Today we celebrate the Holy Hierarch George of Amastris. Saint George was born at Kromne near Amastris in Paphlagonia on the Black Sea in 750. He was the son of pious parents, Theodosios and Megethousa. After completing his primary studies in his homeland, he left for the mountain of Syrikēs, or Sērikḗs (Συρίκης ή Σηρικής). There he found an old ascetic who taught him about the solitary life and tonsured him. After the repose of his Elder, George went to Vonitsa in Akarnania, where he continued his ascetical struggles. In 788, the Bishop of Amastris fell asleep in the Lord, and the Church rewarded George's virtues. Against his will, he was elected as the Bishop of that city, but in the end he submitted to this as God's will. He was consecrated at Constantinople by Patriarch Tarasios (February 25). Upon his return to Amastris, Saint George was like a lamp which is not placed under a bushel, but put on a lampstand, so that it gives light to all those in the house (Matthew 5:15). He instructed his flock, he beautified several churches, defended widows and orphans, and fed the poor. In all things, he was an example of a God-pleasing life. By the power of his prayers he drove away the Saracens who were ravaging the countryside near Amastris. He also rescued some Amastrian merchants who had been wrongfully condemned to death in the city of Trebizond. He also composed several Canons in honor of the Saints, which are sung on February 7 and 26; April 13; August 1; October 8, etc. Saint George went to the Lord peacefully in 805, during the reign of Emperor Nikēphoros I, after shepherding the flock which had been entrusted to him by Christ in a God-pleasing manner. He performed many miracles, both during his lifetime, and after his blessed repose. Well-known for his stance against Covid-vaccines, the Bishop of Aetolia and Akarnania, Kosmas, has died on Covid-19 on Monday morning. The 76-year-old bishop was hospitalized since the beginning of December and his transfer to an ICU bed in Athens had triggered an outrage as other patients were not given this option.

Bishop Kosmas, who had refused to get vaccinated against the virus, was admitted to a hospital in Agrinio on December 1 with Covid-19 infection before being moved to an ICU room at the biggest hospital in Athens, Evangelismos.

He was intubated for 25 days and was taken off recently. He had suffered irreversible damages.

Today we also celebrate the Holy Metropolitan Kallinikos of Edessa. Saint Kallinikos was an ascetic Bishop, who, according to the witnesses, had a venerable repose. The new Venerable Kallinikos was born in Sitaralona, Agrinio in 1918, to a poor family. He graduated from the Theological School of Athens, and was ordained a deacon and a priest by his brother according to the flesh, Metropolitan Konstantinos of Didymoteichos, Orestiados and Soufliou, in 1957. He served as a secretary and Preacher of the Metropolis of Aitolias and Akarnanias during the hierarchy of Metropolitan Theokletos.    On June 25th, 1967, he was ordained Metropolitan of Edessa in the Holy Church of St. Dionysios, the Patron Saint of Athens, succeeding Metropolitan Dionysios of Edessa. His consecration was served by Metropolitan Dionysios of Trikkes and Stagon, together with Metropolitans Meletios of Kythera, Konstantinos of Didymoteichos, Synesios of Kassandreias, and Theokletos of Aitolias and Akarnanias. A few days before his election, the eparchy of Almopias, according to the decision of the Hierarchy of the Church of Greece, was detached from the Metropolis of Florina, and attached to the Metropolis of Edessa. He was a man of almsgiving, prayer, meekness, and had many pastoral activities in his metropolis. He was also very careful with his ordinations, and he had within him love and the fear of God. His spiritual children are many. He left a good and virtuous memory through his monastic life, and example for clergy and laity to imitate.
