Matchup for @irisbunker!
Tumblr media
@irisbunker : hey! if it isn’t too much trouble, could i have a romantic/platonic matchup w a student? I’m a 5’2” bi gal with a mop of dark brownblack wavy/curly jaw length hair i wanna dye rose goldish. i’ve got brown eyes and clear framed glasses. I have scars all over my body, some being self harm whilst most are from accidents i had as a child (my most notable ones are a scar on my upper lip and one on my right hand). my fingers are usually covered in bandaids as i bite my nails and the skin around it I have depression/anxiety, and i’m a pretty spacey person. i tend to ramble often and act blunt unintentionally, though i frequently apologize in case i say anything i feel could’ve been offensive to the person im speaking to. I also second guess myself constantly, resulting in a need for reaffirmation that people care about me and clinginess, esp in a relationship. in a relationship id act very flustered with pda yet still crave it, settling for locking pinkies. to me it’s the small things that matter, and i always tell the people i love i care about them and often do so more than i care for myself. others well being is more important than mine in my opinion, and i try my best to listen to their issues and give the best advice i can. im interested in writing, reading, ukulele/guitar/singing, psychology, astrology, cats, and human nature. i have a tendency to analyze people’s motives and personality; thanks to it i can get a relatively good grasp of a person. im emotionally vulnerable and often feel lonely due to my depression, and have been using writing poems/songs as a coping mechanism. sorry if this got too personal ahajha, but thank you in advance!!^^
Of course darling! I do hope you enjoy and have a nice day, love! 💖💝💕
For your romantic matchup, I ship you with Ochako Uraraka! 💘
Tumblr media
WHY’D YOU’D WORK
You and Uraraka are similar yet different, able to relate to one another through your commonalities yet balance each other with what you don’t share. Uraraka is patient and warm, willing to listen to your ramblings without annoyance—in fact, she’d find it cute. She’s not one easily offended, as she too is blunt, and would constantly reassure you that your own straightforwardness, intentional or not, is nothing to apologize for. As you’re one to give advice, you’d try and help her conserve herself and budget her money in a safer way than just skipping meals and missing out on life. Both of you care about others before yourself, and it would lead you two to fulfilling the care for one another that you lack internally.
HEADCANONS
🌷 Being perceptive, Uraraka would notice how much you appreciate small forms of PDA, even if it’s simple pinky-locking or hand-holding. With this, she’d slowly ease into greater lengths, making sure you’re comfortable first, often greeting you with warm hugs and butterfly kisses. You two would be the type to cuddle during the night, Uraraka being the big spoon unless you’d ever request otherwise.
🌷 Seeing your scars would cause Ochako a bit of concern—wanting to talk about it and make sure you’re okay. She’d take it as a later chance to kiss everyone and tell you how beautiful you are, and how your scars show your strength.
🌷  Uraraka is very interested in learning about people and seeing you do things such as writing poems and songs would definitely get her curious. She’d often ask if it was okay to read them, and would praise you for how good they are.
🌷 Sometimes, you’ll find little notes scattered on your belongings with little haikus and poems she made just for you.
“You are filled with doubt
of the magic inside you,
but it’s all I see.”
🌷 The two of you would often spend time together, whether it be doing tasks with one another, doing arts and crafts, talking, or even reading, There are times where the two of you will just sit and discuss things in the late hours of the night, speaking of topics such as psychology and astrology. They’re always some of your favorite times because it can lead to many other things such as deeper conversations and holding each other.

For your platonic match up, I pair you with Mina Ashido! 🌺
Tumblr media
WHY YOU’D WORK
You and Mina are opposites of each other, though with your natures, it’d be able to create a relationship that would work. Mina is a chatterbox, and can often ramble on in her own terms—though, she’ll make sure to pull you in on the conversation as well. It’d give you a chance to listen and stay interactive. Hell, with your own ramblings, she’d be one to listen and then respond with a resounding enthusiasm to ensure you it’s alright, and you’d both move on. Mina wouldn’t mind your clingy nature, in fact, she’d be a bit clingy yourself, and with that she’d use it to bring you out of your shell and take you places you would have never thought of before.
HEADCANONS
🌸 Seeing that you like singing, Mina would often like to take you out on fun little karaoke nights—sometimes finding places where she can just rent a room for the both of you so you can sing and laugh to your hearts content.
🌸 Her favorite way to greet you would be a surprise hug from behind, often laughing if she catches you off guard before getting onto other things. It can come out of nowhere at times, and she always finds the element of surprise to be very fun.
🌸 There are times where you two like to have a girl’s night, where you just go to one or the other’s dorms and talk about anything and everything. Often times Mina will also take this as an opportunity to mess with your hair or even try and initiate things such as manicures or pedicures.
🌸 Hearing that you want to dye your hair excites Mina, and one day she’ll surprise you by taking you to the salon to get it done. She’ll be excited to see the end product, and maybe want to get her own hair done so you can surprise each other with your new looks. It’ll be something she gushes over for a long time.
COMPATIBILITY — 94%

With all the Russian gym drama lately, I figured Tumblr might be interested in a post about this.
To start, I’ll briefly describe the U.S. system, since I’ll be comparing it to Russia’s a lot.
In the U.S., there are ten “Junior Olympic” levels. Gymnasts can compete whatever level they're capable of, as long as they meet the minimum age requirement and have scored out of the previous level. You can learn more about the levels here and by searching “level __ meet” on youtube. This program ends at level 10; it does not lead to elite.
If a young American gymnast shows elite potential, they’re usually filtered through the TOPS and Hopes programs, get invited to camps, and eventually qualify elite. For example, the current crop of US juniors attended developmental camps at the Ranch starting at about age 10. But even “late bloomers” can qualify elite; they just need to meet the minimum scores for their age group. You can sometimes tell who took the “elite path” (they tend to be more polished), but the US has Olympic champions from both backgrounds.
ANYWAY, enough about ‘Murrica.
Russia's system is much different. While they do have categories (3 junior ones, 3 senior ones, candidate master of sport, and master of sport), they're based more on age than skill level. I’ll do my best to explain them here. Skip ahead to the “what Russia lacks” section if you DGAF.
The categories are a remnant of the USSR sports classification system, and are used for most Russian sports.
Though I believe rhythmic and figure skating have a separate “elite” category/qualification score? FS also lets older kids compete in lower levels, which gets more kids involved, which helps popularize the sport, which increases the talent pool and is part of why Russian figure skating is so dominant GET YOUR SHIT TOGETHER WAG
If you’re wondering why the levels aren’t just 6-5-4-3-2-1, it’s because they started out with 3-2-1-CMS-MS, then realized it was important to have lower levels as well. Actually idk why they didn’t just add 6-5-4... blame the Soviets. MOVING ON.
Each region decides what skills to include in the junior categories, so they vary a lot. In general, though, I'd describe them as follows:
Level 3 (tiny kids, like 5 year olds) - very basic; forward rolls and cartwheels, pullover on bars, walking across the beam
Level 2 - back walkovers, split jumps, forward rolls on beam, back hip circles
Level 1 - ro+bhs or just a roundoff, fwo+carthweel+bwo, sometimes kips and beam cartwheels
Additionally, most of the top schools require their gymnasts to be proficient at a set of physical abilities (similar to TOPS skills) before they can advance. The requirements are not strict, but it definitely makes a difference.
I have no issues with this system. I think it’s great for kids to focus on the basics, gain strength, develop each event at their own pace, etc. It’s all well and good until they start using the FIG code.
The senior levels have both compulsory and optional routines.
Level 3 (8/9 years) - Not every region has compulsories for this level, but for those that do, they’re basically the same as the girls’ optional routines. You mostly see US level 5-6 skills here. [example]
Levels 2 & 1 compete in national meets, so the compulsory routines are standard across the country
Level 2 (9/10 years) - Compulsories are about US level 7 difficulty; optionals range from US level 5 to US junior elite. They start using a modified FIG code, so skill chucking becomes rampant. [videos: compulsories / optionals 1 / optionals 2]
Level 1 (11/12 years) -  These compulsories are more complex than they are difficult, if that makes sense? The skills/combos are about US level 8 (except bars), but the routines are really hard. Optionals, again, vary a lot. Most of the girls making national finals will have level 10 skills, minimum. 11-12 is usually when the young phenoms are added to the national team, so that group tends to break away as they benefit from camps at Round Lake.  [videos: compulsories, vault is just a handspring / optionals]
Candidate Master of Sport / Master of Sport
no compulsories, just regular FIG code
CMS is 13/14 year olds, similar to “espoir” in other countries
MS is 14/15 for juniors, and then 16+ is obviously senior
There is a qualification score, but I’m not sure what it is in the current code. Girls can compete in the categories without getting the title though.
Regarding the titles, if I remember correctly...
Being awarded Master of Sport is a huge achievement; it can get gymnasts admitted to good universities and makes them desirable coaches
“MS, international class” = medaled at Euros or Worlds
Honored Master of Sport” = World/European champion or Olympian
Those two titles^^ don’t affect the category they compete in, it’s just a nice accomplishment.
Important note: As you’ve probably guessed by now, Russia has no separate elite stream or division. So in the “senior” categories, there is a wide range of ability. Gymnasts who cannot safely do the compulsory skills are competing against gymnasts with elite skills. The regional meet scores can be really depressing... You’ll have a few nationals-bound girls scoring 50+ AA, but many can’t put up a single score in the double digits. (here’s a recent example... check out those bars scores! 0.3!)
[rant incoming]
I imagine this is pretty demoralizing, and results in many girls quitting the sport altogether, particularly once they reach the CMS and MS categories. They’re older, gymnastics is harder and more painful, and they’re in over their heads with the FIG code. There’s no Level 9 Easterns, JO Nationals, or NCAA scholarship to dream of, so why endure all that? Especially when you’ll never meet the strict requirements to become a Master of Sport & enjoy the benefits that come with that.
These girls have no shot at making their region’s team for nationals (usually 6 people), and even if they could - they’re essentially JO gymnasts, and would be competing against European, World, and Olympic champions (Aliya I miss you please come back) - it would be like pitting this random girl from Michigan’s state meet against Ragan Smith. And that girl from Michigan isn’t a bad gymnast! She’s certainly better than I could ever be, and I’m glad she’s able to compete what she’s capable of and be successful. IMO, Russian gymnasts of her ability should have similar opportunities. Leave the sport having had a positive experience, and pass it onto the next generation. Instead, they either quit or attempt too-hard routines that make me cringe. Alexander Alexandrov actually discussed this topic in his Rewriting Russian Gymnastics interview. I definitely recommend reading that interview in its entirety if you haven’t yet.
[/rant]
What Russia Lacks
An organized way to develop elite athletes
Some regions do hold camps, well-known Olympians travel around teaching “master classes,” and the top kids from Russian Hopes get invited to Round Lake each year. I’ll give them that.
But there’s no developmental camp system, like in the US or GB. Russian WAG is lacking numbers at the lower levels compared to other countries. They need to ID talent early on and nurture it, not occasionally send scouts to meets and hope for the best.
An example: Lilia Akhaimova trained in Vladivostok for her entire junior career. That girl has SO MUCH natural talent, and I’m glad her coaches in St. Petersburg have brought it out. But can you imagine how amazing she could have been with better coaching? Surely she would have been noticed in a TOPS-like program. How many Akhaimovas are out there?
I think a dedicated “elite stream,” starting at age 10 or so, could really benefit them, at least temporarily. Just take the kids who show decent strength and have level 7/8 skills and let them compete against each other. Hold regional camps to develop their technique and teach code-appropriate skills. IMO it would benefit both “elite” and “regular” gymnasts. But whatever, I’m not RGF.
The facilities to train high-level gymnastics
Russian gyms are TINY, and many of them are in horrible condition, with ancient apparatus and those Soviet-era mats that resemble floral couch cushions.
There are girls on the national team whose home gyms do not even have a spring floor.
“Why are the gymnasts are Round Lake so much?! They should train at home more.” ^ That’s why.
(Of course they travel to train at the next best gym, but... a gym without a spring floor.)
That’s not to say it’s all bad. The big three gyms in Moscow (CSKA, Dinamo, Sambo 70) are very nice, as are the facilities in St. Petersburg
The Voronezh gym that produced Komova and Melnikova is also looking good, but that’s only because Komova won some shit and got them funding. When she was growing up, the gym had little heating and they had to train in winter clothes. I just wish Youth Olympic titles weren’t required to earn a decent training space.
I guess this is a typical Russian gym. Tiny and with old/limited equipment, but no real safety concerns. Junior national champion Ksenia Klimenko is from here.
I realize that run-down buildings are common in Russia, but I think it’s important to show the gyms these girls train in. When you realize Russia’s gymnasts aren’t being developed in state-of-the-art gyms, like in the US, their ingrained form and technique issues become more understandable. Not excusable, but understandable.
The ability to keep girls at a high level
So many Russian gymnasts just... disappear.
I get that elite isn’t for everyone. Injuries happen, shoddy technique doesn’t carry through growth spurts, bone diseases or the plague will get you, and so on.
Anyway, bottom line, something is wrong with the system and I can’t pinpoint what it is. This has always been an issue, even before the Rods decided conditioning was of the devil. IDK.
Encouraging 9-year-olds to compete double backs and such prob has something to do with it though.
Last-minute edit!! Keeping girls at a high level is not worth them getting hip replacements at 16!! Just let them go!! Y’all fucked up big time.
General info/stuff people frequently ask about
Most NT gymnasts train at Round Lake for three weeks, then go home for one week. Juniors are there a little less often. Obviously, this schedule is adjusted for competitions.
Their personal coaches travel with them.
It’s encouraged for gymnasts to stick with the same coach their whole career, which I think is an issue. Voronezh has many gymnasts who could be great under Komova’s coach, but are just “meh” with their childhood coaches.
I think this is better than handing them over to the national staff, though, like you see in Romania and China. I’m glad the Russian gymnasts have a lifelong, trusted adult looking out for them.
The NT gymnasts get a monthly stipend. According to Grishina, she earned 100,000 rubles (about 1700 USD) per month, but her coaches claim it wasn’t that much. Regardless, they are getting paid.
Moscow is still the dominant WAG city, having placed Mustafina, Paseka, Sosnitskaya, Spiridonova, and Tutkhalyan on major teams last quad.
There really is no close second... Melka is from Voronezh, Eremina from St. Petersburg, Kapitonova from Penza, Ilyankova from Leninsk-Kuznetsky.  It’s nice to see some variety.
What else.
Let’s talk about the vault issue!
Russian juniors start yurchenkos late
They rarely compete yurchenko tucks/pikes/layouts, preferring to just start with the full.
This is likely due to the open ended code being used for 10-year-olds. Tsukaharas and front handsprings are faster to learn than yurchenkos, so they do them for the D score.
(Yurchenkos are harder initially, but once a gymnast has sound technique, she can usually generate more power than with a tsuk/FHS.)
This results in shitty yurchenko fulls, tsuk layouts, and handspring pikes that will never be upgraded. :)
I guess that’s it. If you have any questions/comments/concerns, feel free to inbox me! I’ll do my best to answer or direct you to someone who can.

Sketchy Behaviors | PACOLLI (San Francisco,CA)
Working as a producer in MTV Brazil, self taught artist Patricia Colli (Pacolli) started out hand drawing her own calendars and silk screening her own shirts. Making her own way through a mostly male dominated São Paulo art scene, Pacolli's natural creativity, unique eye for color and composition, and ear for the lyrical made her work stand out from the rest. Not only did her colorfully spastic, psychedelic, and angsty work catch our eye, but also her “go-getter” attitude and DIY ethic which permeates in everything she does: from silk screening her own gear, self publishing her zines, managing her online shop, High In The Bay to the recent opening of her new art space–Bendgy in Brazil.  We got to chat with this chill artist about her new space Bendgy, her artistic processes, and about the magic of zines.
Photographs courtesy of the artist.
Keep calm, read on!
Introduce yourself  My name is Patricia Colli, but people call me Pacolli (it doesn't really have a funny story behind the name, it was just my first email because i wasn't much of a Patty and I had a band with my friend Ronaldo who introduced me to everyone as Pacolli, eventually I stopped fighting it and embraced it, it's like a one name thing like Cher and I like Cher). I'm 35, born in São Paulo (Brazil) and I live in San Francisco, California with my husband and also artist Mildred.
What’s the first thing you remember drawing?  How did you first get interested in art and making art? I remember drawing a house in the hills when I was in school and the teacher said that wasn't really good, I went to an italian catholic school in Brazil and they were not a fan of arts. Maybe that's why I started, in a very shy way, to go around it and start drawing all the time. I didn't like school from day one so I started drawing during classes to escape from it. In 7th grade I started drawing the guys that my friends and I had crushes on and passing them during class, we would laugh so much because the drawings were really sketchy and they were all about skipping class to go see them and skipping class to go to concerts, getting fake IDs and being crazy, recklessly teenagers!I always kept something like a sketchbook journal through the years and eventually they started to become zines, and then t-shirts...
What’s your artistic process like? Do you keep a sketchbook or doodle everywhere you go? I do keep a sketchbook with me at all times, and I make a lot of lists of things to draw. I also write down funny/interesting things I heard or read somewhere. I like to take my time to come up with an idea and daydream as much as I can about it before doing it. I like the process of coming up with something and letting it reveal itself as I go on. It's like finding something about yourself there.
How did your life go from drawing as a hobby to drawing as a career? I used to work on MTV Brazil as a producer and I used to make my own calendars with a big drawing on top, my co-workers used to make copies of those to use them too... I thought it was cool that people liked it but I never thought I could do this for a living. A couple years went by and I started screen printing some t-shirts and got invited for a fashion art show in Antwerp (Belgium). It was funny cause I started being asked to participate in art shows and collaborative zines in Europe but never in Brazil, so it was like a fun side gig to me. Eventually I started getting some freelance illustration/t-shirt design gigs/art shows in Brazil and abroad and gave up my tv job, started traveling where my art was taking me and it took me to San Francisco where I am since then.
What are some of the hardest challenges you have faced as an artist and how did you overcome them? It was hard to manage the ups and downs of the job and understand that's how it goes, sometimes you get called to make a bunch of shows and gigs at the same time and sometimes it feels like there's nothing happening for months to end... so I like to make things happen when I have these slower times, experiment different mediums, collaborate with other artists, start a new personal project and be productive. It's important to keep a perspective about those things and to not compare your path to anyone else cause that won't help. I tend to get anxious if I don't have projects lined up, but if there are no opportunities you have to create them yourself.
You have some many various types of characters – heart shaped people, coffee cup personalities to rabbit / cat people.  What’s the inspiration behind some of them and do they all sort of have personalities? I guess I see faces everywhere lol, drawing humans is challenging! I make myself laugh sometimes when I'm drawing strange creatures that don't exist doing humane things, it's like it's ok for them to look a bit off because there's nothing to compare them to, you know? I like drawing these characters with human feelings but not in a human form because it's more fun and freeing. Sometimes I make these creatures inspired by my friends, I drew the album cover for my friend's band Polara and we used to drink so much coffee all the time, I thought the best way to go about was to draw a bunch of espresso coffee cups dancing like crazy and dizzy bumper cars cause that's how you feel listening to their music after all that coffee!
It’s always really cool to see you printing your own stuff from shirts to stickers  When did you first start silk screening and printing your own things? Has the process evolved for you? I had some friends that screen printed t-shirts and I knew the basic process of doing it, so one day I decided to try one myself and I fell in love with the process and results. It was like playing with stamps all over again (I played with stamps and stickers my whole childhood). Since I was self taught in a way, I didn't know what I was doing...so I started to print things a bit different, not doing the same image over and over. I got a small squeegee and I took my time printing each drawing at once and composing a different story behind each tshirt. I became a screen hoarder!, I never throw them away (unless if they're clogged but I don't let it happen much) and bring them from Brazil - i know, it's crazy! I found my happy place doing these 1/1 prints, it gives me new ideas every time I'm printing, I see new possibilities and experiment without fear, it's very calming and exciting at the same time.
How many zines have you self-published?  How did you first start creating your own zine? I self published six zines so far, my intention was to publish at least one every year but I've been slacking on that goal. I had too many sketchbooks full of drawings, my friends would tell me to do something with them and I was always shy and a bit embarrassed about sharing personal things, one of my friends called me out that all I like a lot from other artists are personal and maybe embarrassing things lol.. so yeah I had no excuse anymore! Reading Jeffrey Brown, Vanessa Davis and Esther Pearl Watson really encouraged me to make my own zine at that time! They're work is very personal and it was definitely an inspiration to me!
What is it that you love so much about zine culture?   I think it's a very specific kind of subject that you couldn't find anywhere else (before the internet got huge). I started reading music zines about underground indie and punk bands. I think I still see it in the same way, a place to put on specific things you don't find anywhere else. I'm really into checking out the paper and print style, small editions with something handmade or hand drawn on it always get my attention. They're hard to find these days! Fun Chicken (the online shop from Mark Todd and Esther Pearl Watson) have really cool zines and I'm always checking Fudge Factory Comics (Travis Millard's online store) cause there's always cool zines. Well everything they have is amazing!
What have been some of your favorite collaborations? What do you enjoy most about them?   I collaborate a lot with my husband, he's been making art and zines for a long time too and every now and then I'll sneak one of our collabs in my zines and vice versa. It's important to have some intimacy with whoever you're collaborating with so you can say what you really think. It's fun to do it and I always learn something from the experience.
Is there a medium you want to try and haven’t?  What is currently your favorite medium and why? I got a wood burner from my in-laws last christmas and I haven't tried yet, it's sitting next to me and I'm very excited to try it out.I really like painting with acrylics and india ink on wood panels, there's so many possibilities and room for trial and error.
What are your top 5 artistic influences, past and contemporary?  When I saw Dan Clowes comics for the first time, it changed my life! The way he draws and portrays the world was so new but so familiar in a way... he's a huge influence to me because it sparkled my interest in expressing myself through drawing. The same happened when I first saw the art of Clayton Brothers, I realized art could be so cool!! Their paintings and drawings blew my mind, I have never seen anything like that... I remember trying to like mainstream art like Picasso and Mondrian but I truly didn't have an emotional connection to any of these guys, I knew that I felt different when I saw Clayton Brothers in the cover of Juxtapoz in 2004. It was hard to find this kind of art in Brazil, and still is! Keith Haring went to São Paulo in the 80's and painted murals, he was on the tv and I thought he was such a cool guy. My mom gave me a calendar with his drawings on it and I loved it and kept it for years! Same thing happened when I discovered Warhol, his persona was always intriguing to me and it made me like his art even more. I grew up watching and reading Peanuts, so I don't think I can leave Charles Schultz out of this list. I don't separate comics from art, they have the same impact for me. I love his ability to create his own world and still being completely relatable, it's also kind of simple but extremely complex at the same time.
There’s an autobiographical nature and intimacy to a lot of your works because they come from feelings and experiences you’ve had or gone through or thought.   Can you talk a little bit of maybe you’ve used some bad experiences in your life to create art from that has been maybe therapeutic?  I feel like since my first sketchbooks were sort of journal like, that I've always had this relationship with drawing and letting emotions out... and it's therapeutic, cheaper than therapy as I always say! It's hard for me sometimes to not let it out, so I don't hold back anymore. It's funny cause the more embarrassed I am of something ultra personal that I drew, the more I get people to write me and say they really liked it. My first two zines were miserably sad ("I thought it was a love story" and "Mad for Sadness") I didn't know what to do with myself so I put together a zine with all those feelings. It kept me busy, which is usually a great thing, and a few years later I got emails from these teenage high school girls from San Francisco telling me their teacher showed my zine in class (!!) and they thought it was a good way to survive a heartbreak. I thought it was so sweet! I never thought about it before, you know? Sad things will happen anyway but how you deal with them is up to you.
What common misconception do you think folks might have about being an artist or making art for a living? I think the internet makes things look easier and more glamorous than they really are. I grew up seeing cartoonists drawing and being a bit miserable like Robert Crumb. Have you seen the documentary "Crumb"? I knew it wasn't easy being him and doing what he was doing, maybe it made me have even more respect for his work. He never tried to portray any glamour about being an artist and I think it's more like the real thing. These days people don't care for struggle, they seem to always want the easy way and that's not how art goes most of the time so I think it's funny and sad in a way. People rip off your work and forget you're a human too, trying to survive in this messy world.
What do you do to overcome those days when nothing you’re making is turning out right? What do you like to do in your off time? I like to read books when I don't know what to do with myself, it helps me to shift the focus and get into something else than my own drama. It helps me with anxiety and always sparks new ideas. Going to concerts and playing drums are my other escape tools for living a better life, music is magic... the power of live music is amazing, going to concerts is one of my favorite things to do!
Tell us about your recent trip to visit Brazil.  When you lived there, you used to do some events called Bendgy. Can you tell us how they came about and how your recent visit went? I lived in São Paulo for 28 years, it's a huge city with a lot of cultural things happening all the time, the pace of the city is maddening and it's hard to keep focus sometimes, but regardlessly it's where i'm from and I love it! I started throwing an art party/concerts in my apartment when I started to make tshirts around 2006-2007. It was a very low profile thing, just for friends and just for fun... i didn't wanted to reach out to places that already existed and try to sell my art because it was weird... so I started something unpretentious to do what I was doing and that's Bendgy! It was an art party with a concert Saturdays afternoon in my apartment, i would sell beers, vegan sandwiches and tshirts. A lot of my friends are musicians so I wanted to have a band and we would support each other, it started getting bigger and I was scared of the risk of being kicked out of my apartment for the loud noise and amount of people coming in...I threw a few Bendgys at my friends places and eventually my dad moved out of his house and it was empty for a while, I started throwing bigger concerts there and it was so much fun!
How is Bendgy now? I just came back from SP and it was a long process but now Bendgy is a real art space, I got a great staff and we open every Saturday! We're having an international art show called "Hit the ground running" with the art of Albert Reyes, Jason Vivona, Jeff Roysdon, Mats!?, Mildred, Michael Hsiung (you!) and myself! In addition to the art show, there's a zine/print/tshirt/stickers shop and we have more affordable things from all the artists in the show and from other great artists from the US, Argentina and Brazil. I'm stoked that it turned out the way it did! It was so much hard work putting it together, I thought I was going crazy.. i felt like Donal Duck, but it was worth it!I book every band and make almost every flyer for it, so it's like I'm there but I'm not.
During your time living in São Paulo, Brasil, what was the art scene like?   It was most like an all boys club to be honest. Graffiti and pixação (São Paulo style of tagging) were the underground art that I liked but always made by guys, some really talented ones too! Like, Os Gemeos still blow my mind and were always a reference for me to what brazilian art is, even though they are more respected as artists outside Brazil. I think they're a good example, for some reason Brazil doesn't cherish their own artists until someone else says it's good. It needs a foreign stamp of approval that always made me bored about it because there's so many great artists there!
Who are some artists in Brazil you admire? and why? I love Stephan Doitschinoff's art, he creates his own world and he is very focused on being true to who he is. His work has always been an inspiration to me on how to do things, if there's not a scene for what you're doing you create the scene!
Throw a zine fest or an art party, and make no excuses for not doing things. People tend to complain there's not enough opportunities there, but i feel like it's also in our own hands to make things happen and not just wait for someone to invite you to be part of something. Jaca is another extremely talented artist living in São Paulo, he is super humble and not really into posting his art online. He doesn't need no approval or applause and I love that! He looks inside himself and his works reveal that to us, it's very inspiring! He will have a solo show at Bendgy in July and I can't wait to see what he's going to do.
When did you start your online store High in the Bay?  The products on there are all hand made by you in SF?  What’s it like keeping your own shop?   I started High in the Bay with my husband, Mildred, when I moved to SF in 2010 to make it up for the fact that I couldn't do a Bendgy here (i would have been evicted right away) so we did an online store. We do carry zines from other artists that we like and sometimes we make collaborative zine packs so people get to know other things than our own work, they get to see what we like! I brought some books, prints and zines from an amazing artist from Argentina called Tomás Spicolli, his work has been a big influence to me so I was very happy to have his art at Bendgy and soon at High in the Bay. It's important to learn to manage something even if it's an online shop, so then you get the grip of it and can do things better in the future, I used to work at Needles and Pens and I learned a lot from them on how to do things, it really helped me when I was doing Bendgy and High in the Bay.
You done a lot of cool art for bands!  What has been your favorite collaboration?  Thanks, man! I have to say I've been lucky to have worked with cool people, like I told before the Polara album cover was a cool one, it's coming out sometime this year in Brazil. All the bands were really cool to me and we became friends, I did a tshirt design for Josh Berwanger Band a few years ago, it had a funny request "draw Patrick Swayze in Road House"! And there was another album cover i did for Swivs that was so much fun to do, his music is so good!!
Give us your top 5 bands or tunes while creating?  How does music influence your art?  I'm very into the new Afghan Whigs album called "In Spades", and all their music really. It's one of my favorite bands ever, I have drawn so many of their lyrics consciously and unconsciously!I just came back from a concert last night in Oakland from another favorite of mine, The Magnetic Fields.  They're great and i came back from Brazil earlier just to see them, love everything that Stephin Merritt does, forever and ever.I'm very into the same bands for the longest time, I love the Ramones, Pulp, Os Mutantes, Cypress Hill, Tupac, Jonathan Richman, Spaceman 3... my music taste is all over the place!Music is a major influence to me, since I was a kid my best friend was not my pen but my radio.
What are your favorite Vans? how would you describe your personal style?Ok, there was a limited edition Lo Pros Saddle shoes that was SO cool! I have a photo of me wearing it, cause i wore it all the time! I'm a Hi Top girl, black and white or just white ones, love those!
What’s the best and worse advice you’ve gotten about art?  Best advice is to work hard and be true to yourself, sounds cliche but it's the truth.Worse advice is when people told me I had to go to art school, it might work for some people but it wasn't for me...
What’s on the horizon for the rest of 2017?  There's one big project that i'm super excited about but can't talk about it yet... And there will be lots and lots of cool art and live music happening at Bendgy!

D-Ensemble
Prompted by @dollofdeath‘s art which is based on my Modern Musician AU, I just had to headcanon everybody playing in a music ensemble with their instruments!
Miyoshi: violin
Kaminaga: guitar (acoustic and electric)
Hatano: bongo, drums & percussion
Jitsui: violin & erhu
Tazaki: piano/keyboard & flute
Amari: trumpet (though saxophone was my close 2nd choice)
Odagiri: bass
Fukumoto: trombone
Gamou: viola
Sakuma: cello
Yuuki: he can play almost any instrument, ofc
Wordy descriptions under the cut
The D-Ensemble plays almost anything—pop, jazz, classical, showtunes, soundtracks, even experimental pieces! They play anywhere too—festivals, charities, military events, fancy dinners, even kids’ birthday parties (Miyoshi was appalled). They played once for an audience of farm animals (Tazaki’s idea)—once for dolphins at Seaworld—(Amari insisted)—and once or twice for a metalhead motorbike gang (Kaminaga and Hatano were to blame). They charge according to the client’s capacity and will go pro bono if the situation calls. Most of the money they make just barely covers their expenses plus the occasional dinner, beer, and snacks. Nobody gets paid much and most are amateurs who have other careers though a few are professional musicians. They’re also unconventional in that everybody has a voice and most decisions are made by a voting process. Members can suggest themes, songs, or even events to play in. Everybody plays because they love to play good music and spend time with each other—as disorderly as the ensemble may be.
Personal descriptions below:
 Miyoshi: violin
Knows he’s amazing at it but secretly still practices a lot because Perfectionism. Classical music snob with all HQ music records (ofc). Paranoid about his fingers - brings gloves and chapstick everywhere. Cares too much about show dress codes and never fails to take selfies (with or without the ensemble).
Kaminaga: guitar, sometimes percussions
Plays both acoustic and electric. Always loses his guitar pick and puts stickers on his guitar. Obnoxiously recruits people to join his rock band. Pothead who loves to sing loudly and strike weird poses at every photo opportunity (a meme?). Alternate MC with Amari.
Jitsui: violin & erhu
The secretary. Knows a lot about alcoholic drinks (why) but keeps getting ID-ed. One time he disappeared for few months, giving everybody a scare, but came back an excellent erhu player & a wushu artist (how). His violin comes in a hard case so it’s super protected and he can hit people with it (watch out!)
Hatano: bongo, drums & percussions
A song always NEEDS MORE COWBELLS drums! High energy, always looks like he’s having so much fun and about to breakdance. Puts his whole body into drumming. Makes faces at people during rehearsals & pulls pranks. In Kaminaga’s rock band but they never got anywhere cause they won’t stop bickering.
Tazaki: piano/keyboard & flute
The Professor™ who’s nerdy about music history & theory. Has strong classical roots & will break into Beethoven randomly just to annoy shock people. Always attracts birds, kids, and chicks when he plays and almost banned from the park because of it. Secretly bitter he doesn’t get to play flute enough.
Amari: trumpet
Bandleader & star of the ensemble! A charismatic MC, he can charm the audience with both his speech and trumpet play. Loves jazz & improvisation. Knows how to encourage everyone in the ensemble and makes sure they get along. Also loves to include himself in photos with (female) audience members. Always forgetting/losing something (keys, cellphone, child etc.)
Odagiri: bass
Bass because it looks big and awkward yet the sound doesn’t stand out – like Odagiri himself—but it’s an important part of the ensemble! He prefers to play standing. Punctual & never misses rehearsals. He thinks he’s not that good but everybody respects him because he only started learning bass recently. He’s also the trusty treasurer. Secretly wants to go to karaoke with everybody cause he’s never been to one. Religiously follows social media accounts of artists and orchestras he likes.
Fukumoto: trombone
Doesn’t look like it but is good at improvs. Always trips over something (his foot, his case, his chair, his cat) even on stage. So chill he never looks nervous (which can be annoying lol). Buy snacks at cheap wholesale stores to share during rehearsals. Plans the ensemble’s food outings cause he knows all the good restaurants.
Gamou: viola
Everybody always forgets the viola but he’s there and he’s good at it, okay? He’s nice and friendly – but always texting on his phone and mysteriously disappears during break and right after practice. Everybody thinks it’s because he has a secret girlfriend and he’s so attached, it’s become a running joke.
Sakuma: cello
Rehearsal captain (keeps time, attendance, etc.) who tries to keep everybody in line (impossible—this is the D-Ensemble!). Gets scary-mad when people skip or come late to rehearsals, but is actually observant and always ready to help (Do you need help tuning? Do you need water? Need a ride home?)
Plays by the book and struggles to improvs. Generally clueless about pop culture so he gets teased a lot. His schedule is basically work/gym/play music/sleep. Everyone is secretly planning a surprise for his birthday (with raw egg involved).
Yuuki: he can play almost any instrument, of course!
Artistic Director of the Ensemble and sometimes conductor. Rumor has it he used to be a concertmaster for a famous orchestra abroad but nobody knows why he stopped. Though he gives a lot of artistic freedom to his musicians, everybody goes to him for music advice and respects his opinion.
Thanks to him, the ensemble somehow manages to survive, gets rare copyrighted music material, and lands really good gigs despite scarce funds. Nobody is sure why but he seems to have some shady but powerful connections—as shady as his recruitment procedures even (because seriously, how did he find these misfits and get them to join the ensemble?!)
He also enjoys the occasional drinks and cigar but he doesn’t usually join the ensemble’s social outings. Everybody forgets that he is in their Skype Conversation group so they openly speculate and gossip about him there. He thinks it’s hilarious!
 Bonus
Emma: cheerleader
Official sunshine of the ensemble! Everybody loves her. Sometimes she’ll cheer for them during rehearsals but sometimes she’ll fall asleep too! They like to let her play something easy like the tambourine or triangle—which she’ll do with great enthusiasm! Everybody argued on what instrument she’ll learn when she’s big enough—until Yuuki shuts them down and tells them that Emma can choose for herself. Hint: it’s going to be an instrument that works well with the ensemble. Go Emma!
Sergeant Pepper (Sarge): Sakuma adopted a senior dog from the shelter that he sometimes brings to practice. Sarge is a big, old, gentle dog. Loves coming to practice because everybody gives him treats and back rubs and stomach rubs and behind the ear rubs and all the rubs in the world! Everybody says they’d rather see Sarge’s face in practice than Sakuma’s (rude). Frate looks up to Sarge and wants him to run around and play with him but good old Sarge just wants to listen to music and take naps :’)
And now I want to draw everybody and their instruments but that’ll take me weeks if I ever get to it T_T
Disclaimer: I don’t actually play any instrument so this is not based on musical knowledge and whatnot. All mistakes are mine but I’m happy to be corrected ^_^ I just happened to go to my brother’s youth orchestra rehearsals a lot when I was a teeny teen and I love love love Nodame Cantabile (mukyaaa~!!)

Benjamin Franklin gestured dramatically toward the moldering gravestone of the Revolutionary War soldier. “And then,” he proclaimed, pausing for effect, “He killed ‘im dead!” Twelve adults and a handful of children stared at him wide-eyed as he finished the dramatic account of the Yankee soldier’s death. “Follow me, I will take you to Old North Church and the site of the Boston Massacre.” He whipped Paul Revere’s woodcutting of the Boston Massacre out of a pocket and displayed it with a flourish. A camera flashed. Benjamin Franklin posed for a second photo.
Obviously, our downtown Boston tour guide was not actually Benjamin Franklin. To be honest, he wasn’t even pretending to be—although I thought the tour company was missing out by not taking advantage of the fact that this man was the spitting image of the famous figure. Eleven-year-old me soaked in every aspect of the spooky graveyard tour, trying to pretend I was fending off the October chill with a deerskin coat rather than a windbreaker and imagining what life might have been like long before Boston became characterized by skyscrapers of chrome and glass. Even after a decade and a half, the memory of this adventure in Boston is clear in my mind.
History Road Trips
Boston was the first stop on our family’s history tour of the East Coast, our annual family “field trip.” Instead of the summer vacations to the beach, we took autumn trips to historical or geological sites around the United States. One thing my sister and I loved about the trips is that they counted as school days. This was one of the many perks of being homeschooled, although it didn’t mean we got to skip out on finishing our math workbooks! Just because the trips were considered “school” didn’t mean they were boring. My mom, a teacher, and my dad, a geology aficionado, built up our expectations of the trip through a semester of historical fiction, vivid storytelling, period-accurate toys, movie nights, and projects both recreational and educational. By the time we arrived on the East Coast from Arizona, we felt like we were old friends with George Washington and Paul Revere. We were excited to see everything, and the opportunity to spend money we earned by memorizing geography facts certainly didn’t dampen our enthusiasm.
Statue of Paul Revere in Boston.
There are many benefits to taking an educational East Coast vacation. First, it’s fun! Both my sister and I were voracious readers, and my love of history mixed with her interest in photography set the stage for fun on our East Coast road trip. However, touring the history of the East Coast can be a blast even if you or your kids aren’t particularly enamored with books or dusty artifacts. Creepy graveyard tours will excite Ghostbusters wannabes, art lovers will revel in the many museums, foodies will find Heaven on Earth in fine New England eateries, movie buffs will enjoy the many film settings, and the mischievous among us will get a kick out of trying to make Plimoth Plantation actors break character. There’s so much to see and do!
Secondly, of course, a tour of the United States’ roots provides a rich educational opportunity. Experience this region’s history, government, art, geography, marine life, architecture, music and more in real life, and you’ll never see them the same way again. Take your kids on a trip like this, and they’ll have to try to fail social studies tests in the future. There’s just nothing like reading original documents or seeing historical sites in person.
Points of Interest on an East Coast History Tour
When touring the East Coast, why not start where the Revolutionary War began? Boston is not only the birthplace of the American Revolution, but it’s also a great northerly point to start at so you can work your way south. You can see pretty much all of Boston’s history if you take the Freedom Trail. Squint your eyes a bit, and you can almost block out the rush of traffic to imagine 18th Century crowds moving through the cobbled streets. The urban path leads past nearly twenty historic sites, including Boston Common, Granary Burying Ground, old North Church, and the USS Constitution. Don’t forget to see where the Boston Tea Party took place at Boston Harbor. If you want to enjoy some scientific excursions, the MIT Museum and Boston Aquarium are rather impressive. Of course, you can’t leave Massachusetts without a visit to the settlers and Natives at Plimoth Plantation.

Heading south from Boston, you can stop in Fort Griswold Battlefield State Park in Connecticut on your way to New York City. Once in NYC, you’ll have to pick your favorite attractions! I recommend bypassing the Statue of Liberty to tour Ellis Island, although if you’re short on time, you can view both from a distance by taking the Statin Island Ferry across the harbor. If your heart is set on seeing a Broadway play while you’re in Manhattan, you can keep with your historic theme by getting tickets to Hamilton. Of course, you can’t miss the chance to get a glimpse of the Chrysler Building, the Flatiron Building, or the Brooklyn Bridge, but don’t forget to have some fun on the century-old Coney Island Cyclone roller coaster.

Philadelphia, Delaware and D.C. Sites
Emerge from the lightning-speed pace of New York City life into the antique air of historic Philadelphia. Thanks to National Treasure, you might already be pretty familiar with the major attractions: The Liberty Bell, Washington Square, Old City Hall, and Independence Hall. Depending on your interests, you might also like Battleship New Jersey or Morris Arboretum.
Delaware, as the nation’s first state, certainly deserves a quick visit, which can be achieved with a visit to Fort Delaware. From there, head to Washington, D.C., where you’ll wish you had more time to explore, no matter how long you stay. Where do you even begin? Well, the National Mall is a good place to start. You can burn a lot of calories walking from the White House to the Lincoln Memorial, the Jefferson Memorial, the Capitol, and the various Smithsonian Museums. You might not have time for all the Smithsonian Museums, but you can pick your favorites. I was a fan of the Air and Space Museum and the National Portrait Gallery. After all that walking, you can try to spot senators while refueling at some of the fancier restaurants, like 1789, a popular institution named for the year the Constitution was adopted and offering an 18th-Century experience. If you can plan ahead, book a tour of the White House or your representative’s office. Finally, end your road trip with a jaunt down to George Washington’s estate, Mount Vernon in Virginia.
When you walk the streets of the historic East Coast, the past comes alive! Next time you open an American history book or watch a documentary, you’ll be able to say that you were there. From the centuries-old brick of Boston to the sprawling countryside of Virginia, there’s no better way to learn about the roots of American culture.

Obsession Phrases Review: Surprising Phrases That Makes A Man’s Heart Race
In this Obsession Phrases Review you'll discover the truth about the product and if it really can work.
"Men are from Mars, women are from Venus". You've probably heard that quote 100's of times. Do you feel that there are some women who seem to understand those people from Mars more than you? They drift through life starting, building, maintaining relationships with ease. They seem to get everything right.
You may feel that nothing you ever say or do is right. That there must be something wrong with you. Constantly stressing over what you should change. What you could do differently. It’s not about changing. It’s about learning some tricks and key vocabulary. That is where obsession phrases by Kelsey Diamond comes in.
We often find it hard to find the right things to say at the right time to the people we care about. Everyone has their own opinion about what is classed as a good thing to say and depending on what words we choose can be a sign to a guy about how much we care or are interested in them.
Whether they like to admit it or not. Men like to be flattered particularly about how they look. Telling them they look great will actually boost their interest in you. But, it should not be a generic feature that all men have. You have to find a feature that is personal to him. Dimples, the color of his eyes. Men really aren't any different to women. They like to be admired and complimented on their strengths. So not only can you compliment him on his looks but also things he is good at and does well. Whatever that strength may be, they want to be made to feel special.
It is important to tell him how things he does makes you feel in a positive way. The little things that they do to make you smile or get your heart racing. This will make them more receptive to do these things more often. However, and Kelsey considers this to be very important, you can’t lie to them. Don’t pretend something they do is great, when it is not. They will be able to tell it is not coming from the heart and it will fail to have the desired impact. If there is something they don’t do well just don’t discuss it. You do not want to be negative either. Obsession Phrases teaches you to find the right words for each situation to have him exactly where you want him.
Is Obsession Phrases Right For You?
The simple question to that is yes. This book is designed for all women whether in a relationship or not. It can meet the needs of many women in many circumstances:
Single
Life is lacking passion and you have no confidence to go out and get it.
Happily Married
Divorced
In a tired, flat relationship
Your partner is always distant, not listening, acting as if they aren't really there
Not only that, but this book can help men. Whilst it helps women develop strategies to solve their problems, it can aid men in understanding who they are and why they behave in the way that they do.
What Was Kelsey Diamond Going With Obsession Phrases For?
Kelsey's aim derived from dating someone who was a "player". Your usual jack the lad, up for anything with a string of women behind him.
Kelsey is just a person like any other who enjoys the good things in life. But, has used skills and techniques that have been learned over the years to become a man magnet. This began when working with hypnotists as an assistant. Giving an understanding of psychology and the power language can have on a person. Time was spent studying techniques used in hypnosis considering the possibility that by applying some of the techniques women could gain control of the situation and get what they wanted.
The program is designed to teach women how to talk in a seductive way to their man. In some cases how to talk in a sexy and sultry way. Although, Kelsey give a series of phrases to use the way in which they are developed is essential.
How Can You Access It?
It is an eBook. So as such can be download onto your computer as well as most mobile devices, which means you can have access to it wherever you go, making it a handy held tool. There is also an audio copy of the program. The program is set up with simple steps through a series of concepts to enable to establish the relationship you desire.
How Does Obsession Phrases All Work?
The program is made up on a series of modules, creating a detailed program to learn from. Each one can be considered a lesson in ways to talk to your man with confidence in a seductive way.
The first step that is outlined is how to become more appealing in a man’s eyes. This is followed by considering sexual boundaries and how a woman can control them and show her partner what she enjoys every step of the way.
The following 2 modules are all about getting your man to focus his attention on you. To see you are alluring to prevent him from straying, even if it is only in his mind. In conjunction with getting your man to focus on you it will enable you to grow in confidence and understand your own sensuality, as this is generally one of the main problems. To be able to get a man to focus on you, you first have to believe you are worth their focus.
The 5th module is about creating visual aids to share with your man. How to bring out your sexuality and get his undivided attention. The 6th section is all about identifying and targeting what your man wants most and then learning how to amplify his desire. 7 and 8 are geared towards people who have either not made that sexual connection yet with someone they are close to or for those who feel it has dies and they are stuck in the "friend-zone". It is all about making him want you.
The final 2 modules are about identifying the unknown or hidden aspects of your mans’ desires. It teaches how to identify what they are and how to become that fantasy woman.
Those women who have followed Kelsey’s ideas have claimed it is a perfect way to rejuvenate their relationships, reigniting missing elements. For those who were not already in a relationship, it has proven to be a perfect way to make a man fall in love with them. Getting the man you really desire.
The best part of this is its simplicity to use making it accessible to anybody. The aim of the Obsession Phrases PDF ebook is to answer the many questions women have when forming a relationship.
The Techniques / The Nitty Gritty
There are countless strategies and methods outlined in Obsession Phrases but there are 4 key themes/techniques that will make a man totally addicted to you.
Target His Emotions
You want to keep the man on his toes. Using dramatic emotions with an element of uncertainty will make him emotionally hooked. The program doesn’t mean to be a drama queen in a negative way but it does use positive emotions to draw him in excitement & passion. This will make him want you without really knowing why.
Logic Is the Answer
Men think in a logical way. They are systems and sense people so you want to convince them that you are the most logical choice in the world. So once you have snagged him on an emotional level you then need to make sure that those emotions do make sense. Otherwise, if he is unable to process the need to be with you he may reject the emotions over time. If they make sense then you have him, hook line and sinker.
Mix It Up
Once you have been with someone for a while things can become stale. The beginning of the relationship is exciting so the emotions are flowing freely but after time they become the norm. This is why you need to mix the positive emotions he feels up giving him a sense of the relationship constantly changing and evolving.
You Need Sex Appeal
Men can, if given the opportunity, notice other women. If things have become a little stale in that area they are more likely to appreciate these other women more. It is important that you remain the presence in his eyes of being the sexiest woman alive. By using the Art of Dramatic Sex Appeal you will be in his eyes and heart the one and only. The sexiest, more alluring woman ever. No matter how you look or think you look, if you follow Kelsey's steps he will only have eyes for you.
