The tweeds and plaids really bring to mind a rustic countryside motif: a little bit shabby, a little bit chic. It gives the garment a very sartorial structure, at the same time a warm familiar character. Overall the garment is an amalgamation of various style, art, film, and literary influences, which is pretty evident through this eclectic assemblage of elements, but still manages to capture and retain the emblematic silhouette of the national terno.

Two Save A Lot stores in southern Dallas are closing, increasing food insecurity

Two Save A Lot grocery stores that were supposed to help alleviate food insecurity in southern Dallas are closing after two years under new ownership.

Save A Lot’s parent company, Moran Foods LLC, began selling off most of its company-owned stores in 2020, transferring ownership to licensees and shifting to a “wholesale model.”

Southern Dallas has struggled for years with food insecurity, the limited or uncertain availability of nutritionally adequate and safe food, as the U.S. Department of Agriculture described. Nonprofit organizations in Dallas generally have tried to fill the gap, stepping up with drive-throughs and free food pantries, and the City of Dallas has used severalinitiatives that have tried cash offers to lure grocery stores to the area.

The loss of two stores in an already vulnerable part of the city will put more pressure on those agencies and the city, and leaves some residents worried about how the neighborhoods will thrive.Related:Dallas planning to buy grocery store in food desert and try something new

Yellow Banana acquired the two stores on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard and South Lancaster Road by the end of 2021 to renovate them and provide affordable fresh food in neighborhoods with less access to food, The News reported at the time.

In an email statement, Save A Lot wrote, “We take the decision to close a store location very seriously. We recognize the impact this closure will have on the community we serve, and we remain committed to providing high-quality and fresh, affordable food options at our other locations.”

Yellow Banana did not respond to requests for comment.

Less affordable options

A bright orange flier on the South Lancaster Road Save A Lot door reads, “Store Closing 2.28.24″ and several others with “50% off on meats, frozen, grocery and produce section.” The grocery store that sits in an empty parking lot next to a small convenience store and a CSL Plasma donation center will close Feb. 28.

Garcia said she plans to shop at the Fiesta Mart that is about a half mile away or a 12-minute walk from the Save A Lot.

“It might not be far, but when you have your groceries and are walking, you need to stop and rest. The 15 minutes can end up being like 25 or 30,” said Garcia.

Residents were surprised by the abrupt closure and now wonder about plans for the property.

In City Council District 4, where the Lancaster Road store is located, about 49% of the population is Hispanic, and 45% is African American. The a median household income of $32,173, lower than the city as a whole.

For Raquel Delgado, 53, the store’s closure means finding another place to buy affordable meat to feed her family. She already shopped at nearby stores like Fiesta Mart and Walmart, always looking for the best deals. Save a Lot was her stop for cheap meat.

“I am a regular shopper in this place. Every week, I come for beef because they have the best price,” Delgado said. “Last week, I paid $8 for a package of beef for Milanesa. In other stores, they cost between $15 to $20.”

Delgado said she found out about the store’s closing from the cashier.

In Dallas County, about 25% of children experiencing hunger are African American, while 18% are Hispanic and 7% are white, according to the 2023 report by Children at Risk.

‘Food apartheid’

The North Texas Food Bank reports that Dallas County has the fourth-highest rate of food insecurity among children in the country.

About 15.5% of Texas households were food insecure between 2020 and 2022, ranking higher than the national average of 11.5%, according to a national survey conducted by the Department of Agriculture.

The other Save a Lot, located less than five miles away on Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard, closed its doors on February 16, according to the company. The store is now empty.

The closures are part of what Tammy Johnson, founder and executive director of Empowering the Masses, calls, “food apartheid.”

Empowering the Masses is a nonprofit organization in South Dallas that six years ago began to operate a food pantry and help residents find solutions for sustainable and long-term food security.

“I don’t call it a food desert. I call it a food apartheid because it’s purposely done. Food apartheid is a term used to describe a system of segregation that divides those who have easy access to nutritious food and those who do not because of what advocates say is systemic injustice.

Johnson said about 300 families come to the Empowering the Masses pantry each week for help, with a high need for fresh produce and meat.

The former Save A Lot located at 3021 Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd, is in City Council District 7, where 51% of residents are Hispanic and 38% are African-American, with a median household income of $39,332.

For Shiela Sexton, 73, whose home is a block behind the store, the closure forces her to look for other grocery options.

“I’ve lived here my whole life, and it’s always the same. Stores come and go,” Sexton said. “And we have to scramble to find solutions. Maybe someday the neighborhood will thrive.”

On that vesper day me and Arniec went to plaza to enjoy that vesper day and to watch any events on that day. We decided to go to baybay boulevard but we just walk on there and it was so hot on that day . We thought it has bangkarera but we'd disappointed when we're there because there's nothing. We decided to have some rest and take some pictures. And after we take pictures we go back to plaza to watch again the padul-ong fiestival.

We went to the fair on Baybay Boulevard to enjoy some of the rides, including the Vikings and the Ferris wheel. The rides were a lot of fun. And we pay to die
