Evangeline Gorman’s Diary...Part 3

Well, diary, I guess this was inevitable. It happened...we got caught.

We’ve never done any more than kiss, but for us that’s as bad as anything. Our parents see this as being as bad as having sex before marriage, especially mine.

That’s right, Mrs. Gertrude walked in on me and Auggie kissing. This wasn’t the first time we did this...or the second. I think we both knew this would happen eventually. So why did we do it?

I don’t know. I don’t regret it, though.

Mrs. Gertrude was pretty mad. She yelled and yelled at Auggie. But as scary as that was, I knew whatever my Mom came up with would be worse...MUCH worse.

Mrs. Gertrude called my Mom the next night.

One of my sisters told me that she was in disbelief at first and refused to accept that I broke one of her rules.

THEN she got angry. Really angry. She started screaming at everybody, except Mrs. Gertrude. I didn’t get to hear any of this, because she won’t speak to me. Oh well.

Within a week, Auggie and I were engaged. Yup, engaged at 17. This my Mom’s perfect Quiverfull dream. It’s probably the only time she’s ever been jealous of me.

I don’t know what to think about being engaged. I love Auggie and know he’s a good man. I think we will be happy together because he actually listens to me, and I know he cares about my music. Plus, I’m turning 18 in a couple of months, which means my parents were planning to marry me off in a couple of years anyway. At least I’ve ended up with a guy who has a career. We won’t have to make our kids sleep in a renovated barn.

Well, Diary, we got married. It was a beautiful day, and I’m so happy that I never have to go back to my parents’ home again. I wasn’t quite 18 when we got married...just a couple of weeks away.

As you can see, I wore my sister Hope’s dress...without the modesty panel my Mom made her wear. My Mom was really angry, but I knew she couldn’t stop me. I didn’t realize until now how much my parents depended on my obedience. If I just do what I want, there’s not a lot they can do. Better I wear an immodest dress than refuse to get married...at least for them.

I never realized how much I loved Auggie until we got married. He told me his new job is making sure I’m happy, and that we don’t need to rush into having kids...or have kids at all. He told me he loves that I love piano and he wants me to use the musical gifts that God gave me. I know being a teenage bride wasn’t my goal for my life...but I feel pretty lucky that I ended up with this guy.

We both have mixed feelings about marrying so young. We love each other so much, but we don’t want to start a trend for our younger siblings. But I think waiting to get pregnant and having careers could also be good examples for them.

I had a lot of fun posing for wedding pictures. My parents were there and they weren’t very happy, but I didn’t mind at all. Gertrude and Vince actually seemed pretty happy for us, and I appreciated that. I don’t think they’re quite as rigid as my parents.

It’s nice we can kiss without fear of punishment now.

This picture is probably my favorite.

I know for a fact my parents only let my sisters be bridesmaids because they wanted them to get pictures with the Carmellos. And my parents are hoping that Cam and Giada will fall in love! But there’s no way Cam is getting married so soon. I laughed and laughed with Giada about their plans, and Cam laughed, too!

Well, dear Diary, I’ll let you know how marriage goes! It’s been pretty fun so far, now that we’re on our honeymoon ;)

Super Bowl: Tampa Bay Buccaneers take title as Tom Brady gets record seventh win

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers have won Super Bowl LV, beating Kansas City Chiefs 31 to 9 in Florida.

The win means legendary quarterback Tom Brady, who was also named the game’s Most Valuable Player (MVP), walks away with his seventh Super Bowl victory – a record for the sport, after winning his first six with the New England Patriots.

The 43-year-old set up three touchdowns before half-time, all but sealing the win against the reigning champions, with the team wrapping up the victory in the third quarter with a fourth trip over the line.

After the win, Brady said: “I’m so proud of all of these guys out here, everything we dealt with all year. We had a rough month of November but BA (Bruce Arians, head coach) had all the confidence in us, the team had a lot of confidence and we came together at the right time.

“I think we knew this was going to happen, didn’t we? We ended up playing our best game of the year.”

It is the second time Tampa Bay have lifted the Vince Lombardi Trophy, after first winning the event in 2003 in San Diego.

The Kansas City Chiefs’ talisman Patrick Mahomes failed to make an impact in a game he was expected to dominate for the 2020 champions, after a season that saw him become one of the youngest quarterbacks in Super Bowl history.

The huge event, which took place at the Raymond James Stadium in Tampa, was held in front of a reduced crowd and thousands of cardboard cut-outs amid the COVID-19 outbreak in Florida.

Across the entire NFL, more than a million coronavirus tests were carried out during the season in an effort to keep the sport going despite the pandemic.

Much of the season was played behind closed doors, with some games later allowing a limited number of fans in the stands.

And while the game is the main focus of proceedings for the Super Bowl, the halftime show and commercials also come under the spotlight.

Canadian singer The Weeknd had the honour of performing at the halftime show, blasting his hits such as Can’t Feel My Face and Starboy backed by violinists and dancers.

His appearance hit its climax on the pitch, where he was joined by an army of masked dancers to perform his mega-hit Blinding Lights.

Meanwhile, a number of major brands spent a rumoured $5.5m (£3.9m) on 30-second ad spots during the game.

Mike Myers and Dana Carvey reprised their roles from Wayne’s World alongside Cardi B for Uber Eats, while rapper Drake alongside actor Paul Rudd appeared in a commercial for State Farm insurance.

Before the event singer H.E.R performed America The Beautiful, while country star Eric Church was joined by Jazmine Sullivan for the national anthem.

Amanda Gorman, the 22-year-old poet who shot to global stardom after appearing at Joe Biden’s inauguration, also performed ahead of the game.

Usually, members of the winning team would yell “I’m going to Disney World” down the camera before heading over to nearby Orlando the next day to take part in a Super Bowl parade at the Magic Kingdom – but COVID-19 has put a halt to that this year, with Disney deciding against the annual event so as not to attract crowds to the park.

Feedback from my peers

Suzanna

She pointed out three out of my four themes that I could look at into more detail.

She suggested that for my magazine theme that I could look into the layout and the typography for both ‘The Face’ and ‘Fuse’ magazines. She then advised that I could look into Vince Frost who also had done some magazine designs. I could then compare the three magazine layout/typography, or I could focus on one, and go into great detail.

She said that Paula Scher designed a lot of album covers in a short space of time, it was maybe for Atlantic records. And that quite a few post-modernists started their careers designing album covers. She suggested a couple of names to look into- Neville Brody and Jamie Reid.

She thought that I should not avoid my packaging and net ideas as that is something that I am interested in. She thought that I could look at packaging around one item, or how packaging effect people with limited movement and look at the way it is/can be solved.

My Thoughts

Looking at Suzanna’s feedback she has given some more great ideas for where I could lead my work.

I would really like to look into the magazines that she had suggested, but there were some negatives with that:

I can only find one book best suitable to Vince Frost with his magazine designs, this book might only have a few. Frost, V. (2015) Design Your Life. Australia: Penguin Random House.

But a positive in doing this I found a book that includes 100 different magazine covers. I may have a look at this book further to see if there are any aspects that I can work with. Taylor, S & Brody, N. (2006). 100 Years of Magazine Covers. London: Black Dog Publishing

After having a quick look at Paula Scher’s album covers I began to admire her graphical styles in some of her album covers. I then looked at both Neville Brody’s and Jamie Reid’s type of album design. Both their styles are a bit more similar to mine so I may work around this for my essay. I will look into this in more detail.

I also like her ideas with looking into packaging that aids people with disabilities. Or if I cannot find one, try and create one in my essay writing. I am interested in this as I do have a physical disability and sometimes find it hard to open packaging.

Suzanna has messaged me saying that she was meaning a different magazine called Fuse, one by Neville Brady. I am able to purchase all of these magazines, but at a high price I have to be sure on if I want to look into magazines first

Morgan Stanley shuffles wealth management unit

Morgan Stanley (MS.N) has shuffled its wealth unit, eliminating a layer of management and promoting two key executives, according to a memo reviewed by Reuters on Friday.

The biggest U.S. brokerage by head count named Vince Lumia, head of private wealth management, its new head of the field. Lumia will report to wealth co-heads Andy Saperstein and Shelley O’Connor.

Mandell Crawley, the bank’s chief marketing officer, will replace Lumia as head of private wealth management.

The firm eliminated its divisional level with the goal of flattening the organization, naming former divisional heads Bill McMahon and Rick Skae as vice chairmen of wealth management.

A bank spokesman confirmed the contents of the memo.

Morgan Stanley saw its revenue from wealth management rise 11 percent in the first quarter to $4.1 billion. The unit also posted a pretax margin of 24 percent, in line with a target set by Chief Executive James Gorman.

The changes come as the wealth industry prepares to implement the Department of Labor Fiduciary Rule, which sets a standard for brokers who sell retirement products and requires them to put clients’ best interests ahead of their own bottom line. The rule will take effect June 9.

In another major shift for the industry, Morgan Stanley said in May it is pulling back from the expensive recruitment wars for financial advisors, following similar steps taken by peer Bank of America (BAC.N) Merrill Lynch.

Optimism among S&P 500 CEOs

SAN FRANCISCO: U.S. President Donald Trump's administration is only hours old, but already a small parade of S&P 500 companies' chiefs have voiced optimism that his promised tax cuts, stimulus spending and deregulation will boost corporate profits.In the days ahead of Friday's inauguration, senior executives from Morgan Stanley (MS.N), Delta Air Lines (DAL.N) and other major U.S. corporations said the Trump White House has already sparked a brighter outlook for business.

"There is certainly more reason to be optimistic as we enter 2017 than there was at the beginning of 2016," Morgan Stanley CEO James Gorman said on Tuesday after his bank said profit doubled in the fourth quarter. He pointed to factors including a surge in consumer confidence after the Nov. 8 election and lower taxes promised by Trump.

Just under way, fourth-quarter earnings reporting season is providing a glimpse of what major large companies expect under Trump, and their take is largely positive so far.

Over a dozen S&P 500 companies reporting results in the last week have signaled optimism about potential tax cuts, infrastructure spending, employee benefit costs and reduced regulation.

With corporate earnings already on the mend after a slump in oil prices and a strong dollar last year, S&P 500 companies are expected on average to grow their earnings by 6.3 percent in the December quarter and 13.6 percent in the March quarter, according to Thomson Reuters I/B/E/S. Since the November election, the S&P 500 has rallied 6 percent to record highs, in part due to expectations Trump will pass policies that stimulate the economy. Banks have led gains, with investors betting Trump will roll back regulations passed by President Barack Obama following the 2008 financial crisis, which many investors say went too far.

After United Continental Holdings on Tuesday posted lower December-quarter profits, airline President Scott Kirby told analysts on a call, "It feels like we are on a really good path. It felt to me like there was an inflection point after the election for business demand."

An also upbeat Delta Air Lines Chief Executive Ed Bastian told analysts this month that he was excited about potential infrastructure spending promised by Trump, as well as a chance to make his case about unfair competition from Middle Eastern airlines heavily subsidized by governments.

Vince Delie, Chief Executive of F.N.B., which own First National Bank, said on a quarterly conference call on Thursday that he was saw more confidence among commercial customers and a potential pickup in lending.

"You don't want to step on a mine. So the best course of action is to be somewhat optimistic, positive but also somewhat noncommittal so you're not trapped one way or another," said Robert Pavlik, chief market strategist at Boston Private Wealth in New York.

Trump's frequent use of Twitter to single out companies for criticism or praise has created volatile spikes in trading of their shares, which is good for online brokers including Charles Schwab and TD Ameritrade.

"Each time, it's a new market event and a potential trading opportunity for our clients. Like everyone else, we're watching it with interest," TD Ameritrade Director of Finance Jeff Goeser said on a conference call on Wednesday after the company reported an increase in quarterly profits.
