I just finished watching all the available episodes of The Apothecary Diaries, and I have to say that it surprised me!
The premise of an apothecary working for the emperor's consorts and solving medical mysteries is already a gun one, but the execution really elevated the concept past entertaining romcom to genuinely fantastic storytelling. It's not revolutionary, but it's certainly deeply endearing, and I really enjoyed how it found a balance between lighthearted comedy and acknowledging the awful aspects of sex work and being a woman/lower class in a world where neither are valued. It doesn't explore the darker side in detail, at least not so far, but it still does a fantastic job in making the horrible parts feel like a real part of the setting while still making the choice to focus on the women's joy even when faced with hard situations. I guess I just appreciate these things being openly discussed without immediately having it be a psychological story about dealing with trauma?
The characters are also soo good, and while most lack depth (its been nine episodes, so for a cast this big, that can be excused), usually their schtick is strong enough that it can easily carry their appearances. You also get the sense that while a lot of these characters do fill out comedic roles/archetypes, there's a lot more going on beneath the surface. Their schtick is fun, but its not all they have, its just there to help the audience familiarize themselves and bond with the charcaters while their entire personality is unearthed. The entire cast is genuinely absolutely delightful and reasonable and feel incredibly real while also being really funny.
The romance portion is also really really fantastic. Both Maomao and Jinshi are hilarious little freaks, and their dynamic is so fun to watch. Maomao is such a good take on the cold, blunt, genius character, who is socially challenged but very far from frigid. She's practical and logical while also keeping a very strong emotional core founded in empathy and genuine care for the people around her. Her obsession with poison is also pulling triple duty, as it 1) serves to break her cold facade and provides comic relief in the form of an ongoing gag, 2) gives the reader a strong understanding of her guiding motives/desires, and 3)gives her role as a medical investigator narrative justification. Of course she'd know what was used to poison someone, that's her whole thing! Jinshi himself is a counterpart to Maomao's colder tendencies, being very clingy and emotional. This show is not afraid of making him a pathetic little obsessed man, and it's all the better for him. Unlike other possesive and obsessed male leads, Jinshi manages to mostly stay away from the creep factor by being so uttely pathetic and cringe that he never really comes across as an actual threat. Couple that with him actually being very respectful of Maomao, only engaging in light flirting, and how he never actually wants to change her (most rapey MLs try to break the FL out of their feisty charcater or demean her for it while showing her how they're more powerful), and Jinshi makes for a very good love interest that also feels like a very safe comfortable person, which I feel matches the tone of the show very well. He's also as much of a freak as Maomao ("she wants to crush me like a bug <3333🥰🥰🥰), so they're very well matched there, too. He's such a petty loser, and that makes him a stronger character.
The story seems to be ramping up, and while I don't think it'll ever lose the lighthearted tone, I'm excited about how it already seems to promise a more in-depth exploration of the world it's set up the scaffolding for. For what it's worth, I also think the show has done a very good job at making the world feel expansive and mysterious, while also balancing that wholesomeness, which for a show centered around sex workers is quite the feat.
Anyways, long story short, I think the nine episodes that are out so far are really great, and the story thrives through how utterly endering it is. I am charmed by the world and the characters and what the plot has promised us, and while I don't expect it to revolutionize anime or whatever, it's still a masterclass in narrative shorthand and the act of balancing its heavy themes, especially when it comes to the characters themselves. There's so many of them that are so fun and memorable that I didn't mention, but who absolutely deserve their own posts, and that's only nine episoded into a comedy show, which I think goes to show how strong of a start this series has. Overall, I'd rate the show so far an 8/10, and I'm really excited to see what will come from the next 15 episodes.

I think Nanyin royalty AU will be a wild power struggle. Full of cutthroat unhinged conspiracy and backstabbing left and right.
1. There is the mild mannered and quite sickly crown prince Li Xiangxian. But no, this is not about him, let that man enjoy his peace.
2. This is about the martial arts genius second prince, Li Xiangyi. That typical imperial brother who lead jurisdiction part of the palace, and basically the strongest fortress in front of the well-loved crown prince.
3. Rumor has said Li Xiangyi learn from the elusive master Qi Mushan since the very young age and inherited the famous yangzhouman.
4. The crown prince, true to his soft hearted nature, once saved a young kid and bring him back to be his little brother study partner. That kid will grown up as Shan Gudao
5. On the side, as a cousin part of the throne is the Jiao family who acted as a door keeper to Nanyin more mystical artefact. The daughter of that family is one who born with ambition to rule and eyes for the crown. She play so many tangled thread behind the palace wall.
6. Shan Gudao is someone that has been planted by that family to keep an eye about the inner court. Greed will blown his ego out of proportion and later he will joined Jiao Liqiao in her coup.
7. Qiao Wanmian is an administrative agent that work under Li Xiangyi. A capable woman that everyone think will marry in as a princess consort. But she know better than to step into court politic.
8. The palace actually in correspondence with Tianji Hall about their mechanism and exchanging knowledge about trap room blue print. The second prince find their young master a cute kid and take a liking to him but unable to get too close because He Xiaohui kept him in a polite (wary) distance.
9. The Jiao family regularly purchasing teenager from Di Fortress under the palace order to make a soldiers. Unbeknown to the inner court, only half the kid ended up in the military camp while the other half being used as a lab rat for the new technique they developed.
10. Di Feisheng is one of those that climb high enough to be stationed practically as a bodyguard for Li Xiangyi. But its not like Li Xiangyi need a bodyguard at first so he make Di Feisheng as his sparring partner more often than not.
11. Somewhere along that, the comfortable nickname of A-Fei begin to stick.
12. Sometimes when investigating near the border, where people doesn't really care of fear the court, Li Xiangyi will use the name Lianhua, a mere travelling merchant with his servant A-Fei (who always scare the shit out everyone with his glare).
13. Li Xiangyi with all his brilliance, once trust people so easily with naive innocence to see good. Thus unable to sniff the first step of rebellion brewing near the inner court.
14. The height of the conflict started when Yun Biqiu, one of Li Xiangyi men, fall for the sweet tongue of the Princess. From there on, poison and slander flying around here and there in a broad daylight. Creating chaos from the inside. A first step into the descend of the dynasty.
15. Fang Duobing left his wheelchair behind and grow stronger. He start to exchange a monthly secret letter with the second prince.
16. The flag of rebellion reach their highest when the fight occur in the inner palace. Many live lost that day and the second prince gone missing after poisoned by his own subordinate.
17. Di Feisheng got tangled up in the neatly orchestrated spot to make him look like he is on Jiao Liqiao side. A small mercy, said the princess, because I want him.
18. Li Xiangyi unfortunately believe that.
19. It is with a burning rage and thirst for revenge a letter came into Di Feisheng hand. And he know enough of his prince penmanship to rush as fast as a lightning to the east sea. He came to retrive and protect the prince. Not knowing the man will ask for his head. Nor expect the prince will not see where his loyalty has been placed long ago.
20. Only weeks later, Tianji Hall will receive the news and proceed to cut ties with the new court. Fang Duobing never receive that month reply from Li Xiangyi.
--
00. This maybe end in the east sea to close the chapter of power struggle and start a new book of quack doctor Li Lianhua from Jianghu. Who knows. Certainly not the people in Nanyin. Not Jiao Liqiao either.

My random rambling regarding Keliyete Hailan comeback! Scene
Tumblr media
She was a sewing maid before you raped her, genius, of course she would know things about sewing 🙃
Tumblr media
How to seduce your concubine ala Qianlong
(And besides that, of course you would never know because:
1. You wanted her to unalive herself after you raped her by ignoring her even though you took her virginity by force (in their era, rape victims usually got victim blame)
2.Ruyi saved her and asked you to take Hailan as a concubine
3.Ruyi cares for her, she even knows what is Hailan favourite foods
4.Hailan most of the time avoided you like my sister avoided cockroaches
5.You are not RUYI)
Tumblr media
Here: She gives you the damn answer about her (if you are smart enough, Qianlong, she already tell you the first hint, she is going to be a good actress just like the harem top players)
Tumblr media
NOPE. NADA. Why a lot of memories you can think and remember about her, (Maybe the time she defended Ruyi during Second Class Female Attendant Mei's cosmetic poisoning mini arc, even though she still hurt by Noble Consort Hui's punishments) you remember about the time you raped her?!
(How to seduce your concubine ala Qianlong 🙃🙃🙃🙃)
Tumblr media
This is next scene after the previous scene and Hailan shakes her head when Qianlong said this (I am sure Hailan just waiting the right time to throttle you alive)

Random Hanadan/BoF Shitpost
After hearing that Love in Flames of War, a republican era cdrama had Hana Yori Dango/Boys Over Flowers/ Meteor Garden/ F4 vibes... but eventually failed to deliver on that front I rambled at @dangermousie that, actually, we SHOULD have a Hanadan version of every genre of cdrama.
Tumblr media
No...wait...I’m joking...but also not. My reasoning for this is solid:
 1) No matter what you thing of Hanadan and all it’s objectively toxic and dated glory, you can’t deny it is a hallmark in the history of shoujo manga/anime/asian drama/ live action adaptation/remake pumping machine. It paved the way for all the ItaKiss, Fated to Love You, etc...and it is still to this day a nostalgia magnet for an easy cash grab with each remake (also the latest one might be the best lol).
 2) *Surrender by Cheaptricks plays in the background, talks in “there is no war in ba sing se” mode* There are no new ideas in media. Everything is a sequel, prequel, remake, reboot, retelling, soft reboot, parody, homage, the same thing over and over again but call it by another name (it’s still a rose, yeah Shakespeare, you’re a genius, congrats!).
 3) Let’s face it. Dramaland is going through the lowest of lows. Cdramas are bad and boring, Kdramas are scarce and boring and Jdramas are 10 ep cute little intros to the story you really wanna see that’s about to begin...at the end of ep10, last episode, no 2nd season. So, they might as well try Every Hanadan Set Everywhere all at Once.
So, without further ado, introducing...every genre of Cdrama Hanadan (with crazy plot eggs for some and none for others bc I say so):
Starting with contemporary…
1)      Reverse hanadan where the fl is a rich asshole and the ml a poor little meow meow
2)      Time loop hanadan
3)      Modern Fantasy hanadan (sort of like the beginning of Bulgasal but more petty and less angsty lol)
4)      Transmigration low budget web drama romcom hanadan
5)      *barfs* modern office corporate romance hanadan
6)      *barfs again* gaming hanadan
7)      Sports hanadan (aka if HanaKimi wasn’t genderbender or cute but toxic instead)
8)      Coming of Age/ Youth to Adult Married life Hanadan
Syke! Too late! There is already an OG classic toxic Hanadan of this Genre, it’s called Itazura na Kiss (and it’s my guilty pleasure, my personal hanadan lol)
9)      Ice sports hanadan....yesss...get gory with the bullying with ice skating blades muahahaha. The red card locks her on the ice rink and they oil the railings/plexiglass around it so she can't even climb out and she nearly freezes to death. They rope her to the back of a zamboni and drag her through the ice. While she is trapped on the ice rink, they rig a bucket of water to fall over her so she freezes faster.
Now for the period dramas…
10)   Republican Era hanadan
They could use the boat scene ending from the finale of the anime as a convenient plotpoint to escape the republican era without dying in the republican turmoil. "Oh, they just reunited dramatically on a boat post amnesia and went abroad together and missed all the political fatal shit and lived happily ever after. Their kids returned to China and lived happily under the great CCP rule (/s)!
11)   Palace hanadan
It’s hanadan meets legend of Ruyi where he is the Crown Prince but the Empress Dowager holds all the power and on some humiliation move has him take a barbarian slave as a concubine...and the red card is that it's open season on her from every noble or regular consort of his harem and his friends in the court...all is fair the only rule is she cannot be murdered, everything else is fair game. So she is beating to the brink of death, poisoned daily with agonizing pills only to be given antidotes at the last minute, drowned, flayed, etc.
12)   Wuxia hanadan. Similar. Dude is the leader of the jianghu, declares her a demon bc she offended him and has all the pretentious righteous sects go after her with agonizing Gus pushed on her body, plenty of chains, kebab her in multiple ways with stakes in torture chambers to cast out the evil.
13)   BL Wuxia hanadan. (this one is just here by popular demand. Mine. No, I will not elaborate on that).
14)   And at last…my personal favorite….drum rolls… Xianxia hanadan (here is the plot):
She spilled peach wine on his cloud robes once by accident before the Great Heaven's Ceremony so he scribed her name carelessly on the stone of the doomed as petty revenge hoping she'd get some bad karma. But at the time the Demon Overlord was fighting the Lord of Fate and the Dijun on Kunlun and as they made their final strike the demon overlord turned into a cloud of heavy miasma that swirled away swiftly for miles and landed on the stone of the doomed. Hence, for the next 10.000 years the calamities and heavenly tribulations of every god were transferred into the unlucky FL.
In the first 300 years, the gods were unsure of what was happening, but soon word spread of a small menial demigoddess who seemed to be getting an abnormal amount of calamities and trials and yet never ascended into a higher level god. But other gods were getting past their fated tribulations dates without experiencing the event itself but still ascending afterwards. Soon this bizarre phenomenon was being gossiped throughout all the heavenly realms and the gods were rushing to get their hands on every magical item capable of moving forward their tribulation dates... After all, who knew how long this free meal would last? So it follows that our female lead spent the next 10.000 overbooked from torturing calamity to the next without a break or a reward.
Our cloud cloaked protagonist came to learn of this business about 500 years into it. It was not his intention for the karmic payback to be that harsh...but then again it was his best cloud vest that the annoying, insignificant little demigoddess had ruined...and if the consequences had been that rough, who was he to question the Great Design. He soon forgot all about it, surely none of that pesky matter would come back to bother him...
10.000 later: Our fuming fl finally had enough...after experiencing every form of dismemberment as a human, for eons, though she didn't collect an ounce of heavenly grace to ascend to higher goddess....she sure damn well accumulated enough yin to form a monumental grudge...and she would use all of that energy into one single punch for a certain cloud clothed god that would send him so high the gods would finally know what lies above the heavenly realm...not that he'd get the opportunity to tell the tale.
Tumblr media
Congrats! you made it to the end of my loooong ass ramble.
Here’s some Ice Cream...

Summary
for 《为夫体弱多病》
Tumblr media
Rong Tang had once read a novel.
The villain of the novel, Su Huaijing, was heaven’s favored child - an epitome of the trope Powerful Tragic Beauty, with the character archetype of vengeful leveling-up genius antagonist. A pity that the character ended up turning self-destructive and coming to a bad end.
And then one fine day - a transmigration - and Rong Tang ended up in this story as a sickly cannon fodder with the same given name and surname as himself. He was even bound to a Protagonist Saving System and reborn three times in total.
The first time, he stayed by the protagonist wholeheartedly, helping him avoid the schemes of all sorts of cannon fodders and villains, until he was poisoned to death. That mission failed.
The second time, he worked in parallel, assisting the protagonist while remaining in contact with the antagonist, but was killed by the protagonist with one stab of his sword. That mission was a failure too.
The third rebirth, Rong Tang thought, fuck the protagonist, your daddy’s not going to save you anymore.
So on the night when the major antagonist Su Huaijing was drugged and tied up, Rong Tang, forced this body of his that was on the verge of coughing up a bloodied lung to get up, break into the brothel room, relieve him of the effect of the drug, and to ask seriously: "Do you want to marry me?"
Su Huaijing: ?
-
Rong Tang, suffering from chronic illness difficult to treat, accompanying Su Huaijing throughout this journey, nagged incessantly by his ear every couple of days, "Don't worry, when I die, the inheritance will all be yours."
When the dust had settled on the grand scheme of things, on the eve of Su Huaijing's ascension to the throne, the mission was miraculously completed. Rong Tang was surprised and delighted, but thinking beyond that, in order to preserve the Emperor’s reputation, with nothing weighing on conscience he faked his death and ran away.
As it turns out, before he could leave the capital, the emperor's guards had the area encircled, exerting pressure, the falcons circled above, drool trailed from wolf-dogs’ maws and all the Court Officials knelt in two rows either side. The little donkey Rong Tang had bought along the way sneezed in fright.
Wearing a brilliant yellow coronation robe, the Son of Heaven came up from behind the crowd, smiling with every step he took, gazing at him as he asked tenderly, "Dear husband, are you abandoning your wife and son after having your fun?"
Rong Tang: ? You can bear children? Ah no! As a top, is it appropriate for you to be immersing yourself in the role of wife like this?
The emperor walked up to him, looking up with an upraised hand and smiled, "Come back with me; half of this world is yours."
-
Mini-theatre:
On a certain day of a certain month in a certain year, after dinner, Rong Tang laid down in the courtyard to enjoy the cool weather, making future plans with Su Huaijing as usual. "I probably only have two years left to live. When the time comes, remember to take the Longxi Estate back—" Su Huaijing poured a bowl of bitter medicine into his mouth expressionlessly.
On a certain day of a certain month in a certain year, Rong Tang had finished reading a novel and was nestled in front of a brazier to keep warm, bidding Su Huaijing a sincere farewell. "I should have not more than two months left to live. If you think the house in the west of the city is too small, in the south of the city, I’ve bought you a residence —" Su Huaijing gritted his teeth and fed him three fist-sized pills.
On a certain day of a certain month in a certain year, when lotus blossoms in the imperial garden were just right, Rong Tang sat by the bridge eating lotus flower pastries. "I may die tomorrow, you have to remember to bury me—" Su Huaijing couldn't bear it anymore and leaned over to keep his mouth occupied.
After a moment, the Emperor who was not letting any emotion show, slowly backed away and looked at his Consort: "Did I never tell you that I am the best doctor in Great Yu? If you say that again, I'll take you as a nuisance patient.”
We shall share this world, you and I; and upon these mountains and rivers we sleep together.
-

My sketch of Zhang Zhehan as Long Feiye from Legend of Yunxi. There were a lot of plot holes in this series and I didn’t like the ending, but on the whole, it was bizarrely enjoyable :)
