Monkey Man (Dir. Dev Patel)
I want to say ‘I’m speechless’, but that’s such a lie, I have so much to say.
This is truly one of the best films I have seen in a long time. It hit so many notes, so perfectly. It was captivating the entire way through, it had subtle nods (I believe) to Shantaram and John Wick. The film pulled forward very real challenges that exist in India, and held up a mirror to the savage disparity between the ruling class criminals in India and the every day man, to the corruption, sex trafficking, poverty, violence against minorities and politicians who are running the country into the ground. It went somewhere that Indian cinema doesn’t have the balls to go and it did it masterfully.
Ugh, this film was just so fucking good. And that’s to say nothing yet of the acting, which was absolutely phenomenal.
Dev Patel had murder in his eyes in the best way, and I’ve never genuinely rooted for such graphic murder in a film before, but his acting/directing/writing had me holding my breath for his character to destroy his enemies.
My absolute favourite scene though, was far more tame - with the Zakir Hussain. I still can’t quite believe it happened, it was the perfect addition to an already wonderful film.
I went into this movie blind - I did not see a second of a trailer or read a single thing online, and I’m so glad, because my jaw was on the floor from how impressed I was.
Dev Patel is a talent and I’m now going to spend the next month or so going back through all of his work. I know there’s more to come from this brilliant, brilliant mind, but in the years to come people will point to this film as a career standout for him. What better way to make a directorial debut.
It was captivating the entire way through, and just so fucking good.
Please go watch it if you can.

I don't know if this is true or not, but if you have to call your publication "Plain Truth Magazine", I will immediately assume you are lying.
Also, if you put a claim next to a photo of Zakir Naik, I will assume you are lying.
There will of course be times when these assumptions are incorrect but I'll take my chances.

Tiny Review: Monkey Man 2024. John Wick versus Narendra Modi.
Tumblr media
"I think the action genre has sometimes been abused by the system. I wanted to give it real soul, real trauma, real pain ... And I wanted to infuse it with a little bit of culture." - Dev Patel, actor, writer, director, and producer of Monkey Man.
I think this twist on the action revenge genre, away from the brainless simplicity of the John Wick era, will take getting used to.
Third gender. Systematic oppression. Charismatic leaders. Do action fans really want their action layered between such heavy themes?
Tumblr media
Monkey Man is a 2024 action thriller film directed and co-produced by Dev Patel in his directorial debut, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Paul Angunawela and John Collee. The film stars Patel, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash Tripathy, Vipin Sharma, Sikandar Kher, Adithi Kalkunte, Sobhita Dhulipala, Ashwini Kalsekar, Makarand Deshpande, Jatin Malik, and Zakir Hussain.

from: SIWOO, the fool to: ZAKIR, the poet — ( @wrvtchedhearts )
Tumblr media
in the chaos of the city that is new york, siwoo enjoys finding nooks and crannies of peace in unexpected locations. where every single chain coffee shop has a queue up front, there are still some places where finding a space to sit is not a challenge, and the coffee itself is heavenly. this is one of those cafés, and with his hand curled around a porcelain coffee cup, siwoo is content reading his book, his attention pried away every once in a while when a new patron comes inside, the telltale sound of a bell ringing above the door. it is an instance just like that when a stranger enters the café, and while siwoo would not look up again in normal circumstances, something seems off about him, an air of tension that makes siwoo's gaze linger. for good reason it seems, because the next second, he can see the way his augmentation flickers, expression morphing to one of pain, hand steadying himself on the counter as if trying not to fall. it doesn't take siwoo a second longer to jump to his feet, and he makes his way to him in a few strifes, hand reaching out but not touching just yet, not without permission. "sir- are you alright? what's wrong?"

Bohut hua Ruhaani Ishq ab ke to milna hai tumse, Gazalein nahi likhni hai chhuna hai tumko… Wo hazar baar ke padhe hue Khat ek aur baar nahi padhne hai mujhe, Mujhe apni Ungliya tumhari Hateli pe chahiye… Chum lena hai Maatha tumhara, Seene se laga lena hai tumko, Baaho mein bhar lena hai.. Bohot hua Ruhaani Ishq ab ke to milna hai tumse… Aur phone pe to bilkul baat nahi karni hai, Par tumhare kaano par se baal hataana hai aur ek chhoti si baali pehna dena hai tumko… Bicchiya, Payal, Bindi sab kuch apne haato se pehnana hai, Ab Khushbu Mehsoos nahi karni hai tumhari… Bass palko ko band hote hue aur khulte hue dekhna hai Kuch kaam batana hai tumko, Fir tumhare utthkar jaane par kalaai se pakadkar baitha dena hai tumko, Bohot hua Ruhaani Ishq ab ke to milna hai tumse… ~ Zakir Khan

Shakti, the Indian-fusion band that John McLaughlin convened 50 (!) years ago in his post-Mahavishnu Orchestra days, is back, and that virtuosic goodness is still featured by the players, including tabla superstar Zakir Hussain.
McLaughlin is now 82, playing up a storm after curing himself of career-ending arthritis(!), and, of that whole cohort of shredders that came out of fusion, he's always been, for me, the one who has played with the most taste and musicality. I mean, yeah, he can bury you with 64th notes in alternating 9/8 and 5/16 time, but he also knows how to lay back, turn down, and let quarter notes tell the story. I hope he receives his due acknowledgments while he's still with us.
