'The residential boom of the Great Migration made way for a new collective creativity, ripening a neighborhood for the most unprecedented cultural explosion in American History and solidifying Harlem as an icon of inspiration. To this day, artists pay homage to Harlem with their extraordinary vision, creating undisputed contributions to American Art. From the 1920s through the mid-1970s, the social and historical documentation of the neighborhood became an art in its own right, depicting not only a very personal experience and the evolution of the artistic community, but also the community at large. Still, in a time of rampant racism and inequality, the artists were largely underrepresented and even unseen... From the crafted poses in studio portraiture to candid street photography, New York State’s Harlem Art Collection exemplifies some of the significant eyes and voices that chronicle a community in Seeing Harlem. Some more works from the opening of #SoulofaNation exhibition @brooklynmuseum big shout out to @zoe.whitley and her team @tate and Ashley James @ohashuhlee at the #BrooklynMuseum it is SUCH an important exhibition and the American tour of the show now starting in #Brooklyn will have a huge impact on it’s visitors! Soul of a Nation: Art in the Age of Black Power I never seize to be fascinated about how great #art withstands the test of time. A true testament of great art. A lot of the #artwork that was selected is as fresh and modern today as it was when it was created in the 60s and 70s And unfortunately a lot of the issues that drove them to do what they did are still as relevant today as they were back then!!! ✊🏽👊🏽💥 Those #artists put their #heart and #SOUL into their work and it is as poignant today as it was at the time. Direct from the Director Spring 2022

We are thrilled to open our new exhibition, 13 Ways of Looking at Landscape: Larry Silver's Connecticut Photographs on Thursday, March 24th. We will celebrate with our first in person opening with food and drink, where we can raise a glass together, in over two years. I hope that you will be able to join us.

I am very grateful to those of you who contributed to our 2021-22 annual appeal, have renewed your membership in our 2010 Society, and have donated to our Black Art Fund. If you have not yet donated please do, and help us to keep our exhibitions and programs free and open to all. You can give on our website or you can send us a check.

I am very excited to announce our most recent gift to the museum's permanent collection: a very generous donation from the Sam Francis Foundation of six prints and two paintings on paper. We look forward to sharing these works with you in the gallery soon.

Adger Cowans: Sense and Sensibility is on view through June 18th - in the Bellarmine Hall Galleries, don't miss it. The rescheduled program featuring Deborah Willis in conversation with Adger Cowans, moderated by guest curator Halima Taha is now taking place on April 13th at 5 pm in the Quick Center. It will be followed by a wine and cheese reception. It is going to be fantastic, so please come!

Deeply rooted in social commentary, abstraction, bold experimentation, and the ability to explore concepts beyond traditional "Black Art," this exhibition presents an intimate view into the creative worlds of two accomplished artists. Although generationally separated, Jahmane's and Cowan's work share common threads that complement each other as if created on simultaneous timelines. The range of subject matter, medium, and technique demonstrate each artist's ability to translate diverse concepts into newfound works of art ranging from graffiti, fashion, graphic design, cultural iconography, and murals in Jahmane's case and photography, textiles, and painting for Adger. Each has their unique voice for the era in which they come from, but both have an endless sense of exploration that pushes boundaries in our civic discourse but also as curious artistic minds.
