[English Subs DL] Joker Game II

Hello~! This is an unexpected project from me, I’m sure, but it was a really great stage to have worked on! Thank you to @thiswasmadeonawhim for requesting me to do them! I had a blast reliving the anime and catching up with the novel, even if they did make me go through a rollercoaster of emotions in the process ^^;

The first stage’s subs were wonderfully done by @/great-blaster and their team in this post HERE. Please check them out if you want to get into the world of Joker Game stage~! (Not sure if the actual video is provided or if it’s just softsubs though ^^;) It’s not completely necessary to watch the first one to get the gist of the second one, but it would be better ifjust to get a feel for the characters, setting, and overall vibe that Joker Game offers ^^

Translations for the “Valkyrie” light novel some of the stage was based on can be found HERE as well! The novel really helped me a lot when I got lost, so a big thank you to the translator who did them, too~!

I am not a historian in any way, and while I had the novel to guide me, I am not 100% sure whether the historical references are accurate or true to life. I did do some further reading regarding some of the names and events, but if something is off or not accurate, please feel free to DM me so I can edit the subs!

I only translated the play, so any problematic or controversial views/idealisms/philosophies mentioned in the story do not represent my own views. Please don’t come sliding into my DMs about them.

TRIGGER WARNINGS:

Parts of the play are set in Nazi Germany, so please be warned of the presence of characters based on their real life counterparts (i.e. Joseph Goebbels, Leni Riefenstahl, etc.), as well as a lot of Nazi Germany symbolisms and references.

It is not graphic, per se, but it is a stage play based on spies, so some scenes, word choices, and sequences contain violence.

Mentions of war, war propaganda, and conspiracies are also present, so please be warned.

I am currently watching Joker Game. I love the 1930s Japan setting, I love espionage and military stories. I noticed that the artstyle reminded me so heavily of Vanilla Persona 5's cutscenes, and lo and behold, Production I.G. and Kadokawa produced this. I really wish Raidou Kuzunoha V.S. the Lone Marebito could be animated with this similar style. I'd pay serious amounts of money to see that get an adaptation. But this is really for me, because I want to see Narumi get animated. A possible Narumi espionage backstory would be so great.

As for your question...

it's hard to say.

Although here the three of them are depicted together...

This normally doesn't happen.

We know that Yuuki 'saved' Odagiri when the latter was arrested for 'insubordination' and was likely going to lose his rank and be discharged from the army with dishonor.

Yuuki: Are you the one they called "untrainable?" Any plans for after you quit the army? Odagiri: Good question. Maybe I'll move to Manchuria and become a roving bandit… Yuuki: If you feel up to it, come take my exam.

The novels make clear Yuuki made an exception when he took Odagiri in his agency.

The people D Agency chose were “civilians”. When D Agency had just began, this policy of Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki caused an uproar within the army, but Tobisaki was an exception. Starting at Military Preparatory School, then experiencing Imperial Japanese Army Academy, and finally being appointed as army second lieutenant, he could be considered as a “purebred” army officer. (XX translation by @unnagi)

In the anime it's implied he also sent him to Manchuria because Nogami Yuriko will move there.

In the novel things are different as Nogami Yuriko is the culprit and Odagiri is assigned in noth China.

“Your new place of assignment is Northern China. Apparently you’ll be a First Lieutenant.”

Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki said so half-heartedly. Needlessly to say, Tobisaki already knew the meaning behind his words. D Agency handled confidential matters of the army, including illegal affairs. Naturally, the military couldn’t let someone who “knew too much of the inside story” live on. Tobisaki’s new place of assignment was probably the battlefront that was raining in bullets at this very moment.

— First give him a promotion, then a place to bury him.

This was the cruel “considerate plan” of the army. Tobisaki accepted the transfer order in accordance with the rules, placing it under his arm and turning around, when he was just planning to step out of the room… Someone from the back was calling him by his real name. He turned to look back, only to see Lieutenant Colonel Yuuki had stood up from the seat, his right hand in front of his forehead, he was doing a military salute in front of Tobisaki for the first time.

“You cannot die.” (XX translation by @unnagi)

So Yuuki's only kindness is telling him he can't die as a way to encourage him to survive.

As for Fukumoto... we see no interactions between Yuuki and Fukumoto.

The first stage used Fukumoto as kind of Yuuki's secretary if I'm not wrong as he was often the one reporting situations to Yuuki.

I don't know about the second as it was never translated which is too bad.

It's still not much but, I guess, this means fans can interpret things the way they prefer.

Every couple of months I remember Akinator exists so I try to make him guess my fav seiyuu/characters.

Sadly he still doesn't recognize Chiaki -__-

Last night I tried making him guess Hayate (Cool Doji Danshi), but he guessed Miyoshi (Joker Game) instead! How? Why? XD

But seeing Miyoshi suddenly brought all the feels back and that made me wanna re-watch Joker Game after all of those years (almost 8!).

Even tho I remembered the ending and I knew I was going to be depressed as hell, I still wanted to re-watch the whole anime.

So I just did. It was actually nice binge-watching and not having to wait every week for a new ep.

Yep. All the feels came back alright.

Sakuma was so hot and I still think Miyoshi would have been such a good power bottom for him hnggg *___* Every time they were in a scene together, all I could think about was Miyoshi riding that **** ^^;;.

And yep, like I mentioned on a post back then, it's unusual but really nice hearing Ryouhei whimpering while being gagged. Pity this man doesn't do BL. PITY I'm telling you.

Back then Tazaki was my fav spy. Too bad since then Sakurai's scandal was revealed and I can't enjoy his characters anymore. Damn him.

I'd really love if this anime wasn't episodic, and if we got all the spies working together each ep. I loved seeing them together on the short periods we've got, like the (too short) OVAs. Also, not enough Sakuma! I'd also like to get more young! Yuuki. He was hot *__*

That's funny reading people's comments on MAL, saying "they all look the same, I can't tell who is who". Well, I said that too on my first related post, but I knew I'd recognize them fast enough after I start watching. And also, being a seiyuu fan is a pro, because even if you really can't recognize their faces - you can recognize their voices, so you immediately know who is who in each ep.

It was nice watching that after so long. Very enjoyable (minus Miyoshi's end, which felt out of nowhere, even on the re-watch, but was still sad).

*Sighs* My mind keeps going back to Sakuma x Miyoshi scenarios. They could have had it good *cries*

I feel like I recognise your writing style but I'm not sure, lol. It's fine if you don't answer due to privacy or whatever. Anyways your blog is great even if Golden kamuy isnt a priority for you anymore!

No, it's not weird to ask and yes, I've wrote analysis for plenty of fandoms on Tumblr.

However I generally don't give the name of my other Tumblrs unless we're talking of the Joker Game one because Joker Game needs more love and I'll support it until I die.
