In some ways, I wonder if Tula is Brennan's chance to revisit some of the feelings Caramelinda struggled with. Both are women who lost their partner and had to deal with the fallout in ways that asked them to de-prioritize their own feelings and well-being.
At some point for Caramelinda, pushing it down meant trying to love Jet and Ruby in ways that prepared them for the heartbreak and hardness she dealt with without letting them into the hurt yoked around her own neck.
Tula, I think, shows us how kind and gentle and loving that desire to protect can look like before it turns brittle and alienating between parent and child. Caramelinda kept her love for Lazuli buried; Tula is burying her kids in her love for Geoffrey. At the center of both, I think, is a simmering wound and anger.
Caramelinda's was dragged out of her by a greater grief; I can't help but wonder if Tula's, too, will only fully emerge after she loses something more precious than her husband. Or will Lila and Jaysohn lose her and inherit the way she holds her anger under wraps? Will their love of her turn into a memorial clouding the anger underneath until it's too late for them, too?

thinking about amethar the unfallen and just overcome with grief like……. gOD he was fifth in line he was never supposed to rule so many things had to go wrong for him to ever become king and they all did and he does and for all amethar is a war guy he can’t die to save his sisters instead he has to live with their legacy in a marriage steeped in loss and a kingdom defined by their sacrifice and he’s not just the unfallen — he’s the last one standing
like it’s so clear watching acoc how many times he’s should’ve died and against all odds he survives but he tries over and over again to sacrifice himself for his family — for the daughters he watches grow up in the peacetime his sisters paid for in death and lament that they weren’t born into war and wish that they could be just like their pops and
and in the end they are. in the end they get what they wanted jet does exactly what he’s been trying to do all season and dies for her family and ruby does what amethar has been doing for the past twenty years and has to fucking live without her

i sometimes fully forget caramelinda, ruler of candia and the sugar lands, dutchess of meringue, bulbian and devout, is a wizard. she learned magic from the archmage. from her wife. from lazuli. caramelinda, queen of candia, had spells!
she’s very overprotective and worried about her daughters using magic but that’s because lazuli did magic and she’s gone. lazuli was the archmage of house rocks and she’s dead. if magic couldn’t save her, if the hungry one consumes the most powerful wizard candia has ever seen, why would she allow them to tempt fate?
caramelinda is the former wife of the archmage. she doesn’t hate magic because of the bulb. she hates magic because it’s useless and she’s seen that firsthand.

Ok I need to ramble about Lapin for a second because like. He isn't mourned. Liam is busy grieving for Preston, and he's hellbent on getting revenge on the carrot, but it's not for Lapin. Theo might have mourned him, but he's immediately hit in the gut with Jet's death, which devastates absolutely everyone in the party. Because everyone loved Jet, and Liam loved Preston, but nobody loved Lapin. His death is sandwiched between two others. What must that feel like, to be unloved by your allegiance and an apostate to your order. Abandoned on both sides. Serving a patron who only asks of you and never gives. Fully prepared to make a villainous monologue and Thunder Step Liam out of there. Lapin saved two people in that fight, Theo and Liam, and both of them are busy grieving someone more important than him. What must that be like!

Lady Plumbeline so thoroughly dishonours her father. Not only betraying King Amethar, her father's dear friend, heir to the Concordant throne and a man who has shown her nothing but grace and kindness, she throws away two decades of a hard won peace her father built, she sides with Ceresia and Vegetania against Fructera's long-standing ally Candia, and goes against every wish Emperor Gustavo Uvano could have regarding the Concordant Empire and House Uvano. And in the end she is killed by a teenage boy in front of Castle Candia, having gained nothing but dishonour.
All that being said she's an absolute smokeshow and that hot plum lady can commit as many crimes as she wants.

Round Two - Bracket Three [Dimension 20 NPC of All Time]
Calroy Cruller vs Chungledown Bim
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Descriptions under the cut
Calroy Cruller - He/Him
Campaign: A Crown of Candy
Who is he?
Lord Calroy "Cal" Cruller is the Marquis of Muffinfield, and King Amethar's best friend and right hand. He is also officially recognized as the ruler of Candia for a time, after staging a coup against House Rocks, until they return to Castle Candy with allies to overthrow him again.
"That mother. fucking. piece. of cake... In those hot. ass. pants..." ― Ally Beardsley on Lord Calroy Cruller
Why is he the NPC of All Time?
"A friend and pal until he isn’t anymore, one of the best reveals and subsequent villain speeches in d20 history, and he has AMAZING pants also, the end of acoc where lou crits w/ payment day for the first time in the campaign on cruller is such a fantastic moment."

Chungledown Bim - He/Him
Campaign: Dimension 20 LIVE
Who is he?
Bimothy, more commonly known as Chungledown Bim, is a gnome pirate from Leviathan and a warlock of Bill Seacaster. He has an impressive beard that looks like it is made of six mustaches, and an assortment of snaggle-teeth all made of different materials. "Bim" is short for Bimothy. His magic takes the form of gold coins shooting out of his hands.
Why is he the NPC of All Time?
He started a rivalry with Fabian for no reason other than that Fabian wasn't a very good pirate (he never claimed to be). He threatens to shit in Fabian's mouth and chases him across Leviathan. Fabian is so terrified of Chungledown Bim that he appears to him in the Nightmare Forest. Cassandra says that she never sent Fabian a vision of Chungledown Bim suggesting that it was really him haunting Fabian.

Just noticed something funny in a crown of candy.
First remember when Calroy hinted his betrayal by stating that "a count can coup" (he is not technically a count but it's enough foreshadowing for me)
Then tiny French lesson:
A coup: translate in French as "un coup d'état", so far nothing funny
To Cut: translate in French as "couper"
A blow: translate in French as "un coup"
Meaning that technically at the end:
Amethar with one last "coup", "coupe" in half the count that coup him.

siobhan thompson appreciation post because her characters just make me so happy and they're so. good. she's so good at characters! spoilers for every intrepid heroes season of d20. i could do a whole other post about her sidequest characters bc they're so good.
Adaine Abernant. The Elven Oracle. She's always been one of my absolute favorite characters ever. Her anxiety representation in the first season makes me feel more seen, understood, and represented than any other character ever. She's literally so cool! She starts freshman year as an awkward nerd and becomes a cool nerd! Her anxiety never goes away, but the medication makes it manageable. She hates her parents because they're awful! Just the rep of having awful parents and hating them and that's okay because they suck! You should hate your parents if they suck as bad as the Abernants! Not everyone gets a redemption arc. If they suck, they suck.
Misty/Rowan. Misty is the perfect representation of an old lady who gives no fucks. She flirts so hard with that guy at the pixie wedding. She openly admits to having been friends with John Wilkes Booth. But at the same time? Will not give her age. A lady never tells. She's absolutely ancient and doesn't fucking care, but she also has this undertone of absolute existential panic because she needs adoration to survive! She stays relevant because she has to! Don't get me started on Rowan. I have a crush on Rowan Berry. She's reborn and immediately starts flirting with Pete, which is iconic in its own right. She's a bard who gives bardic inspiration by either flirting or complimenting, and sometimes the lines blur just a little bit. Absolute queen shit. She defeats the queen of Faerie and has no desire to go back until the Fae court tells her hey. You left us with no leader. And then brings democracy to Faerie! President Rowan!
Ruby Rocks! She starts the season as a kid who loves her sister just so much. That's the most integral part of her character. She's a princess and a rogue, and she loves her sister. She has a lot of development over the season! She ends as a woman who fights for her family and her country. She hates Saccharina when they first meet, a new sister on the tails of the loss of the most important person she's ever had. After Jet's death, she's overcome with grief and takes a level of shadow sorcerer because of it! Her development is amazing, a truly wonderful arc.
Iga Lizowski! Oh. My. God. She's the first pc that is a mom in d20, or at least in the Intrepid Heroes. Her relationship with her kids is so fun to watch, from urging Jessica to engage with the chest to bringing her into another part of the Unsleeping City. Then Nick, who she hadn't pressed at all to take responsibility for the chest, decides to become another defender of his family's magic! Not only is she an amazing mother, she's a fortune teller by trade! She knows full well that everything she does has merit, and that magic is real, but makes it all seem like a lie to cater to her clientele. It's not her intention to become a part of the Dream Team, but when her family is threatened, she fights like hell. Also she has a pseudodragon that's just a magical chihuahua and that's so old ladycore it's such a perfect choice.
Riva. They're just on their gallivant, honestly. They decorate their psychodrone with magnets. They're trying to sell pleasure putty. They make their own hours, but they don't know how. Riva is sweet and fun and naive. They love their friends and they love the outside world and they're having a great ass time on their gallivant.
Rosamund. Du. Prix. Quick little shoutout to Siobhan's princess voice because no joke she did my favorite accent. It borders on transatlantic (my favorite accent) but is very Disney princess. She starts as a Disney princess, too! To have a character looking for her true love wake up, search for him, and ultimately sacrifice her chance at having him is *mwah* beautiful. True love isn't real! She directly confronts this, and a member of her party is living proof of it. She has to see the prince who came to save her, and upon meeting him, she realizes how fucked the idea is. He kisses her once and that's all? She doesn't know him, she doesn't love him. How can she live happily ever after with him? Her story is about having things happen to her, but she wrenches the pen from the authors' hands and writes her fucking own! Once upon a time, there was a princess who tried speed dating!

In watching the aftermath of episode 6, I love how Lapin's death is such a fantastic catalyst for the narrative. The steaks stakes have been elevated. The tone has irrevocably shifted. Normalcy has been shattered: this is war, this is life and death. Nothing is safe.
Before he dies, the party is injured but for the most part we (and the characters) can believe that with the right maneuvering, everything could be okay again. Amethar's legitimacy could somehow be reinstated, and they could return home, shaken but whole. But then very suddenly, it can't: a person they care for has been brutally killed. Even if Amethar regains his seat and all is put to rights, there will have been a grave cost. Their flight from the cathedral is grim with shock and grief. They have had to leave Lapin's body behind with their enemies. I'm of the opinion that if only Preston had died, somehow, that Liam certainly would still have been in a bad place, but the rest of the party might have only felt sympathy, not personal loss (or in the case of the twins, an awakening to the realities of loss and of Lapin as a complete and nuanced person, regardless of how they viewed him). The return of the previously mundane note - Lapin, for Candia - becomes heartwrenching poetry.
This was what I was exactly what I was hoping for when I was heard this silly candyland setting would pack an emotional punch and the gravity of narrative I like in actual play DnD. And it gets to keep being silly and absurd at the same time!! It's impressive to balance those things.
RIP my fave Lapin, I loved you, and I also loved your death.
