When we started our journey with our children to discover the world, including African history, which is often overlooked in the US, we could not find anything geared towards children... until we stumbled upon this collection by The Rosen Publishing Group. Although for advanced children and adults, it is a must have for any real teacher of the world. Unfortunately, it is now out of print so most copies we found are retired copies from libraries. We will explore with you this collection one volume at a time. We believe that one cannot be a global citizen until everyone is included in “global.” Here is our contribution ❤️ Hope you like it. . #childrensbooks #blackchildrensbooks #africanchildrensbook #diversitybooks https://www.instagram.com/p/COLM3LhncZv/?igshid=1kr5p081dxvdu

Based on the true tale of an African-Chinese-Cuban girl in the 1930s who defied Cuba’s ban on female drummers and formed Cuba’s first all-female dance band, this book is a fantastic, lyrical tale of a girl who dreams of music, inspired by the conga, bongo, and timbale drums of her island and the heartbeats of nature all around her. While the girl's dreams never falter through the book, as she constantly imagines herself drumming joyfully on everything from traditional drums to the table, the moon and even flowers, the chronological plot shows the barriers to her dreams as well, as her father initially denies her playing with the male children of the island, she watches men play at cafés where she cannot go, she joins her sisters' all-female jazz dance band but is again prohibited by her father, and then finally her father's acquiescence as he offers her a music teacher. From there, the story progresses to the fulfillment of her dreams, as her African teacher is amazed by her natural gift and teaches her more and more until finally, cautiously and proudly, he sends her to play her drums at an outdoor café, where people respond joyfully to her music and others - both girls and boys - are inspired. This book is especially exemplary in its wonderful depiction of the drum dream girl's three cultures, Chinese, Cuban and African, and depicts each in its illustrations - while her Cuban island, where she lives, gets the most coverage, her Chinese and African heritage are depicted as well, with Chinese New Year celebrations chasing her across one page, Afro-Cuban drummers lighting up a café with their music, an African drum teacher clad in traditional clothing, and multicultural faces everywhere in the story. Throughout the story, the illustrations seem to come alive, blending colorful pictures of her vibrant town with the fantastical elements of her dreams and imaginings as the story unfolds. #africanchildrensbooks #weneeddiversebooks #diversekidlit #diversechildrensliterature #feministchildrensbooks #diversitymatters https://www.instagram.com/p/CBJQCU0nLc2/?igshid=19s032w19qunk

Super happy to be sharing the #InstaStoryBook @nanziwemzuzu and I had the opportunity to create together. As part of Hollard’s #BetterFutures initiative, they teamed up with Kago Ya Bana (a programme aimed at improving the lives of young children in the Midvaal area) to create easily accessible children’s books, enabling young South African children to read more. You can see our complete storybook in our Instagram stories and what’s cool is that you can also create your own story and submit it under the hashtag #InstaStoryBooks to @HollardGram. Each unique story will make an impact in someone’s life. “If people were silent, nothing would change” with these powerful words of Malala, starts the journey into Herstory, by Katherine Halligan and Sarah Walsh. This book is perfect for advanced young readers and adults alike, but it can also be read to an early reader. It is an uplifting recount of the lives of fifty powerful women around the globe and across time. It tells the story of their youth, challenges they faced and their achievements. From ancient Egypt with Hatshepsut to Coco Chanel in French fashion, to Elizabeth Blackwell the first British Born American doctor the stories of these women will surely inspire girls and boys alike. . #childrensbooks #blackchildrensbooks #africanchildrensbook #diversitybooks #sarahwalshillustrator #katherinehalligan #simonandschuster #simonandschusterbooks https://www.instagram.com/p/COB8-bnAU9Q/?igshid=z2htmioih6cl

Chicken in the kitchen is not a cookbook ☺️. It is the story of Anyaugo, a little girl from Nigeria who investigates the intrusion of a mischievous spirit in her home. Colorful drawings by Mehtdokht Amani and beautiful story by Nnedi Okorafor. Contains cultural references to the traditional Yam Festival in Nigeria. A must have in your collection. . #childrensbooks #blackchildrensbooks #africanchildrensbook #diversitybooks #nnediokoraforbooks #mehrdokhtamini #lantanapublishing https://www.instagram.com/p/CN7jCt2A7Vd/?igshid=10dij1ru41hot
