honestly reading and hearing about how hard it was to get Monkey Man made infuriates me so much
like Dev Patel is one of the most talented and hard working actors of the last 15 years studio execs should be THROWING money at him there are actors turned directors spanning the entirety of film history and it is blatant racism that him and his team had to fight so hard for a third of the support white man actors turned directors get

Monkey Man (Dir. Dev Patel)
I want to say ‘I’m speechless’, but that’s such a lie, I have so much to say.
This is truly one of the best films I have seen in a long time. It hit so many notes, so perfectly. It was captivating the entire way through, it had subtle nods (I believe) to Shantaram and John Wick. The film pulled forward very real challenges that exist in India, and held up a mirror to the savage disparity between the ruling class criminals in India and the every day man, to the corruption, sex trafficking, poverty, violence against minorities and politicians who are running the country into the ground. It went somewhere that Indian cinema doesn’t have the balls to go and it did it masterfully.
Ugh, this film was just so fucking good. And that’s to say nothing yet of the acting, which was absolutely phenomenal.
Dev Patel had murder in his eyes in the best way, and I’ve never genuinely rooted for such graphic murder in a film before, but his acting/directing/writing had me holding my breath for his character to destroy his enemies.
My absolute favourite scene though, was far more tame - with the Zakir Hussain. I still can’t quite believe it happened, it was the perfect addition to an already wonderful film.
I went into this movie blind - I did not see a second of a trailer or read a single thing online, and I’m so glad, because my jaw was on the floor from how impressed I was.
Dev Patel is a talent and I’m now going to spend the next month or so going back through all of his work. I know there’s more to come from this brilliant, brilliant mind, but in the years to come people will point to this film as a career standout for him. What better way to make a directorial debut.
It was captivating the entire way through, and just so fucking good.
Please go watch it if you can.

Charithra Chandran is ✨actual✨ sunshine
This film was entertaining.
I have to say that it felt super unforgivable, what Archie did?
Either way, had to see it for Charithra. Probably wouldn’t watch it again.

I am only three episodes in and this is already one of the best shows I have ever seen.
Nicola Coughlan is ✨brilliant✨ and I adore everything I have ever seen her in.
This is my introduction to Lydia West and I’m now going to go catch up on everything I’ve missed.
The writing is clever and hilarious. It’s almost fleabag meets derry girls and I’m obsessed.
Highly, highly recommend.

Not something I would rewatch, but I’m glad I’ve seen it.
Millie Bobby Brown is brilliant in everything she does, but this story felt a little two dimensional.
Also, not to bring everything back to Merlin (BBC) - but if a CGI dragon can look like Kilgarah, it should.

I am amazed at how I managed to avoid spoilers for this show.
I binged the entire thing last night (how else would you do it) - and even though I saw where episode 13 was going, I still cried my eyes out.
This one hurt.

When I tell you this was one of the funniest, most wholesome and ridiculously cathartic shows I’ve ever seen 🤌🏽✨
I will support anything else Kacie Anning ever creates with blind faith because of this masterpiece.

The way Tom Hardy plays his characters is absolutely unhinged, and absolutely brilliant.
I can’t say I liked this film because the story was insane, and true?! Which almost makes it worse - but it was brilliantly made and the acting was obviously incredible.
The way I only found out Emily Browning was also Australian recently has me shook, because we know home girl can act, I just didn’t know she was from home.
Watching films that make me feel, not good, is something I am new to and I have to balance it with happy things. Is this normal? I’ve just noticed that my mood gets sooo affected by what I consume. Like, it took me months to get through Peaky Blinders because it was just so heavy and disturbing.
It’s easier to take those breaks with television than film, because I hate hitting the pause button. It ruins the momentum of the film, so I avoid it as much as I can. This one was rough, and I had to take a long walk after watching it to clear my head.
Anyway, Tom Hardy can do no wrong.

I watched All of Us Strangers on Tuesday night.
It took me a while to truly digest it - to sit with it and process.
This film made me feel like my heart was in my throat, and I left the cinema with puffy, red eyes.
Andrew Scott is a stellar actor. He uses every single part of himself in every single scene. I’ve never seen anyone convey so much, so silently.
This is the first time I had seen Paul Mescal in anything, and he was truly beautiful. I can’t wait to see what he does next.
Overall, the film was incredible. But expect to be distraught.

I watched Argylle tonight.
The right gif doesn’t exist yet, and I do not have it in me to wait and update, so here’s the theatrical release poster -

My thoughts:
1. It was too American. (you know what I mean)
2. If you watch it on streaming, I can’t promise you’ll watch it through. It just keeps going. I checked my watch so many times.
3. There was a concept. It was not unique or special in any way. In fact, I’m pretty sure there’s an Amazon Prime TV series with the same/ a very similar plot line
4. There’s more than one recycled scene/ setting from Kingsman and I know there’s a whole universe attempt going on but don’t be lazy. (and let Kingsman be Kingsman)
5. Just too American.

I must’ve missed every bit of advertising for this film because I had no idea it was a musical.
Auliʻi Cravalho can singggg 👏🏽
But the songs were a lot, and I will probably never watch this again, so I’m glad I got to see it in cinema.

The Edge of Seventeen (2016)
I can’t believe I didn’t come across this film sooner.
I don’t know if I liked it, exactly, but I’m not mad that I’ve seen it.
Hailee Steinfeld is very good.
It seems like Woody Harrelson has mastered playing mentor to bratty teenage girls. His character was beautiful and reminded me of the wonderful teachers I had who didn’t judge us too harshly when we were figuring our shit out. Or starting to, at least.
The narcissistic mother - uncomfortably well done.
Overall, glad I’ve seen it. I forgot how shitty it was to be a teenager.

Next Goal Wins (2023)
This film was wholesome.
It felt a little rushed, and it felt like it oversimplified life on the pacific islands in general, but it was wholesome and sweet.
I’m glad this film exists, and I recommend this for sure, but it had potential to be more than it is.
In my post movie scrolling I came across a 2014 documentary by the same name. This story is a special one, so whether you watch the film or the documentary - it’s one to know for sure.

This movie was fucked. The year 2000 truly was an entirely different world for women.
This film is rife with sexist, chauvinist, piggish behaviour towards women. Directed by a man, written by a man - I knew before the credits rolled. The way the film couldn’t run for 5 minutes without actual sexual harassment and a modern day HR nightmare scenarios, but it was just “normal” in the 2000s makes me sick.
That said, Sandra Bullock is elite and you can see the tiny bit of Katie Ford/ Caryn Lucas’ writing coming through (which like, thank God - otherwise this film would’ve had no redeeming elements) was the girls going out for pizza and drinks. The way the “scary” calories played out to true women bonding and sharing the best memories.
It doesn’t make the film less fucked - the trope of the old woman being the evil villain? Ffs - but it does give you something to stay for.
I’m glad I stayed for it.

I have to say though, the one thought I kept having throughout was - how are you telling me this isn’t Meryl Streep?
