As head of the UNSC’s Office of Naval Intelligence, it was Margaret Parangosky’s business to know things.

She knew the Master Chief was too good to get killed. She knew he would never have let himself be taken alive. She knew that fully-armored Spartans did not simply vanish from the monitors.

Taking all of that together, Margaret knew Sierra One-One-Seven was anything but missing in action.

The admiral had to give Silver Team credit, though. They’d left no trail. Everything looked standard from the moment they boarded the Pelican until the Chief seemingly vanished into thin air. They all had the same story. The same unbelievable story that had little evidence to back it, and somehow also had no evidence to the contrary.

Perhaps the Spartan-II program had trained its operatives too well.

Margaret also knew who had the full story on this if anyone did.

“Jacob.” Margaret entered the office without preamble.

“Margaret,” the captain said, eyes still on the screen in front of him.

“What do you know about this?” Margaret handed him the tablet in her hands.

Jacob studied it for a moment. “This is the report on Silver Team’s latest mission.”

“It lists One-One-Seven as missing in action.”

“I know what it says. I signed it,” Jacob said disinterestedly, handing the tablet back. He still hadn’t looked at her.

Margaret called up a video. “And what do you make of this?” She held the tablet in front of his face.

Jacob gave her an irritated glance and watched the video. “That’s me and the Master Chief in the hangar yesterday.”

“You went into the Pelican.”

“Nothing gets by you, Admiral.”

Margaret crossed her arms. “Do not take me for a fool, Captain Keyes.”

“I take you for a lot of things, Admiral, but a fool’s never been one of them.”

“Then stop pretending I don’t know you’re hiding something.”

Jacob finally looked away from his computer. “Margaret, you and Catherine shanghaied me into this mess because I was good at keeping secrets.”

Margaret leaned forward on the desk. “And what secret are you keeping now?”

Jacob stood up and mirrored her posture. “I’m not keeping a secret.”

Margaret admired his refusal to be intimidated. She always had, even when she was on the wrong end of it. Which seemed to happen more and more of late. “Then what are you keeping?”

Jacob’s countenance softened a little.

“A promise.” --

The "good at keeping secrets" line is a Fall of Reach reference, because I guess I just rampaged through that book poaching fic ideas.

favourite colour: a shade of blue. On the Dulux colour chart, it is either called Sea Blue or Blue Lagoon.

last song/album: no idea what it was called as it was on my son’s Spotify play list. It was very calming, whatever it was.

last movie: ah, a much easier question, despite the number of films I tend to watch in a week. It was called The Comeback Trail; and before that I finally got to see The Perks of Being A Wallflower.

currently reading: I’m about to start reading a murder mystery by Richard Osman, called The Thursday Murder Club. 

currently watching: as I type this I’m watching a programme about the Flying Scotsman. Not exactly a rarity, to be honest. We’ve been avoiding the Euro 2021 games (since none of us are massive football fans) so lots of history documentaries, or films, as not much else is on. I recently watched all of the Norwegian series Ragnorak on Netflix, and we worked our way through all of Motherland (both on Netflix and BBC iPlayer). Inside No. 9 remains a “must see” so I was delighted that it won a BAFTA.

currently craving: well, if you’re putting the kettle on, I’m always up for a cup of tea…

coffee or tea: I can’t do much more than sniff coffee (it’s a migraine trigger) but I’d have picked tea anyway. I’d risk losing my British passport if I didn’t.

why’d you choose your url? Maia, as in the god-like beings from LOTR/Silmarillion, and of Mischief, because I enjoy causing harmless mischief. So, God of Mischief, essentially.

any side blogs? Yes, quite a few honestly. In the little page here there is a full list. However the ones that are active (and not just defunct rp/fan blogs from when that was a thing that I still occasionally post things on out of nostalgia) are:

how long have you been on tumblr? Since April of 2012. Yikes, that’s almost 10 years.

do you have a queue tag? I do not. Generally, almost everything that you see on my blog is something I’ve queued. There are exceptions (usually new posts that I make tend to be posted as soon as I finish them, or if there are a ton of posts at once that’s me blogging live) but I feel like it would be weird if I started doing it now after so long of not having one.

why did you start your blog? hmm. Its been a long time, but there was a blog I had stumbled across that was doing some rp-esque posts (like workplace memos or something) that I liked enough that I wanted to know when they posted new things and beyond that I found all sorts of things to keep my interest and make me want to stay.

why did you choose your icon? The current one is me in cosplay as Revan. I was pretty damn proud of my costume (and still am, honestly, even if I’d more or less redo the whole thing if I ever was doing Revan again) since I made it with literally no help out of craft foam. It really doesn’t look like it was as cheap as it was to make. Eventually, when I have a cosplay I’m more proud of than that, I’ll probably update my icon.

what’s your post with the most notes? That I’ve posted? Probably this one.

how many followers do you have? 194

how many people do you follow? 974, which is both a lot and not a lot, given a lot of them are seasonal blogs or post only very rarely.

have you ever made a shitpost? There are some random ass musings on there that could qualify, but nothing specific comes to mind.

how often do you use tumblr? I check it in the morning and before bed. If I’m having a bad day or a boring day, I’ll probably check it more than that to distract myself.

did you have a funny argument with a blog once? No, I tend not to argue on here.

how do you feel about reblog bait? I hate them, if the general post was good but someone tacked that on in a later reblog, I’ll go back to the source to find one that doesn’t have that garbage on it. If I can’t find one without (like if it is in the original post) I won’t reblog it even if I agree with the general sentiment. I don’t like anyone telling me what I have to do and I like even less the ones that have some sort of scare tactic associated with it. I’m immune to your shitty chain letters, internet, I’ve been getting them in one form or another (email back in the day, on here now) and I’m never going to give into your assholishness.

do you like tag games? Love them. They are a lot of fun. It might take a day or so to answer them (since I tend to do them on my actual computer versus mobile) but I enjoy them a lot.

which one of your moots do you think is tumblr famous? Honestly, couldn’t tell you. Most likely it’d be someone I least suspect. (Also, I’ve never heard the term ‘moots’ to describe mutals before... when did that start? I feel old now.)

do you have a crush on one of your moots? Well, I’m dating one of them... so... does that count?
