Hamilton Loses Australia F1 Engine As Mercedes Uncovers Cause of Failure

Lewis Hamilton has lost the power unit that failed in Formula 1's Australian Grand Prix, Motorsport.com has learned, with Mercedes having got to the bottom of what went wrong.

Hamilton's retirement from the Australian GP has heaped further misery on a troubled start to the season for Mercedes, which has not delivered the step forward hoped for from its 2024 car. The new W15 has shown a particular weakness in high-speed corners, and the team is trying to improve its tire temperature management to better extract more performance from the car. Despite the troubled first few races, Hamilton remained optimistic about the capabilities Mercedes had to turn things around. "I think it's all about perspective," he said. "I think for us, of course, we've not started the season where we wanted to be, but we've got a long way to go. You've seen in the past-last year, for example-just how things can switch in certain teams, looking like Aston, McLaren last year, who started on the back foot. Anything can happen in the sport. I think we've just got to learn as much as we can, take as much as we can from the data, remain positive, continue to work hard, and I would say it's not how you fall, it's how you get up. Movie Review | Gilda (Vidor, 1946)

This review contains spoilers.

I probably complain with some regularity that movies these days ain’t like they used to be and I’d hate to sound like a broken record, but one specific respect in which movies are definitely worse is that we’ve stopped making ones about characters who are Next Level Hot. Characters who are so distressingly attractive it becomes the driving force behind the decisions of everyone around them. Perhaps the subject has been on my mind since my recent viewing of The Swimming Pool, in which three of the principals are unbelievably attractive and the fourth one is played by Maurice Ronet, and the relative levels of attractiveness are used to direct audience sympathies, having us practically beg for the uggo to be removed from the screen by any means necessary. (Listen, I know there are thorny sexual politics at play, but I am all for opening the borders of Next Level Hotness beyond the confines of ideals of conventional attractiveness. It’s a vibe more than anything.)

Now if anyone comes up with modern examples that I’m not aware of, I don’t actually care, I just needed an in to start talking about this movie, which definitely falls in this category. In the parlance of a wise man, I’ve done the research, I’ve looked at the facts, I’ve analyzed the hard data and my conclusion is that there are few things sexier than the way Rita Hayworth throws her head back and lets her hair bounce for a moment. The movie is best known for a number of performances by Hayworth, most notably the (racy by the standards of the ‘40s) striptease to “Put the Blame on Mame”, which most overtly communicate her most magnetic qualities, but even outside these scenes her character throws the entire screen into a web of sexual tension anytime she appears or is even mentioned.

You have Glenn Ford hired by shady casino owning bigshot George Macready to look after his casino and also his wife Hayworth (introduced with that trademark hair bounce). Ford is trapped initially by the confines of his role and also the situations Hayworth forces him to cover up with her promiscuous behaviour, something Macready may or may not be aware of. To paraphrase the words of a high school math teacher when I challenged him on the dimensions of an aesthetically pleasing rectangle, Freud would have a field day with this movie, although I must concede that faking your own death to act out your cuckold fetish seems a bit extreme.

This plays out against a backdrop of a post World War II Argentina milieu, where Macready seems mixed up with a bunch of sinister Germans with whom he forms a tungsten cartel. The movie doesn’t seem terribly interested in the particulars (something about patents and laundering money through the casino) and admits as much when we see Ford looking inattentive as he’s being questioned by a police inspector. I suppose this does give the movie a slight atmosphere of corruption (although the Old Hollywood production values keep this from feeling too seamy), but quite frankly I found the dynamic between the main characters engaging enough that I could do without it.

1. honestly this isn’t even copium like based off everything plus stats etc the balancing of stronger duo vs weaker duo dnf are the strongest duo in the event unless u pit them against ranboo n sapnap which we have no prev team up data to fall back on. ranboo has placed higher than george but george feels just more consistent and more mechanically skilled than ranboo, plus foolish + karl is a much stronger duo than jacksepticeye (he hasn’t even started practicing yet) and crankgameplays. unless something seriously goes wrong red should be placing first every single time

2. might be a controversial opinion and it’s entirely dependent on game selection + order but there are just so few ‘cracked’ people in this event that by virtue of having sapnap and ranboo in a team together this shoots this team’s potential up by a lot. it all comes down to how sapnap & ranboo work together + how they overcome their other two teammate’s lack of mcc experience

3. i think illumina is a superb player. on a different day i might put this team in 2nd. inthelittlewood is like a potential top 20 player, he could place even higher in a non-canon event like this, but i’m not sure i see it happening unless they all majorly pop off. usually illumina always does well individually, but his teams usually only make dodgebolt if he has another member who can make top 10 on his team. snifferish and elainaexe still lack the experience to place high, but hey given the player pool this event, it’s possible they get top 25

4. i think the fate of this team depends on how well velvet adjusts + if tapl um…. performs up to his ability. because ant + tapl could put up a really good fight if they brought their A game but if they don’t they could really slip

5. i give them this for the amount of experienced players they have on this team!! they could really benefit w buildmart being played late lmao or if they were just really coordinated in certain games

6. i think krtzyy is a very good pvper and ponk also is meant to be good at pvp however if the team i placed below them plays it more serious they could potentially place over this team but i see this team pulling ahead for now

7. imo skill wise 5up and tubbo could potentially outplace krtzyy and ponk however i get the vibe that tubbo will not be tryharding mcc pride fjdjdjdjd

8. i feel bad for putting this team here and honestly depending on how hard jojo carries and how well puffy kara and niki adapt they could totally place higher but the fact that puffy is this team’s second strongest player isn’t doing them any favors but perhaps given the lack of experience a lot of this event’s players has this team could pull ahead! i would not be shocked if jojo places top 5 like i trust this girl’s going places

"As I told you there are many properties in the area" began turning into a country road that led to the hills, "If you have any idea tell me so let's see if there is something", Y/N roughly described what they were looking for, a large park and a pond could not be missing,

" Mmm everyone here has a garden ... or rather a park" she laughed, stopping at the top of the hill to show her the area, "As you can see the houses are far enough away to have all the privacy you want" said, Y/N admired the landscape dotted with big houses, really big, she thought,

"Er Sammy .. " she said fearfully, "..Thomas and I are looking for a house not a mini castle, these are gigantic", Sammy looked at her seemed not to follow her speech,

"Sorry Sammy " she said in a low voice, "I didn't mean to waste your time like this",

"Imagine Y/N, it is true that you could have explained yourself better .. but I had to ask .. we are even" she laughed, the woman managed to find something and they headed towards the first property, a man was waiting for them at the gate,

"Hi Miss, I'm Gerald Connor the caretaker" he said cheerfully shaking hands with the group,

"I'm amazed you're looking for such a small house" he laughed as led the way

"They just told me that in England they use much larger" smiled Y/N explaining the reasons for their choice, the caretaker laughed opening the door,

"Take a seat" gestured Gerald making them pass, "the central hall has a beautiful fireplace that works perfectly" he said showing the great room, the marble inlaid fireplace was spectacular, a large table was placed next to the fire could seat a dozen people , two twin sofas on the opposite side were turned towards the large window overlooking the park, you could see a stream passing through the property, the deer grazed placidly in the park, Y/N was ecstatic,

"The kitchen is habitable .. " he says and continuing his visit, ".. as soon as outside there is an old bread oven, but it needs to be fixed", they went upstairs passing through the turret

"There are 6 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms, the master bedroom has a private bathroom" he said, letting the group wander around the rooms,

"There are some work to be done, it was used as a hunting lodge" he led the way outside and there Y/N understood that it was the right one, the large park was hidden behind the house by a grove of centuries-old oaks and horse chestnuts, fruit trees were scattered around, missing only a pool but it would have made to install if the deal was successful, tried to stay on longer neutral and calm as possible but she was so happy that he had trouble,

" Sammy is her .. is perfect!!" she said softly taking her aside, "You seem much better at bargaining .. " smiled at her,

"Nice to meet you, I 'm George McGregor " said the man introducing himself smiling, "Sorry if I made you wait, you are the first to be interested in the shed for years" laughed, taking a seat in the house followed by the group,

"Don't worry" replied Sammy , "The house is for my friends" said introducing Y/N,

"Calling it home is a great compliment" he laughed, "Space is limited .. "

"My partner and I were not looking for something big but rather a little house to enjoy when not working" replied Y/N, "This is perfect for us",

"Before talking about money I have only one request .. more than the neighbors .. " he said worried, ".. many VIPs live in the area so there is a private surveillance service .. you should leave your data at the office in town ..", Sammy and Phil looked at Y/N trying not to laugh,

"Come back to me please .. I love you" he said greeting her, the woman gave the cell phone to Sammy who greeted Tom before hanging up,

"Thomas wants to know when he is free to sign, he likes the house and the price is perfect" she said shaking the man's hand,

"I'll leave you my number, call me when your boyfriend is available" he said passing Y/N a business card, "I'm glad the house is in good hands",

"We will have the utmost care" she replied cheerfully, "Thanks for your availability at such short notice", they said goodbye and got back in the car to go to London,

"Aren't we going back to you?" asked Y/N on the way

"We're going to see me in London" she laughed seeing the woman's expression, "Tomorrow shopping and I don't know a better place than London to shop",

"Since we're going to London then I'll stop at home so we're all more comfortable, Phil will you stay with me?" asked his friend who nodded, “ Sammy do you think you can even get a hairdresser in shopping? I can't stand long hair anymore and you have to redo the color .. "

"Oh Thomas .. I love you" Y/N answered moved, he too had noticed that it wasn't her but he hadn't told her anything, " As long as I 'm at home do you need anything?"

"I would say no, maybe check your mail" he laughed before greeting her,

"I ordered Chinese so we don't go out," Phil informed her, " What's the schedule tomorrow ?"

“I don't know her very much but she always makes me laugh” Y/N answered opening to the bellboy, they had dinner and watched a movie before collapsing in bed.

Sammy arrived at 10 am doing something new .. rang the bell,

"Day" Y/N said sleepily, "You could have entered without ringing" she laughed going into the kitchen,

"I didn't want to disturb, one thing is when Tommy is around .. another is when you have guests" Sammy laughed over the coffee, "I know you and Phil are just friends don't look at me like that"

"Sorry I get constant attacks from paparazzi and fans I have become rigid about these things .. it's not like me" she said in a low voice, "But today I get my temper back just bend over and be afraid .. " she said seriously, Sammy stared at her and burst out laughing,

" Mat hi here we are" she said cheerfully hugging the hairdresser, "She is Y/N .. bring out the colors",

"Nice to meet you" he said shaking her hand, "Let's start with you then, what did you have in mind?" asked making her sit down and putting a cape around her shoulders,

"I want to get rid of the extensions , shave the sides and go back to my fuchsia and blue" she said happy to get rid of that good girl hair that didn't belong to her,

"Great, Sabine prepares for the bleaching" told her assistant before starting to shave the woman's hair, the fake locks fell to the ground lightly, he took some scissors and removed the extensions one at a time, fixed the cut and put the bleach on first to get to work on Sammy ,

"Do you know that I almost copy you?" she said looking at Y/N cheerfully, "Not the cut of course .. but I've always wanted to try something bold",

"Are you sure?" Mat asked , "How about keeping your color above and below purple and pre-oil ?" he asked taking the color palette and trying them on, "Bold is fine but I know you dear .. " he laughed,

"I like the idea, they would only show when I move my hair or tie it" replied Sammy now convinced, Mat put the bleach on her too and moved to prepare the colors,

"Come on, let's take a picture like this with the bleach on our head .. let's terrorize our men" laughed Y/N posing sexy with the woman, they laughed like little girls, they waited for the answers that were not long in coming,

"David is horrified" Sammy laughed , "He says you have a bad influence on me",

"Thomas seems curious to see you with colored hair" she laughed, "Is this the first time?" asked puzzled,

"What a color change no .. that I do my hair purple absolutely yes " she laughed, "You have to be a little crazy sometimes .. and besides there is always total black in case", after half an hour they had white hair ready for the color,

"Do you have any preference for mixing?" Mat asked before applying the colors,

"Usually I put blue on the roots and blend up to fuchsia on the tips .. more fuchsia than blue though" she smiled, it was the first time someone made her the color she was no longer used to it,

"Perfect, let's start then, Sabine .. " the assistant called and they set to work, "If you like the result, I'll prepare you an envelope with the colors I used to make them yourself", the woman thanked and enjoyed the pampering , they brought an aperitif and ate something while they waited, once washed and dried Y/N looked at herself and found herself in the reflection of the mirror, she smiled happily,

"OMG !!" she turned to hear Sammy scream as looked at herself, "I don't know what to say I'm confused .. " laughed astonished,

" Sammy they look great on you," Y/N said, moving her locks behind to make the colors shine through,

"I like the result, with long hair like yours it's a great idea", Sammy kept looking at herself undecided,

" They are .. weird .. beautiful but really weird .. " she laughed, ".. why do they look so good on you?" she asked jealous,

" Because I am fabulous with these colors!!" laughed Y/N making the grimace, "And because I feel at ease, I look beautiful with these tones", they paid the bill and went out, they spent the rest of the morning wandering around the shops, Y/N ordered pillows and puofs for the house over there,

" Sammy, is there a florist in the area?" asked Y/N looking around, the woman nodded and led the way, around the corner there was a kiosk full of flowers,

"Day I would like a bouquet of yellow roses please" she said to the boy, "And if has them also one of sunflowers", Sammy looked at her curiously,

"I understand sunflowers .. why roses?" asked, "If I remember correctly they indicate jealousy .. are you all right dear?"

"Very well, I wanted to make a gift to "that" that's all" she replied cheerfully, Sammy looked at her sideways asking why,

" Well in the end she behaved like an ignoble being .. but if Thomas hadn't done it and I would never have met" she replied calmly, "It seemed nice to thank her"

"You are really twisted" said bursting out laughing, "I wish I was a fly to see his face", they finished the purchases and left for the set.

She found Thomas on the sofa going over, "as if he needed it" thought putting the flowers in the water,

"My King I missed you," she said, putting herself in his arms to kiss him,

" Honey welcome back" he said kissing her, ruffling her forelock, "You look great, like when I met you .. ruffled and colored" he laughed looking at her,

"How did the shopping go?" he asked not seeing envelopes or packages, "Weren't you inspired?"

"Have found something for the house, I did take home and warned Ali because mail it with the rest," smiled when she saw the startled face of the man at the mention of her pr , "And I took the flowers .. "

"I saw ..yellow roses?" he asked curiously, staring at her,

"Um really I'm for "that".. " Y/N answered laughing, "..and I apologize in advance" she concluded, staring at him to try to understand what he was thinking, the man kept staring at her undecided,

"Please explain Darling why I don't follow you .. " he answered curiously, "..I have some ideas but I want to hear it from you",

"I know it will seem absurd to you .. " she exposed almost guilty, suddenly was lacking the courage, ".. but if she hadn't behaved like a bitch we two will not be together now .. " said in a low voice,

" Darling .. " he said amazed, smiling at her, ".. I don't know what to say, if when it happened they told me that I would find the woman of my life I would have laughed .." he continued taking her in his arms,

What the defense has planned

During the jury selection process, Nelson tried to humanize Chauvin beyond the image of the white police officer who knelt on a Black man’s neck as he struggled to breathe and begged for his mother.

When the first batch of potential jurors was being questioned, Chauvin — with half his face obscured by a black mask — sat taking notes and rarely making eye contact. At one point, a juror said she could not forget the “hateful look” on Chauvin’s face in the videos. The comment altered the way Nelson later introduced his client to potential jurors, with Chauvin removing his mask to show his full face and nodding at the group.

To avoid convicting Chauvin of the second-degree unintentional murder charge, the defense must prove he did not cause Floyd’s death while also committing a felony — in this case, assault. The defense will argue that Chauvin did not cause Floyd’s death, that it was a combination of excessive drug use and preexisting conditions that killed him. They will call on the county medical examiner who said Floyd’s toxicology report showed high traces of drugs during the incident — but the examiner also noted that it’s hard to say whether Floyd would have died of other causes, like Chauvin’s knee on his neck. If convicted, under Minnesota law, the charge is punishable by up to 40 years in prison.

To avoid conviction on the second-degree manslaughter charge, the defense needs to prove that Chauvin didn’t cause Floyd’s death due to negligence that created an unreasonable risk — meaning, he didn’t know that pinning him down by his neck for nearly nine minutes would lead to severe injury or death. In Minnesota, this charge carries a maximum sentence of up to 10 years.

The third-degree murder charge, under Minnesota law, means the perpetrator acted in a way that was reckless at the risk of causing death and carries a sentence of no more than 25 years. Prosecutors argued to add the third-degree murder charge because not only is it easier to prove than second-degree unintentional felony murder, but it also gives jurors more options about how to convict. If convicted of any of these charges, Chauvin’s status as a first-time offender will also play into how long his prison sentence will be.

Ultimately, the defense’s central strategy is proving that something else ended Floyd’s life — and that it was not Chauvin’s knee. Nelson pushed for a pre-trial motion to include evidence of Floyd’s drug-related arrest by Minneapolis police in 2019. After reviewing Nelson’s arguments, in which the attorney called Floyd’s “emotional responses” during both arrests a “common modus operandi,” Judge Cahill has allowed the defense to show only a portion of the 2019 arrest video as evidence during the trial, adding that Floyd’s interactions with the police in 2019 mirrored the 2020 arrest that led to his death. Cahill also agreed that there were signs that Floyd may have taken drugs in both incidents.

The defense has also tried to argue that Chauvin was terminated due to prejudice, not for cause, and that Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo only fired him out of public pressure. However, prosecutors successfully motioned to exclude any evidence or testimony that speaks to the police department’s decision to fire Chauvin and the other three officers involved since it’s unrelated to how and why Floyd died.

Nelson’s arguments so far give observers a glimpse of how he expects to approach the trial — that the entire investigation leading to Floyd’s death was fundamentally biased against his client, including the ongoing federal civil rights investigation and Chauvin’s immediate firing. Arradondo, the city’s first Black police chief, said he fired the officers after reviewing all the evidence including body-camera videos.

During the month-long trial, several witnesses are expected to testify, including Arradondo, the county medical examiner, and the bystander who videotaped Chauvin kneeling on Floyd’s neck.

The prosecution also plans to introduce “spark of life” witnesses, which under Minnesota law allows family and friends to be called to the stand to deliver testimony that would humanize the victim. Floyd’s brother, Philonise Floyd, and former girlfriend Courteney Ross are among those expected to speak.

However, the spark-of-life testimonies won’t be considered “evidence” and will be tightly managed by Cahill. The judge said he would draw a line if witnesses talk about Floyd’s character rather than how much they loved him since it would “open the door” for the defense to introduce Floyd’s criminal history as evidence, which so far has been ruled inadmissible. Cahill, nonetheless, added he may allow witnesses to talk about Floyd’s struggles with opioid addiction.

“This is not a hard case,” Ben Crump, the attorney who helped the Floyd family secure the $27 million settlement, said in a news release after the jury selections were completed. “George Floyd had more witnesses to his death than any other person ever — white or Black. We all saw the same thing — the indisputable and unjustified torture and murder by a police officer of a Black man who was handcuffed, restrained, and posed no harm.”

What we know about the jury

The initial jury pool had 326 people, but only about 60 were questioned. Cahill decided 15 needed to be selected, including two alternates and another who will be dropped if the first 14 jurors show up for duty (only 12 will be on the actual jury).

Even though the jury selection process was broadcasted live, the faces of the prospective jurors were not shown to the public for their safety and privacy, and they will not be seen for the duration of the trial. Among the 15 selected jurors, we do know six are people of color — one Black woman, three Black men, and two mixed-race women — while nine are white, six of whom are women. Despite being a white majority, the jury is actually more diverse than the county and the city: According to 2019 data from the US Census Bureau, Hennepin County is about 74 percent white and 14 percent Black while Minneapolis is about 64 percent white and 19 percent Black.

The jurors also come from an array of backgrounds, ranging from an accountant to a chemist to a nurse who has been caring for patients throughout the Covid-19 pandemic. Some are extremely familiar with the case while others haven’t been actively following monthslong developments. According to USA Today, seven are in their 20s or 30s, three in their 40s, four in their 50s, and one in her 60s.

Prior to the selection, each potential juror was asked to fill out a 14-page written questionnaire. Reports showing farmers hurt by the president’s policies have drawn the ire of top officials.

Economists in the Agriculture Department's research branch say the Trump administration is retaliating against them for publishing reports that shed negative light on White House policies, spurring an exodus that included six of them quitting the department on a single day in late April.

The Economic Research Service — a source of closely read reports on farm income and other topics that can shape federal policy, planting decisions and commodity markets — has run afoul of Agriculture Secretary Sonny Perdue with its findings on how farmers have been financially harmed by President Donald Trump's trade feuds, the Republican tax code rewrite and other sensitive issues, according to current and former agency employees.

The reports highlight the continued decline under Trump’s watch in farm income, which has dropped about 50 percent since 2013. Rural voters were a crucial source of support for Trump in 2016, and analysts say even a small retreat in 2020 could jeopardize the president’s standing in several battleground states.

“The administration didn’t appreciate some of our findings, so this is retaliation to harm the agency and send a message,” said one current ERS employee, who asked not to be named to avoid retribution.

For example, two ERS researchers presented a paper at an economic conference in early 2018 that indicated the GOP tax overhaul would largely benefit the wealthiest farmers — generating negative press coverage that staff members said irked senior officials at USDA.

Then, in August, Perdue stunned members of the roughly 300-member research service by announcing plans to bring ERS under the control of USDA’s chief economist, who reports more directly to the secretary. Equally significant, he said the USDA would move the agency out of Washington to a location closer to the U.S. heartland.

Members of the agency were also caught off-guard last summer when Perdue’s office issued an internal memo directing ERS and other research branches to include disclaimers in their peer-reviewed publications stating that the findings were “preliminary” and “should not be construed to represent any agency determination or policy” — seen as a way of watering down any unflattering data from the department’s own experts.

The move to uproot the agency has led to a brain-drain of experienced researchers. So far in fiscal 2019, non-retirement departures from the agency have more than doubled on an annualized basis compared to the previous three-year average, according to data collected by employees.

Six of the economists — made up of specialists in the agricultural economy, farm taxation and food programs with more than 50 years of combined experience at ERS — left the agency at the end of April, out of frustration with the relocation process or in some cases suspicion about Perdue’s efforts to reshape USDA’s research wing, according to coworkers. More are planning to leave in the coming months.

For his part, Perdue has said the relocation was motivated by his desire to save taxpayer dollars, bring the research service closer to major farming regions, and help attract economists who could be deterred by Washington’s high cost of living.

“I really have been a little surprised with the naysayers on this,” he said last month at a Senate Appropriations hearing, touting the move as a common-sense, cost-cutting measure.

Perdue’s office declined to provide information on the numbers of employees who’ve quit or respond to allegations of political interference in the research service.

But the secretary alluded to frustrations with the quality of USDA research in comments to POLITICO on April 30, saying that all decision-making in the department must be “fact-based.”

“In USDA, we want good scientific discovery,” Perdue said, when asked about the mandated research-disclosure language. “We want peer-based evidence there. We know that research, some has been found in the past to not have been adequately peer-reviewed in a way that created wrong information, and we’re very serious when we say we’re fact-based, data-driven decision makers. That relies on sound, replicatable science rather than opinion. What I see unfortunately happening many times is that we tried to make policy decisions based on political science rather than on sound science.”

Perdue and Trump made clear in their budget request in March that they wanted to reduce the scope of the ERS, eliminating “low priority research” into such politically sensitive areas as food stamps and environmental issues.

The White House blueprint called for slashing ERS staff levels by more than 50 percent, cutting the total number of positions from about 329 to 160.

The budget is unlikely to be approved by Congress, but members of the service say they’ve already seen the effects of Trump’s and Perdue’s preferences.

“Things like conservation, rural development, food assistance, have just been de-emphasized” in favor of the administration’s preferred topics, said one economist who left ERS because of the relocation plan.

Former ERS Administrator Susan Offutt, who oversaw the service under Presidents Bill Clinton and George W. Bush, said the agency’s studies showing how USDA’s farm-subsidy programs disproportionately benefit wealthier farmers have been a “perennial irritant” to influential lobbying groups, but an “over-the-top reaction” to clamp down on such reports would be unprecedented.

“Of course, this is not the story the farm lobby wants to tell about struggling farmers,” said Offutt. “Controlling ERS would stop unflattering news about federal farm subsidies favoring high-income, high-wealth farm households from reaching the public.”

Lawmakers have complained that USDA has yet to provide a full cost-benefit analysis of its plan to move the office closer to the heartland. Republicans have increasingly supported the relocation plan, while House Democrats have filed legislation to block the move.

On Friday, the USDA announced three finalists for the new headquarters of the service and the National Institute of Food and Agriculture, which is also being moved out of Washington. The finalists are Kansas City, the North Carolina research triangle region and multiple locations in Indiana.

Perdue’s office has promised to release further data justifying the move when he announces a final site recommendation this month.

Within the service, skeptical employees view the secretary’s rationale for the move and the months-long site selection process carried out by accounting firm Ernst & Young as a smokescreen.

“The message we’ve been getting is, ‘The cost-benefit analysis doesn’t matter. Being close to stakeholders doesn’t matter. The only thing that matters for you is the fact that the secretary wants you to move, thinks it’s in your best interest, and that’s what we’re doing,’” said another senior ERS economist who declined to use his name for fear of retaliation.

Brian Stacy, a former ERS economist who left in February, said he thinks the move is a way for the administration to force out staff members and reduce the size of the ERS without congressional approval.

“Part of me wonders whether this relocation is just a way to get at that staff reduction,” Stacy said, referring to the president’s budget request. “I don’t know how else to read some of the moves being made.”

ERS employees are planning to vote on unionization on Thursday.

USDA intends to keep 76 ERS employees in Washington and relocate 253 positions to the new location, USDA senior adviser Kristi Boswell told a House Appropriations panel in March.

“This is the spiraling down of the fantastic work that the ERS has done for years,” said Sonny Ramaswamy, who headed the National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Obama and early Trump administrations. “It’s one way to drain the swamp, as it were.”

No body spoke in Resus 1, but it was far from silent. The refrigeration unit of the Temperature Management Vest filled the room with a baseline humming. On top of that, the high-pitched whine of the flatlined monitor screamed that the patient was still asystolic. Louder than those background noises was the occasional hiss as Kirstie, one of the nurses tending to the young woman on the table, squeezed the ambu-bag. The loudest sound came from on top of the table itself. A large blocky device stood over the patient, her wrists strapped to the side. A plunger sticking out the underside forced her chest down with a hiss and a click, beating down 100 times a minute.

 There was little other activity in the room. Two paramedics, Dave and Lucy, stood in the corner, flanking a young man, George who had ended up sitting on the floor, his head in his hands. Nearby, Zainab, a junior doctor who was only observing, kept herself out of the way but took in every detail. Roger and Jessica were stood by the crash cart. Roger was behind it, unobtrusive as he recorded every drug administered, every procedure tried and a minute-by-minute list of the patient’s vital signs. Jessica was ready to work the defibrillator at a moment’s notice.

 Sarah had the drug drawer of the crash cart laid out on a counter. She silently prepared another round of epi, ready to give it when ordered. The lead doctor, Carl, was stood across the bed from the crash cart, gaze on the monitor, ready to react as soon as something broke through the flatline. The last person standing in the room was Anna Swift, lead nurse, who stood at the foot of the bed, gripping the bottom rail of the trauma bed. She breathed slowly and deeply, paying off the oxygen debt from the near 7 minutes of chest compressions she had administered.

 Anna was the only one not watching the monitors. She was staring at the young woman who was laying lifeless on the table. Amelia Preston looked eerily similar to Anna, to the point the Anna couldn’t help but picture herself on that table, totally naked, wrapped in the special vest that cooled her body, ecg tabs and defib pads visible through the clear plastic. Her abdomen bulging rhythmically as the Lucas thumped her chest over and over.

 A chill ran down her spine, mostly dread at the thought of being in full cardiac arrest. But there was also a thin undercurrent of arousal. Having so many people working to bring her back from the brink of death. It was not the first time such thoughts had come to her mind. But it was by far the strongest occurrence. Her grip tightened on the rail as she forced the thoughts away, there would be time to explore them later, when a young woman’s life wasn’t in the balance.

 The wide door of Resus 1 swung open as Trish returned from the lab. “No drugs and her white cell count is normal so no infection.” She stated, her voice sounding loud from the lack of talking in the past two minutes.

 “So, we’re left with a purely cardiac diagnosis.” Carl said sighing. “I’ll chase them up personally. Anna, call the shots.” He said as he stalked towards the phone in the corner.

 Anna released the end rail, stepping around the bed to get a better view of the monitor. It still showed asystole. “Where are we on time?”

 “31 minutes.” Roger stated, not even having to read off the chart.

 “Sarah, go ahead with that Epi.” Anna watched her colleague push the drug into the central line. “Let’s give it a minute to circulate, then do a pulse check.”

 While everyone waited, watching the Lucas squeeze Amelia’s heart with mechanical precision, Anna glanced over at Carl. He was frowning. “Just put her on.” He growled through gritted teeth.

Anna’s attention was pulled back to the monitor as the whining alarm cut out, replaced by a rising and falling tone. The flatline had changed, waving slightly over and beneath the baseline. The peaks and throughs were random and unorganised. “That’s fine V-Fib. Jess.”

 “On it, charging to 360.”

 “Come on Amelia, time to come back.” Anna whispered as the charge indicator raced up the defib’s screen. She checked to make sure everyone was clear, Kirstie had let go of the amub, leaving it sat beside Amelia’s head, and had reached up to pause the Lucas. The defib indicator flashed. “All clear Jess.”

 “Shocking!”

 Amelia spasmed, her chest held in place by the plunger of the Lucas. Her legs twitched aggressively squeaking slightly as she rubbed against the inside of the plastic cooling vest. Her arms, strapped to the Lucas, shuddered as much they were able, her fingernails clicking against the hard shell of the Lucas.

 Anna watched the monitor for a moment, but the fine Vfib returned. She didn’t need to ask Kirstie to resume the Lucas, the nurse had already reached up and with the turn of a dial the device returned to pressing down on Amelia’s bruised and battered chest. “Get ready to shock again in one minute.” Anna told the team. She looked back over to Carl.

 He was quickly explaining the main points of the case. That they’d ruled out other factors, that she had been wearing a monitor and the resus team needed to read it. “She’s been down for 32 minutes, but pupil response is still present. Ok. See you in 5.” He sighed, hanging the phone back on the wall.

 “Charged to 360.” Jess stated from the defib. Anna nodded, as once again the Lucas was paused and everyone stepped back. “Shocking.”

 Amelia spasmed again, with the same squeak of plastic and clack of fingernails. Her head fell to the side, her open, sightless eyes staring right into Anna’s. Anna felt a sudden spike of discomfort that cast aside any erotic thoughts and shattered her focus. Amelia’s eyes were exactly the same colour as her own. Anna was momentarily trapped, staring into those chestnut lined pools. Then Amelia’s head began to shake gently, the Lucas had resumed its work.

 Anna tore her gaze away from her doppelganger, back to the monitor. It continued the same alarm, but it sounded strange, muffled. The fine VF had become even finer, the erratic movements of the line barely discernible. “Still no response.” She heard someone mutter, before realising it was herself.

 “Anna. You ok?” She turned her head slowly, to see Carl standing next to her, a hand on her shoulder that she couldn’t feel. “You with us?” He asked again, his concern clear in his voice.

 Anna realised she’d been holding her breath. She breathed out slowly, fighting to find her centre. It had never been this difficult before. She could feel her own heartbeat as she took a deep breath. There seemed to be a moment where her heart just stopped. But then her mind kicked back into gear. Everything sprang back into focus. With a shake of the head she dismissed the skipped beat as a figment of her imagination.

 “I’m fine. Sorry, I just spaced out a little.” The other nurses looked at her, also concerned.

 “I know she looks like you.” Carl said quietly. “You can step out if you want.”

 Anna shook her head. “I’m fine.” She repeated. “I’m focused.”

 Carl nodded, dropping the matter, then turned back to the resuscitation efforts. “Charge again, be ready to shock her on the minute.”

 Amelia jerked, her heart struck for the 10th time. And likely the last. The monitor began to whine as her heart stopped completely. Anna felt the sensation of defeat, and she could see it on the faces of the rest of the team. She hesitated for a moment, then reached up and restarted the Lucas.

 Two minutes passed with no response. The monitor showing nothing but the perfectly flat line despite the Epi that had been pushed in. The cardiologist arrived, a silver haired woman pushing towards her 60s. She apologised to Carl, then set up a laptop, connecting the pocket monitor. It took another minute to extract the data recording, and a further two for her to study the data. The whole time Amelia remained asystolic, her abdomen bulging as the Lucas slammed her ribs down.

 The cardiologist waved Carl over. “Long QT syndrome.” She told him, pointing to the distance between the small dip before the spike and the little bump after the main heart beat waveform on the screen. She scrolled it on. “Complicated by 1st degree AV block. Inciting incident induced Torsade de pointes.” She pointed at the sawtoothed V-tach and the way it became larger and smaller in a pattern, taking on the appearance of a twisted ribbon.

 She progressed through the recording, to the point where shocks were being delivered. “See the way the defibs barely even touch the rhythm. There’s not enough depolarisation.”

 “Would a dual-sequential shock do the trick?” Carl asked, looking at the girl on the table.

 “It’s possible, but…” The cardiologist sighed, glancing at the asystolic monitor then the clock. “It’s probably too late. Getting a shockable rhythm at this point....”

 Carl looked like he was about to argue, then sagged with defeat. He walked over to the table, looking at Anna, making sure that it wasn’t her lying lifeless before him.  He seemed to hesitate, that heroic, determined part of him wanting to make a final stand. To battle every inch for one last attempt. Anna knew what she had to do. She squeezed his shoulder gently as she passed him on the way to the head of the bed. She took out her penlight, softly opening Amelia’s eyes.

 She saw her own eyes again, but her focus held this time. She passed the light across the pupils. They remained wide, dark, unmoving pools, with a chestnut ring around the edge.

 “Pupils fixed and dilated.” She announced, watching as Carl almost visibly deflated. She was almost glad. She didn’t want to be cruel, but she’d seen what happened when he threw everything in. When it still didn’t work. It would crush him, leave him with a dark cloud over him for weeks. It was a mercy, in a way, to save him from that. But it meant declaring a young woman dead.

 “She’s been down for 45 minutes, no pupil response and no cardiac activity. Are we all agreed?” The rest of the room seemed to be averting their gazes from Amelia’s body, still shaking and shifting from the brutal compressions of the Lucas. Anna reached up and turned off the machine. Sarah did the same with the monitor, and Kirstie disconnected the ambu bag. For the first time in the best part of an hour, Amelia became still.

 “Time of death, 16:22.” Carl stated with a flat voice. He signed off on the clipboard.

 The team stood in silence for a few moments, processing the loss as Dave and Lucy escorted a weeping George from Resus 1. Then they carefully, gently, began to clean up the body of their young patient.
