okay so i want to hear about your take on aegon i know you like him and all (so do i no matter how much i wish not to) but whyy
yess thanks for asking, I love being insane about him<3
I think Aegon is such a wildly tragic character– many asoiaf characters are but I'm so drawn specifically to him; he didn't want power or responsibility or the crown. It all was bestowed upon him against his will, and he shouldn't; putting on the crown is his definitive death sentence. The coronation scene has got to be one of my favorites in the season– he is quite literally walking up to be butchered like a sacrificial lamb, there are tears streaking his cheeks in the scene! I love the tragedy of it, the way it couldn't have been avoided anyways; his fate was sealed from the very start! He was quite literally dead from the very beginning.

I'm going off a mix from the book and the show but I actually love what they did with the character in the show? The book version does have some hard-hitting moments from him that are missing ("What sort of brother steals his sister's birthright?") but there wasn't that much there in terms of characterization and relationships. And wow, did they deliver on that in the show; I'm gonna give whoever came up with his mommy issues a forehead kiss.
Because YES! He and Alicent are reflections of one another– Alicent suffered under the heavy boot of Otto, turned into the perfect daughter, turned into the perfect queen for him. She recognizes that this was wrong and abusive of him, then she turns around and does the same thing to Aegon– the poison DOES drip through, the wheel is NOT broken!! It's BRILLIANT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
@atopvisenyashill put a GREAT tag under one of my posts–
#he looks like her and he’s weak like her so why can’t he get strong like her.
While Alicent persevered, Aegon crumbled under the pressure. He is miserable when we meet him– and he should be! He is unfit for the role of king, but it is his destiny nonetheless, everybody tells him so. It destroys him.
It's so sad too and I cannot help but to feel bad for him. No one knows where he is in ep 9, I don't think he has anyone to confide in; it must be lonely. Everybody seems to have written him off already– he is a drunk and a failure at being heir, being a son, being a father. He tries to prove them wrong later, and does in some aspects.
His loneliness plays into another aspect of him that I really love; his desperation to be loved. He will never be enough for anybody, he probably knows it deep down.
"[Aegon is] desperate to be loved but destined to be hated." – Tom Glynn-Carney
Obviously there is the carriage scene with Alicent that shows this. But I also really love the moment in his coronation, where he basks in the people's affection and cheers. He is poised to bleed out in front of the throne, he was crying and fighting for his life not to take the crown just minutes before. But now he's here and they love him and he can't help but love that.
Tumblr media
He takes the crown to protect his family (the show does hint at that with Alicent telling him as much in ep. 6– in the book it's much more explicit with Criston pressuring him on the day of the coronation itself) and then his son DIES because of it! And he drinks and rages and drinks some more; he must've blamed himself. He goes to battle, flies too high (figuratively), and he FALLS; he burns and falls to the ground. He isn't made to be king. He knows. He does it anyways.
"You have already written yourself into legend, you survived dragonfire" – Larys Strong in season 2 (probably)
He survives, he is gone for over a year, unable to do anything but he SURVIVES. He escapes the capital, takes Dragonstone, he falls AGAIN, he loses most of his family; but he still goes on. Fueled by what? Maybe anger, or bitterness or just pure lust for revenge. It doesn't matter. He must've realized somewhere on the way that this was always meant to go this way, ever since he put the conqueror's crown on. It doesn't matter.
And then he dies and it's not grand or spectacular or anything like that. He drinks poisoned wine, nobody even sees him die, they only find him after. It's so uniquely lonely.

i know i said aegon is dionysus-coded and i mostly stand by that but also want to introduce apollo-coded aegon. apollo who violently chases love and fails each time. aegon who does not know the difference between love and possession.

aegon having his mother’s face but his father’s coloring until the war where he is injured and weakened and hidden away before coming back with his body half burnt and his legs no longer working as they used to and he still has his father’s coloring but his face is covered in burns where viserys once had half a golden mask so he’s only remembered as resembling his father

I think I'm amongst the few persons who don't mind Aegon stans getting dragged over that aegonthinker account. I say this because quite a few of so-called Aegon fans have also engaged in anti behavior together with certain other stans/shippers in the recent past so…why should I feel bad when Daemon stans start coming after them? Sure, it's hypocrisy for those people to do so and, while I don't like that normal Aegon enjoyers are also getting undeserved hate, well, the others kind of deserve it since they behaved the same way with others.
Same thing can be said when Daemyras go after Alysmonds, and rightly so in my opinion, after the latter just won't stop harassing others and saying BS about how their ship is going to be "the healthiest relationship in the show" (yes there are people saying this) simply for not being "incestuous grooming like Daemyra". Maybe if team black stans start doing this more, they will finally wake up and realize how awful it feels when they're doing it too to others in their very own part of the fandom (team green).
did the aegonthinker account do anything egregious though? because from what i scrolled through, there was just a handful of innocuous aegonposting and they were getting flamed over a book quote
as for feeling schadenfreude when awful people are at each others' throats, i suppose it's a natural reaction that arises out of frustration. i absolutely relate to feeling petty from time to time so it's not like i'm immune. daemyra v alysmond is definitely going to be.... interesting :))
i can't say i've catalogued each and every aegon stan on twitter so perhaps there are a few who should check themselves but i'd imagine their numbers are significantly less just by virtue of the greens having a smaller fanbase

Hi! Sorry for bothering you but I’m curious ,what are your thoughts on Otto and Alicent’s relationship? Because I think we have the same vision .
Have a good day/night !
omg not a bother at all! i love talking about my favorite blorbos <3
i mostly look at alicent's and otto's interactions with the lense of how alicent treats aegon later on (because he is most like her- it's so obvious). turns out the poison drips through.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
young alicent only had otto, they seemed to be quite close too. it seems that she doesn't seem to have any other adult influences in her life -> once he left, she latched onto another male adult influence; larys strong (yuck!!!)
Tumblr media
war of the foxes – richard siken
otto is a second son- set to never inherit anything and remain irrelevant. he obviously can't have that, so he rises through the ranks; no matter the cost. He goes to the point of sending his daughter into the bed chambers of the king (in the book he also had her sent to actual geriartic pervert jaehaerys, yuck!) he is very similar to petyr baelish; a scheming social climber
marrying alicent off was the means to an end to see his blood on the throne -> he does say there will be war if rhaenyra ascends because he thinks the realm won't accept a woman. i do think he somewhat believes that, but seeing his own blood on the throne is his main goal, alicent is the vessel for that dream.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
so what does he do? he scares alicent, he scares her by saying her sons will be sent to the wall or will be murdered or another horrible thing. he makes weary of rhaenyra, makes the two girls (then women) grow apart more and more. he needs alicent to act like he does, think like he does.
and what does alicent do? she played her role perfectly. she does what he asks her to do, how could she not? he is her father. the cycle continues, she subjects her kids to the same abuse and fears her father subjected her to; it's the only love she knows.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
what does aegon do? he turns into a mess, whoring and drinking all day, weary of responsibility. alicent can't understand. why isn't he like her? why did he grow into what she wanted him to grow into? why isn't he like her? i once saw somebody on here say (i can't link the source; can't find it, sorry!):
she was a stradivarius in her father's hand. aegon is a dull knife in hers.
