙❤️) taking their shoes off to be extra quiet... Omg ... CLASSIC

CARRYING THEIR SHOES TO KEEP QUIET, THE MOST INNOCENT WALK OF SHAME, CLASSIC CREEPIN' DONT BE SUSPICIOUS look around the corner 🤣😊🥰

i just wanna talk about that shot towards the end of part of your world because yes the shot of animated ariel singing her heart out and reaching through a tiny crevice before she sinks to the bottom of her grotto is pretty popular, but i can't get over the fact that in the live action film, they chose to zoom out and show us ariel already on the ocean floor in the dark, the only light illuminating her shining down from up above, as if to represent that this is it, this is as close as she can get, no matter how far or how much she yearns and wants and burns, and it's just THIS is how you do a remake, you take something from the original and add to it to make it even better

This is by no means an original idea, but I keep thinking about how tragic a version of The Little Mermaid (2023), specifically, would be if it ended with Ariel unable to reunite as a human with Eric like in the original fairytale, along with some other aspects.
The live action nailed their relationship as two misunderstood people who find solace in each other's company: although their families finally comprehend that humans or mermaids aren't the enemy, I like to think for the first and only time, they'd found someone who truly understands them as individuals.
Of course, I wouldn't want Eric to not love Ariel at all like he does in the original fairytale. Instead, Ursula is defeated but the trident is somehow destroyed in the process, and Ariel is unable to become human again. They meet by the shore and remain in contact. They bring each other all sorts of trinkets. But while Ariel's lifespan remains 300 years, Eric ages more quickly than she does, and their hangouts become less frequent.
Eric eventually marries the princess from the neighboring kingdom for the sake of future prospects. However, on nights when the moon is full and the stars are out, he sits and stares at the ocean, waiting for her. When he's grown too old to see her without assistance, Ariel visits him one last time to say goodbye. Smiling, she takes his hand, and upon it, places "his little mermaid."
For years and years afterwards, people talk about the king with the faraway look in his eye, and they'll say he got it from her—the mermaid perched on the rock above the waves, gazing at the land where she'd sang to him, a century ago.

Incoherent thoughts as and when they come to me (tlm spoilers ahead):
- We need to protect Eric at all costs, somebody give that boy a hug
- Massive fan of this Grimsby Eric probably wishes he’d been adopted by him instead
- Ariel chomping down on everything that’s handed to her is so funny to me
- Ursula’s lair is sick
- Eric guessing Ariel’s name was so cute and so stupid I loved it
- The fact that they basically paused the movie so that Eric could vent in the form of a ballad was so necessary (boy has a lot of feelings)
- The one thing I wish they’d kept was the dynamic of having Ariel and Eric save each other in turn, rather than Ariel being the one to defeat Ursula but I’m not mad about it
- “SHAAHT UP” *yeet*
- It took Eric a whole night to get back to the beach after the battle with Ursula (in which he captained the struggle bus). Did he sleep on those slats of wood? Did he spend the whole night paddling around looking for Ariel? I need to know!
- RIP I lost her once, I’m not gonna lose her again
- “She bewitched you” YES ARIEL, you tell the haters!
- Eric nearly falling off the bowsprit at the beginning and Grimsby being like “Eric be careful I swear to god” and then Eric nearly falling from the same part of the ship again at the end! We love symmetry
- Ariel must have some sort of immunity to hitting the water from a height, because holy shit that drop form the castle!! Also, when she and Eric jump from Ursula she’s completely unfazed and has to drag as less unfazed Eric to the surface
- Love that Ariel gives Max a little helping hand to the lifeboat
- The scene where Ariel turns back into a mermaid wad a massive improvement from the original! Eric holding her tighter and actually trying to stop Ursula despite probably being very freaked out by everything
- The opening at the top of Ariel’s grotto and the skylight in Eric’s library!! The parallels in this film between these two are sublime! They’re both looking up at a world beyond their own

love love love how they fleshed out prince eric's character in the live-action film. they make him relatable af, especially with his 'search for identity being hindered by a loving-yet-smothering parental figure' arc. they make him feel like an Actual Person with his own wants and needs and silly quirks instead of the satellite love interest they portrayed him as in the animated film. what's more, they actually show us why and how ariel fell so hard so fast for him in the first place. plus it just makes me really happy thinking about how now that they they're working on their happily ever after together, eric can learn as much as he wants about the seven seas and ariel can learn everything her heart desires about the human world and they'll just have such a good time discovering new treasures together UGH this movie wasn't perfect but the character development was very much *chef's kiss*
