Rebbie's Wrestling Reviews - Matches I Loved
Konosuke Takeshita def. Darby Allin by pinfall in 12:50 - AEW Dynamite 1-24 (3/1/24)
Take a man who makes everything look like it hurt. Add a man who makes everything look like it hurt him (frequently because it does). The result is obviously brilliant. Spots like the outside dive counter with a knee strike by Takeshita, or the flip out counter by Darby made this an exciting match all the way through! Takeshita is one of my favourite wrestlers on the planet and I really hope he’s going to get a sustained push going forward, maybe finally capitalise on those victories over Kenny Omega last year. But this was a brilliantly hard-hitting match all the way through, and I loved it. It probably won’t be match of the year, but it was an awesome TV match that kicked off 2024 very well for AEW Dynamite, in what was a pretty great episode!

So apparently NXT drew 900k to AEW's 600k on tv (no mention of Fite or BR streams) meaning that they 'win'. Which is a shame because it would've been super funny if they lost.
And it'll matter a whole amount of 0
But I'm sure WWE tribalist stans will celebrate their 11 in 63-11 win over AEW on their regular day after throwing top starts like Cena and exhuming the Undertaker at their so-called 'Developmental', I still preferred Dynamite.

A Slept-On Review: AEW Dynamite 8/24/22
Tumblr media
Chris Jericho and Daniel Garcia Promo
Chris Jericho is here to get Daniel to “just apologize” for his wavering loyalty. Daniel shows a real conflict. He’s not wanting to apologize, but not sure about walking away. Bryan Danielson comes out to get him to see that he, and the crowd, think he can be so much: a wrestler. I agree. Daniel snaps and pushes Jericho to the crowd, standing on his own. Hopefully, he’ll be standing with the BCC soon enough.
Dax Harwood vs Jay Lethal
Surprisingly, this was a hidden gem. Between meaning very little as a match by itself, and a card where so much happens, they used their time well.  Lethal is a cheeky motherfucker, winning this match with a grab on the tights. After the match, we learn that Motor City Machine Guns are joining Lethal for the Trio Tag Team Chaimoship tournament. The crowd, and social media in general, seem quite excited about this. However, I have no idea who they are! Guess it’s research time.
Thunder Rosa Backstage
Thunder Rosa is injured and I am devastated. You can tell from the tears in her eyes, that this announcement was so hard to make. I’ve seen some criticism that she did not get as much time or fanfare as, say, CM Punk. To a point, I understand that and think that it is unfair. However, I wonder if Rosa wanted it that way. The words seemed so hard for her to get out, fairly, and maybe this was simply all she could do.
Billy Gunn vs Colton Gunn
From the beginning, this match had weird energy but was logical in the state of the current story. Really, I felt bad for Billy the whole time. He did great, but he’s clearly not in his prime anymore. Stokley runs in and causes a chain of shenanigans, leading to a victory for Colton. Swerve and Keith beat up the ensuing brawl.
We get a backstage segment of Death Triangle, and more specifically Pac, being scary and threatening ahead of their match with United Empire.
Dr. Britt Baker D.M.D vs KiLynn King
I love Britt! I love KiLynn! This match was not the best they could do, but average. Obviously, it meant very little in the grand story, but there are two major takeaways. First, Britt Baker’s win allows for some momentum going into the match for the interim champion at All Out. I do not want her to win, but if a heel is going to take it she is first in line. Secondly, AEW really needs to sign KiLynn. She’s done enough to deserve it.
Jon Moxley vs CM Punk
We start with one of my biggest loves in this business, a contesting chant of participants' supporters. The added imagery of them circling each other like sharks adds to the energy. This was set up to be a hard-fought slog. Mox starts losing it on Punk in the corner, and while we get some Punk aggression back, Mox gets some major unique power moves in.
AND THEN IT’S OVER
Jon Moxley is officially AEW’s Undisputed Champion.
If I didn't have the knowledge there was more on the card, I would have expected this to last the full hour the show had left. I worry, as I’ve seen many others do too, that Punk has reinjured himself or simply wasn't ready to come back.
Regardless, Punk’s time is up, and Mox’s time is now.
I had to, he said it himself!
Ricky Starks Promo
Poor Ricky getting the death spot after all the emotions wore off and I was just left exhausted. Regardless, the passion is so there. There is a tangible hurt in his voice. He has accepted Hobbs turning against him, and it seems their feud has formally begun.
Also Christian has officially challenged Jungle Boy to a match at All Out, because of course he has.
Death Triangle vs United Empire
They’re flipping! They’re slapping! They’re brawling! Both teams' expected elements in a beautiful, loud, harmony. Osprey’s reactions were lovely, especially when there was so much to digest. His being over the top made things so much easier to follow. This may be because I haven't followed Ospreay in quite a while, but him meeting his opponent's eyes with that still intensity, not moving for a minute while the crowd goes nuts? That sends me back. After the match, we have a stare-down between The Elite and United Empire. Or, more specifically, Ospreay and Omega.
Shoutout to that poor kid dressed as Kip. He looked terrified.

Dynamite 170 -- Jan 4/23
Say what you will, Jericho can still put a guy over and make it mean something. Starks is the very deserving recipient of a rub here. Pretty Ricky 4eva. (Starks v Jericho -- ***1/2)
Same goes for checks notes -- Jeff Jarrett? The trio of JJ, Lethal and Dutt are hilariously effective as old school heat magnets. Fuckin'… fucking… JEFF JARRETT, you could hear the arena crying. Anyway this was surprisingly great. (The Acclaimed v Lethal & Jarrett **1/2)
Danielson turns Tony Nese (NR) into hamburger, the rare squash signalling the escalation of his feud against MJF, who obliges and leaves the door open just enough that Danielson establishes his own caveat, he will gladly go the distance against any and all challenge, he's basically loading the ankle weights and vest on at this point, I can't wait.
Swerve v AR Fox (****) was sublime, would be my pick for MOTN, they have the kind of chemistry where they're pretty rough with each other, less smooth but still incredibly athletic, properly stunning manuevers here-- Swerve hitting Fox with an apron DVD was nuts. These guys both remind me of like, Sabu, a little? Less botchy, but similar flirtations with the limit? Anyway I like the implied story here, not sure if there were promos before but the way AEW likes to bring back ‘people from the past’ to test guys on upward trajectories (thinking Juice showing up almost exclusively to fight Mox) remains really effective booking.
The Gunns have 'vanquished' FTR from AEW and are coming into their own as in-ring promo guys, just great little jerks.
Jade & Velvet v Skye Blue & Kiera Hogan (*1/2) was prefaced by weekly announcements and condolences and was notable mostly for a lack of chemistry betwixt Jade and Kiera and Red Velvet's sudden but inevitable betrayal. Good luck with that, Velvet.
Darby Allin v Samoa Joe (****) in the main event to become new TNT champion -- an incredible match-up of styles, both close to the ideal opponent for each other: vicious and remorseless slugger versus a small and unrelenting challenger. Big hug for the Stinger, just... good stuff. Darby's gonna drop that belt again pretty quick, be interested to see who pops their head up.

Indie Promotion Round Up - Edition 1 Part 3 - NWA USA
This is a continuation from my last post. Check it out here!
Well, that only leaves one more show for this week. Back to the NWA for NWA USA, season 5, episode 1. NWA takes a cue from MLW and gives us no time to process that Kyle Davis is again here, this time with the United States Tag Team champions. Yeah, as I mentioned before, the NWA has midcard tag belts.
Anyways, The Fixers are the champs. FTR were called The Fixers in NXT, but this isn’t them – I hope they’re a fraction as good as FTR. This team is made up of Jay Bradley, who’s had appearances in WWE, IMPACT and ROH in the past, but was just a jobber. Instead, he mostly spent his time in OVW (both the WWE and IMPACT owned incarnations) and IWA Mid South. His partner is Wrecking Ball Legursky, who’s mostly worked North East Wrestling.
They’re gonna face The Country Gentlemen. Wrecking Ball does a joke calling out country musicians, not The Country Gentlemen, but I didn’t know that’s what he was doing, so. Probably the worst promo I’ve seen in this set of shows so far, I have negative interest in these guys.
The intro to USA has a more solemn acoustic guitar song, for some reason. But then there’s another intro right after with more generic electric guitars? It’s a bit confounding. We have the same commentary team.
The Country Gentlemen come to the ring. They’re cowboys. They’ve done even less than their opponents in their careers in terms of working notable promotions. I won’t bother naming the Country Gentlemen, but Jay Bradley is in the ring first for The Fixers. He lands a cheap shot and tags out. The two attack Gentleman A. Legursky picks up Jay as if he’s going to slam him, but stops for some reason.
They keep the attack on Gentleman A. Jay tags back in. Apparently they’re working the neck of Gentleman A. Another tag, more attacks, another tag, more attacks. I will admit I’m not calling all the moves, but they really are just wailing on Gentleman A, basically. Nothing too notable has been omitted from my summary.
The Fixers do tag team based offence where Jay shoves Gentleman A’s face into Wrecking Ball’s ass. I’m not even being snide, that’s legitimately their tactic, on some Rikishi stuff. Anyways, hot tag to Gentleman B. He hits a power slam for the first cover, a two count. He then tags in Gentleman A. Gentleman A attacks Jay in the corner, but Gentleman B comes in to tell him that’s not cool.
Are you kidding me? No one knows who these two are. Why are we working a dissension storyline with a team we’ll probably never see again? Plus, he didn’t really do anything worse than The Fixers were doing to him earlier.
Anyways, The Fixers take advantage of their quarrel and hits Gentleman A for the win. That was a stupid match. It was boring, and then The Fixers only won because The Gentlemen argued, so that doesn’t really make them look all that strong. I don’t really want to see these guys again anytime soon.
--
After a merch ad like the one from Powerrr, we get a women’s match with no introductions. Missa Kate vs Madi. Madi was known as Madi Wrenkowski on AEW – no idea why she got rid of the last name – and was mostly on Dark, but has been on NWA more recently. Misa has also had a couple of Dark matches.
Apparently these two were a tag team, and at Hard Times lost a match for the Women’s tag titles. They both jockey for an early pin, but get back up to their feet to exchange holds. Misa gets a rollup for a two. Madi then gets her on a submission on the mat where they do more reversals. Madi gets a 1 count on two different occasions.
They get up and Madi hits Misa. Misa then takes her to the mat to clobber her some. Misa then takes control, sending Madi to the corner, but Madi gets the power, getting Misa into the corner. Madi attacks her some more for a two count.
Madi goes for a pin, but the ref notices she has her feet on the ropes. Madi guys for a big boot, the Reality Check, which I guess is her finisher, but Misa hits her finisher, the Kick Filet (a roundhouse) for the win. It was alright, better than the first match, but nothing amazing. I haven’t written off either of these women, but I’m not clamouring for more. They have a handshake and hug after the match, but Madi feigns an attack on Misa, but ultimately doesn’t.
--
May Valentine is backstage with the Thrillbilly, Silas Mason. He gets to face Cyon for the national title. He fits the NWA brand, since he looks like he comes from the territory days. He’s apparently managed by Pollo Del Mar, a manager who does drag who’s appearing for the likes of GCW and Hoodslam. This guy must be a heel, because he says he wouldn’t bring her to a stinkhole city like this. He also wants to know what nation Cyon is from. Is he racist? Maybe.
Another ad for Austin Idol’s school. After that, here comes Homicide. He’s a legend on the indies and was mostly in TNA and ROH for stints. I’ve seen a bit of him, but not a lot. He’s here facing Jace Valor. Jace is another Wildcat guy.
Homicide lost the Junior Heavyweight title at Hard Times. Homicide takes him to the corner, but is called off. He does it again, biting him this time. They go to the outside. Homicide wants to attack him with the ring bell, but the ref says no. He then slams Jace on the table, though and then tries throwing a chair at him.
Homicide does more biting. Jace runs the ropes a bit and hits a dropkick. He goes to the top rope and hits a sort of crossbody for a one count. Homicide is back in control and does some more biting. They go to the outside again, where Homicide hits a scoop and a slam. Homicide gets him back in the ring, smothering him in the ring apron and loses via DQ.
Homicide keeps raging and yelling. The audio keeps cutting out, so I guess MLW can swear, but NWA can’t. Probably due to the extra networks they’re on. They ARE both on youtube, but they also have deals with other streaming services.
The highlight of the episode comes when Homicide steals a fan’s jacket, so Joe tells us, “Well, it is cold here”. I didn’t mention it, but NWA has clickbaity titles – the episode of Powerrr I watched was called “We have a new world champ”. Alright, that’s true. This episode of USA was subtitled “He took us off the air”. When Homicide was causing a ruckus, the screen flashed as if he damaged the cameras, so I was expecting it to hard cut off, even if it was in kayfabe, but it didn’t, so that was a letdown.
--
Another main event, another angle set up. I don’t tally how often main events are used to set up angles, but I noticed that pattern here as I paid attention to writing down the events of these three shows. But if WWE or AEW or any other promotion I’ve seen do it, they sure don’t do it to this level.
For example, on the most recent episode of AEW Dynamite, Claudio came out to stop Jericho from attacking someone. But that was after Jericho had a decent sized, decent quality match with Tomohiro Ishii. All of these just use the main event for an angle.
I get it, they don’t have 2 hours like AEW Dynamite does, they don’t even have a total hour for any of these shows, and to be fair to MLW, that was one episode as opposed to the two here of NWA, but both these companies could learn to not just use their main event as an angle and give us a bit more action.
Though, as I mentioned, MLW’s was less egregious. I have nothing more to say about this episode of USA, so I guess it’s time for the final verdicts. The best overall show was MLW. As I said, the opening match was great and the segments were pretty good. It had its flaws, but I do want to see more. The worst was the episode of NWA USA. I didn’t really like anything and it felt like any random old indie show. The best performer would probably go to La Estrella, the worst going to The Fixers.
I’m not going to lie, MLW was better than I thought, and NWA was worse. I thought the NWA would be funny bad, but it was just average at best, and genuinely bad with no ironic enjoyment at worst. If I do make this a series, I’m not paying a lot of attention to the NWA. I wouldn’t mind either recapping their PPVs or their weekly shows with much less detail, but the thought of doing both doesn’t appeal to me at all – so if you have any suggestions, let me know.
I would try and find another promotion to replace my coverage of NWA, but I don’t really want to watch IMPACT as I’m not a fan, nor larger promotions because that’s a larger undertaking with people already working on it. On the other end, I don’t want to cover an indie promotion with a weekly show like OVW or Reality of Wrestling, as while I’m sure there are some talented wrestlers there, unless I’m sure it’ll be an entertaining watch, I don’t really want to sit through a bunch of wrestlers on a smaller stage still honing their craft – that’s why I don’t want to keep up with NWA!
I was considering covering notable indie promotions instead like Warrior Wrestling, House of Glory, GCW or Prestiege, but while they do have some storylines, I feel due to not having weekly TV, I wouldn’t be as interested in covering them.
If you have any suggestions for a replacement for NWA, let me know – hell, maybe I’ll cover an older defunct promotion, like Smokey Mountain Wrestling, or HUSTLE. Until then, I’ll try to be back in a week with MLW coverage if nothing else – I might just focus on getting up to date on the most recent episode while I work out what supplementary content to check out. See you next time!

Rebbie's Wrestling Reviews - Matches I Loved
"Hangman" Adam Page vs. Swerve Strickland w/ Prince Nana for the Number One Contendership to the AEW World Championship went to a time limit draw at 30:00 - AEW Dynamite 6-24 (7/2/2024)
These two wrestlers are the two AEW stars I'm most invested in across the whole company going into 2024. Coming off of their pair of brilliant matches last year, they both know each other really well. Some awesome counters and jabs at one another throughout add a great spice to this one. The story is what really elevates this one though. Swerve is hung up on Hangman's words, and wants to beat him with no underhanded tactics. Hangman is desperate to finally beat Swerve. As the match goes on though, we see this twist, as it becomes clear that beyond just beating Swerve, Hangman just wants to stop him winning. Sure, he'd love the world title opportunity, but more than anything he doesn't want Swerve to have it... and if he can really mess up Swerve and Nana along the way, so be it. This all comes together in the ending, where Swerve's excellent wrestling comes up just short as the bell rings a second before he can potentially claim victory. Swerve almost sounds choked up and he suggests five more minutes with Hangman, something he'd surely accept. However, Hangman is almost manic as he relishes that Swerve still hasn't beaten him and will not be getting his shot. It's a brilliant sorta-double-turn that almost garners sympathy for the nefarious Swerve. I loved it, and the 30-minute runtime flew by. Very excited for what is now a triple threat at Revolution: Swerve vs. Hangman vs. Samoa Joe
