I'm still thinking about that post where @lgbtlunaverse talks about symbolism and then I was like "yeah I'm pretentious as fuck when it comes to all of my fic related things which is silly bc it's just fanfic" (the post is here btw it's a great post.)
And I think that like, actually, it's nice to be a little pretentious about things. It's nice to give meaning to symbolism and pick and choose what stuff goes where and what you pair with this other thing and why you chose this time of day and not another time of day and actually! talk about it! Bc I love talking about it I think it's super fun! I love getting meta about my own writing and I'd love to hear about it from other people, so beloved mutuals (and anyone else who writes and wants to play) tell me below about your favorite symbolism/motifs/reasons why you did that in x scene in your fic.
I'll start! This is from Chapter Six of the Lan Xichen/Original Female Character arranged marriage fic, where we get Some More Family History re: Ningning.
"The Zhushan Li," Yongyong says, coming to a stop in front of the closed doors of the Li Family Ancestral Hall, "was founded by Prince Heyi of the middle Tang, after he revoked his status as a prince of the court and retreated here to Zhushan to be a cultivator instead." The wind rustles through the screen curtain of jade green bamboo leaves, the sound so familiar to Lan Xichen that it registered almost as comforting. "His two older sisters are the statues here on each side of the entrance. This one," Yongyong turns to the one on the right side, "is his eldest sister, Princess Le'an Appeasing the Gods. And this one," Yongyong gestures briefly at the one on the left, "Is his second sister, Princess Yu'an Allying With Tibet." Princess Le'an's face is upturned, the sword at her jade white throat already drawing blood. Princess Yu'an's face is down turned, the tears on her jade white cheeks visible even through the red mist of her wedding veil. Lan Xichen has not read about this tragedy, did not know its form and contours, but— One sister dead to appease the gods. One sister married to a distant land.
I love parallels and the 'one looking up/one looking down' both colorless except for the red and the fact that they effectively died thing just GETS ME. But it's also the "you never escape the patriarchy no matter what kind of woman you are" type story. You can never escape it! Not if you're bold and rebellious, not if you're gentle and demure and these two women ARE really the two sides of the same coin on "well in this system, you die."
I could go on but like PLEASE tell me about YOUR meta thoughts about your fic I want to see it lets talk about it!!!

An imperial fahua ‘dragon’ jar, guan, Chenghua-Hongzhi period, late 15th century.
This exceptional jar is a very rare example of a Ming dynasty porcelain vessel decorated in the so-called fahua technique with a design of five imperial five-clawed dragons. The name fahua was coined by collectors in the 1920s[1] and can be translated as ‘designs with borders’. Fine relief lines of clay slip were applied to the surface of the ceramic item and these lines served as outlines to the design and also created bounded areas in which to apply relatively low-firing alkaline glazes of different colours. On some pieces, such as the current jar, details of elements such as the scales on dragons, the feathers on birds or the veins on leaves, were additionally incised into the body of the vessel under the glaze. This type of decoration is also sometimes referred to as the ‘cloisonné technique’, since it shares some similarities with cloisonné decoration on metal.
The technique of using raised outlines in ceramic decoration appears to have initially been used in the Yuan, or possibly even the Song, period on stoneware items from the tile-making kilns in Shanxi, and was later adopted in more refined form for use on porcelain at the Jingdezhen kilns. This decorative technique is especially associated with porcelains of the late 15th and early 16th centuries, particularly the reigns of the Hongzhi (1487-1505) and Zhengde (1505-1521) emperors. However, archaeological research has now revealed that the technique was used in rare instances at the Jingdezhen imperial kilns in the Xuande (1426-35) and Chenghua (1465-87) reigns. A dish decorated on the exterior with a design of green dragons and clouds on a yellow ground was excavated from the Xuande stratum of the Zhushan imperial kilns at Jingdezhen in 1988 and is illustrated in Xuande Imperial Porcelain excavated at Jingdezhen, Chang Foundation, Taipei, 1998, p. 78, no. 73. Even more significantly, a very similar yellow and green dragon dish with fahua decoration was also excavated from the mid-Chenghua stratum at the imperial kilns (illustrated in The Emperor’s broken china – Reconstructing Chenghua porcelain, London, 1995, p. 104, no. 142). (Fig. 1) The similarities of proportion and form between the dragons on the green and yellow dish excavated from the mid-Chenghua stratum at the imperial kilns and the dragons on the current jar raise the distinct possibility that the jar could date to the Chenghua reign.

YBF Read-Through thoughts
i understand now why this chapter was called 民惧惊之 and it hurts like hell
i like how throughout the chapter you can see the love and respect everyone in Zhushan has for Mo Li but you can not really say the same back cause there is this disconnect btw their interactions which makes sense because Mo Li is not human and cant see to fill the hole in his heart w/ the love of the others in the county but feels he need his kind to ever feel content especially since he is going to live far longer than all of them
it’s just so heartbreaking because Qin Lu worked so hard raising Mo Li and seeing how anti-social he was as a child to others and went and adopted Xiao Tang to help him socialize by giving him a little brother and then going the extra mile of teaching him to essentially take over as a psychian/doctor hoping that interaction w/ the ppl of zhushan and helping them would help break him out of his shell and see how ppl rely and care for him even if it’s just through his work
but it’s all for naught because Mo Li is not a fish he is the carp that jumped the waterfall; a dragon vein that is able to enrich his surrounding area, the real question is the white rat in the grotto he found is it going to return, the golden dragon of taijing’s importance in all of this
anyway switching btw dictionaries and mtl’ing this novel is fun and also a challenge ill probably talk more about this as i go thru the novel

Ruins identified as wall of imperial kiln plant in China's ceramic capital
NANCHANG  -- The ruins of a wall which was discovered in east China's Jiangxi Province, have been identified as a wall of an imperial kiln plant dating back to the early Ming Dynasty (1368-1644).
Archaeologists said the ruins, found at the south foot of Zhushan Mountain in Jingdezhen, China's ceramic capital, have been confirmed as the western wall of an imperial kiln plant.
Jiang Jianxin, head of the ceramic archaeology institute of Jingdezhen, said kiln protection structure and burial pits for porcelain which failed to be selected by the royal families, have also been unearthed since the excavation of the kiln plant ruins started last April. Read more.

(:dogekek:)
oh Chaya! you shouldn't have! (You know I'm an angst writer, but I'm sure I can find something fluffy for you :pikauwu:)
🌈 Share something soft/fluffy from your WIP. My main wip right now is the Lan Xichen/Original Female Character arranged marriage post canon fic for The Untamed/MDZS right now and while most of this is pretty sad et al there is this one scene from the last chapter that I feel fits the bill here :D.
"Are you sure you'll be happy here, all by yourself?" Madam Lan took the wooden fan he'd been using to manage the kitchen fire, and pulling over a stool, seated herself by the stove to help stoke the fire instead.  It was a task she did not often do, given her position in the Lan Sect, and her disinclination for cooking, and it showed, though Zhuowen made no mention of this.  Zhuowen busied himself with the tea settings while thinking it over, as he often did before replying as truthfully as he was able. "I am close enough to home that I can visit whenever I like." He turned to Madam Lan who was watching him instead of the stove fire. "A-Niang, I won't be far enough away for you to miss me that dearly."  "You'll have to forgive your mother," Madam Lan said, seemingly suddenly rueful. "After all, she is a little regretful that there were not all that many years until suddenly, even her youngest child has grown into a man and left the nest."  Lan Zhuowen, who was twenty-two years old, and had thought that twenty-two was a great age to be (and certainly an eternity in his own reckoning) was momentarily regretful that his mother felt that their relationship had changed. "Niang." He came to sit next to her and rested his head against her shoulder. "Yu'r will often come to visit you in the Cloud Recesses. It doesn't take more than an hour to scale Yushan."  At this, Madam Lan laughed. "My poor Yu'r," she said, affecting a heavier Zhushan accent than she had seriously spoken with in years to tease him, "having to climb up and down this mountain only to please his mother. He shall get no sleep from all the walking back and forth he'll have to do."  At this, Zhouwen could not help but smile. “Yu’r’s niang wouldn’t be so cruel and unreasonable as to drive him out without offering him a place to sleep at night.”  Madam Lan pinched his cheek. “I shall stuff you in your childhood bed, and see if you still fit.”  “I certainly will not.” Zhuowen had grown two cun since the last time he was able to squash himself into his childhood bed in his childhood bedroom, and he did not doubt that he would not be able to make himself fit any longer. This, he reflected, must be what growing up is like.
