Making a Boardgame!
(3/3)
Now that we had everything decided and the gameplay tested, we started working on creating the cards and the board itself.
Here are a few of my contributions to the cards:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
As you can see, we went for some interesting colour choices and cool designs to follow throughout the visuals of the game.
Because we were actually going to print these, I also did designs for the backs of the hand gesture and the risk cards, which I’ve also added in below:

For the back of the hand gesture cards (showing the 3 difficulty tier hands).

And then the back of all of the Risk Cards, with the thumbs up/down.
After getting everything printed, this was the result!

Inspiration for my lighting brief
When researching for this brief I wanted to avoid a concept around horror. However even though my level and game concept are not horror based, I took influence from the recently released Resident Evil 2 remake, when designing the floor plan for my level. I tried to make a level that didn’t necessarily feel linear. The player must explore the mansion and overcome certain obstacles, with the player sometimes ending up in an area they previously explored, opening up a shortcut in the process.

For our next game development brief we are tasked with creating a level design doc based on an existing IP. I've chosen the 2016 game DOOM and started out researching the game and planning how my level will fit into the existing game. I then went through the enemies of the game to find out what enemies had been encountered up to this point so as to not use any that haven't been introduced yet. I saw no opportunity to early introduce enemies so I'll be sticking to previous introductions only. This works well as the prior level introduced a handful of new enemies including two very well known enemies of the franchise.

Live Brief Summaries
History:
The goal is to promote the history course at Uclan via a 30-45 second animated clip. Client wants us to summarise history in one sentance, who wouldn’t want to know about the history of their own world? Some good slogans could be ‘Finding the root truth of the past’, ‘Everything before the click is history’, ‘Not just chalk and talk’, ‘The how and why’.
An overview of the course, it was made apparent that the stereotypes about learning history are all incorrect. The client wants to portray this in the animation, stating that the lessons aren’t just ‘chalk and talk’ and that they try to remove the highschool steroetype by making lessons more interactive. It’s not just studying the past, they focus far more on how events affected humankind as a whole - local history. Learning about the people of the past, not just the great men.
Has a strand in public history - which is the more employable side of the subject. This and direct focuses on public history, military history and international history; which has its own specialised lectures based on location. Not just limited to the UK, unheard of history is often brought up an speculated about.
Field trips to historical sites and placements to museums, heritage providors and doing projects for schools are all quite common. Teachers have constant interaction with students, there are no office hours - their doors are always open and the teachers are willing to help. They want to work with the students and believe there is no ‘us and them’. Articles are posted often for alumni to interact with and discuss. The course has the highest rated university department for student satisfaction in the country.
History being a ‘useless degree’ is not true! The course has high employability in jobs that most people are unaware of, along with teaching. A mere handful of the skills learnt include: learning to lecture, reflecting, group thinking, employability skills and all skills learnt are transferable.
Character designs:
Tumblr media
(^ I wanted to go with the Kurzgesagt style, as seen in the globe and the rounded character, but I also tried an eagle - for soaring through time - and various hats related to certain historical periods.)
Journalism:
Client would prefer us to focus more on all the course has to offer; the wide variety of options it has and choices it gives you to specialise. Slogans could be ‘The eyes of the world’, ‘Witnesses for future generations’ ‘Find me a story’.
It was drilled that international work was in abundance on this course, along with their three main strands of the main course; Sports journalism, international journalism and multimedia journalism. An important point to remember is that the course is very profession based and practical/ hands on. There’s a technical side to it, students produce their own things using industry grade equipment, they can travel to actual events and interview people to practice their skills in real time. There are dedicated ‘news days’ where students group together and produce their own word to be presented by the end of the day, using an actual production set, just like in the industry.
Teaches about how news consumption evolves, how to keep up with the times - they’ve moved their work to be mostly digital now and are involved with plenty of social media.
An added bonus is the National Council for Training Journalists (NCTJ), with this course being the only one where students can gain a certificate from them, which puts them ahead of the game employment wise.
A course that prepares you for the industry with industry trained teachers, some of them still active in companies. All it takes is a single ask towards a teacher and they can reach out to their contacts to see what jobs are on offer. Transferable skills are learned on the course, such as Groupwork/ teambuilding, planning/ management, interviewing techniques etc. Can go into PR, training/ teaching, editing as a few job examples. The goal of the course is to teach the basics of journalism, then apply it ot one specific area.
Character designs:
Tumblr media
(^ The microphone character was inspired by a character from ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’ which would’ve been the perfect character for the brief but that would be plagarism. A nose for ‘news nose’ - refering to when the course presenter mentioned having a ‘nose for news’. A mobile phone to represent that the journalism course keeps up to date, and a dictophone as it is sometimes what journalists use. V Below is the character from ‘The Amazing World of Gumball’.)

Making a Boardgame!
(2/3)
After creating a temporary paper version of our Patty Cake boardgame, we playtested it several times ourselves, then got a few of our peers to then playtest it too and read through our rules we’d put together to see if any of it made sense to fresh minds.
Tumblr media
We videod this, took down notes, and asked our peers to review what they’d played and give some feedback on what worked and what didn’t.
This gave us a point to start tidying up our idea and getting a solid plan for how our Patty Cake boardgame would play out.
We threw around a few ideas of how to up the difficulty of the game and make it more interesting, and came to the conclusion of adding Risk Cards and including difficulty between one and three for each hand gesture.
The concept of this Risk Cards would be that by picking one up from the deck, you’d be taking a risk...
Tumblr media
So with this, you would either pick out a good card or a bad card - these would say something along the lines of, “Your team has two chances to complete your Patty Cake sequence correctly” for a good card, or, “You must add two more movements to your sequence this turn” for a bad card, for exmaple.
All whilst we were working on the gameplay and what hand gestures to include etc., myself and the other arty one from our team started designing potential designs for the hand gesture cards.
We very much liked the idea of making everything about hands on the card, and this is what we came up with for our first rough sketch ideas:

The Falls, I’ve done the block out for the second section of Katto, which introduces the Shuriken thrower, i think im ready to take it out of blockout. I really enjoyed this one, having the camera always in frame of the objective, or the critical path, i of course am going to add some collectables to the level so its not completely linear but i do enjoy this section. Testing will obviously show how flawed it is (yaay) One thing though, i need to model or make something for the Shuriken Thrower, and it really needs to stand out so that that player can always see it/its easy to see
after i’ve done that and spruced it up a little bit, onto the third section (which will be pretty short) and the boat section!!
the video is just a small playthrough of the full section to this level just an fyi

Textures - Games Jam 2018
One of the other jobs I have been given during this Games Jam has been to texture the “Neon Urban” themed levels in our game.
They’re low poly models, and we were aiming for a simple block-style colour system. This area has an 80s retro vibe hence the slightly tinted purples (which would match with the bright purple/pink skybox in the level.
Along with these textures, I also developed matching light-maps, as the blue strips on the models are meant to be neon lights.

UcLan 2019 Games Jam-
Due to the short time given to making our game, we will be using the generic UE4 mannequin but to make the enemies stand out a little more we have decided to design masks for the enemies to wear, currently we have three mask concepts to define the different types of enemies. The pig represents the standard enemies who will have guns, the fish mask is for those less competent, they won’t have guns, and lastly, the bull mask is for the heavy enemy, who will require more hits to go down. Other masks included a cat, devil and squid.
