12) favourite character to write about this year.

Hmmm probably Hyrule, surprisingly. "Surprisingly" in that thinking it through, I didn't actually write much from his perspective? I did think about it a lot though, and he'll have a few special moments (teehee) coming up in the chapters I'll hopefully get to sometime soon.

I love both halves of the Downfall Duo (plus Wild as the bonus third half, as a treat), but the extra fun thing about the version of Hyrule that lives in my head is that the more I delve into his personality, the more Problems(tm) he develops. Like: yeah he's pretty well-adjusted, hmmm he's a little traumatised actually, oops he's reeeeal bad at processing difficult emotions, wow maybe that clinginess is liiittle bit unhealthy -

25) a fic you read this year you would recommend everyone read.

Hmm... I read a bunch of fics this year, but for the purpose of recommendations I'll start with "What Hero?" by AimeeLouWrites on the basis that if you like my fics you will probably also like this one:

It's a Linked Universe "chain meets Wild' fic where the premise is Wild evading the quest through committing to a bunch of ridiculous lies about how the hero doesn't exist. Lots of light-hearted fun plus a few gentle servings of angst. Slightly heavier angst in a similar work by the same author called "Child's Play". But yeah I would feel pretty confident that anyone who a) enjoyed my fic "In Which Wild Avoids Meeting the Gang", and b) either doesn't mind or actually enjoys seeing the same/similar trope repeated (and imo that's the literary comfort food I go to AO3 for) would enjoy reading this.

As for other recs... if you like whumpy hurt/comfort, I've been rereading some of CluelessMoose's fics recently:

And a fic I started reading a few years ago (Undertale fandom) updated earlier today so I'm going to go ahead and link that one too. It's a long ongoing fic about Sans and Papyrus growing up in the aftermath of the war between humans and monsters. Has some tasty angst, more based on their situation than the existence of an antagonist, and plenty of cute moments. Read if you like fics about children being clever and independent; avoid if the lack of adult carers or scenes of harm/risk to children may be triggering. Content warning also for malnutrition/starvation; it's not super extreme, but it's there.

Going to go with CluelessMoose, linked above. See my favourite thing to do with whump fics is to go back to particular scenes I remember and like and reread them as a bedtime story. Hell yeah, put those characters in situations!!

Man do I have many favourite lines, but most of them don't work as single sentences D: So I'll put them under the read more!

💕What is your favourite fic you've written?:

Hmm... Most of my fics are self indulgent... Probably Underground, which I posted on Ao3, but the original version where they're not all JoJo characters! Or Heroes of Sword and Shield, which is my Pokemon x BT crossover. Or Heart's Beat, in which Joseph and Kars fight a stand that uses music to fight. Or the one where my OCs confessed to each other. Ugh, I have so many but I don't post any cause they're entirely self indulgent XD

🥳Why did you start writing fanfic?:

Easy! To put my favourite characters in the same story! I came up with a crazy crossover AU at the age of 10 or 11 and never let go of it. Originated with Sonic, Megaman, Megaman X, NiGHTS and Pit, but now it's mainly Sonic, Joseph, Allen and Mu. It was the first fic I ever wrote actually! Not sure if I should ever post it because it was... a trip. But! It had a lot of lore that I still use to this day! It's somehow still one of my main AUs, and the name has stayed as the Dimensional Defenders for all these years!

📚 Is there a fanfic or fanfic writer you recommend?:

First of all, I recommend you, @nibwhipdragon, for good Joseph content because MAN do you write abt stuff I only think abt. For Caejose, I recommend Riette! For Final Fantasy VII AUs, I recommend AimeeLouWrites! Also Battle Tendency But It's in College and is Almost Nothing Like Battle Tendency... is really good! I also recommend anything that's on my Ao3 bookmarks!

💛 What is the most impactful lesson you've learned about writing?:

Good question... A lesson from writing? Maybe to be patient and to let the story unfold. Sometimes you'll get a spark of inspiration, and when that happens you take it on full storm!

🎨 If someone were to make fanart of your work, what fic or scene would you hope to see?:

Dude I would LOVE fanart for one of my AUs. Alas! No one sees them D: That or fanart for my OCs...

The hedgehog looked down, only to see...

Allen's disembodied head. "Hello."

"Oh, hey Allen!" Sonic grinned.

"You named the heartless Shrimp?!" She almost scolded, ready to call upon her magic.

"Yeah, 'cause he's just a small guy!" The heartless in his arms cooed quietly. "Can I keep him? Please please please?"

"No! Now put it down before you get hurt!"

"Do we all need to get clothes?"

Everyone in the room stared at Sonic. A chorus of "Yep" and "Of course" resounded around the room.

"By the power of the Joestars," His sword emerged in his hand and he lowered into a fighting position. "I ANNOUNCE YOU DIED! Wait a minute..."

There was a pause. Then a snicker. Then Joseph, Kars and Caesar laughed.

"NO!" Caesar shouted through laughs as his voice peaked in the Discord call. "YOU DID NOT JUST DO THAT!"

Turning back towards the duo, I noticed Joseph shaking. Caesar cradled him like a scared cat, seemingly unsure what to do with him.

~

This was followed by Allen walking into his classroom that had all the chairs in test positions. Lovely.

"I'm going to get glitter all over the English block," Allen said, playfully deadpan as he attempted to flick glitter off his hands. He continued in the same tone, "I shouldn't have said that next to an open classroom."

Sonic let out a loud laugh. "Joseph should never be allowed glitter. It's just that he has loads of money."

~

"Zamazenta likes coke." Caesar stated as if it was a normal, day-to-day fact.

~

Cloud facepalmed. "And that's how the gang were defeated. They rode into a chasm and died."

Zack whined as Cloud reset from the last save point.

~

His mind was a frenzy, a blur as he panicked and tried to save himself. He couldn't process what was going on. Without thinking, he used his hand to break the plate.

And then he popped back at home.

Cloud, who was building the house, witnessed him appear next to him. "What did you do?"

Chrom scratched his head. "Uh... Pumpkin...?"

Cloud facepalmed.

The Lucifenian looked at him in shock; even if he was part wyvern, the winds would rip his boyfr- friend to shreds!

~

It was a bright and sunny day. Birds were singing, flowers were- Okay, enough of the happy crap.

~

So the fae could talk. Check.

"You took me away from my spring, shoved me in a room, and you mean no harm? Bullshit."

And it sweared. Or, rather, he sweared. Check.

~

"For a time I thought I would be alone all my life. Until I met Sonic."

"Aww~!" Joseph cooed.

"But now, thanks to my immortality, I live in fear of outliving him."

"Aww..." Joseph's smile dropped.

~

The swanna crowed. Sonic was quick to translate. "She says you're an idiot who challenged a legendary and needed saving!"

~

"Do I, Angel-Cakes?"

"Call me that again and I will personally send you to hell."

"Sure thing, Angel-Cakes!"

~

Heartbroken: Many things leave people heartbroken, including when: - Your friend backstabs you - That girl you likes turns you away - You get married to two ancient beings and your heart will explode in a month Joseph sighed. Just the usual.

In the end they forgot that Sonic stole Caesar's flag and he succeeded in his attempts.

Cloud staggered his way into the next world and caught himself on familiar stone walls. He turned to see the familiar church full of flowers. No pool, but at least it was someplace cool and private. He began the first of many cure spells to close up his wounds.

“Oh, dang! Those look pretty bad. Let me take a look at them!”

Cloud blinked and looked up. A young woman with wild, black, shoulder-length hair dressed in a loose T-shirt and comfortable pants. She was taller than he was and looked vaguely familiar.

“I can handle it,” Cloud told the woman, and cast a few more times. “Just point me to some food when I’m done.”

“Nah, let me help,” the woman said, throwing an arm around Cloud’s shoulders to herd him to a pew. “That’s way too much for one person to handle on their own, and you never know what you might miss. Sit and I’ll get some clean water.”

Cloud sighed but sat and continued working his way through his injuries. He had enough bloody splinters to start a small fire by the time he cleaned out his leg. Probably from the barn, he thought.

But the woman came bounding back, swinging a pail in a way that somehow kept the water inside instead of sloshing it all over the place. “Okay!” She pulled out a bandana from her pocket and plopped down next to Cloud. “I’ll just start cleaning up this arm… by the way, what’s your name?”

“Cloud.”

“Hey, Cloud. I’m Zack!”

The look he got in return was absolutely priceless. He wished he had a PHS on hand to document it.

FFVII Fic Recs

I’ve been in the fandom now for almost six months and over that time, I have read quite a lot of fics. It occurred to me that it might be nice to do a list of a few of them. I will probably add others at another time, because no one wants to see the state of my bookmarks and most of these I even started pre-ao3.

#1. Just One by SharkbaitSekki (Zakkura)

This was the first fic in the fandom I read and thoroughly enjoyed. I had just finished Crisis Core and was all about the Cloud and Zack feels when I saw this and it fit the bill perfectly for what I wanted. Well characterised, sad, funny, felt like it could almost just be slotted into canon and was a beautiful character showcase for Zack. It also provided me with the answer of how Cloud got dragged around for a year without dying and I kind of went “Oh, yeah. Headcanoned.”.

#2 I’d cheat destiny just to be near you by Luddleston (Zakkura)

This began my love affair with Cloud Strife vs his terrible self esteem. It’s incredibly well written, again it just absolutely nails characterisations and Aerith to the rescue for these idiots in love. I just saw it now has a porny sequel too if you’re into that sort of thing.

#3 we are no heroes by hellbeast

Probably one of my first instances of reading Sephiroth centric work and it’s got such good characterisation of a Saner Sephiroth meets time travel. It was one of the things that made me think ‘hey I really like the trio and Zack, I should read more of them’ which I did. A lot. It’s fun, it feels very in character for the CC world and is an interesting what if?

#4 Divine Comedy by aimeelouwrites

Speaking of time travelling Sephiroth, if you want something that will just fuck you up, this is the fic for you. I’ve reread it three times already and the first time I literally had to get up and walk around to process it. It has demigod!Sephiroth dragging Cloud from the future into his tiny self and all of the fallout. I have to give this one extra credit because I find Angeal really difficult to nail in terms of his voice and this was the series that made me feel like I understood him better. Go check out their other works as well, because while I will do a proper rec for Hey Asshole! next time, it has literally left me in tears laughing.

#5 To Stem the Tide by corvidkohai

I was not expecting this to hit me as hard in the feels. It’s not the first fic of theirs I read, I read several early on without realising it was all the same person writing them (Again, I'll likely include these in later lists but the first I think was The Friendly Ghost and then Smile for the Camera was probably the first time I got really into Cloud/Genesis, with Lights Camera Action being one of my favourite things right now) but I love time travel so much and this is so fun and then it just hit me unexpectedly in the feels.

#6 Angel in the Rafters by skadren (Sefikura)

Featuring MagicalGirl!Cloud and so much whump that is perfectly balanced out with humour. Did I mention I had a thing for time travel fics? I love how long suffering Cloud is in this, like he was all geared up to just take Sephiroth down and then the whump got him. I don't want to spoil this too much but it's just all fun misconceptions, fun characterisations and I am also a sucker for a wingfic.

#7 Cadetship Calamity by AMournfulHowlInTheNight

Possibly the only other thing I enjoy as much as time travel is outsider perspective and this explores the fallout of Cadet Strife who knows way more than he should. Another one which makes me laugh so much. Feral baby time traveling Cloud needs to be it's own section honestly. I don't want to spoil it, but it's just ridiculously fun.

#8 Ghost in the Machine by Zenthisoror

This may have been abandoned, but it was without a doubt one of the most formative takes on Genesis as a character for me. AI Cloud goes back in time is excellent enough as a premise, but even if it's never finished, what's there is worth your time reading.

#9 5 Times Cloud Helps Avalanche (+1 Time They Help Him) by janazza

I think I read this when all I knew was the Remake, but it absolutely holds up. Lovely character study, well written, fun as hell. Cloud trying to pretend he's a merc who Absolutely Does Not Care and totally failing.

#10 Cloud and Sephiroth's Adventures in Time Travel by Interstella

Ever wanted Cloud and Sephiroth as a time travelling buddy comedy? This is for you. Another one of those extremely laugh out loud fics, sassy Cloud and the two of them basically having all the banter. Oh, and at one point, a baby chocabo uses Cloud's hair as a nest and Sephiroth has a cat called Khat, so the adorable factor plays into this too.
