I'm loving the relationship between the Shen brothers in My Sassy Princess. Shen Yu pretends to be a worldly dandy with little care for anything. Shen Yan's mask is that of a merciless, emotionless killer. But, boy, do they care, both for the women they love and for each other. And when they fight side by side? Drama rec masterlist | Drama rant thread (beware of spoilers)

So, I watched this without doing any rants, as it was a drama where I just wanted to turn off my head and not think too much about what was happening. I have actually tried watching it once before and gave up on it, but then it started showing up all over my YouTube shorts, so I decided to give it another chance.

I've seen both a lot of good and a lot of bad things about this drama - it seems you either absolutely love it or hate it. I'm somewhere in the middle, I guess.

It's cute and fluffy overall. Gives some decent commentary about being a girl in a male dominated sports, and also some pretty good comments on the relationship between fans and idols - and the boundaries that often end up being broken. There is a line that should never be crossed, and they do a good job showing how it can affect the idols when they are crossed anyway. Nothing groundbreaking, but not every drama has to be.

The graphics for the game scenes are really cool, and I liked watching that a lot. Wish they had done that just a tiny bit more, but I bet it was expensive.

I do have to say - I don't know if it's the actual lines or the Netflix subtitles, but a lot of the drama felt stiff and impersonal. Zero emotion at all, and sometimes it didn't even make sense. The subtitles also used the word r*tard a lot... which, is that not a slur? It felt very iffy to me.

The couples don't really seem to communicate that much, and I have to admit that the chemistry wasn't really all there for any of them. They had their cute moments, sure, but it's not the kind of relationship I would want.

So yeah, I don't hate this at all - I was certainly entertained and once I got started again, I did watch it all pretty fast. But it's not a fave drama of mine either, and I probably won't rewatch.

I'm also attempting The Moon Brightens For You again (I quit this one previously for the same reason as The Golden Eyes and just never got back to it once I had a Viki account). They don't waste any time setting up the male lead's tragic backstory/motivation which is nice. But the female lead is a moron -like, I'm almost sorry for calling the immortals from Chongzi morons because that puts them in the same category as this nincompoop and I'm not sure anyone deserves that. And her whole personality is being naughty. I can tolerate a little scampishness but not someone being bad for no other reason than they can get away with it. It's exhausting, it's infuriating. And like there's nothing else to her personality. I know it's only one ep so far but give me something! So I don't know how much of her I can take.

The plus side is that Merxat Yalkun appears in the first episode so I feel like my time isn't completely wasted.

The Golden Eyes is crawling pacing-wise now, btw. Curiosity and Zhang Yixing's dimple are keeping me going but it has a lot of fat that could have been trimmed. The only thing keeping me from watching on 1.5 speed is being too lazy to change the settings. I suggest having something to do with your hands while watching this one, at the very least.

One of my fav scenes in Demon Girl is when You Tong is being very dramatic and A-Xiang asks him:

Naturally, A-Xiang runs after him but it takes him a while to find his master, who in the meantime went through a spiritual transformation...

Merxat Yalkun - this absolutely cutie pie peach of a man

aka the man zhehan shared the following moment with in merxat's very first drama (to have aired) Cosmetology High

aka the man who would be the demon boy if the world were different and we were allowed to have demon boy instead of demon girl because let's face it You Tong (Merxat Yalkun) and Ming Xia are A+++++ because Ming Xia is too stupid to save the day so You Tong has to constantly save the day instead therefore saving both the heroine and Ming Xia and honestly i had no idea what genre drama i was watching for half the time

with You Tong being high camp and Ming Xia being the damsel in distress - by American standards they are very queer coded - also if you don't ascribe to that thinking then here's this: You Tong solves all of Ming Xia's little detective cases 🥺🥺🥺 i haven't seen the ending but i am convinced that it ends with the three of them in a 2 demon + 1 pretty human slave polycule

Also here is them sharing in the classic repressed queer trope: intimacy via a shared lover (Yunxi and Demon Girl)
