“The fact of the matter is that the south is funny because it’s ridiculous. Like, I can’t remember the exact details of the whole thing, but my neighbor growing up definitely went to jail for being involved in an organized ring of tractor thieves. One friend’s dad was a former professional drag racer whose compound included an airplane hangar, a forklift, a single-wide trailer, and a giant yard that occasionally doubled as a mud pit where people would race beater cars while crashing into each other. (I once rode shotgun as his twelve-year-old son zoomed around in one of these races; it was fantastic.)
“Another friend had an unfortunate habit of waking up early to go hunting and then forgetting to take his gun out of his truck before he got to school, which I’m pretty sure is a felony; years later, he became a wildlife officer and briefly went viral after someone posted a video of him wrestling a deer to the ground in order to safely remove it from a thrift store. And then a couple years ago, a series of unsolved horse deaths prompted many in the local equestrian community to worry that there was a horse serial killer on the loose. (Local police ended up concluding that the killers were likely feral hogs, but that doesn’t explain how one of the horses died from a bullet wound.)”

What vaccinations does my dog need and when should they be administered?
Tumblr media
Dog Care: Essential Vaccinations and Timelines
Providing proper healthcare for your furry companion is an integral part of responsible dog ownership. Vaccinations play a crucial role in safeguarding your dog's health by protecting them against various infectious diseases. Understanding which vaccinations your dog needs and when to administer them is essential for their well-being. In this article, we will delve into the primary vaccinations recommended for dogs, detailing the diseases they prevent and the recommended timelines for their administration. By staying informed about your dog's vaccination needs, you can ensure a long, healthy, and happy life for your canine companion.
Core Vaccinations
Core vaccinations are those recommended for all dogs, regardless of their lifestyle or environment. These vaccinations protect against diseases that pose a significant threat to dogs and can be transmitted to humans as well. The following are the core vaccinations your dog should receive:
a. Rabies: Rabies is a fatal disease that affects the central nervous system of both dogs and humans. Most jurisdictions require dogs to be vaccinated against rabies by law. Typically, the first vaccine is given at around 12-16 weeks of age, followed by regular boosters every one to three years, depending on local regulations.
b. Distemper: Canine distemper is a highly contagious and often fatal viral disease. Puppies should receive their first distemper vaccine at six to eight weeks of age, followed by a series of boosters until they are around 16 weeks old. Adult dogs should receive regular booster shots to maintain protection.
c. Canine Parvovirus: Parvovirus is a highly contagious viral infection that primarily affects puppies and young dogs. Vaccination against canine parvovirus should start at around six to eight weeks of age, with booster shots given every three to four weeks until the puppy reaches around 16 weeks of age.
Non-Core Vaccinations
Non-core vaccinations are recommended based on the individual dog's lifestyle, geographic location, and exposure risk. These vaccinations protect against diseases that are prevalent in certain areas or situations. While not universally required, they are highly recommended for dogs with specific risk factors. Some common non-core vaccinations include:
a. Bordetella bronchiseptica: Also known as kennel cough, this bacterial infection is highly contagious and commonly transmitted in places where dogs congregate, such as boarding facilities or dog parks. Vaccination is particularly important if your dog will have exposure to these environments.
b. Leptospirosis: Leptospirosis is a bacterial disease that can be transmitted to dogs and humans through infected urine. Dogs that spend time outdoors, come into contact with wildlife or bodies of water, or live in high-risk areas should receive the leptospirosis vaccine.
Vaccination Schedule and Booster Shots
Consulting with a veterinarian is crucial for developing a tailored vaccination schedule for your dog. They will consider your dog's age, health, lifestyle, and local disease prevalence to determine the appropriate vaccination plan. Generally, puppies will require a series of vaccinations starting at six to eight weeks of age, with boosters given every three to four weeks until they are around 16 weeks old.
After the initial series, most vaccines require boosters to maintain immunity. Core vaccinations are typically administered every one to three years, while non-core vaccinations may have different schedules depending on the specific vaccine and the dog's risk factors.
Conclusion
Proper vaccination is a vital component of responsible dog care. By staying up-to-date with your dog's vaccinations, you can protect them from potentially life-threatening diseases. Remember to consult with your veterinarian to develop a vaccination plan tailored to your dog's specific needs. Regular check-ups and discussions with your vet regarding your dog's vaccination status will ensure that they receive the necessary vaccinations at the appropriate times.
In addition to vaccinations, it's essential to prioritize other aspects of dog care, such as regular veterinary check-ups, proper nutrition, exercise, and parasite prevention. A holistic approach to your dog's well-being will contribute to their overall health and happiness.
Remember, vaccination not only protects your dog but also helps prevent the spread of infectious diseases in the canine population. By keeping your dog's vaccinations up to date, you are not only safeguarding their health but also contributing to the well-being of the entire dog community.
In conclusion, vaccinations are a critical aspect of responsible dog care. Core vaccinations, such as rabies, distemper, and parvovirus, should be administered according to a schedule recommended by your veterinarian. Non-core vaccinations, like bordetella bronchiseptica and leptospirosis, are recommended based on your dog's lifestyle and exposure risks. By following a proper vaccination schedule and staying informed about your dog's specific needs, you can ensure their protection against preventable diseases. Remember to consult with your veterinarian for personalized advice and guidance on your dog's vaccination requirements. Together, we can keep our canine companions healthy, happy, and protected.

New Podcast “Bad Seeds” Investigates Black Market For Endangered Species
Tumblr media
School of Humans and iHeart Podcasts have announced a new podcast, Bad Seeds. And no, it's not about the seeds for your garden. It's much more insidious.
The phrase “black market” evokes sinister images: Stacks of AK-47s. Crates of cocaine. Caged tigers. But potted succulents on a windowsill? No one is calling Crime Stoppers for that. And yet, the biggest black market you’ve never heard of is blooming right under your nose. Whether it’s a 4,000-pound cactus shoveled from the Arizona desert or delicate orchids pinched from the tangled jungle of Peru, rare plants are at the center of a rapidly growing -- and lucrative -- world of crime.
The eight-part series begins with a special Earth Month launch on April 12 with two episodes. From Mexican drug cartels cashing in by ripping succulents from the desert, or a cabal of corrupt government officials secretly peddling endangered species, Bad Seeds looks into an underworld where obsessive collectors and hardened criminals collide. Along the way, we explore how all these crime sprees and cover-ups affect everyday consumers and enthusiasts -- and the fate of the planet. Model and sustainability activist Summer Rayne Oakes was stunned when a Modern Farmer feature on her prodigiously verdant Brooklyn apartment went viral in 2016. She catapulted into the forefront of a houseplant trend that peaked during the Covid pandemic. Little did she know that her popular unboxing videos and fame would inadvertently lead some obsessed consumers and suppliers to collect plants through nefarious means to fuel the growing plant obsession. After years of advocacy in the sustainable fashion and food industries, Oakes urges consumers to take a closer look at how the succulents and orchids adorning homes and Instagram videos are sourced. “To be honest, I feel a level of responsibility,” Oakes says today. “One of the reasons that drew me to host this podcast was to help folks understand the underreported nature of unethical plant harvesting, the detrimental ramifications it can have on the environment, and how we can be more aware of what to look out for.” In Bad Seeds, Oakes talks to the buyers, the sellers, the obsessives, and those who came face-to-face with the criminals behind an underworld few know exist. The podcast features interviews with avid plant collectors, US Fish and Wildlife Special Agents, scientists, and historians who show us that the passion for plants has been going on for a long time - from tulip mania in the Netherlands to the poacher who derailed Brazil's entire economy at the height of the Industrial Revolution. We also talk to people on the ground in places where deforestation and plant poaching has taken a grizzly toll. These stories feature some juicy twists and turns, but also expose the real threats to biodiversity that these crimes cause.
School of Humans is a multi-platform production company producing series for television (Dirty Jobs, Six Degrees with Mike Rowe, Stuff You Should Know). The company launched its audio division with the hit true-crime podcast HELL AND GONE. Bad Seeds is distributed by iHeart Podcasts and will be available on the iHeartRadio app and everywhere podcasts are heard.

Rabies in Dogs Signs - Creature Companion
Rabies is a viral infection that affects the nervous system. It mainly affects carnivores (bats) but can affect other mammals as well. Rabies virus is responsible for this. It causes acute and progressive inflammation of the brain and spinal cord. It is fatal once clinical signs are present. Although rabies can be found in many countries around the world, only a few countries have been declared rabies free through successful eradication programs. Rabies is rarely a problem on islands that have strict quarantine programs. Although rabies from domestic dogs is virtually eliminated in North America and Europe, it can still be transmitted to wildlife such as foxes and raccoons.
Tumblr media
The most common way the virus is transmitted is by biting an infected animal. It can remain in the body for several weeks before symptoms appear. Most cases in dogs are diagnosed within 21 to 80 days. However, the incubation time can be significantly shorter or longer.
Dog with Rabies Signs and Diagnosis
Disturbances of the central nervous system are a common symptom in rabid animals. The best indicators of central nervous system disturbance are sudden, severe behavioral changes and unexplained paralysis. These symptoms may get worse over time. Behavioral changes include signs of sudden loss of appetite, nervousness, anxiety, over-excitability and apprehension. An animal may seek solitude or befriend a hostile animal. Wild animals can become aggressive and lose their fear of humans. You can also spot animals that usually roam the streets in broad daylight.
Although it can be seen in all species, the furious form is known as "crazy dog syndrome". The animal may be irritable and may use its teeth and claws aggressively or cruelly at the slightest provocation. The dilation of the pupil keeps the animal alert and anxious. Attacks can be triggered by noise. These animals are less likely to fear other animals and can be aggressive. Young cubs are playful and crave human companionship. They can bite even when domesticated, and then they become vicious within a few hours. Seizures and loss of muscle coordination become more common as the disease progresses. Progressive paralysis can lead to death.
Paralytic rage, also known as "dumb rage", is characterized by paralysis of the muscles of the throat and jaw. This can often be accompanied by excessive salivation and an inability to swallow. Common symptoms include drooping in the lower jaw. These dogs are not ferocious and rarely bite. This form can infect people if they touch a dog's mouth or give it medicine. Paralysis spreads throughout the body and death can occur within a few hours.
Rabies is often difficult to diagnose, especially in areas with low prevalence. It is easy to mistake rabies in its early stages for other diseases or general aggressive tendencies. Laboratory tests should be done to confirm the diagnosis of rabies. The animal must be euthanized and its remains sent to the laboratory for analysis.
Control of Rabies
The World Health Organization (WHO) has strict guidelines for controlling rabies in the dog population. These guidelines include:
Notification of suspected cases, euthanasia of dogs with clinical symptoms and bites of animals suspected of rabies.
Quarantine and leash laws to reduce contact between vulnerable dogs
A mass vaccination program with continuous reinforcement
Control of stray dogs and euthanasia of unvaccinated stray dogs
Dog Registration Program.
Rabies vaccination programs are strictly implemented. Animal Collection for Rabies Control recommends vaccination every 3 years, 1 year apart after the initial series of 2 vaccines. Since rabies is often seen in cats, they should also be vaccinated.

Shapeshifting Enchantments
Most of the lore in the upcoming series will be edited compilations of dozens of posts from the last two years. The Definition of Shapeshifting Magic
The expected Duration of Shapeshifting Magic
Abilities and Familiarity with Shifted Form, both those that carry over from the target’s human mind and those unique to the shifted form.
The Risks of Shapeshifting Magic, especially with more drastic changes.
Definition
Shapeshifting is a type of enchantment that changes the physical form of the enchanted target. It falls under the category of Life Magic and Enchantments, and is popular among Mages with a focus themed around change, disguise, nature, wildlife, freedom, etc.
Duration
While long-term shapeshifting is a power reserved for the Fae Folk, short-term shapeshifting is an enchantment that some mages use to their advantage.
Shapeshifting functions as any other enchantment, with all the limitations that implies. Namely, because shapeshifting changes the body in such a dramatic way, it wears off very quickly, rarely lasting longer than 12 hours.
In addition, due to the effect that distance has upon an enchantment, it’s not practical for a mage to cast a shapeshifting enchantment on anyone but themselves. It’d simply wear off too fast. That being said, there are rare cases where someone casts an intentionally botched shapeshifting enchantment upon another person with the goal of causing them bodily harm (see “Risks”).
However, this means that a mage can technically cast the enchantment upon themselves indefinitely. Keyword being “technically.” Since the magic doesn't have to travel any distance to return to the soul of the caster, the mage would immediately have the magical energy to cast the enchantment again as soon as the first one wore off. This assumes that the mage doesn’t use too much of their magic for anything else in the meantime. Shapeshifting is an intense enchantment due to how much it changes about the target, putting the mage at risk of overexerting themselves.
Abilities and Familiarity with Shifted Form
Shapeshifting only affects how the physical form looks, not the brain and memories within. However, sometimes that muscle memory won't transfer over to the thing you've shifted into.
For example, a shifted individual is as capable of speech as the anatomy of their shifted form allows. A bird has the proper muscles to mimic human speech; a cat can sometimes mimic phrases like "hello" as seen in viral videos; but a fish has absolutely no way of forming the sounds necessary for speech. You still remember how to speak; the question is whether the thing you've shifted into can use that memory in a meaningful way.
In a similar vein, a shapeshifter has to get used to the form they're using, so most just stick with a few types of creatures to shapeshift into. Much like translation magic, shapeshifting magic does require some amount of familiarity between the mage and the thing they want to shift into. You don't need to be a vet or anything, but don't try to transform into something you've never seen or spent time with before. Your magic comes from within your soul, as do the ideas of what you do with it. If you don't have a clear idea of what you're trying to shapeshift into, then you're probably gonna end up shapeshifting into a very messed-up, incoherent version of that thing.
Risks
Shapeshifting is a pretty intense enchantment, with potentially messy side effects if you test the limits too much. You can technically shapeshift into anything, but certain things are very bad for your health to shapeshift into. You are still a human while shapeshifted; just a human with some bits rearranged/added and a few cosmetic tweaks like fur and such. Humans have the unfortunate disadvantage that if blood cannot pass into a part of the body, that part of the body dies.
As a result, you're better off shapeshifting into something with similar body systems to a human (i.e. mammals, and maybe some other warm-blooded creatures) because it means there's less stuff that the enchantment has to "change" with each cast, therefore using less magical energy to do so and potentially lasting longer.
While you could shapeshift into an inanimate object if you wanted, it's not a good idea. Since inanimate objects have no circulatory system, shapeshifting into something like a wooden crate makes you extremely likely to cut off circulation to the brain and die. You can shapeshift on a superficial level to give yourself some form of camouflage, but anything more intensive is ill-advised. Just because you CAN turn into a wooden crate doesn't mean you SHOULD.

Lost in Waste: A Gleaners Paradise. The first in a series of three chapters.
If you happen to be an armchair gardener, you can understand the frustration you feel when you lose a couple of heads of lettuce to garden slugs or maybe a tomato plant or two to heavy rain mold. There is also the pure satisfaction as you yank a handful of carrots from the ground, pick a pepper or two and delight in the fresh dilled chill of a cucumber for dinner all after a quick rinse in the sink.
Leveling the playing field.
Now, compare your backyard bounty to that of an industrial/commercial agricultural farm where acres take over from rows, miles from mounds and billions of dollars invested as opposed to a few dollar bills. While true, 30 to 40 percent of food waste in America comes from general home consumerism and lack of consumption, 165 billion dollars of wasted food product stems from the big corporate farmlands in our nation.
Fall into the gap.
How is it that we grow so much of the sustainable food resource, yet it is where the most waste can be found? Let’s look at this from the ground up:
•50 % of US land is farmland. •30% to 40 % of crops can be called waste crops during and post-harvest due to ground felling. •Food safety rules for farms that must register to legally operate fall under that are G.A.P. audited and certified. •Good Agricultural Practices, or G.A.P., will only allow any crop that hasn’t hit the dirt to be marketable.
Might sound harsh and defeatist, but when you take into consideration the health risks involved, it is a better alternative than risking serious medical hazards.
•Pesticides, CO2 emissions, fertilizers and synthetic hormones are used to make some fruits and veggies look more appealing to the fads of food consumerism, i.e., those who are looking for the right size of berry, apple, or variety of lettuce. •Unstable weather, rains, flooding can cause cross contaminated runoff while droughts, wildfires and dry seasons can wipe out entire fields due to water shortages. •Mechanical mishaps and flaws in harvest blades and tillers leave exposed root crops that have fallen through the harvest. •Deeper destruction by blades that leave huge slices cleaved in flesh, inviting invasive root and pest rot to take over. •Wildlife damage.
Social activism is the new global crop.
The topic of food waste has long since been in the headlines but as numbers now reach epic proportions due mainly to viral pandemics, global warming and harmful carbon destruction, food insecurity has become a number one reality that we must all face and fight. Allowing the labor shortage in the fields to continue contributing to this problem is one way to turn a blind social eye to it. Lack of proper storage for crops, market fluctuations, uncertain economic ground holds, and improper training of employees has brought about fair turn to foul play.
Gleaning groups, food saviors and nonprofit harvesting co-ops are now gaining access to the farmland wastes and feeding the shelves, pantries, kitchens, and open hands of Americans who have had no other option but to reach out for assistance in massive droves over the past decade. Food rescue quotas are on the rise with some gleaner’s groups receiving approval under FDA standard to salvage 20 million pounds of agricultural farm produce annually. The time to stop building walls around sustainable resources is here. Help feed our communities, our environment and keep our farmlands open and in business. Now, that makes common dollars and sense.

What I thought about We Bare Bears: The Movie
Salutations random people on the internet who probably won't read this. I am an Ordinary Schmuck. I write stories and reviews and draw comics and cartoons. Today, I'm going to do one-fourth of what I do best by talking about We Bare Bears: The Movie. Now, if you're a member of the cartoon community, odds are you've heard of We Bare Bears. It might not be as well-remembered as shows like Adventure Time or Steven Universe. But We Bare Bears has gained its own following through its charm and simplicity. So much so, that the series got it's very own movie, acting as the series finale to the beloved show. And to honor that milestone, I thought I'd share my thoughts by listing the things I liked and disliked about the film. Keep in mind, this is your last chance to avoid spoilers if you haven't seen the film yet (even though it’s been out for more than a week). Because I'll be spoiling the heck out of the movie by listing plot details, characters, and little touches that I think are worth mentioning. With that out of the way, let's dive on in with-
WHAT I LIKED
The Baby Bears meeting: To me, this was the first indicator that the movie was going to be the end. The Baby Bears meeting always felt like a moment saved for the series finale to me. Because answering the question of whether, or not, the Baby Bears find a home isn't something we need an answer to. But learning about how they met? Now that is something I'm sure most fans were curious about. And in true Baby Bears style, it's big and epic while still being downright adorable. Not to mention that Grizz's line at the end of how not looking alike is the best part about being brothers is not only sweet, but it also sells the main moral of the movie. If I had to nitpick, a part of me wonders how their separate journeys got them all in that one spot. But that's just another question that doesn't really require an answer, so I'm alright with not receiving one. Besides, that's what fan-fiction is for. GET ON IT WRITERS!
The Bears Running Through the City: I'm sure some people are tired of the cliche of having characters run through the city because they're late for something. But to me, I think that type of thing works for a series finale. It offers one last glance at familiar environments, but familiar characters as well. Not only do you get to see the people who love the Bears the most, but you even see the Human Bros in the background as the Bears run. This scene also sets up the conflict of the film as the Bears accidentally wreak havoc to get to where they're going. Even more so than usual. Plus, the scene serves as an excuse to hear the extended version of the theme song. And personally, I just love it when a series finale finds a way to incorporate the theme in a way that's better than the opening.
The Bears Complaint File: This was another indicator that the movie was going to be the end of the series. Usually, when a show like We Bare Bears finally acknowledges consequences to a character's actions, it's safe to say that the end is nigh. Because this presents the idea that the characters are close to being the straw that broke the camel's back. Which is something you can never do twice.
The Bears Viral Video: There are going to be people out there who'll find the Bears' video of outdated memes cringy. And to those people, I say: "THAT'S THE FRICKEN POINT GENIUSES!" Seriously, the characters themselves point out how what they're doing is going to be cringy, so it's safe to say that it was very much the intention from the writers. Besides, We Bare Bears always had scenes, and entire episodes, that acknowledged modern trends. And unlike other shows and movies, We Bare Bears doesn't use memes to stay fresh and hip with the kids. Instead, the show-and movie for that matter-uses trends to tell a story that will be timeless. Albeit dated in a few years. The only complaint I'll accept is that you didn't find their video funny, which can be valid. As for me, yeah, I chuckled. Speaking of-
The Comedy: We Bare Bears might not be the funniest show I've seen, but it still gets a chuckle out of me from time to time. It works with an absurd sense of humor, which is either your thing or it isn't. As for the jokes in the movie, most of them work pretty well, and the ones that don't aren't too bad. Personally, my favorite scene is when the Bears slowly drive away from Wildlife Control. The fact that that plan worked was so absurd, I could not help but laugh.
The Blackout: This was the straw that I mentioned earlier. The Bears have finally crossed a line that turns several people against them. In fact, it's very reminiscent of Ed Edd and Eddy's Big Picture Show, where the characters are forced to leave after doing something unforgivable. Although, there's one thing that We Bare Bears: The Movie does better than Big Picture Show. In Big Picture Show, fans never really saw what the Eds did that was so horrid. We were just told that it was so bad that our trio had to leave everything behind. Never seeing the answer always bothered me as a kid because I was always curious about how their last scam was somehow their worst. This is why it's nice that we actually get to see what the Bears did that was so unforgivable in We Bare Bears: The Movie.
Agent Trout: At some point, if you found Trout to be the most unlikeable piece of trash that he is, then you found the writers' possible intention. Trout acts as the movie's main antagonist, and on top of that, a character you're not supposed to like. And granted, there have been movie antagonists that are pure evil, but audiences can't help but love them anyway. But personally, I feel like making Trout a likable antagonist would have spoiled the point of the film. The movie's message, which I'll get into later, is about how being strange is ok, and that anyone can fit into society. Because society changes and people become accepting of these changes, every day. Trout is meant to represent the type of people who refuse the idea of change. He is a character who believes everything should operate as nature intended, which in this film's case, having bears reside in their natural habitats. And I honestly think Trout does his part as an antagonist really well. He's easy to hate for all the right reasons, and it's satisfying to see him get his coupons. It's also even better that we don't know his motivations to be so cruel to the Bears. Because there are real-life people out there who share Trout's mindset, with zero reasons behind why. Plus, his design is really great, being devoid of color and drawn with sharp edges in comparison to the bright and smooth looking characters. It helps him stand out from most characters in the show, while also making less overly threatening that the hunter in "Yuri and Ice Bear."
Officer Murphy: As far as I know, Officer Murphy was never really that big of a character. In fact, I don't even remember if the show mentioned his name until this movie. So to some fans, it might come off as a surprise that Murphy is given such an enormous role in this movie. Regardless, the position Murphy has is a great one. He is meant to represent the positive type of law enforcement. The officers who don't punish people due to who they are or what they look like. Instead, Officer Murphy is an officer who upholds the law to protect others. Take note of the fact that Murphy never wanted to physically or emotionally hurt the Bears. He understood that the Bears crossed the line and needed to be punished, but never to the extremes that Trout took. Speaking of Trout, Murphy acts as a great comedic sidekick for the antagonist. There's this nice running joke where Trout shoves random food in Murphy's mouth when Murphy makes an unwanted comment. And said running joke also leads to a great payoff in the movie's final act. So while I'm surprised at Murphy's inclusion, I gotta say that I really appreciate it.
Mystery Machine Cameo: I'm the biggest Scooby-Doo fan you'll ever meet, so believe when I say that seeing the iconic van just made me giddy.
Pizza Rat: I'll be the first to admit that Pizza Rat was a scumbag for betraying the Bears. But gosh darn it he was hilarious. I'm not kidding, whenever Pizza Rat showed up, he got funnier and funnier with each scene. Especially with his hatred of the rat with Spaghetti.
Grizz’s Nightmare: There are two things I really like about this scene. The first is that Grizz's nightmare is easily the creepiest the show has gotten. Seriously, something tells me that Trout's face being on the death train is going to be in kids' nightmares for weeks. The second is that there is some outstanding visual symbolism in this scene. It shows how Grizz is under a lot of stress for carrying the weight of protecting his brothers at all costs. Not only is that the best symbolism the show has ever used, but the scene gives the perfect insight into Grizz as a character. It's rare that we ever get to see the serious side of him, so I appreciate this one last glimpse into his personality.
That Epic Car Chase: If I'm being honest, there were not that many scenes that showed this movie being anything else than an extended episode. But this scene, however, was the most cinematic that We Bare Bears have ever been. The quality animation and cinematography help make the scene action-packed and surprisingly tense at times. Like I genuinely felt worried for my favorite trio of weirdos. There's not much I can say about this scene other than it was pretty impressive as well as awesome.
The Bears’ Plan Fails: It's weird saying that I like this, but I do. The movie could have gone down the same route as The Simpsons Movie by having the plan work for the sake of a joke. But no. We Bare Bears: The Movie actually employs logic and says, "you can't move to a new country, without a passport." And I can't help but give kudos to a movie that doesn't allow a simple solution.
The Third Act Break Up: Ah yes, the one cliche scene that makes audiences go "Really? We're doing this song and dance again?" Now, here's my defense: When it comes to something made for kids, you gotta be more forgiving of cliches. Odds are, some children watched this movie, and this will be their first third act break up. So you can't really fault the film for wanting to use a popular cliche. Granted, you could wish to have your kids watch something original, but that's a request that gets harder to do with each day. Besides, some cliches, like the third act break up, aren't bad unless they're done correctly. And I honestly think the movie uses the cliche just fine. The tension between Grizz and Panda has been built up throughout the film, so one final blow-out was bound to happen. Plus, the Bears don't really break up, but rather argue. If Panda had walked off dramatically, after saying "we're not brothers," then I would consider it a break up. Instead, it comes across as characters saying things they don't mean due to the heat of the moment.
Trout’s Bear Sanctuary: This was depressing but in a good way. The colors being swapped out from the show's usual bright pastels to dull and gray? That perfectly explains how dire the situation is without outwardly stating it. And yeah, I got a little misty eyed when watching this scene.
Grizz Talking to Baby Grizz: Another scene that I thought would be endgame would be having the grown-up Bears meeting the Baby Bears. I always dismissed this idea because I kept reminding myself of how it was impossible. I mean, how can you make characters meet a younger version of themselves? Turns out, the answer to that question was to have the younger version of a character act as a conscience. And yeah, this scene was pretty sweet and charming. And once again, my eyes started to get all misty. The tears didn't fight hard enough to get out, but they still fought pretty hard. Also, was it just me, or did it sound like Baby Grizz's voice actor was beginning to hit puberty?
The Bears Cheering for Grizz: I'm not the only one who thought it sounded like the bears were chanting/roaring Grizz's name, right? Because that's what I heard during this scene. Also, this scene was pretty epic, while doing its job to get me hyped up for what happens next.
The Moral: I've touched upon this moral earlier, and I want to make it clear how important it is. Some people feel as though they don't fit in anywhere, mostly because law enforcement has a history of punishing those that don't. But as Grizz says: "Nature adapts." The same goes for society. More and more people are fitting into groups that make them feel welcome. And those groups become more accepted with each passing year. Now to be fair, there are scum bags like Trout, who seek to punish people who are different. But again, there are still good souls like Murphy that attempt to do the morally correct thing no matter who/what you are. And I have to give kudos to We Bare Bears: The Movie for showing the brighter side of things. Because let's face it, we all could use something positive as of late. And I'm sure there are going to be people out there who'll call this movie 'preachy' and 'overly optimistic.' To those people, I would like to once again point out that this is a kid's film. Yes, kids are smarter than we give them credit for. But that doesn't mean you should give the harsh truth about how hard issues won't have simple solutions. They at least have until their teen years before that happens. Besides, look at the ending shot of bears normally fitting in with the rest of society. If you can see that and not love the symbolism being represented, then this film clearly is not for you.
WHAT I DISLIKED
It’s More of an Extended Episode Rather Than a Movie: Before I explain, I want to make it very clear that this is mostly a nitpick. Like I said before, there weren't many scenes that made this movie feel like, well, a movie. The animation never seemed better in comparison to the show, there weren't that many cinematic scenes, and the story didn't feel all that epic either. I honestly feel like the bears went on grander adventures than the one they went on here. Like the first time they became wanted criminals in "Captain Craboo." Yeah, remember that episode? It was emotional, intense, and actually kind of epic at times. And that episode was a half-hour long! The movie was an hour and eight minutes, and it still couldn't outdo the quality of "Captain Craboo." I know that I'm being a little harsh. But when I see "the movie" attached at the end of a show's title, I expect something grander and more epic than the original show. And yeah, We Bare Bears: The Movie is good for an extended episode, but not for what I consider for a movie.
What Supporting Cast?: Here's where looking at the movie as a series finale becomes an issue. This is the last time we'll see ALL of the characters from the show. So giving no proper goodbye from the supporting cast, who have all been significant people in the Bears' lives, feels wrong. The best-or rather worst-example of how wrong this is would be Nom-Nom. This was a character who was on the road towards redemption. So to have his last appearance show that he's the same jerk as he started is disappointing. The worst part is that the movie had the right idea with Charlie's scene. He helps the Bears one last time and says he's happy to do it for all the times they helped him. It's a touching moment and honestly feels like a proper goodbye to his character. And I can't help but see ways that the movie could have included the rest of the supporting cast. Have Ranger Tabes join Murphy and Trout due to her being a bear expert. Have Nom-Nom stand up for the bears at the Internet Animal rave. Have Chloe literally do anything other than stand and watch her best friends in the world be in danger! I understand that the Bears are the main characters who deserve most of the closure. But that doesn't mean other characters should be left in the dust because of it.
Panda’s Kind of Annoying: Cards on the table, I'm not the biggest fan of Panda. I don't think he's the worst character or even a bad one. But to me, he always came across as so whiney and annoying, and he's somehow worse in the movie. I get that he's a straight man who's meant to be the voice of reason, but there's a way to make a character like that entertaining. Some amazing straight men are specific iterations of Leonardo from Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles or Velma from Scooby-Doo. Those are characters that know how to be the calm of the crazy storm that their fellow cast. They offer witty comments and charismatic one-liners that prove they could also hold off on their own at times. Panda never really did that for me in neither the show nor the movie. He has his entertaining moments for sure, but most of them get overshadowed by his weaker ones. So while I don't exactly hate Panda, I can't really say I love him.
Ice Bear Does Next to Nothing: I'm not the only one who thinks Ice Bear was underutilized, right? In fact, We Bare Bears: The Movie is also similar to Ed Edd and Eddy's Big Picture Show in how to write its main trio. Both films pay more attention to the relationship between the leader and the straight man, where the comic relief is there for jokes and to give the occasional contribution. However, it's easy to forgive with Ed, because his character has little to offer other than being a loveable doofus. But Ice Bear? He has so much personality, so much backstory, and so much more to his character that you could make an entire movie just about him. Plus, going back to the fact that the film is a series finale, this is not a proper conclusion to his character. Sure, it's nice to see the Bears be accepted for who they are, but what about all that stuff with Yuri? Are you seriously telling me that the show wouldn't do anything with the fact that Ice Bear fell in love with Yuri's daughter?! I don't know, maybe it's just me, but I really wish the movie had something more in store for Ice Bear.
On The Road Song: Out of all the good qualities that We Bare Bears have, having good music isn't one of them. The few songs that the show has are not bad by no means but aren't really songs I would find myself listening to on repeat. The same goes for "Road Trip Song." It's perfectly fine, but nothing more than mediocre. Plus, weirdly, it's the only song in the movie. I mean, if you're gonna introduce something like a musical number, at least go all out with making a musical. I'm not saying the film should have been like Steven Universe: The Movie in terms of a soundtrack, but at least have two or three more songs. As is, it just feels like a weird detour on the road to Canada.
The Bears Survive Falling Off a Cliff:...That’s it. Just the ludicrousy of the fact that the Bears survive a fall like that. When you think about it, it removes a lot of the tension when you they could survive huge feats like that too.
Overall, We Bare Bears: The Movie gets a well earned B+ for me. When you judge it as a movie AND as a series finale, it loses a lot of points. But when you look at it as an extended episode? You get something that has a great moral, an outstanding antagonist, and a nicely put together story. Like the original show, I'm probably not going to remember it in about ten years down the line. As for the here and now, I'm glad I took the time to watch something so much more than BEARable.
(Now if only we got that Amazing World of Gumball movie. GET ON IT CARTOON NETWORK!)

RYAN: This week on Buzzfeed Unsolved True Crime, we take a look at the town of Woodshore, Washington, home to one of the nicest resorts in the country.
SHANE: Oh, yay, something pleasant for once.
RYAN: Let me finish–– home to one of the nicest resorts in the country, however, behind the Pacific ocean views, lies a grizzly and surprisingly recent series of murders that have left police stumped.
SHANE: Annnnd there it is.
RYAN: ... Let's get into it.
Tumblr media
RYAN: Located off the coast of Washington, Woodshore is a small city home to about 30,000 people. It’s about a two-hour drive from Seattle. Known for its legendary resort that comprises most of the city and its employment, most people would describe the town as idyllic and quiet.  However, murky secrets lurk below.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RYAN: On February 4th of this year, Elias Peabody was last seen outside of the Rail Yard Tap, a local bar. For two whole weeks, the police department said nothing about his disappearance, other than there were no leads. But on the morning of February 19th, local newspapers reported that his body had been found, believed to be killed on the 17th. There were no details on the suspect, and no witnesses came forward. No one knows what happened to Mr. Peabody in the two weeks that he went missing.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RYAN: Another thing worth noting about this time is that on the morning of February 9th, local law enforcement found the remains of a mutilated deer carcass on the trail. And while this may sound unrelated at first, it is worth noting that February 8th, the night before, was a full moon. This has led some local residents to believe that it might be–
SHANE: No, no, no, no. Don’t do that. Don’t go looping your other shit into this.
RYAN: Do what? All I’m saying is that there was conveniently a mutilated animal carcass found. By the reports of it, it sounded pretty uh... pretty grotesque.
SHANE: No. That’s just – you know, the circle of life. Animals being animals.
RYAN: Listen, I’m not saying it was a werewolf.
SHANE: Yes, because werewolves aren’t real.
RYAN: I don’t even believe in werewolves! I’m just saying that’s what happened. And you know, uh, most serial killers, they tend to start off with hurting animals.
SHANE: But he already kidnapped the guy.
RYAN: That’s true. It’s just something to make note of. Let’s keep going.
Tumblr media
RYAN: Just over a month later, on the morning of March 13th, a jogger found the body of a woman in these same woods. While the jogger initially thought they might be alive, paramedics declared her dead on the scene. According to the polite report, she appeared to have been pulled off the path and dragged, postmortem, before the suspect covered the body with various brush from the area. She was identified by a family member as 31 year old Nora Wentworth, a local elementary school teacher. The coroner’s report determined the cause of death to be asphyxiation and blunt force trauma to the skull. She was dead for thirty-six hours before she was found in the food. Nora was never reported missing, possibly due to the fact that schools happened to be on spring break that week.
Tumblr media
RYAN: Well, I’ll give you that one. I don’t think a– uh, a second grader killed her.
SHANE: Also, hold on. She’d been dead thirty-six hours and the jogger who found her thought that she was still alive? What about decomposition?
RYAN: I don’t know, I mean, I didn’t talk to them. They probably didn’t get that close.
SHANE: What about the smell?
RYAN: Maybe they thought it was nature.
SHANE: Nature? No, no. You know what? The jogger did it. Case closed.
RYAN: That’s not how it works, dude. I mean, c’mon. Resort town. These people are probably you know, just going about their business, la di da, not thinking too much about any of it. They probably assumed there was no way they were finding another dead body in Woodshore.
SHANE: But there’d already been one murder!
RYAN: Yeah, well, nowhere’s perfect. I don’t know, dude, but I think if it was the jogger, they’d have found out by now. Finding the body always makes you a prime suspect.
SHANE: Uh-huh. Sure. What are the police doing, anyway? Sitting back, eating some donuts like those small town cops do, hoping there’s not a third?
RYAN: Well, they’re probably hoping that, yeah. That brings me to my next point.
Tumblr media
RYAN: The day after the 2nd murder, the head detective on the case, Detective Hannah Zhang, suggested a town curfew and that people not be alone after day. Mayor Combs agreed to this, and the recommendation was published in the newspaper, along with information about the murder. However, after the case, Detective Zhang declined to make any kind of public comment about the case or how it was proceeding.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
RYAN:  What’s also interesting about this is that, after the first case, the police department reacted similarly. And, more noteworthy, after the animal attack–
SHANE: Not this shit again.
RYAN: Yes. After the animal attack, they sent out advice about how to go in the woods without upsetting wildlife. Isn’t it interesting how they have the same level of response about both events? I mean – now multiple people being murdered, compared to an animal.
SHANE: I mean, listen, you said this was a resort town. Chances are, they just don’t want to talk about it so that they can avoid putting a dent in their reputation. It doesn’t have to be a big deal. That’s just how small towns are.
RYAN: That’s not just how small towns are. That’s shady!
SHANE: It’s not that shady. C’mon, it’s the popo.
RYAN: That’s a terrible excuse. But, unfortunately for this small town, the lack of answers coming from the police department ultimately ended up with more harm.
Tumblr media
RYAN: On April 2nd, only two months ago, Woodshore officers responded to a distress call. Upon arrival, the officers found a young adult who was barely responsive and suffering from extensive wounds to the skull and abdomen. Defensive wounds were also visible, according to paramedics. The phone that was used to make the call was later found at the scene. the young adult was declared dead on arrival at the Woodshore hospital and identified by family members as Orion Rubinstein, a twenty-two year old college student, who had last been seen only hours prior in the family’s suite at the resort.
Tumblr media
RYAN: Do you want this guy to murder you?
SHANE: I’d like him to try, yes. I think that would make some great footage. Besides, we obviously wouldn’t be filming this episode if he killed me. I’d be doing viral on Twitter. And you uh, you’d probably be... sobbing and trying to contact my ghost.
RYAN: Yeah, I think I would try to contact your ghost.
SHANE: And you would fail. Because ghosts aren’t real.
RYAN: Not true, but I digress. Obviously, we did get a chance to go to Woodshore in the beginning of May, and neither one of us was murdered. But could we have conceivably crossed paths with a murderer? Definitely. Now would be a good time for that montage...
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
RYAN: It is a beautiful town.
SHANE: Lovely town. Absolutely lovely.
RYAN: Unfortunately, we haven’t quite covered everything sketchy that’s happened in Woodshore in the last year.
SHANE: Wait, really?
RYAN: Really. And uh... you’re really going to hate this one.
SHANE: Oh boy.
Tumblr media
RYAN: On the morning of April 22nd, three weeks after the murder of Orion Rubenstein, the most grisly murder yet occurred. The evidence is both shocking yet underwhelming in what it reveals – there were no significant fingerprints or DNA evidence to be found. While authorities have not released this information publicly, an informant from inside the department has revealed that the victim’s cause of death was a wound to the neck and significant blood loss. The wound in question was two distinct punctures, and while the victim was drained of half of his body’s blood, only a few drops were found at the scene.
The victim was the notorious Augustus Gallagher, a forty-one year old loan shark. He had a history of settling lawsuits for fraud and embezzlement, and has been connected to some of Woodshore’s more unsavory characters, including potentially a drug ring. While this connection has never been proven beyond a shadow of a doubt, it raises some serious questions about Mr. Gallagher… and the motives of the Washington Night Stalker.
Tumblr media
SHANE: The Washington Night Stalker. Every good serial killer needs a name.
RYAN: So you’re not going to comment on the fact that the victim had two puncture wounds in his neck and was drained of blood? All you care about is the name?
SHANE: Yeah, I mean, it’s a cool name.
RYAN: Uh-huh.
SHANE: And vampires obviously aren’t real.
RYAN: See, I agree with you there. I don’t think they’re real. But, it’s interesting that between Gallagher’s murder, and the whole full moon thing, there’s a little... a little drop of vampires and werewolves in this town.
SHANE: But it doesn’t mean anything because none of that crap is real.
RYAN: Right, right.
SHANE: Well, this is a weird feeling. Four murders this year and the police have got, what? Nothing?
RYAN: Nada.
SHANE: Wow.
RYAN: Yeah. In this case, the police has said so little about the actual case and suspects surrounding it, just that they apparently have significant leads. But, nothing’s actually come from any of this. With four murders under its belt, and maybe something a little more savory going on inside of Woodshore, this resort-style town might not be as idyllic as it appears on the surface.
But for now, this case will remain... Unsolved.

LONG POST, JURASSIC WORLD: BATTLE AT BIG ROCK DISCUSSION.
The new 8-minute long Jurassic World short film, Battle at Big Rock, was fantastic, and I highly recommend you check it out if you haven't already. It had the perfect amount of wonder, terror, tension, and dinosaur action.
The CGI looked great, as did the designs of the Nasutoceratops and Allosaurus. Always nice to get a new dinosaur on screen as is the case with the Nasuto, and the design of the adult Allo is a massive improvement over the juvenile from Fallen Kingdom. Nice to see they maintained the design of the Allo from Jurassic World: Evolution (which is itself obviously based on the famous Papo figure which pretty much every depiction of Allosaurus in recent years has been based on lol)
If I had any complaints at all, I wasn't crazy about the ending. The tiny, 8 year old little girl wielding a crossbow driving away a fully grown Allosaurus with it seems kinda dumb. Not as dumb as killing a Velociraptor with gymnastics, but still. Would've preferred it be the neighbor guy who actually owned the crossbow to shoot the Allo, and I would've loved if the whole little camper community, upon seeing the attack, had poured out as a group, armed with whatever they could get their hands on, and standing together, making noise, intimidating and driving the Allo away.
From a story perspective, it's great setup for Jurassic World 3. The world building this little 8 minute short manages is substantial. Taking place a year after the events of Fallen Kingdom, through dialogue we learn that the public, aware that dinosaurs now roam the wilds of California, have precautions in place in case of a dinosaur encounter. The park ranger at Big Rock is said to have advised visitors to remain calm and simply wait for the animals to leave. Indeed the arrival of the Nasutoceratops family into the campsite and rummaging through food is handled very much like the arrival of a bear or other more conventional forest wildlife. The little girl says a dinosaur was spotted near her school, and says they are migrating. And the parents mention hearing about "what happened up north". Whether this is in reference to the dinosaurs escape from Lockwood Manor, or perhaps Rexy's waltzing into a zoo in broad open daylight, isn't clear. Its a fascinating look at how modern society might actually react to and interact with dinosaurs in the modern day.
I predict this incident will likely act as a catalyst for the events of the next film. Dialogue suggests that up until this point there haven't been any major incidents between man and dinosaur since the events of Fallen Kingdom, and that the public has largely been treating any interactions with dinosaurs as they would any other potentially dangerous wildlife. But a skirmish between two large and dangerous dinosaur species and a violent attack on a family in the middle of a populated campground is likely to provoke a response. And a series of short viral video style clips shown during the end credits show further evidence of the dangers of this new "Jurassic World": A small child being chased around in a yard by a group of Compsognathus. Wedding doves being released at a wedding only to be snatched out of the air by a Pteranodon. A car swerving off the road and over the side of a cliff to avoid a Stegosaurus crossing the road. Clearly humanity's run ins with dinosaurs are becoming more dangerous, and the Battle at Big Rock will likely be a turning point where something has to be done. And as we saw at the end of Fallen Kingdom, the power to clone dinosaurs has now gone global, so this is likely not a problem faced only by the residents of Northern California. I'm very interested to see where the story goes in JW3, and if Battle at Big Rock is any indication of what's to come, then I'm very excited for what comes next.

Slavery and Genocide Have No Edges
I shared the following set of materials at the Walter Rodney Symposium at Johns Hopkins University last Friday. I am trying to work through something impossible–what it means to be Diaspora and witness to uprising, what it means to be Diaspora and witness to the calculated extermination of a people. A black spot on a map. A warehouse full of supplies, full of life, in the midst of compounded death. The screams of bones so loud multiple excavations and a generation later the bones still speak.
Next week in #BlackWorldSeminar we are reading Tiffany Lethabo King’s devastating (in the best, most important ways) text The Black Shoals: Offshore Formations of Black and Native Studies and her words (“slavery and genocide have no edges”) echoes a refrain along my spine.
There is line to be drawn from histories of Africa, histories of slavery and diaspora, and the opening of new possibilities for charting the world to come. The shoal offers something to all of us, Black and Native for certain, but for those of us in the Caribbean, where the water has so many meanings and so much power to remember histories of enslavement and washes away memories in the wake of empire, the shoal may be a node on this new world map that can bring us closer to freedom. This was the line I tried to draw to Rodney–not just a celebration of his life and work, but an acknowledgement that he was already mapping these ties, across the Caribbean, between the United States and the Caribbean, between both and the Global South–and he did it through history.
In other words, these borders mean nothing. And everything.

“Human catastrophe leaves a mark, a black spot in time and space. On 20 September 2017, when Hurricane María made landfall on the island, the site of Christopher Columbus’s second so-called discovery and the birthplace of the New World, it swept bridges off their supports, tore leaves off the trees in the rainforest, drove wildlife into migration or into hiding. The electrical grid, already a battered, colonial infrastructure, fell to pieces, as did the water and sewage systems and other public services. San Juan, the capital, el santo, the herald of Spanish empire, bowed and flailed in Guabancex’s onslaught until, finally, darkness reigned.2
“But blackness in the blackened spaces hit hardest by Hurricane María disappeared in the aftermath. In Carolina and Loíza, towns in the constellation near San Juan, that some one-fifth to three-quarters of the population (respectively) described itself as of African descent went without mention in the aftermath of the storm. In Poncé, which did not restore electricity to all its residents until August 2018—328 days after the storm—between 10 and 20 percent described themselves as black.3 Indigenous spaces suffered similar disappearances. Utuado, which for generations claimed indigenous patrimony on the island and is the home of Caguana Indigenous Ceremonial Park, barely rated a mention in mainstream news generated by the storm. Nor does Utuado, a region where even before the storm running water and electricity were privileges not rights, appear in the satellite image. “Memory,” poet Natasha Trethaway writes, “dulls the lash / for the master, sharpens it for the slave.”4 And few cared to remember that the chronic dispossession faced by black and indigenous spaces on the island would leave them most vulnerable and most in need after the storm.
“At the same time, somatic blackness and nonwhiteness saturated screens and devices as images of Puerto Ricans suffering under palm trees appeared on televisions and computers, spread by mainstream media. Blackness appeared in other ways as well, somewhere underneath the biopolitical and ocular. Tapping into a lexicon of Caribbean women, children, and men as both childlike and bestial, President Donald Trump derisively threw paper towels at relief workers on his visit to the island, treating them in the words of one observer, “like dogs.”6 On the island itself, the federal and local police-military-surveillance apparatus that preoccupied itself with the war on drugs justified harassment of black islanders, shifted after the storm. Police wasted no time implementing and enforcing a curfew, including breaking up gathering spaces of dance and play—the kind that inevitably erupt when there is one working generator in a neighborhood and the night is long, hot, and dark. And in breaking news about the storm’s impact, social media queries circulated desperately and especially among Puerto Ricans in the United States searching for incommunicado kin; blackness appeared in the loss and mourning of a diaspora for its people—for those lost beneath the sea…”

“The records of the slaveowners are far more clear. The giant chemical complex, which Formosa is calling the Sunshine Project, is to be built on several former plantations, including Acadia, whose long series of white owners is traceable through land use records, and Buena Vista, where the number of hogs that Benjamin Winchester and his wife, Carmelite Constant Winchester, raised in the 1840s was carefully documented (between 600 and 700).” Sharon Lavigne, center, the director of RISE St. James, sits with her brother, Milton Cayette Jr., at Louisiana’s Department of Environmental Quality’s public hearing on whether to approve the 15 air permits for Taiwanese company Formosa Plastics in Vacherie, La., on July 9, 2019. “When construction on the Bonnet Carré Spillway began in 1929, the Army Corps of Engineers demolished Montz to make room for the flood plain. Homes, churches, and the two former plantation cemeteries were plowed under. These churches—Good Hope Baptist Church in Norco and Providence Baptist Church in Montz—were relocated during spillway construction, and remain open today. As for the cemeteries, residents of Montz and Norco informed project administrators and non-local workers of the cemeteries and their locations during construction. One former USACE employee recounts that the USACE had purchased a small plot of land, the site of a present day playground, to re-inter the deceased. This was never done, and there is no government record of provisions for the cemeteries during construction.” Aerial view of Bonnet Carré Spillway flowing into Lake Ponchartrain, courtesy of The Historic New Orleans Collection, gift of Dode Platou, 1976.6.1
