Chaperone Review Slamdance 2024-A Movie That Asks Tough Questions, but Doesn't Give Many Answers
Every once in a while there will come a film where someone in said film has an identity crisis. They are treading water because they don’t know what to do in life. The movie The Worst Person In the World from a couple of years ago comes to mind. Now there is a new film with a similar premise although a bit different narratively called Chaperone. A young 29-year-old woman named Misha (Mitzi…

Some Actors Work Both Sides of a Script
Tumblr media
Jesse Eisenberg and Zoe Kazan
Credit...Robert Wright for The New York Times
By Jason Zinoman
Sept. 23, 2011
AT the end of a 90-minute conversation Jesse Eisenberg announced that what he really would like to do is write a musical. To which Zoe Kazan responded, “That’s the most impressive thing you’ve said this whole time.” Mr. Eisenberg answered back by listing other comments he had made. “Musical theater totally trumps that,” she retorted.
Ms. Kazan, 28, and Mr. Eisenberg, who will be 28 next month, trade barbs in a way that only people who run in the same circles would. These actors have known each other for years. They are both slightly built New Yorkers known for intelligent performances dramatizing eccentric anxiety. Mr. Eisenberg is more famous because of blockbuster movies like “The Social Network,” but Ms. Kazan has more experience onstage, starring most recently in the revival of “Angels in America.” But they both give the impression that they are younger than they are, of being indie even when acting in Hollywood or on Broadway. Now they have something else in common: They have each written a play that has a debut next month.
Ms. Kazan’s “We Live Here,” a dysfunctional-family drama set before a wedding, opens at Manhattan Theater Club on Oct. 12, the same day that Mr. Eisenberg’s “Asuncion” begins previews at the Cherry Lane Theater. Mr. Eisenberg stars in his comedy, a Rattlestick Playwrights Theater production, as a naïve blogger whose ideals clash with his life experience. On a recent morning they chatted with Jason Zinoman over coffee. These are excerpts from the conversation.
Q. It’s a cliché for actors to say, “I want to direct,” but less often do I hear them say, “I want to write a play.” Why did you do it?
ZOE KAZAN I always wrote. My parents are writers. It just seemed like something people did. I took a writing class in college, liked it, and my first year out of school I couldn’t get a job, so I wrote a play. I never wanted to be a playwright. I just didn’t say no to any of my interests. I don’t have any hobbies.
JESSE EISENBERG People ask me what my hobbies are in interviews, and I always say biking. But all I bike for is to get to rehearsal more quickly. I have no hobbies either.
KAZAN Way to go. I bet you and I would make fascinating dinner companions.
EISENBERG Pure narcissism. We could have separate dinners alone.
KAZAN I am my own wife.
Q. Jesse, tell me about your play.
EISENBERG It’s about a writer obsessed with big issues but who doesn’t do anything about them. I do what I like to do, explore parts of myself that I am embarrassed by. I grew up in an apolitical household. I never left the country. When I became an adult, I started traveling and became interested in politics, and I probably talked about things in a silly, ignorant way. So I explored this in myself and exaggerated it for comedic effect.
Q. How exaggerated is it? One of the main characters, the one played by you, gets mugged and then sympathizes with his attackers.
EISENBERG I was mugged one night in New York and slammed into a concrete pillar, and I did an interview where I said I completely understand why they attacked me. It was a poor, black neighborhood. Someone sent me an article saying: “You ignorant idiot. It’s more offensive to defend these people. It’s more racist to defend them.” He’s right, and that is the impetus for the first scene.
Tumblr media
Q. Jesse’s play deals with a relationship between brothers, while yours is about an equally fraught sibling relationship.
KAZAN I have a sister who I am close to. I was interested in the idea of the sister relationship in general. I wrote a first draft in fall of 2009. MTC commissioned it, and they gave me some money. When I was acting in “A Behanding [in Spokane],” I was going in five hours early and working on it there.
Q. Did Martin McDonagh [the author of “Behanding’] give feedback?
KAZAN He read it.
EISENBERG [Imitating Mr. McDonagh] How come no one gets his head sawed off in this?
KAZAN You don’t know, Jesse, you haven’t read it.
EISENBERG Listen, I read the play, but I think you left out a page where someone gets his tongue cut out and stapled to his eye.
KAZAN I guess I don’t really seek notes from a broad range of people. It’s more like we were becoming friends, and I was going early and he was like: What are you doing?
Q. Jesse, who do you give work to?
EISENBERG If I think my play is bad, I’ll send it to my mother because she only gives me compliments. If I think it’s good, jeez, I don’t know. My mom calls me every 16 minutes, and she says: “That’s great sweetie. You’re my favorite child out of the three of you. Why are you not president?”
Q. Zoe, you grew up with two screenwriters as parents.
KAZAN My parents will sit down at the dining-room table and give notes on each other’s scripts. It’s the worst thing in the world. It’s like the house is burning down. It’s awful for my sister and me.
EISENBERG You should give your script to my mother. She would be real encouraging.
KAZAN I would love that. Then maybe I would be her favorite child.
Q. Which is the biggest challenge for you as a writer: character, plot or language?
EISENBERG Aspects of each. It’s a cop-out of an answer. At each point I come to a problem with a plot point or character, it seems insurmountable. Or is it unsurmountable? Not to be surmounted? So language is my answer.
KAZAN I think action should be revealed through character, so if you have a plot problem, it’s probably a character problem. It’s fun and easy to write language, but there were things I loved that I had to get rid of because they are no longer carrying their weight.
Q. Does the fact you are actors have any impact on the amount of trust you have that your cast will find the right subtext in your lines?
Tumblr media
KAZAN My rewriting process has been a lot about taking away the explicit and letting the subtext speak for itself. Sam [Gold, who is directing the play] is pushing me to be brave in pursuit of that. I think it’s hard for an actor.
Q. One thing that struck me about both your plays is that in an age when plays are becoming more cinematic in structure, yours are not.
KAZAN We both work in film, so if we are going to write a play, why not write a play?
EISENBERG There’s something strange about theater. My characters consistently demonize elitism, but of course it’s taking place in a theater where only so many people can see it. I’ve been in silly popcorn movies — the kind of thing that as an actor you might feel embarrassed about — but those movies reach many more people. In a play you’re basically performing for rich people.
Q. Broadway was once the ultimate in success for a young dramatist. How do you think of it now?
KAZAN Broadway is different now than in our parents’ generation. The number of straight plays opening there now is so small compared to the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s. I see many more plays Off Broadway by dint of ticket price and what’s being produced. If it costs more, it has to reach a larger audience. That’s why there aren’t more risky plays on Broadway.
EISENBERG I don’t consider Broadway for us — as theatergoers. I never even consider going there to see something.
KAZAN I want to see “Book of Mormon,” but for $400? Look, [turning to Mr. Eisenberg] for 60 bucks, 65 bucks I can see your play, right?
EISENBERG $75, actually. Listen I know someone who can get you in.
KAZAN $75? I’m not going to see your play.
EISENBERG Hey, I was in a zombie movie.
Q. Zoe, you also wrote a movie called “He Loves Me” that is supposed to come out next year. What is it about?
KAZAN It’s a magic realist romantic comedy. Paul [Dano, who is her boyfriend] plays a Jonathan Safran Foer-type writer who has writer’s block. He has one big novel and can’t follow it up. He starts to dream about this girl and then magical high jinks ensue. But it’s rooted in reality and comes from my experience. I was in relationships in my late teens with much older men and always felt like a piece of clay. But when I got older, I wasn’t so fluid as a person anymore. My relationships got better but harder. I wanted to write about that.
Q. Jesse, you just finished shooting a Woody Allen movie currently titled “The Bop Decameron.” Why do actors always adopt his mannerisms when starring in his films? Is it because his humor is so influential or is it in the cadences of the lines?
EISENBERG Those two plus a third reason, which is that after each take, he’s giving you notes and his voice is so iconic and funny and specific. Its impossible not to [imitate it]. You also want to indulge fully in being in a Woody Allen movie. He would say, “Don’t be hamstrung by dialogue and say whatever you want.” And I just end up making his jokes. At one point I realized after I did a scene that I made a joke from “Manhattan.”
KAZAN Steal from the best, man.
EISENBERG Just not in front of him. Go down the block first.

i recently read strange weather in tokyo per your recommendation and oh my god!! a book has never articulated my inner dialogue and jumbled brain as well as it did! do you have any more book/song recs!?
Hello!! I am so very happy to hear that!! Hmm let us see.
Book Recs;
Almond by Won-pyung Sohn. I remember borrowing this book on Libby and never getting around to it until I had like 2 days left until the return date lol. Anyway I am glad I did end up reading it. Yunjae is my baby… you feel so many things reading his story and yet it is never portrayed the way you want it to be which makes it as enticing as it is painstaking. His and Gon’s friendship is so bittersweet and slowburn which makes the turn of events the novel takes so rewardingly emotional.
Sweet Bean Paste by Durian Sukegawa. Has similar themes to Almond, I would say. As you can most likely tell, I love love love love love human connection being written in its most intimate forms in literature. If you are like me you will enjoy this novel as well!
Significant Others by Zoe Eisenberg. I actually read this novel per Jennette McCurdy’s book recommendation lol (who is another wonderful author and person btw, her memoir I’m Glad My Mom Died left me thinking for days on my own familial relationships). Friendships are soo important and yet rarely delved into in a particularly meaningful or tasteful way to me. Female friendships especially. The older I grow and the more people whom I continue to fall out with and meet — this book does a wonderful service to detailing all of the intricacies of platonic relationships.
Maybe You Should Talk to Someone by Lori Gottlieb. I read this book on a whim. The premise of a therapist receiving therapy sounds like something the average person would probably not connect with as much but I was happily surprised to find that this book was not like that at all. I read this in one setting on a two hour train and cried at the end.
Artists/Songs;
Hanroro. Recently I have been really into Korean Rock music lol. So random but anyway. I really love her voice. Her lyrics are also very teen spirt-y but her vocals and instrumentals bring it in an entirely new form to me. I really like Mayfly, Don’t be afraid to fall and Even if you leave,
PJ Harvey. Idk how to explain this one tbh. I just like feeling sexy!!! Idk what to say. Her album Stories From The City, Stories From The Sea has been on repeat for the month of February for me..
Riize. Literally talk saxy idk. Sohee I want U.. Seunghan I miss u 😓

And then Taylor Kelly walks into the elevator.
“Oh,” she says, her eyes widening when they land on his, “you have to be fucking kidding me.”
Maybe Buck should move. Lots of actors live in New York. He could be Jesse Eisenberg’s roommate; it might be a good character-building exercise.

-65- Zombieland Double Tap
Tumblr media

Jade Tang-Taylor: 10 Years of CreativeMornings Auckland
Tumblr media
In celebration of our tenth birthday this month, chapter Founder and October speaker, Jade Tang Taylor, shared some of her favourite moments and insights from a decade of CreativeMornings in Tāmaki Makaurau.
What is a highlight or memorable moment from CreativeMornings?
SOOOO many! Let’s go with three…
1. First CreativeMornings/AKL event I ever hosted (Sep 2011) launched at Aotea Centre with original co-host Elise Sterback, and speakers; Zoe Ikin, Sam Trustum and Clem Devine, with rainbow decorated stairs and also Jacinda Ardern in attendance (who happened to be a regular CM/AKL attendee before she became Prime Minister).
Tumblr media
2. The last CreativeMornings/AKL event I ever hosted (Nov 2016) at MOTAT, with co-host, colleague, and friend Kaan Hiini and speaker; Joyce Campbell. Admittedly, it was a bittersweet emotional experience as I was pregnant and announced to the community I would be taking a step back to make room for the new “creative project” in my life, and to welcome new energy to lead the CreativeMornings/AKL community into the future!
Tumblr media
CreativeMornings community hands up, with Kaan & Jade on stage!
And 3) The Global CreativeMornings Summit (Aug 2016) in Austin Texas, USA, which I managed to sneak in just before I officially stepped back from the hosting responsibilities. It was an incredible experience to connect with a global like-minded community of generous creatives and chapter hosts from all over the world! I also had an opportunity to take Tina Roth Eisenberg (Founder of CreativeMornings) out for lunch in Brooklyn, New York to pick her brains on all things creative, community, business and #mumlife.

One of your favourite takeaways from CreativeMornings?
Food & Beverage takeaways: Midnight Baker Toast, Coffee Supreme & Antipodes Water, all who have been avid supporters of CreativeMornings over the years! TY 🙏
Speaker takeaways: This quote “Where does creative freedom come from?” by Kyra Clarke, beautifully illustrated by recent speaker Kate Hursthouse, which still resonates with me today and sits on a shelf in my home office as a daily reminder.
Tumblr media
As part of a postcard/poster series created for CreativeMornings 4th birthday
One of your own highlights in the past 10 years?
Again, SOOOOO many creative highlights… Many of which I’ll share in my upcoming talk.
That said, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have been immersed in the creative community, especially through the lens of CreativeMornings. However, my biggest and most life-changing “creative project” to date would be my feisty, independent lil human who is now four years old. And no doubt, that “project” will keep changing and challenging me creatively in a multitude of ways ;)
Tumblr media
Lil Phoenix attending her first CreativeMornings talk
What has changed in Auckland’s (or NZ’s) creative sector in the past 10 (or thereabout)  years?
Hmmm such an interesting question… Admittedly, I feel like I’ve unintentionally moved away from the creative, design and arts sector a little and more recently leaned into a more strategic design practice in the social, public and community sector.
Upon reflection, from my previous roles working at a large Philanthropic organisation… There's a sense that less funding is available for the creative/arts sector, and more funding for the social sector. And of course more recently, these financial challenges are exacerbated in times of COVID-19 pandemic in the arts, theatre, events production and wider creative industry.
However, I feel that there’s a real need to bring those two sectors closer together in the future. If we’re ever to solve some of these complex “wicked” problems, we’re going to need new creative ways of working, of doing, and of being.
One thing you’d like to see in the next 10 years?

movie recommendations from me, a movie lover
disclaimer: i do not have exceptional taste. i don’t give a shit if a movie has 5 stars or 1. i’m not picky about rom coms or comedy movies or shit like that. if a movie is enjoyable, it’s enjoyable. that’s it.
contents:
rom coms
action movies
real life/documentary movies
women friendship centric movies
animated movies
female protagonists
rom-coms
1. what if
it’s a bit of an odd movie. it has daniel radcliffe and zoe kazan and it’s just a fun, lighthearted rom com that doesn’t really ask you to do much. it has adam driver and mackenzie davis and it’s just generally a fun movie.
2. 27 dresses
this movie sort of skirts the whole rom-com genre, in my opinion. it’s fun and semi-serious and deals a lot with family in a positive way. i’ve watched it dozens of times. it’s very enjoyable.
3. the big sick
i don’t love this movie like other people do, but it is generally fun and enjoyable and more interesting than the average rom-com, so. it’s worth the watch. it deals with family, specifically south-asian families, and arranged marriages and interracial relationships and illness, but it’s just a lovely movie.
4. friends with benefits
mila kunis. this is just a nice, fun movie that makes me laugh. it’s not anything extraordinary, but it is lovely and sweet and there are some nice scenes of my hometown. it’s a movie about sort of defying expectation, and i think that’s really nice.
5. set it up
lucy liu. do i need to say more??? okay but no, this movie is generally just super fun, and it totally takes advantage of the whole “new york city” thing. it’s fun and lovely and it has this important discussion of morality. it’s also just really cute and i think that’s a totally valid reason to watch it.
action movies
1. mission impossible, rogue nation
the movie has a few plot holes, but aside from that, it’s just a fucking great movie. it’s about spies and subterfuge and it’s just so fucking fun and interesting and i’ve watched it multiple times because it’s just really fucking enjoyable.
2. ocean’s 11 and ocean’s 13
ocean’s 11 is possibly the greatest thief movie ever. and i don’t say that lightly. it’s fucking so brilliant. the cast alone. brad pitt. george clooney. julia roberts. matt damon. it’s so fucking good. i’ve watched this movie like 20 times. it’s so. fucking. good. do yourself a favor and watch it. (but don’t watch ocean’s 12 it’s really not worth it)
3. the martian
i’m not sure if this counts as an “action” movie, but it makes me laugh and cry. it’s fun and sad without ever being overwhelming and it’s just a very very very well done movie.
4.  the hurt locker
the hurt locker is a war movie, so that’s just an fyi. it’s fucking brilliant. it’s really fucking brilliant. it also has like 3 marvel actors in it, but before they got really famous, so. it was directed by a female director, and it’s just. it’s so good. the hurt locker is one of those movies that you watch once and never, ever forget. it’s a bit graphic, but it won 6 fucking oscars, and it deserves every single one.
5. now you see me, one and two
honestly, as a franchise, i prefer the second one. however, the whole series is just so fucking FUN. it’s magic and anti-capitalism, what more could you ask for? it’s really just me and my kink for jesse eisenberg too, but. it’s a fast-paced, so fucking intriguing movie. also, mark ruffalo was at his fucking PEAK in this movie, so. there’s that
6. the hunger games
the hunger games is pretty self explanatory. the movie misses a lot of stuff, but it’s still very real and gripping and i enjoy watching it a lot. also, jennifer lawrence, josh hutcherson and liam hemsworth.
real life/documentary movies
1. hidden figures
i once watched hidden figures 3 times in one week. it is, undoubtedly, a brilliant fucking movie. it’s so fucking good. it is so good in terms of cinematography, it is so good in terms of song choices, in terms of dialogue, it is so fucking good. it’s about black female mathematicians/scientists at NASA and it’s genuinely of my favorite movies of all time. and also, you learn a lot, so. do yourself a favor and watch it.
2. miss sloane
first off, jessica chastain. this is one of the rare movies i’ve come across where i’m constantly on the edge of my seat. it is intense and fascinating and so fucking good, and 99% of that is because of jessica fucking chastain. it’s an exploration of american politics and also corruption and it has the whole “unreliable narrator” effect and it’s just a really fucking interesting movie.
3. spotlight
spotlight takes a really long look at sexual abuse in the catholic church. and yet, it’s not a super heavy movie. it has heavy themes, of course, but it’s honestly not a very heavy movie. it doesn’t leave you feeling sad, or broken. it’s a really interesting movie that takes a look at what journalism is supposed to be. it’s fucking great.
4. on the basis of sex
it’s a movie about ruth bader ginsburg, and this is pretty much an american centric movie, but it’s still so good. it is worth watching and it focuses on equality and the everyday experiences of a female lawyer fighting for equal rights. it’s just a generally informative, interesting movie.
5. bowling for columbine
honestly, i recommend this movie to everybody, not just americans. it’s not the easiest movie to watch. it’s not very pleasant. but it is interesting. it’s informative. and if you are interested in american gun laws/society, this is the movie for you.
female centric movies
1. the other woman
it is so fucking good. it’s one of my favorite movies on earth? it’s just so pleasant and funny and so fucking lovely. it’s genuinely a great movie with some really nice morals and friendship between women and i really love it. it’s about a woman who learns that her boyfriend is married and has other mistresses and it’s just about female friendship and they get revenge on him and it’s just. fucking FUN
2. pitch perfect
pitch perfect is just a fun, lighthearted movie that has anna kendrick, so really. that’s all i’m saying
3. bad moms
once again, mila kunis. it’s a really fun movie about what happens when you’re an adult with kids and how you can’t really “fall apart.” it’s about women finding companionship with each other and i think it’s just a very good movie that makes me laugh all the time, so. very enjoyable
4. the intern
the intern is not technically a female centric movie. however, it’s so lovely and fun and so fucking charming.
animated movies
1. brave
brave is THE answer to all those disney movies about princesses. brave takes that script and flips it on its fucking head. brave says “fuck romantic love” and focuses on a princess that is genuinely relatable. brave is about familial tensions and magic and it’s so fucking good.
2. how to train your dragon
how to train your dragon is one of the best animated movies i’ve ever seen. it’s fun and so full of heart. it’s so full of creativity and love for the unknown. it takes fantasy concepts and marries them so beautifully with human, personal issues.
3. the incredibles
i’m pretty sure i don’t have to explain why the incredibles is so great.
4. big hero six
big hero six is such an interesting, fun movie that shows off the power of animation perfectly. it’s so interesting and the style is so fucking pretty.
5. frozen
yes, frozen is on this list. i’m honestly not a huge animation fan. i don’t love it the way most people do, but the way frozen is set up, i can watch it like an ordinary movie. it’s a good movie if you have some time to kill.
female protagonists
1. brooklyn
brooklyn is one of those movies where you watch it, and you know there’s something special about it, but you can’t really say what. brooklyn really has this understated beauty, and i think it’s a very very very cinematic movie. it’s lovely and sweet and sad and i think it’s worth the time.
2. the devil wears prada
this is SUCH an interesting movie about the fashion industry and morality and social pressure to conform. it’s fun and sad and bittersweet and i really think it’s a great way to spend 2 hours.
3. the princess diaries
i really don’t have to say much about this. it’s pretty self-explanatory.
4. where’d you go bernadette
this movie is an exploration of being a mother, being a creative, being a struggling soul. it takes a really interesting view on motherhood and artistry. it’s a brilliant movie, and of course, cate blanchett.
there are other movies, of course, and i’m probably forgetting a few of my own favorites. however, i’m sure that at least one of these movies is something someone could enjoy, and i hope it helps with quarantine boredom!
